LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

YourVZ - $15/Year 128MB OpenVZ VPS in Scranton

YourVZ Justin from YourVZ emailed me yesterday about their low end offers. Their offer can also be found on WHT. 5 of their Silver plans are under $7/month. Comparing to their Gold and Platinum plans, their Silver plans are more CPU-capped, and have relatively small amount of monthly data quota. It starts from $15/year for “Silver 128”.

  • 128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 200GB/month data transfer on 1Gbps
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

It scales all the way up to “Silver 768” which is $6/month with 768MB/1536MB memory, 30GB storage and 800GB/month data. YourVZ only accepts PayPal. Servers with HostNOC/BurstNET in Scranton PA (test IP: 184.22.204.211). Check their ToS and AUP to make sure you agree with the terms there. For example, under AUP, Disk Space — “YourVZ.com Customers may not initiate the following… Use 90% or more of alloted system CPU resources for longer then 180 seconds or 2% of the servers CPU resources for longer than 5 minutes (Updated: Fixed by Justin). Sounds pretty, hmm, restrictive?

I do like the short quip next to the Linux distro though. For example: “CentOS — ENTerprise OS”. “Scientific Linux — Basically Enterprise Linux” (okay, both of them are built using open sourced RH Enterprise Linux). But ZFS? That can’t be in used on their nodes, can it?

YourVZ.com is registered by Justin from Johannesburg, South Africa merely a month ago so we are still uncertain whether the service would be able to carry out for the entire year. Silver 384/512/768 do have monthly payment though.

  2. I saw the ZFS image on there and had a big ‘wtf’ face when I saw it.

ZFS is possible on linux but it’s done entirely in FUSE so it’s slow as balls. Considering the fact that ZFS development is up in the air now that solaris is closed up, i’m not entirely sure why someone would want to use it right now for anything but maybe 2nd level backups (backups of backups) or for data that is highly de-dupable.

      • I must agree with Francisco.

If you thinking of using it on Linux please think again as it is still in its infancy. There are FUSE and module based versions but still very new.

On Opensolaris on the other hand it works quite well just needs a lot of resources.

        If you look at “http://www.oracle.com/us/products/servers-storage/storage/unified-storage/index.html”
you will see it is kicking.

Very interesting related link: SmartOS, Joyent’s custom “distribution” with ZFS, DTrace, zones, and KVM. It runs the Illumos kernel (the new name for the community-driven kernel which forked off of OpenSolaris before Oracle killed OS), BSD package management, and a GNU toolchain.

        • Hi Fanovpn “you should really have enuff respect for yourself to stick you Alias with a CAPITAL?”

          Just kidding.

That SmartOS looks like the stuff if you know what I saying??

Really nice to see the Illumos kernel being put to good use.
Not so good for a VPS enviroment as ZFS will try to eat all the ram available for arc and it will be fighting with the VM’s all the time. But I recon if you have the budget to chuck double the ram of what ever you are trying to sell at it, it could work quite well.
Personaly I don’t like being tied to one host, there is nothing worse than having some small bit of kit let you down and you aging 10 years in about 20 mins.

I think if you can do a nice stable dual ha san setup with 10gbit interconnect and a couple of hosts that are running some cool bits like ksm and sriov you can do a better job and you clients wont even know if something has died on you.

  3. Hi Francisco

It’s ZFS shared storage based on http://openindiana.org that is a new fork of the last Opensolaris version.
The storage is designed to provide high IOPS for real world performance VS sequential read write performance.

    • That’s all well and good but are you colocating a large enough storage array? ZFS only shines when you have a SSD based level2 cache to help it out. Are you putting a 10gbit link to it or just bonded gig ports?

You’re in burstnet so i’m doubting you told them you want a 8 – 16 drive setup then a SSD to make it howl. I could be wrong but burstnet isn’t known for their colocation, normally dedis/VPS :)

I’m genuinely curious since we’ve considered ZFS/SAN’s for previous deployments but didn’t pursue it due to how iffy it gets. You can check what happened to securedragon (Sorry Joe if I spelt the name wrong!) when they had a SAN in place.

  4. Hi Francisco

We are colo’d and the system was built from the ground up and has been in testing for about 6 months in the Datacenter.

    We have a 10gbit CX4 based fabric.

Your right ZFS would be useless without SSD’s for ZIL and L2Arch and lots of RAM for Arch.

Look at the joke of their “contests” where the same providers win contest after contest when 2 of those “winners” do not even have stock on a regular basis.

Maybe if more than a small handful of providers here actually had a clue about technical matters, how to operate a business and do so in a legal manner, knew the first thing about customer server, didn’t get busted by their mommy and daddy, etc; they would get more positive reviews.

Internet relay chat isn’t illegal, neither abuse and it shouldn’t be placed together with illegal content, etc.. but I accepting the fact that some host don’t allow it.

btw. side note. Somehow todd (quick../qualitys…) still allow it and he’s also hosted with burstnet. Strange, a?

Sure, but why one of the oldest AND COMPLETELY LEGAL internet protocol have to do with illegal/abuse content. Intenet relay chat isn’t illegal and prosecuted in any state on the world as far as I know. While I accepting the fact that isn’t allowed I think that isn’t fair to put one of the oldest and still alive internet protocol together with piracy, illegal content, child porn and similar illegal activities.

Vedran, from LET (if I may quote him) said this better:

I have nothing against providers banning IRC for whatever reason they have, it’s their business, they can run it however they think it’s best, if they think it would be better for them to ban IRC completely, then by all means do that!

What bothers me is when their AUP/TOS says something like

We strictly forbid warez, child pornography, IRC …

IRC does not deserve to be put there! IRC is one of the oldest internet services still in use, it survived for more than 20 years, and it’s still alive and kicking. IRC is not bad by itself, there are bad users and they are minority.

Due to somewhat higher risk of abuse and DDoS attacks, we do not allow IRC

Just say something like that and you won’t see me complaining.

Some providers actually know why are they banning IRC, and I respect that, even if they’re wrong. Unfortunately some have no clue, they’re just copy/pasting.

I hope that this clarify my expressed opinion.

It will run inside Suckdows “if you really want to disappoint yourself” , you can boot of the disk and test it “It should detect all hardware on most platform’s” or install it side by side “dual boot” if your not comfortable with the idea yet.
Been using some form of OSS almost since I can remember.

If you like to be “FLASH” get a MAC, the battery life is something phenomenal! Rally I don’t know what they use in the batteries but it’s not lithium ion. “Please don’t quote me on that”

Yeah, exactly… hehe. I wasn’t too optimistic either as few years ago I saw this FUNNY video (someone still have it?) from DC camera where Jason (veritynet) pack in bags HDDs from Fran to get him to pay hosting bills. And then another Fran fail episode called Portland with single homed DC :) But as it seems Francisco learned from past mistakes and came out “stronger” :)

Ermm.. hey, why do we talk about buyVM again? :S

      • The thing with VN is sad though. The owner is the one that owed $12,000 and he ended up leaving steadfast a year or so after we did, and ended up running up a $20,000 bill with the new place too. In the end he got all of his servers repo’d.

the Portland spot we got lied to constantly as you know from experience. I learned pretty quick that not all DC’s are on the up n’ up (before then we always had pretty much very positive reviews with colo’s and mostly with dedi’s).

Live ‘n learn in the end.

    • Most visitors on LowEndBox are from the States, whom have little idea what a “rugby” is…

        • Indeed. I am just commenting on the visitors in general over here in LowEndBox. QuickWeb (from New Zealand) is about the only other provider that commented on RWC here.

        • Yup, thanks. Was just reading the pool results so far:

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Rugby_World_Cup#Pool_stage

To be honest though, I can’t even spell rugby if I had to.

        • Hi LowEndAdmin

Yep the Kiwi probably lives and breathes it just like me.
You guys should check it out, its like football but without all the protective gear.
Canada has quite a good team as well.

  14. Hi Jack
In the end it was found that it was Cisco Guard fail.
DDoS was the reason the containers where dropping of the network.
The DC was null routing the traffic and it took quite a while to get a straight answer as the help desk could not tell me much but once a the ticket was escalated I started to get the right info.

    Thank you for your concern.

    Regards
    Justin
