123Systems - $3.82 256MB OpenVZ VPS Exclusive Offer

123Systems Andrew from 123Systems wrote to me a few days ago (seriously, you must be 4th Andrew Moore I know). The “excuse” this time is that 123Systems is looking at releasing Xen VPS plans before winter (starting from $4/month), so they are keen to fill up all their OpenVZ boxes. This promotion applies to their Dallas based OpenVZ plans, and use coupon code LEB45DLTX to get 45% off recurring discount for any payment terms. Their Linux-256-SolusVM comes down to $3.82/month after the discount, which has

  • 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

If 256MB is too low end for you, here is another link that you can get 512MB/1024MB memory, 20GB storage, 1TB/month data OpenVZ plan for $6.95/month, in the same Dallas data center. If you choose to pay annually, and use promo code STOCK0 you can even 40% more discount to $43.20/year ($3.60/month). Now that is cheap from a quality DC (Limestone) and a reputable budget VPS provider.

  1. XEN Will be coming Middle to late November, We have a plan/pricing structure set to 128/256 starting @ $4 and moving up from there, Once we release XEN we will not be doing much with OpenVZ for a while so we can focus more on XEN (Rather a way to offer Profitable/Quality/Budget XEN Packages.) We revolve around Budget as you can see and we do not use Cheap DataCenters to do it. Once OpenVZ is gone “Fully” we will probably not release any further stock until Q1 2011.

    <$43.20/month (Should be /year)

Thanks LEA (I know we get featured a lot on here, But atleast we contribute!)

We can’t make everyone happy. Especially in the budget market, There are people out there who do expect more from their $3~6 server than we are able to deliver. What we do offer is more than adequate however :)

Whether is $1, or $100 per month, all we want is honest up-time.
this guy never answers the question when it’s down, and 2-4 days later, wow, server is up.
“Why are you complaining, the server is up”, ya after 3-4 days.
Read WHT thread, this guy is painting a false all over the place, whether it’s $1 or $6, Andrew,
the server should be up, do you know the meaning of ‘up’? not after 3-4 days, NOW!

    • I have always replied to every thread that has been opened on WHT. We had a problem in Chicago a while back yes, That was resolved and now they have all been running with near 20 days of uptime, So wherever you are getting your “Current” information from it is false. We have NEVER had 3-4 days of straight downtime, We have never had a downtime that lasted more than a few hours.

There is a large difference between being straight forward and trolling, Yes I’m straight forward with a situation and I always will be, Although i have never said what Chiris has stated “why are you complaining” if he could link/show me where that was said that would help, Because i would have never said that straight forward or not.

We have numerous customers who can vouch for support/uptime.

  10. I’ve been reading comments against 123Systems lately both on WHT and here. Think I just need to put in my .02.

I have two VPSs with 123Systems right now. Honestly speaking… they impressed me more than anything else. Their tech Gary (does this guy sleep?), always answered my tickets in a few minutes time – I’ve submitted tickets (CST) 3AM in the morning, 10AM, 7PM, and 11PM. Except one time took like 30+ minutes on a “low” priority ticket. Gary is a straight cut guy. You tell him what the problem is, he get to it without fuss. I asked him to give me the cause of downtime (yes, there has been unexpected downtimes), he straight tells me so. Unlike few other providers I’ve dealt with trying to beat around the bushes.

People just expect too much from what they are paying. Here is my expectations when I go with a budget VPS provider: 1) support ticket response time between 1~6 hours. 2) resolve my issues less than 72 hours period. 3) 99.9% uptime is not realistic, but I don’t expect more than 3 total days of downtime in any given month. 4) at least a representative(s) on WHT or LEB respond to people from time to time to let me see at least they are at least somewhat serious about their business. 5) be in business at least for couple a months so I get some use out of low-priced VPS.
    (All in orders of importance)

123Systems, IMHO met all my requirements above and continues to do so. I was one of the first few signed up when they put up their first advertisement.

Also, I do not know what people use budget VPSs for. For me, regardless, a server is a server I can put some use to it. I have all the necessities to ensure that I am aware of any problems before the provider do (there are couple providers I’m currently using actually pro-actively monitor their back-end and I never had unexpected issues from them). This means I have full blown monitoring system(s) in place. I have multi-geographical backup servers. If you are doing something serious with your “budget” VPS, then, have a proper system in place to expect the unexpected. Stop whining when there is a problem because you are not serious about your business and not willing to shell out the cash for a quality product.

Have a realistic goal. Have a realistic (business) plan. And have a realistic expectations for yourself.

    • “not willing to shell out the cash for a quality product.”

I don’t mean 123Systems don’t provide a “quality” product. The definition of “quality” is very different from person to person. I was saying the frown comments I’ve read from people made me feel that 123Systems VPS is probably not “quality” enough for them. :)

Just to clear things up. 123Systems provide “quality” products in my book.

    • Thanks terii — that’s my observation as well.

From my *subjective opinion*, Andrew is a very defensive guy. But then if you are running a business wouldn’t you be defensive? But then it also comes down to the tactics in handling the critics, which I have to admit that Andrew might have fallen to the trap of “feeding the troll” way too many times :)

But service wise, from what I’ve read he and his team know what they are doing. People also need to have their expectation fixed, when they purchase those ultra-cheap virtual servers. Some of the comments here on this blog are just appalling.

      October 31, 2010 @ 10:36 pm | Reply
    • Not about 123systems, but the terri’s post:

Sorry mate. 3 days of downtime in a month? Unacceptable to call it a server. I would call it a remote PC maybe (that too an unreliable one). “For me, regardless, a server is a server I can put some use to it” – again not correct. We can’t call remote hard-disk where one can backup ones data as a server. For most people — a SERVER is something that you can HOST WEBSITES on. 10% downtime for websites (3 days) is a no-no. A budget VPS should atleast provide 99% uptime IMO. (A high end server from reputed company should provide 99.99%. Its way more difficult to provide 99.99% than 99%, but 90% is unacceptable).

(please dont take any personal offence abuot anything!)

Bet then there are still lowend hosts which people NEVER criticize. How often do you see such negative public opinion about as example guy who’s behind ramhost? (this is just example) Yes things go wrong sometimes with ramhost, xenvz, etc.. too, however those guys seems to have always RIGHT answers for public and aren’t scared to admint that things went wrong when they do… I disagree with you about “feeding the troll” trap which put responsability to other people as he’s personally troll too many times… and don’t get me wrong, I am not some “angry” 123Systems customer or something like that. Infact his service might be completely decent however something in his approach turned me away from testing it some time ago…

Why people here around so much dislike Burstnet? Because bad service? I doubt. My rough guess would be that because they wasn’t ever able to admit that it’s mistake on their side and express regrets for this. Because their “we’re not wrong, all rest of you are” position. It’s all about approach to people when things go wrong and as it seems Andrew fail sometimes here. Oh and don’t get me wrong, Andrew might be great guy, but all what I see, all what I know about him are his reponses… and those don’t give always warmth feeling to his users.

People should learn from as example this ramhost guy. No matter how much things goes wrong simetimes there, public still loves him. Why? Because of his perfect service? Dream on, his servers have failures too. Why then? Because he have RIGHT answers. It’s all about approach to people. Take each complain seriously, work with customer, inform him about steps in order to solve issue, learn to say “we are sorry” when it’s obviously mistake on your side, give them impression that you care… and they will love you and your service even when something wont go right.

    • Take each complain seriously, work with customer, inform him about steps in order to solve issue, learn to say “we are sorry” when it’s obviously mistake on your side, give them impression that you care…

      All very good suggestions.

So we have come down to the conclusion that for some of the low end/budget VPS providers, sometimes it is not really the quality of service that is the issue, but rather the attitude of those who are publicly representing the company? After all web hosting is more of a “service” rather than just a “product” and customer satisfaction depends a lot on the quality of communication from the provider.

As of “feeding the troll” — I am not saying one side is always right. Internet flame wars don’t start when only one side is firing shots. It usually takes one party to step aside. So just apologize, make one final convincing statement, and keep quiet. There is no need to continue feeding the troll, otherwise you’ll be lablled troll yourself.

      November 1, 2010 @ 12:22 am | Reply
      • LEA & Terii, you are both right, it depends a lot on the good communication with the provider and their willingness to admit whenever a problem occurred. However, admitting problem to user is a crucial thing as not all user have sufficient knowledge about administering servers & networks. Many new VPS users tends to have more expectations than what is offered and that what makes things harder for the providers. They have to keep a good reputation in one hand, but on the other hand they are dealing with problematic user that sometimes come with irrelevant problems. That is where the Internet flame wars might started, and the troll is lurking.

If I have to pay say $55/mo for a VPS with a same spec that I can get through LEB for $6.95/mo, then my expectation would be there should be no unplanned downtime and/or the response time should not exceed 10 minutes (not by autoresponder) and the resolution time should not exceed 30 minutes, which means that the provider must have personnels who work 24/7 and sufficient mirror machines or at least spare machines and spare parts (that’ll cost a lot) to anticipate prolonged downtime.

By providing low end VPS, many providers must cut down the cost so much, and hiring new hands is out of questions. So, as long as we know what’s going on and what to expect during down times (ie. temporarily move to our own backup server), that’s acceptable.

  12. I just want to add one positive feedback here.
My current VPS are with QuickWeb (Supa VZ2) and 123System (with 1 year subscription). Both of them are good, and I don’t have any problem with the services or the VPS. If I have a problem, then it must be at my side, my own configuration, because I’m new in Linux world.

Since we are on 123System threads, I will only talk about them.

For Mr. Andrew and his team, since my first time joining them at 02 September 2010, I only have 4 tickets, and all of them are not complaining, I’m just asking for some help like the following :
    1. Help with the Paypal payment, because my order were marked as fraud. Fixed immediatelly
    2. Enabling the Tun/Tap modules, fixed within 4 hours, maybe it’s bussy time.
    3. Managing the VPN, and it is my own fault that I don’t read the TOS, so they decline it.
    4. Enabling the iptables for my VPS, helped by Mr. Garry in 10 minutes.

Well, I never face any downtime, although I get an email about the downtime. Overall, every company have their own way to run the business, for providing a safe and a good way for their customer, and also for the company.
And the best way for us, the customers, is try to communicate with a good way. If we are respecting or honouring the company or another people, I will sure, we will get a positive feedback too.

    • The emails are not user specified, For example if one user has a VPS in Orlando he/she would receive an email regarding downtime in Chicago. The Outage/maintenance emails are not service specific they are sent globally regardless of the service. Outages/Maintenance is something everyone should know Even if it does not effect them.

  14. Yes, like this email, at 9/24/2010 :

“123Systems is here to before hand apologize for the recent downtime that everyone has been having in Chicago. Here’s the explanation however, Earlier this week 123Systems updated our OpenVZ kernels to the latest kernel which was .5 and this was a huge security patch for x86_64 operating systems, While we figured the issue to be resolved it was not. “

  15. One more positive comment here – I had a VPS with 123Systems for 3 months – the uptime, the speed of the servers and the network connectivity were perfect. The only reason to cancel the service was that the earnings from the projects that were hosted on the vps were not enough.

I was having issues with my VPS constantly going down, even though /var/log/messages and other system logs showed no indication of panics or the system locking up on my end. I suspected a problem with my container and reported it to 123Systems via their support desk.

Gary’s only answer was to simply keep rebooting my VPS when I reported downtime, even though I could have done that through SolusVM on my own. 123Systems was unwilling to do anything beyond that:
“Once again i do not address the cause of the downtime since that is not my job i only bring it back online.” ~Gary

Support at 123Systems seems to consist primarily of quick fixes and one-line responses. I ended up getting a refund after calling 2Checkout. My VPS is hosted elsewhere now.
