In today’s Google Cloud Blog Post, Product Managers Subra Chandramouli and Jamie Kinney announced plans for expanding the use of Arm® architecture CPUs at Google Cloud.
Following last year’s introduction of Arm processors, today’s Google Cloud Blog post featured “the Preview release of our first VM family based on the Arm architecture, Tau T2A.” Tau VMs come in “predefined VM shapes,” including “up to 48 vCPUs per VM” and “4GB of memory per vCPU.” Google’s Tau VM family will “offer up to 32 Gbps networking bandwidth and a wide range of network attached storage options.”
Chris Bergey, SVP & GM, Infrastructure Line of Business, Arm, also announced today in the Arm Newsroom that Big Cloud has become “all in” on Arm. In other words, it’s not only Google, “Neoverse is in all the major public clouds.”
Most everyone here on the Low End is familiar with Oracle’s Arm powered free tier 4 Arm CPU, 12 GB RAM, 200 GB disk instances. Low End Talk has a long standing Oracle Cloud Free Tier thread. Oracle Cloud Free Tier is popular here on the Low End because it offers more more power and space for free than competing providers. Plus, Oracle’s free tier is for an unlimited time, unlike some other providers’ free tiers.
Further down in Google’s Blog post, beneath endorsements from customers like Harvard and partners like Arm, beneath enthusiastic cheering like, “Google Cloud is ramping up its support for Arm,” I did find something which made me wonder whether Google has been watching Oracle.
“When Tau T2A reaches General Availability later this year, we’ll continue to offer a generous trial program that offers up to 8 vCPUs and 32 GB of RAM at no cost.”

In the past, Google Cloud’s free tier has been time unlimited, like Oracle, and unlike Amazon. Later this year, we might see Google free tier offering more vCPUs and more memory than Oracle.

This is something positive. I hope that it will be really free of charge. I use Oracle Free Tier for almost a year and I am so happy. If I get one from Google it will be win-win situation.
I’m looking forward to it, free up to 32Gb :)
Hopefully Google at least keeps it and doesn’t just randomly suspend it. No, it isn’t because I was hosting a VPN in it. For some reason, 4vCore and 24GiB memory ARM instance isn’t “Always Free eligible” (but the x86 ones work fine)
It is eligible, you may have to use 10% of CPU constantly (“resources”) to not be randomly shutdown
Exciting news from Google Cloud! The upcoming offering of 8 vCPUs and 32GB RAM is sure to be a game-changer for users seeking powerful cloud computing resources. With such robust specifications, businesses and developers will have the necessary firepower to handle demanding workloads and run resource-intensive applications efficiently. Looking forward to exploring the capabilities of this new offering! 💻🚀 #GoogleCloud #CloudComputing #TechNews
