Those are OpenVZ/SolusVM plans. You’ll find that $7 for “Professional” has actually the most expensive “offer” from ChicagoVPS since May (their list of previous offers here). I guess the problem with random discount is that those who are cheap and have time would actually wait until a better promotion is available — a possible lost of potential customer there.
You should also be able to see various benchmark posted by their clients in the previous posts. A mixed result really, but on the reflection of Chris’ comment here, at least they have tried hard to keep their VPS stable. According to my tracking, ChicagoVPS.net’s home page is definitely one of the more stable ones out there (only a brief outage in September in 12 months).
Their servers are with ColoCrossing in Chicago.

The most stable VPS I have.
I have a ChicagoVPS from the 2GB sale, and it’s been extremely stable. Disk performance can vary, but dd tests are typically around 60MB/s, ioping average is about 26ms, though it can spike. Overall it’s a good server for the money.
Agree with previous posters about ChicagoVPS. They provide stable nodes and responsive support from Jeremiah and Chris.
I got one of their 1GB from their last promo.. Stable one tbh, haven’t experienced any problems at all.

Interested in the previous $7/2GB or $5/1GB offers. I have one question: what’s the difference between [2GB ram + 0GB burst] and [1GB ram + 1GB burst]? In SolusVM I can see the difference but on VPS I see 2GB ram for both of them. Not sure if it’s just marketing or it does matters.
@danielfeng: with 2Gb (0Gb burst) your processes should always be able to allocate 2Gb of memory. With 1Gb+1Gb burst you can only guarantee 1Gb, after that allocations may fail if the host machine has none of its pool spare. The trouble with burstable memory is that the processes in your container don’t know about it: they see the full2Gb so will try to use it if they need to and so may fall over with unexpected allocation errors. Burstable memory is essentially a way to over-sell memory: it works on the basis that not all the VMs need their full allocation all the time.
Note that Xgb guaranteed memory does not mean that you have that much physical RAM directly allocated to your VPS: it is allocated from the host server’s pool which includes its physical RAM and paging space on disc. You have to trust that the host doesn’t cram so many onto one host that most of it is running from disc (which would be very very slow), but with no bursting enabled at least you know that your processes will be able to use as much as they can see.
I always judge an OVZ VPS by the guaranteed RAM, not the maximum. In fact I prefer hosts that don’t use the burst facillity (IMO it might make sense when you are partitioning out your own hardware for your own tasks, but I don’t like the idea for “shared” VPS hosting as you simply don;t know what the other VPSs are up to so have no idea at any given time if you can burst or not (until you try and get allocation errors or not)

I think that its my second month with them and my monitoring service shows 100% availability. They are polite on the comunication also (asked a few things more). I would like to stay with them.

They cancelled my VPS no warning “due to I/O Abuse.” I am not sure if they meant upload/download or harddrive I/O. I was running a non-busy mine craft server of 4 people. So beware if you wanted this for minecraft.

Where do you get the idea that your VPS was cancelled? The ticket simply stated that you were suspended, not terminated. If you want your service back on just reply to the ticket and explain yourself there.
We do not terminate anyone unless they do not reply. If you decide to not reply then yes your service will be terminated.

Suspended is a term I would loosely relate to termination. Also, it never stated I should or even had a chance to fight it or explain myself. It was a 1 sentence email.

You are correct though. Let me rephrase:
Chicago suspended my VPS with no warning, and never made clear any actions that could be done to reverse this decision. I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone if you don’t like being randomly “suspended” and then have to explain why you were using the VPS despite it not violating any of the following mentioned on their Acceptable Use policy: Offensive Content, Bulk Email, Copyright Infringments, Obiding by newsgroup, chat forums or other network rules.
Please note that in their service they apparently reserve the right to suspend your service and your access to any of your files/property when and if they see fit. Especially if it you are utilizing full resources that you paid for.
But yeah. If you want to un-suspend me, go ahead. I think I already explained why I had extensive I/O abuse: Minecraft. (PS: perhaps add no minecraft policy)

We allow minecraft servers, as we host a few hundred of them. You will be suspended without any warning. One VPS can effect a whole node, meaning everyone will be hurt as a result. If anyone else was abusing their resources causing a high I/O and was affecting your services would you want me to allow then to keep running until I await an answer? Absolutely not, you don’t know how long it will take for someone to respond.
I do agree with you, a one sentence answer is not enough, and should have been explained. I have talked with Luc and told him this cannot happen again.

a 44 load and 103% disk I/O utilization for your VPS alone is abusive, not resource utilization.
I have absolutely 0 issues with MineCraft, and as Chris stated, we host hundreds of them, which we do.
I also cannot allow abuse to continue to affect everyone else on the node that is starving to do their own thing(s) because your VPS is hogging the I/O and CPU.

Looks like a pretty nice offer, but I’ll wait and see if you’ll rerun your 2GB for $7 promo. $7 for these specs is very nice, but I think I’ll pass until the next offer.
I must say, you guys and Up2VPS are the only ones who ever managed to pull off 2GB for $7 offers and survive… Seeing as eNetSouth is gone, and iPap.co/LydiaNet is basically in zombie mode. I’m quite impressed.

Have to say for the price these guys have been excellent, only issue is sometimes time to first byte will take over 15 seconds just to load wordpress.. after the initial TTFB the page loads fine and static pages don’t seem to be effected by this issue. Could be something to do with loading mysql??
Also they wanted $5 to add 1 extra slot for solusvm “central backup” which is kinda steep since my VPS is only $5/mth, other than that these guys have been great, reasonably stable overall!!

Really funny.. the day after I cancelled my paypal subscription the VPS is actually really fast now!! the issue with initial TTFB seem to have completely disappeared?? and the %wa has decreased dramatically. In all the 3 months I owned the VPS always had an issue with initial TTFB loading slow.. and occasional high %wa that seemed to be getting worse. Had it been like this all along I probably never would have cancelled, go figure..
The first byte thing is not ChicagoVPS’ problem…
Your webserver seems to buffer PHP output until it is finished and then sends everything.
If your PHP page takes 15 seconds to render, then the webserver will wait 15 seconds with sending the first byte ;-)

We will offer the $7 for 2GB offer again at some point. However I do not see this in the near future for 2 reasons. One is the number of IP’s, an offer like that brings in so many IP’s I have to make sure I can get the allocations from our provider. Second is to make sure we have enough servers. Last time we held off for 3/4 of the month but I would like to have enough room to take on as many orders that come in for the full month. I see this being around spring time or early summer.

Signed up late June this year with the 1GB Xen promo advertised on LEB:

Asked to have +20GB space and they gave it, and for quite a reasonable price. Support was responsive and helpful whenever an issue cropped up. Good I/O and network performance.

Do not use LowEndBox for support issues. Go to your hosting provider and issue a ticket there.
While the node did have an experienced downtime, most VPS’s are coming back up already. Thanks to some keen work on my part here, i found a couple of issues with the server forcing me to reboot it once it stopped responding to external communications.

I wasn’t using it for support issues. I was just pointing out the fact that the server had crashed for others to know. My vps is back up now. Thanks for the fast reply and quick response on the issue. My vps came back up before I could even submit a ticket. Impressive! My previous provider would have taken a day or two to fix it.
I have the 2GB plan and pay full price for it. Sometimes it can get a little slow but the box is always up. Never have any problems with it since I signed up 1 year ago.

I have a 1GB VPS with ChicagoVPS. Everything was running smoothly, but last few days I experienced some latency. I don;t know if it was server-side (HW) or bandwidth. Yesterday night, I did some downloads, and I actually ah dto stop the downloads because they were running at 70 KB/s to 180 KB/s down, which is waaay tooo slow.
I opened a trouble ticket immediately. 18 hours later, now I check, and they closed my trouble ticket without ever responding to it. This is not a way to do business! My VPS is coming for renewal on the 14th, I will see how they will handle from now on till 14th.
Well, stuff sometimes happens, and ChicagoVPS apologized to me for not responding my ticket and closing it. I considered it very weird given very good reviews here on LEB. The issue has now been resolved, I am a very light user of VPS but when I sue it I want to have it. While issue can happen (e.g. bandwidth problem, ChicagoVPS says there was some temporary issue that caused that) I really got upset that the ticket was closed instead of at least being replied to something. But now everything is OK, I understand that this (ticket closing) happened by accident. So we are on a good path again.

I’ve been with ChicagoVPS almost a year with no issue whereas it’s starting now..
Anyway, it’s running better now.. but still no respond for my ticket…

Just wanted to say that I ended up purchasing a Xen 2GB plan for Minecraft (I was sick of OpenVZ), and it’s doing great. I obviously can’t comment on this offer or their OpenVZ plans, but so far I am extremely impressed. IO is good, I ran a test when I got it and it was around 80MB/s, and the network speed when transferring some stuff from a Florida VPS was 8MB/s, and I got it to 11MB/s on a speedtest, so very happy there also. My only gripe is that the CPU is a little slow (it appears to be 2 2.0GHz cores, although so far it’s worked out really well, I just prefer faster cores for Minecraft).
So, anyways, I’m very impressed so far. No comments on support, I haven’t used it, everything has gone smooth. Provisioning was literally done 5 seconds after paying the invoice. $25 was a little pricy, but it blows any other 2GB Xen offer out of the water, and the Java performance increase over OVZ is very noticeable.

Well I “was” really excited to have my first VPS. After having it for 3 days my account has been suspended due to I/O. No notice, tried to connect to server via ssh and it was off line. When I went to my portal it said server suspended, put in a ticket.
