  4. Just a correction – if paying for 12 months, the additional discount is actually 20% not 10%

-1 Support is lacking; Multiple tickets about network problems; traffic blackholes, they did try and help for a start then just stop responding after a while. 6 month old tickets with no respond.

As rigel13 said, support is brutal. I was experiencing the “iptables service not started because of error (SVC_RUN_EXCEPT)” error in OpenVPN Access Server after enabling TUN/TAP. I opened a ticket with support (Ticket #35481) to try to resolve it and proceeded with some back and forth, I included a link to the fix (OpenVPN AS on OpenVZ http://bit.ly/1eiXWbR) in my ticket for the support staff but they didn’t even reply at that point. When I opened a ticket with Billing (Ticket #35982) to make them aware I was going to cancel if I couldn’t use OpenVPN AS their reply was “we provide an un-managed service – for £1.20 per month we cannot afford to have an engineer go digging into your configuration to identify what’s wrong.”

I hope others avoid BHost if they are hoping to use OpenVPN Access Server.

I have openvpn running on one of their vps’s (the 1.20 a month deal) and it’s been working fine for about a year I guess (I’d have to check the invoices). I didn’t use the AS though, just enabled tun\tap, installed it directly and configured iptables. I’m curious as to why it would work for me that way and not for AS which should be able to be installed by a kitten without any problems, perhaps it is just node configuration changing?
I do have some sympathy with their comment re the pricing, they can’t stay in business if they spend too much trouble shooting minor issues and after their costs there isn’t much left for any kind of support, that being said VPN’s are a decent chunk of business and it might benefit them to fix it, offer a prepackaged VPN image and make it a selling point (having a working with no effort vpn).

I believe it to be a node configuration issue that they didn’t want to address. I certainly agree that at that price point they can’t do a bunch of work for something, but they should be able to fix simple problems if they want to be able to retain customers. I’ve done many OpenVPN Access Server installs and the only other provider I had an issue with was HostSlim, same kind of trouble at the start, but they eventually figured it out.

      • Hi Cory. We do hesitate before providing custom changes / modules on our hostnodes as this can open a can of worms in terms of long term support, stability, etc. In this case, I’m sorry we were disappointing for you but our utmost priority is stable service for the majority of customers.

With one exception, every host that I’ve used supported OpenVPN Access Server out of the box (TUN/TAP had to be enabled), and when I asked that exception host, they configured my container so OpenVPN-AS would be supported. BHost is the only provider I’ve ever dealt with that has taken issue with OpenVPN Access Server. This was for a personal VPN and purely legitimate use, I don’t think this is honestly an issue of stability.
