AlienVPS - $4 512MB OpenVZ VPS in New York

AlienVPS Russel from AlienVPS emailed me about their Holiday VPS Plans for the upcoming Christmas season (which was also posted on WHT). Besides their Abduction plans drops to $15/year (190MB memory/220MB vswap, 19GB storage & 190GB/month data), they have also been promoting the “Wrap Speed” plans starting at $4/month for “Wrap 1” with the following spec:

  • 512MB memory/512MB vswap
  • 20GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer on 50Mbps
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Direct signup link here, and it is available in New York only (whereas you can get Las Vegas node for Abduction plans). Test IP: 199.167.194.101. Honestly it’s actually exactly the same as their last offer here, but dressed in Santa Clauses’ colours. AlienVPS has been a brand of webRolun since this year. I had an earlier offer — $19/year Abduction plan in Las Vegas — running a low traffic blog. The performance was great… when the network works — which has been over the last month and half but was patchy beforehand.

Still, still much much better than when AlienVPS was with its previous owner :)

What’s the difference between VSwap and Burst Ram ?

    December 9, 2011 @ 5:05 am | Reply
    • Tom:

Depends on overselling, if it’s not significant vswap will use 3 times less memory on common apps like Apache. Good stuff overall.

I still pay 19/y sadly and not 15/y, but for NYC, this is still a very good deal with very decent performance. And surely this is the best location for anyone European to have a US IP VPN ;)

      • Hi Tom, what do you mean with you last sentence? Is it some legal or tax related stuff?

        December 9, 2011 @ 4:51 pm | Reply
        • Paul:

It’s a location thing mostly. NY offers the closest (and supposedly fastest) location for European-based customers looking for US-based proxy IP or VPN/S access.

        • Tom:

          Thanks for explaining Paul.

It’s for watching Hulu, Netflix. This websites need US IP and EU-NYC has the best routing with lowest ping and good speed to watch such streaming websites.

  4. I have one in Las Vegas and other in NY

    Overall good.
I have experienced the same problems in Las Vegas, and still sometimes I have little network outages.
My NY one has more than 80 days of uptime, and the LV one more than 60 days.
But after that I can give them an 8.5/10 =P

    • I’m unfortunate enough to have a server colocated in the same datacenter as AlienVPS, and have the same general network issues. I can ping my AlienVPS box, another provider on the same subnet, and my colocated server and get the exact same network performance – and I’m in Las Vegas myself.

The facility has gotten better, but not by much, and I need to decide if I really want to keep my server there.

      • Hehe. Well, there are other datacenters in Las Vegas?

Becaus IMHO, that is a location where you get almost the same ping from all the farthest USA locations.

      • I have a VZ UFO 6 in New York, and I run Minecraft, lighttpd, and TeamSpeak 3. Once they moved me to a new node, I’ve had less issues with lag. I can say that’s worth the money, just be sure you know how RAM works, or your server will randomly kill itself.

I don’t see how anyone runs a decent mc server on a vps. I ran mc on a true dedicated setup with 2gb of ram and a quad core cpu and with all of the plugins, we still had issues beyond 5 players.

If I “activate” the Las Vegas abduction offer, the cart shows $19/yr, whilst the New York offer is $15/yr. It might be just a mistake, I don’t know.

While everything seems to be nice and fast on my 4$ Warp 1 plan when looking at the usual dd/cachefly/UnixBench results, I still have some issues with RTMP streaming through this server. There’s a _lot_ of drops/buffering going on, makes watching Hulu+ or any other .flv stream (including Youtube) through a VPN almost unbearable. I’m talking about a 200-300 kb/s stream of data here.

I use an 100% identical setup on a 50% cheaper, less powerful super low budget openVZ server from a competitor with 40% more ping duration which shows a lot less video stuttering (not perfect either, but a lot less than on this server).

I’m going to try if I get some comparable numbers when using rtmpdump. Let me know if you’re interested in the results.

RTMPDump seems to be a good idea to test if a VPS is capable of streaming video. The $2 VPS streamed the flash video in under 2 minutes, while the AlienVPS server aborted the stream at 83% after almost 5 minutes. I have no idea what’s going on here since the server shines when it comes to downloading large volumes of data.

RTMPDump version was identical and pulled straight from git today. The RTMP stream itself was served from Akamai at 63.97.94.86.

I was with AlienVPS before they switched into this website template. Only problem was a RAM upgrade that was forgotten but given to for free.

Great company. New York servers are outstanding. They were my first VPS company to go with, since then I jumped to dedi’s.

AlienVPS keep up the good work, my VPS back then was great and I hope you keep them rolling. Russell really knows his stuff. Helped me out through Kloxo and made it easy to understand as a first VPS owner.

    • Hi All,

In an effort to improve the AlienLayer experience we have just hired 4 additional support reps. We now have a total of 7 support reps to assist customers. As a result of the new hires we now have 24/7 live chat coverage. Support desk is staffed 24/7 as usual however response times should now be improved with the additional staff on board.

IPv6 works on LV but not NY. Russell set up addresses for me and they work fine. But LV and NY appear to BOTH be down right now. Sort of defeats the idea of having vps’s at both sites for geo-redundancy. Hmm.

        • paul:

Carter, there are a lot of different templates available so it’s not practical to check ALL the kernels. I’d expect more common newer ones will have v6 enabled. I’m using Centos 5 on my LV VPS and v6 is enabled and works. The one thing missing is v6 reverse DNS which is being worked on. I believe the same kernels are available in NY as in LV. I can’t conveniently check right now though.

  28. I’m really sorry that I have to come back with some additional comment to my first one here as I’m totally disappointed how AlienVPS deal with my issue. I don’t know who’s fault is this, but maybe the right person will read this comment and figure it out who the guilty person for this.

On Friday, 16th of December around 13:00 UTC time ( aprox. 7:00 AM EST U.S.) I made a purchase for a 4$ service from AlienVPS. Like I said on my previous comment everything run smooth and I have my VPS up. I started configuration for my needed services and in about 45 minutes a message pop-up that the machine is going down and I got a message that my transaction was marked as possibile fraud and I have to provide some documents.

No problem, I know the world we live in and I provide 4 documents:
    – passport ID
    – registration paper (I’m network consultant and currently live in another country than my citizenship)
    – my public profile
    – an Orange (mobile telephony provider, for those who don’t know it) bill that prove my current address
    – a screenshot from my PayPal account (from which the payment was made) showing the address.

I assume that it was more that enough to prove my identity. I did wait for some hours and since nothing happened I contact the support team over Live Chat. Three time over last 3 days. Every time they told me that the problem will be fixed and they will inform their manager. As you assume by my post nothing happened until now.

Now, I don’t know if it’s support team fault or manager, but I know that this is unacceptable. I work with customers (you can check my profile) in almost the same business, but I never promise something if I cannot deliver! I can understand that it may take time if there is a technical problem which you have to troubleshoot, but it take 5-10 minutes to check some damn papers! I know that a 4$ customer may not have the same expectations as 100 or 1000 or more customer. But if you cannot provide the service for 4$, then don’t sell it for 4$. Sell it for more. It is your business.

Also I read the ToS and I know that there is not refund and they can deny a customer their service. I don’t need the money back, if this is your idea. I just need an answer to my issue. If the papers are not enough or you are still having doubts about my identity then tell it, not just ignore my efforts. That’s just rude!

Thank you for reading this long comment!

Some of these Maxmind background checks are just plain stupid. For instance, there’s one company which insta-cancels your VPS order if you try to sign up from a VPS server (using a VPN). Some of these folks are really paranoid. Well, I took my money and signed up elsewhere. Having these checks in place more likely prevent business than they prevent fraud.

Manual activation always takes longer and it sucks to have these documents provided to someone you don’t know (personally, I’d never do that). So, just be a bit more patient, it’s weekend and they’ll probably activate your account on Monday.

      December 18, 2011 @ 2:49 pm | Reply
      • Hello,

I understand your point! It’s not about having or not access to the service that I already pay for it, but it’s about communication. If somebody from AlienVPS would take 5 minutes to reply to me with a statement that they can check if only on Monday, well…I would understand.

Second, this check triggered 30 minutes after I did the payment, most probably by the IP addresses that I use to access the VPS machine (I have multiple VPN and Internet exist points due to my profession). Now what, every time when I travel and I would need to access my machine I will be under surveillance I’ll have to prove my identity?

Hi Calin, I am the only one that can verify identity information and remove fraud alerts. It is my fault it has taken so long and I apologize for that. Once verified we will add a free month of service as a result of you extended wait.

As for our refund policy, in the event that a suspicious customer cannot sufficiently verify their identity we always refund the original payment made to us.

I am reviewing your docs now and will update you through your current ticket.

First of all thanks for your reply!

Second, thanks for your one month free offer, but really it’s not needed. I’m not a cheap guy and I know that you also have to pay for your contracted services. You need some stable customers that are willing to pay. I’m one of those customers, if the services are worth. Maybe it was a very bad coincidence what happened with my purchase. I signed up based on AlienVPS good reviews, that’s why I was so astonished that nobody replies to my issue.

I am a proud owner of Warp 8 for 24 hours now. It’s a lot better experience than it was setting up a deasoft US VPS(which is not bad at all for $6 I was paying for the last year and a half). And seems to be much more stable. Didn’t try any video streaming, as it’s not the intention of my machine. But so far so good. Here are my thoughts on the service:
    – Data transfer between servers using rsync and scp went flawlessly at full 100Mbps speeds.
    – Yum update went through without a hitch.
    – All yum repos and packages work fine.
    – All software I need is there and working.
    – The clock is correct (a big deal to me, since deasoft VPS had drifting clock problems).
    – CentOS 6 is way cooler than 5 ;-)

I don’t know much about uptime. But I hope it’ll be good.
And just to be clear, I am happy with deasoft as a service, but their offer at this moment is not as good value as AlienVPS one.

I’ve opened two tickets and both were handled with reasonable speed. One was a request for ipv6 addresses (took a day or so of back-and-forth) and the other was the host node running out of disk space (handled within minutes). I suppose it would have been better if the out-of-space condition had been spotted by automatic monitoring instead of by a user, but I can’t fault the response speed once I reported it. Details are on last month’s thread.

I would think so, sounds fishy, if they suspend a server the client should no matter what be provided a suspension notification, is it marked Suspended in your Client Area? If it is… then it should of provided you a WHMCS automation suspension e-mail notification unless they handle that option manually, which would be strange.

Yep, it’s marked suspended – no mail until yet. Reason is possible PayPal. They marked the payment in “Resolution Center” as “Inquiry by PayPal”. Status in PayPal is “Awaiting other party’s (seller) response” – Great response.

  51. I also got a Warp 4 VPS from them yesterday. It’s been very underwhelming so far:

    wget cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test -O /dev/null

Anybody know if I can get my money back if I cancel now?

  52. Please run your tests again, there were a few clients abusing node resources which have since been removed.

    • It’s now a little better:

      2012-01-03 23:08:42 (3.38 MB/s) – “/dev/null” saved [104857600/104857600]
      and
      1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 28.6762 s, 37.4 MB/s

but it’s still no where near the numbers the support team told me I would get. I also ran UnixBench and got these numbers:

8 CPUs in system; running 1 parallel copy of tests
      System Benchmarks Index Score 56.6

8 CPUs in system; running 8 parallel copies of tests
      System Benchmarks Index Score 228.2

These are the worst UnixBench scores I’ve seen in a VPS.

I think Russell’s heart is in the right place, he just needs to hire some help. Unfortunately I won’t be staying around to see it improve. Funny thing is that the only vps I’m not having any problems with cost $19/year.

Hi, I am a little confused about your issue. You are saying that you signed up with Alienlayer but trying to send your support issues to webrulon. These are two separate services each with their own helpdesks.

For Alienlayer client area please visit: https://my.alienlayer.com

For Webrulon client area please visit: https://my.webrulon.com

The correct support email for each site is support:at:webrulon.com and support:at:alienlayer.com

You may also email me directly at russell at webrulon

All emails and helpdesks are working fine.

If you can’t find it on their web site, chances are it doesn’t exist ;-). FWIW, I have two alien vps’s and I don’t think either one has had any unexpected actual downtime (one has been up for almost 4 months, the other about 1 month because I rebooted it myself at that time for some reason). But, both have had partial outages (network interruption several times, host node out of disk space on one occasion). Overall I’m pretty satisfied. I’m a little more LEB-aware now, but I found it astonishing at first that services this cheap could work at all.

Even if there’s an SLA, the usual compensation you’d get in case of a failure is some extra service, let’s say it’s a free extra month. Since that’s worth $4 in the most expensive plan I remember Alien offering here (my own two plans are $14/year and $24/year iirc), I don’t know if it would really make you feel any different. I think the lesson is to not use this type of service for anything critical. There are still plenty of other uses for them.

Like I said though, only been a few days. If everything remains as it has been, I may upgrade to a bigger package in LV and avoid NY like the plague.

Maybe its just me, but my alienvps works just fine. Im on NY6. I currently have 14 days uptime, and id say it reboots more than I’d like, but it cost me a dollar a month and the network is typically super fast for me. I wouldn’t use it for something mission critical, but I still love it as an extra shell.

I just ordered one of their 512M specials in NY yesterday and I can honestly say it’s been a POS from the start. A soon as it was provisioned ping times were all over the map from 30ms to over 2-3 secs., network speed was horrible and disk i/o was abysmal (around 900k). I opened a ticket and have gotten exactly ONE response from Russel saying “sorry for the problem, I uncapped your network, please try again”. I explained that net speed is NOT the only issue and sent results of the disk issue and explained about the MASSIVE packet loss. Then the server went completely dark for about 6 hrs. It’s back up now but STILL has latency and packet loss, as well as vps performance issues. Support is bordering on non-existant at this point. I don’t expect much for the money, but I DO expect the vps actually works and is at least SEMI-usable, and not totally suck ass. At this point I could never recommend using these guys for anything, as the vps is actually UNusable. It’s only $4, but $4 X = $$ for the owners either way so they need to provide SOME support and at least make sure shit works! All the signs on my vps point to SEVERE oversubscribing so hopefully this warning to STAY AWAY from alienvps will help save some others the same aggravation I, as well as many others here it seems, are experiencing.

@Damian Well, I try to be unbiased, as I have gone other places with inexpensive prices that didn’t get glowing reviews, but some people had no issues, so I gave them a chance and have been lucky I guess. Most have worked out and the ones that didn’t I dumped and went elsewhere. For my mission critical stuff I use higher end providers, however even on the low end boxes I have always at least gotten a RESPONSE from SOMEONE. In some cases the issue was fixed, if not, as I said, I went elsewhere. As an update for people, I sent 3 requests yesterday for an update, with NO response on the ticket whatsoever, and still nothing as of this morning. Nothing has changed on the vps either, so they haven’t worked on it and obviously don’t give 2 shits about their customers or their reputation. I was considering filing a dispute with Paypal but I don’t even think it’s worth my time for $4. Just add me to the long list of unhappy suckers they got money from. Kind of reminds me of when I got bent over by Hostfail last year. Same feeling. If we’re luck maybe AVPS will suffer the same fate as them.
