It’s easy to get a VPS in Silicon Valley, Western Europe, or East Asia. But what if you want something a little more exotic?
The term “exotic” here means “not a usual place”. The holy grail would be something like the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (aka North Korea), or perhaps Vatican City (not a lot of datacenters there). We can’t help you there, but we can suggest some really out-of-the-way places where you can get a VM.
For example, uou can a 1GB VPS with 10GB of disk and a 100mbps per link in Turkmenistan from Turkmen Telekom. Note that the 100mbps is only within Turkmenistan – it’s 10mbps to the rest of the world. This system will cost you 150,000 Manat per month, which works out to about $43 USD. Ouch. By the way, Turkmenistan is one of the most bizarre dictatorships in the world.
How about Uruguay? Nestled amid river basins in South America, this small country is home to Hosting Enlaweb. Their cheapest offer is for a 2 vcpu/4GB RAM system with 100GB of SSD disk and 300GB of bandwidth, on either Linux or Windows. This is VmWare-based and their datacenter is in Uruguay. How much? $37/month.
Our next company doesn’t even list prices. Brac Informatics is based in the Cayman Islands, one of the world’s notorious offshore financial centers. Brac says they have “redundant offshore data centres on two different islands located nearly 100 miles apart.” Not surprisingly, their web site talks a lot about “the importance of data sovereignty” and emphasizes that their datacenters are “all within the Cayman Islands legal jurisdiction”. If you need this service, you can afford it.
Finally, let’s go to the roof of the world and check out hosting in Nepal. AccessWorld offers a Cloud VPS, naturally – I mean, the whole country is in the clouds. For 1GB RAM and 20GB disk, you’ll need to pony up $22.87/month. Pricey and no details on bandwidth, but they suggest you contact them for a quote. By the way, they’re also hiring.
Still looking for a Pyongyang listing.

An alternative to actually having a VPS in Pyongyang is to get a cheap VPS anywhere, hop on Amazon or Alibaba, and get some really nifty “smart” IoT devices, create a VPN to your VPS and setup your IoT devices with open access to that VPN. And voila! You’ll likely have all the “benefits” of a Pyongyang VPS, but on a LEB budget! You may also get sub-benefits (at no extra charge) like “connectivity” to other interesting places on earth, such as Bejing, Islamabad, and Tehran!
