BlueVM Communications LLC are based in Honolulu and are dedicated to offering “low cost, high quality Virtual Private Servers (VPS)”. We have featured BlueVM numerous times since early 2012 and reviews have been mainly positive. After they had enough of SolusVM after numerous security incidents, BlueVM decided to write their own panel. Feathur is the result of that. It’s already in use at BlueVM (and has been for a while) but it is now also available to the public. Their hardware primarily consists of Intel E3-1240 servers (@ 3.4GHz) with 32 GB of RAM and 4 x 1TB or 2TB hard drives in RAID10. A review of their service (which includes Feathur screenshots & serverbear link) can be found here.

BlueVM accept PayPal, Google Checkout and Bitcoin via Bitpay. Due to abuse of their previous refund policy, they no longer offer refunds on their services except in special cases. They provide a 99.99% uptime guarantee and provide service credits if they fail to meet this. According to their website, they undersell (typically they leave 500GB of HDD space free and 2-4GB of ram free). For more information, have a read of their Terms of Service.

  1. Just a quick note: We actually have a bitcoin payment processor (Bitpay) so payments via bitcoin are now automatic instead of manual.

      Right! Automated indeed!
Ordered KVM2 November Special offer more than 14 hours ago, and servers are still not up, apparently. Should’ve checked the complaints of people in this very same page. Sigh!

And these are the speeds you get from their Zurich VPS
        (freevps.us/downloads/bench.sh)

22 December: Download speed from i3d.net, Rotterdam, NL: 658KB/s
23 December: Download speed from i3d.net, Rotterdam, NL: 679KB/s
24 December: Download speed from i3d.net, Rotterdam, NL: 566KB/s

ALL of the test locations are under 1MB/s, apart from CacheFly and Coloat (Atlanta)
I already rented one of their Atlanta VPS, but if someone told me how their customer care was, I probably would have been very far away from their services.
        Their response?
1- “The tests are all pulling from locations ~3,000 miles from your VPS” (Zurich-Rotterdam is less than 370 miles, and again, for ALL the locations you get UNDER 1MBps)
2- “We do not offer refunds”

The moral is: you take it, you keep it. You are advised.

That would have been me :-) I use “Open Source” for free as in speech and as in beer software and “open source” for software which has its source openly available. I’ll edit the post to make this more clear.

      • E5-2620 and to be fair almost any CPU made in the last 10 years now is 64bit, this sort of thing should really be handled in a support ticket, they may simply need to pass through the CPU model to the guest rather than the default KVM QEMU CPU.

A 64bit OS is HIGHLY unlikely not to be supported.

another glitch, shutdown VPS in Feathur and boot. This makes VNC totally broken and unreachable.

        November 9, 2013 @ 8:12 am | Reply
    • ub3rst4r:

I had problems getting the network configured since DHCP doesn’t work and no gateway was configured. I tried the IP address of the VNC server (which is provided in Feathur) and that worked. I also have another BlueVM so that helped me figure it out. Here’s the configuration I used:

      IP Address: (your IP address)
      Gateway: (VNC server IP address)
Broadcast: (your IP address but with it ending in .255 instead)
      Net/subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Nameserver: 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 or 4.2.2.1 or 4.2.2.2 (your choice)

You may also have to edit the network configuration manually after installing the OS. After I installed CentOS, the network didn’t work so I had to modify the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with the settings above. I hope this information is correct and if not, maybe BlueVM can clarify it?

      • ub3rst4r:

After doing some pings, I kept getting this:

        Redirect Host(New nexthop: x.x.x.x)

I guess that means there’s a more direct route to the host (aka the gateway is wrong). So, I changed the gateway to what x.x.x.x was and that went away. I wish BlueVM either fixed the DHCP or sent details on configuring the network for the VPS when you sign up.

It almost kills me to see how many negative comments there are about BlueVM, despite the fact that i’ve honestly never had any real issues with this company. In fact, aside from maybe one minor network hiccup, I’ve never had issues with this company. They are extremely accommodating and quite easy to work with. If you haven’t at least tried BlueVM out, I recommend that you do. They have a no refund policy, but I honestly doubt that you’ll be disappointed…

I have had a blueVM VM for a little over two months, and have not been able to use it yet. I have been *super* patient (this is the first time I have said anything publicly), but they don’t even appear to read their trouble tickets (when they respond, the responses ignore what I wrote in the ticket; also, get used to getting automated responses about how sorry they are your ticket has not been answered in days, and how valuable you are as a customer, and then… nothing).

Glad you are not stuck in the same hell as me. The host my VM was provisioned on would not stay up for more than a week, and a few days uptime was most common. So, they re-provisioned me to a new host. Now, the uptime is measured in minutes. Different issue now, but minutes to hours after starting the VM (linux live CD or installed Linux), feathur shows the VM as powered off.

It is the few positive comments about BlueVM like yours that keep me hopeful that *eventually* I will be able to use the VM. If things change, and they finally get things sorted, I will update this post.

You’ll have to spend much more than $18 to get decent service. E.g. Ramnode, Linode, Digital Ocean, BuyVM etc.

I traded in my BlueVM OpenVZ VPS in Zurich (from the late August offer) for the KVM3 offer in Zurich. I opened a ticket requesting the change. As soon as I paid the invoice for the upgrade, the new KVM VPS was ready for me. The Feathur interface for KVM is easy to use and similar to the OpenVZ interface. You must provide your own VNC client. Remember to change the account(s) password(s) on your VPS via SSH and your VNC password in Feathur after you have completed OS installation.

OS installation and setup was easy. BlueVM offers a wide assortment of OSs to choose from – various versions of Linux, BSD, Windows, and others I did not recognize. (I do not know how the Windows versions are licensed, but I presume you must provide your own license code.) I installed Debian 7. Performance is good.

I have been with BlueVM for over a year now. For cheap VPS’ they are good. They don’t mind giving you the best available deal if you ask.

As many of you are noticing, their support isn’t that good. My VPS was down for close to a week during the recent Feathur migration, and their ticket response always took at least a day just to hear “forwarding this to…” which then took another day or two. Support when they run sales (i.e. now) is horrible, don’t expect quick responses while this is ongoing. They also have a bunch of hanger-ons on IRC who give horrible advice just to have something to say.

That being said, when they’re not having issues the servers are as solid. I have had very little random downtime with them. Downtime should be expected, but don’t expect rapid responses when it happens.

    • We had a few issues with Cloudflare, but our site no longer uses it for cache so this should be fixed. As for your KVM in Buffalo if you’re having any issues please open a ticket we’ll gladly take a look.

My Zurich KVM VPS was unreachable for hours yesterday and again today (and still is).
The support ticket is, despite several requests, still unanswered.

I moved from another provider to BlueVM, because I though BlueVM was a good, reliable provider.
For now I am regretting this move.

I have been a customer for about a week now. I really can’t believe they have made such a nice product available at such a low price as the KVM3 plan. I have spent time in their IRC channel, and I am very impressed with their service. I have had nothing but great service from the staff. They continually make improvements to the system, many times based on customer suggestions. The owner has been willing to bend over backwards to make customers happy, and field tickets himself. I was so happy with my service, and the price was so nice, I added another KVM3. I didn’t really need it, but what the heck!

  76. I am interested on November KVM2 on Zurich. The order link provided(https://www.bluevm.com/cart.php?gid=42) doesn’t have that deal.

I bought into this deal — only to find some other VPS is using the IP they assigned me. DHCP won’t work because it can tell the IP is already in use. The problem’s been going on for twelve hours now, with no reply from support. Their live chat is a public room absolutely full of people with various network problems, and you get banned for asking about your ticket.

Oh well. Looked good on paper. They don’t offer refunds, so there’s money down the drain.

    Hello,

I have a problem with the IP adress too, DHCP is not working and the VM(Windows 7 image) is disconnected from network. Such VPS is now useless for me. Ticket opened, will see :)

Can’t politely express how unhappy with I am with BlueVM right now.

They are developing their new web control panel, called Feathur. It has serious, severe bugs. As in, doesn’t work right at all with Firefox for me, fails in less bad with Chrome.

With a couple of days’ notice, they just force-migrated my old KVM VPS to this new control panel, forced power-off and all. And now the thing won’t power up through their “Feathur” through Firefox or Chrome. Well, the control panel says green, but not working nor VNC access. And http://www.bluevm.com is down AGAIN, so can’t even submit a support ticket.

BlueVM has really failed me. Very disappointed.

I also have problems with them. I try to reinstall my VPS(KVM), but the VPN is not working, so I ended up with a dead VPS, I cannot run the installation that has started, and the machine is not booting anymore.I opened a ticket 3 days ago, is not solved until now

Just purchased their KVM3 special. Every night my host has been shut down for unknown reasons. Service ticket has been opened but no response. Went as far as reinstalling the base OS in case it was a OS issue. Same results – shut down every day. Still no response from support.

yeah, i was getting this as well, reboot every night, stopping my services. So I decided to just reformat and reinstall, big mistake, now the KVM won’t even start. Feather sucks, i like SolusVM better (minus the exploit). BlueVM support is slow, still waiting for response to ticket, never had a problem with Nick at Ramnode.

  82. I think will open DISPUTE on Paypal. 1 day after purchased, down for more than 1 day. Then up but the network suck. Can not open from Indonesia. I can access it from my other USA VPS from servermania. And I also can access it from my Dedicated Server in Indonesia. But nothing from home or my office. More than 2 weeks. Very-very poor network. Data center mean can be accessed from all of the world. My VPS IP is 23.94.26.100. Please check it.

I’m a new customer to BlueVM. I’ve purchased some BLUE0.5 VPSs and, for my purposes, they are performing well so far.

The Feathur interface is quite nice, although I’ve noticed some minor bugs.

My problem is no connection tracking is enabled on the some of the BLUE0.5 VPSs, which makes securing the VPS difficult. My Chicago VPS was fixed a day after a ticket was raised. No response to the ticket for my LA VPS after 4 days.

my BlueVM KVM has been down for over 24 hours. Feather is not starting my VM. I have submitted a ticket and still waiting for a response for BlueVM support over 24 hours later. Support is a lot to be desired with BlueVM.

Trying my luck, that this comment will be read by BlueVM and contact me.

I’ve had a bad experience with BlueVM in their Buffalo location. There has been frequent downtime on various nodes, and more frequent packet loss. Still, can’t complain for the price I guess.

Awful service, your vps can be down for weeks and they won’t answer your ticket, servers are slow and I had in the last 30 days an uptime of 61% ….

    Don’t purchase anything from them
