Today is National Comic Book Day. In the US, the Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck (1837) is acknowledged as the first comic book, though there is a competing claim from Scotland’s Glasgow Looking Glass (1825). I’m not an expert, but the Glasgow Looking Glass seems more of a single-panel form, while Obadiah Oldbuck is genuine sequential art, but we’ll leave it to academics to debate.
