LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

ZazoomVPS - $7 1GB KVM/OpenVZ VPS in Scranton

Updated December 2011 — Daniel has sold the VPS hosting business in September but the website has gone offline since 24 November 2011, as the new owner hasn’t been paying the bill.

ZazoomVPS Daniel from ZazoomVPS has sent me some pretty nice offers for the LowEndBox readers. Two choices and one price — $7/month. It gets you either a KVM plan (KVM sign up link) or an OpenVZ plan (OpenVZ sign up link). Very similar spec:

  • 1GB memory/1GB swap for KVM and 2GB burstable memory for OpenVZ
  • 30GB storage
  • 1.5TB/month data transfer
  • KVM/OpenVZ + SolusVM

Servers with VolumeDrive in Scranton PA. I guess most people here would be able to tell the difference between KVM and OpenVZ. One for full hardware virtualization and alternative OS install. Another one for better performance and simplified installation, management and upgrade/downgrades.

Too cheap for my liking, nor is Scranton my preferred location but some of you guys are going to take up the offer anyway. Daniel has been quite an active participant here on this blog, although haven’t seen him much on LowEndTalk.

I don’t like the TOS at all.

    > We currently do not allow IRC or IRC bots to be operated on our servers.

    > Using a server primarily for backups (33%+ diskspace being used for backups) is prohibited, and offending files may be removed or your account suspended.

    > We reserve the right to refuse, cancel or suspend service, at our sole discretion.

    > ZazoomVPS reserves the right to amend any or all of the above policies, guidelines and disclaimer without notification. We also retain the right to increase any pricing and make changes to our account plans without notification.

    > Audio/Video Streaming is not hosting friendly. As such, ZazoomVPS does not allow any streaming of audio or video content. Offending accounts will be suspended without noticed or terminated.

    • IRC related restriction would be associated with BurstNET, who provides network for VolumeDrive. Backup space and streaming — those sound like shared hosting restrictions, which is just plain weird for VPS providers.

Thats pretty much standard in this industry.

        > ZazoomVPS reserves the right to amend any or all of the above policies, guidelines and disclaimer without notification. We also retain the right to increase any pricing and make changes to our account plans without notification.

Also pretty standard in the industry.

        • Mind commenting on backup space usage and audio/video streaming?

          August 10, 2011 @ 7:33 am | Reply
        • Audio/Video streaming should never of been in there, I will remove that later today.

We’ve had a few people that set their server to automatically backup their own server every minute and all backups, causing their space to get full within 2 hours, and when you have someone trying to backup 60GB (which only really contained 0.5GB of data), we put that rule in place, however it dosen’t seem to be an issue anymore, so it will probably be removed, and since we do KVM now, its not enforceable.

the reason for “no backup” policy is simple: the nodes are heavily undersold. if you add “no streaming” policy there’s no chance in hell anyone would be able to use their allocated recources. pretty much what all oversellers hope for

a typo: nodes are heavily oversold

          August 10, 2011 @ 2:55 pm | Reply
        • The reason for that rule was because of some customers excessively backing up (every minute), its been removed since it no longer can be enforced.

        • Not to mention on KVM its physically impossible for us to oversell on diskspace.

  3. Also, our KVMs are as easy to install as our OpenVZ, we have some pretty sexy KVM templates in our SolusVM that allow you to install an OS on a KVM VM in seconds.

    • I find this amazing since solusvm doesn’t support templates, only templates on XEN HVM :)

AFAIK users cannot load their own ISO with KVM/SolusVM but it says “Load your own ISO” on your front page. Is it possible for the user to upload their ISO to load it on their KVM?

    August 10, 2011 @ 9:32 am | Reply
    • Yep, pass us a link to your requested ISO in a support ticket, and we will mount it on your account, as long as its not illegal and compatible with KVM.

There is no way, even with VolumeDrive, Daniel can come out on top with those kind of prices. I would suggest everyone stay clear of this one.

    August 10, 2011 @ 12:12 pm | Reply
    • Actually it is. Its a very simple maths:

      RAM:

      54.95+(85/12)+10+10 = 82.03333333

      (1024*15.5)-512 = 187.240959

      1024/187.240959 = $5.468888889

+ The 30GB HDD is very easily do able.

This does not include any type of support costs, and very low profit.

        August 10, 2011 @ 1:09 pm | Reply
        • These are budget VPS’s you aren’t going to make a $10 or $20 profit.

Depending on what staffing requirements depends on the cost of staff. This also varies along with skill level, time shifts and much more.

        • In short you have no idea of the business relationship Daniel has with VolumeDrive so you can not accurately estimate his costings per client or VPS. Only he can reveal the true numbers.

By your reckoning BuyVM is also not to be trusted and BuyVM is very well respected on this blog.

I stopped reading at IRC not allowed. Sorry, but that’s a joke. None of the 3 big IRC servers have hostserv. Only a few of the top 5 IRC servers have Chanserv/Nickserv. Using a VPS for an irc client is more stable than using a home connection is some cases ( because of power issues or what not ). People have been masking their hosts on IRC before some of you were born in 88′ – Regardless, If you’re going to block IRC, you might as well say no to PROXY servers and VPN.. What a joke… Thanks but no thanks.

    Really good host

Bought 3 of these servers from them, Instant setup
Installed Debian via VNC everything is working good

    Had a disk I/O problem
    Daniel fixed it

Also network is slow right now, opened a support ticker
He said it’s due to alot of people are uploading their data since this is a fresh new node (Will post network test tomorrow)

    CPU is not bad:

    root@debian:~# egrep 'GHz|MHz' /proc/cpuinfo
    cpu MHz : 2660.064
    cpu MHz : 2660.064

    Did some tests:

    Disk I/O

    root@debian:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 conv=fdatasync
    512+0 records in
    512+0 records out
    33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 0.292186 s, 115 MB/s

    root@debian:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
    16384+0 records in
    16384+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 12.2306 s, 87.8 MB/s
    root@debian:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 conv=fdatasync

I’m happy with this server, it’s cheap and fast!

And I specially dont expect teenagers to have stable economy versus more mature ppl.

But I would love to see the opposit here if possible :-)- IF you are a teenager that is.

When the problems arrive, it doesnt matter much the age of the person, if theyre not used to handle stress they will fail.

In this case, the most important question would be how many support staff on-site and offsite?

Although I havent bought a VPS from this provider yet, I do have a positive experience with support. I opened a ticket to ask a question and got a response almost instantly. I was honestly surprised with the speed of the response. A+ there.

I am, however, still a little unsure about my question, So I’ll post it here to get a second opinion.

“Do you allow installing a usenet client on the VPS? one such as Sabnzbd?
I ask this because usenet usually downloads at full network speed and I’m not sure if this would affect other users on the same node.”

So what do you guys think? is it not recommended? or would it be alright. I just don’t want to be suspended for using too much of the network (although I would stay within the bandwidth limit, of course)

Daniel responded “I suppose usenet would be ok, but if it downloads at full network speed and affects other clients, then – as all other VPS providers – it wouldn’t be a ideal thing to have running.”

    • rm:

If one client staying within his purchased “1.5TB/month data transfer” can negatively affect other clients, then their node/network is badly misconfigured/oversold. Or is it “you have 1.5TB but can’t download at full speed blah blah”, wtf.

      August 14, 2011 @ 6:48 am | Reply
      • Bandwidth is not oversold.

I appears I have worded that reply wrong, your more then free to use your 1.5TB of bandwidth available to you, its yours. However, if your going to be running something that is going to download at 100Mbps constantly for days and days, then your going to affect other users on that node. (eg BitTorrent)

Although running you would pretty much run out of bandwidth after around 24 hours of downloading constantly at 100Mbps.

        • Well, we missed out on the target for yesterday :(

I’m going to release the stock in portions at different times, so every timezone has a chance to get a piece of cake.

        • Thanks for the update Daniel. Can you have an update page regarding the servers at least? Something like doesbuyvmhavestock.com so we would know, or a countdown.

I hope you’re fine with it. Or if not, kindly drop your email here so I can contact you.

          Regards

And that site was suggested, but sure copied.

The jitter should be due to my wireless router, since I forgot my iMAC using wifi.

FYI, The upload bandwidth from the servers are capped to around 5Mbits/sec, i can never transfer faster than 400Kbytes /sec.

    August 20, 2011 @ 7:07 am | Reply
    • Its not capped, (as far as we know), but it may depend where your uploading too.

Uploading is usually not as fast as downloading.

Are these guys still in business?

Their website is down, their Control Panel says my account doesn’t exist.

Have they vanished or what? I thought something was suspicious when I realized that I didn’t receive an invoice from them this month.
