Bret from urgentVPS emailed me last week that they have deployed a new hypervisor box for their Xen/OnApp-based VPS offerings, and they need to fill it up. They did have some data center move this year and hopefully things are settling down now.

Yup, all normal – I’m not 100% sure if I sent the correct information to LEA when I sent it through, but we’ve always done 3 IP addresses per VM as standard :-)

We’ll take a look, we usually expect results of around 100MB/s however it’s not always the greatest test to do to get the full picture. It’s more than likely the wave of new clients running the same test and all configuring their containers at the same time, but that’s no excuse! We’ll look into it :-)
I’ve benchmarked several OnApp providers and I think that 100MB/s is quite standard. Let us know any news about it! :-)

Just a quick notice – unfortunately all DirectAdmin licenses were taken (extremely quickly, too!) but on the plus side, we’ve now introduce a FreeBSD OS image on our system for all you BSD fans :-)

DA is much better than cPanel IMO, loads faster, less resource usage, and doesn’t treat you like that much of an idiot.. at least you can add PTR, AAAA, etc as an enduser, unlike cPanel
Oh I know it’s much faster, it doesn’t drag like cpanel and uses way less just I’ve never really seen many people bite for it.

Our soccer moms seem to prefer it. Some of them got lost quite often with Cpanel when we used to offer it.
DA still has issues but seems to be better organized for folks.
We actually have quite a few clients that choose DirectAdmin (although whether it’s because the licensing is cheaper, I don’t know!) for their servers. I know I enjoy using it on my own test server! :-)

If there is nothing important there or you have backup, you can always reimage and start again.
Yes, at the moment it looks like that’s what I will do, even though I did a lot of work on the box. Fortunately I made an offsite backup.
But, especially for new readers, I do want to note that urgentVPS is a great ISP with very nice VPS plans and very fast hardware. So I’m still a satisfied customer, the VPS problem was my own fault. As we say, “he who burns his own bum has to sit on the blisters.” :-)

Performance is not the best I’ve seen but it’s quite consistent which is good IMHO.
There was a slight error in the post above, UV-PLAN0 VMs are actually on 50Mbit ports, so you’re near enough maxing out the connection you’ve been given to your container :-) We’re doing some work on our SAN in the next month or so (dates haven’t been set in stone just yet) which will greatly improve the bandwidth and space available within the pool so an exciting end to the year for us!
Only a few of these left now, be quick to grab one before we sell out!

Servers are all in our Frankfurt, Germany datacentre – however our IP range is registered to our office in the United Kingdom :-)

So far this seams like excellent VPS for website, some tweaking and works great… Support is there when u need it.

I think LEA went from our previous e-mails to him (although I’m not 100% sure) as I believe my last e-mail to him was written with a 50Mbit port :-) Just to confirm that these VMs are on 50Mbit ports, not 100!
A ping to a very large and reliable site nearby shows:
99 packets transmitted, 34 packets received, 65.7% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 7.862/10.008/68.782/10.233 ms
This is a very common thing for urgentVPS in my experience… low bandwidth and slow servers. When I started my contract October 25th everything was extremely fast. I think the boxes might be overcommited, because “fast” and “reliable” have both declined ever since. Support is o.k. (well, you get some reaction anyway) but speed and reliability must be improved, not unimproved.
I’ve received a reply from Bret and for transparency I’ll post it here:
“We’re continuing to work with our transit providers to determine the possible reasons behind the re-occurring problems. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and hope to have a fix for this as soon as possible.”
Thanks, Bret, for acknowledging and working on this. Problems happen but they are less frustrating when they’re acknowledged and will be resolved.

First off apologies for the issues that you’ve experienced since you’ve been a client with us, this is not the norm and something that we’re working hard on rectifying. In regards to being over committed, this simply isn’t the case. Hardware is 100% non oversold on our infrastructure, we don’t utilise the “balloon” feature to oversell RAM on Xen either so what you pay for is what you’re receiving and what has been allocated to you on one of our hypervisors :-)
For people that were interested in picking up one of these offers that missed out before due to being sold out, there’s some good news for you as we’ve stocked a further 10 at the special LEB pricing (use the code located in the original post at the top or use the direct order link LEA has provided which will automatically honour the discount) so hopefully people that missed out before can get one now.
In regards to the network issue, we believe we’ve tracked it down and techs are working to resolve this shortly. We will provide a further update momentarily.

Yes, I have to take that remark I made earlier back with regards to the actual speed of the VPS. There are indeed networking issues, but I have compiled a few applications and this went with the same speed (of lightning ;) ) as before. Sorry about that, good luck fixing the network issue.

Don’t trust this hoster as if you ” ever ” do a full year paiement, they may delete your account for about 3 months after the paiement and **** you around for the time left on your subscrition.
If you are wondering, yes, i’m hangry at this hoster as i’ve sent many mail, even had Bret online telling : ” he will do a check ” and the last time than i checked, they simply closed the ticket.
I agree. This hoster is focusing on getting new customers but not keeping old customers. I have rented two VPS systems and BOTH have had massive file loss rendering the systems unusable — only a reinstall was possible. The hoster does not respond to queries. and while I have been very patient I have no choice but to mark their service as a malpractice. Lawyers are currently looking into that.
Oh yeah, they said that they could not respond in a reasonable amount of time because it was christmas. What a joke. This ISP won’t last another year, I promise you that. Unless they get their act together and learn about quality service and customer care.
Hi all, we’re typing this four people, we’re members of a larger group of both hobbyists and IT pros. We want to seriously warn you — do NOT trust this company UrgentVPS!
We have three low end vps boxes with urgentvps which we found via this site. We started with the most basic setup and get familiar with them first, if happy we agreed to update to a larger hosting plan… after all no man would bet all of his hard earned money on one horse especially if you don’t know the horse!
So now is a few months later and we unanimously agree to one thing: urgentVPS is crap to the max!! Their servers are slow as hell, frequent ping timeouts, bandwidth of 5kB/sec, CPU made of card board because compiling even a simple program takes forever!
Then the guys who apparently run this company, they’re rude and obnoxious teenagers with no clue! They hardly ever respond to tickets apart from telling you one thing, is ‘thanks for your ticket, i have forwarded it to my collegue’ but then there won’t be a reply anymore!
We did not really have data loss like Mark but we’re not surprised! Unless you consider this data loss: type something, wait five minutes and see it appear on your screen!
The worst thing that happened is this: our security pro did a few simple tests and within five minutes he found issues that made him so angry he stopped testing and won’t reconnect. This guy is a professional doing pen testing for lots of companies. He found that ssh root access is enabled by default and, get this, there is an entry in root’s .ssh/authorized_keys file!!!
We moved our important stuff out of the way and we’re just going to use these servers for educational purposes until the contract expires. Someone should audit this company and publish the results!
So if you were thinking about choosing this provider: don’t!!!
My experience was actually that the service was mostly okay. Until about two weeks ago, when a SAN problem destroyed my VPS’ filesystem. Put in a ticket to have it reimaged… a day later, it was re-imaged.
A week later, the SAN broke and the filesystem is corrupt. Again.
