KVM is released in a limited quantity but OpenVZ (except the yearly plans) tend to stay much longer. The node’s hardware in New York is made up of E5 2630L’s, 64GB RAM, 8 x 1.5TB SATA 3 drives and a 128GB Samsung read cache.
There is no difference in price between the two available locations. Right now, the backup VPS is not available for New York location. DDOS filtering is also ‘in the works’ for New York location. I must point out that not all packages meet the LEB Criteria (of course price wise) but its worth mentioning.
Freebies includes 5GB of free backup space and DNS hosting under their BuyVM+ product. They also offer “Offloaded MySQL” add-on for a small fee of $1.00/month.
Stock is released at 01pm GMT-7 and 04am GMT-7 to cater for different customers in different timezones. To view the stock availability for each location, use the handy tool DoesBuyVMhaveStock.com (dont ignore the tabs for location on top of the page).
Supported payment method is PayPal and Credit Card. There have been some bumps in past but they have mostly positive reviews and a large fan base. You can find a detailed review of 128MB OpenVZ yearly at 96MB along with an extensive review of their KVM product line (part 1 and part 2). They have had an awesome tl;dr version of AUP and TOS but I cannot seem to find it since they moved to another wiki.

May I request/suggest that you put the server time on http://www.doesbuyvmhavestock.com/. It seems as though the “Last update” time is quite a few minutes in the future of all ntp times.
I may have misunderstood what the “Last update” column is. But it still may be useful for others to have server time when we are looking for 1pm and 4am :) My refresh finger gets tired!

We’re not going to always be ordering nodes, no.
we have enough nodes that I figure with cancellations we can keep fresh people coming in.
Now that Buffalo is online we’re loading up SJ.
The next batch of nodes we do will be purely KVM as I think we have enough OpenVZ :P
I got a few outstanding OpenVZ projects though, namely:
– bumping storage & BW available on 512MB/1G/2G plans
– getting a 2.6.32 kernel tested and out the door.

When is the KVM stock coming up? I don’t mind running on OpenVZ but I definitely need Ubuntu 12.04 with its kernel.
Just loaded up a bit of KVM.
We delayed purchasing some new nodes as we did some audits and found we had way too many development/internal nodes and that with some consolidating we could just reuse the nodes :)
We’ll have something like 4 – 5 full KVM nodes freed up fully between both locations within the next couple weeks.

Just signed up for a 256 Mb OpenVZ in SJ. I plan to move my personal site from godaddy hosting if i like what i see. Pretty excited! I will report on my experience, but the comments read so far make me hopeful.

Probably a skid flooding the filtering range and it’s affecting the whole /24.

At this point it isn’t even the awknet side that’s crapping out, it’s just our SJ side not taking kindly to the floods while things take a few to filter. I’m testing out a brocade tonight on a part of our network so we’ll see where that puts us.

I tried to buy a KVM 256 in San Jose just now.
I tried for 3 times. Everytime I just got my account deleted and had to register a new one.
It always says”MaxMind has deemed your order to be potentially high risk.”
I open tickets 3 times and didn’t get any response. Your staff keep deleting my accounts.
Maybe I have to choose other VPS service. Hope to get your response ASAP.

Can someone post some traceroutes from BuyVM Buffalo location out to some various sites based in the United States?
Interested in seeing the route the traffic goes typically and upstream providers.
Is traffic backhauling often through say Chicago? How is peering and distribution of traffic from Buffalo (i.e. is there any peer exchanges in the Buffalo mix? Is traffic mainly just one bulk transit provider?)
Alas that’s how Level3 is for now :(

Does BuyVM have a Looking Glass or similar tool you can point me to so I can self check the routes? Need something US Northeast, without the often seen Chicago-centric backhauling we see too much with other providers.
I expect Buffalo traffic to go direct to NYC, Toronto, etc. instead of slop-longhaul routing :)

I’m assuming it was a shorter distance for them to backhaul to Chicago than it was to backhaul from NY.
I do know that there has to be some transit to NY directly since some people in NYU get ~8ms to Buffalo.

I’ve got a price out on a nice brocade setup at ~$10k. Brocade CER2024’s aren’t cheap but they’re pretty well built so we’ll see.
I’ll be getting the test lab At the start of November when we’re back from Vegas.
I’m not happy at all about it since i’m fairly sure my force10’s & new router aren’t the problem, but they won’t ‘waste their time debugging’ until I replace it all.

Brocade makes great gear. But it comes with the sticker shock. All that routing and switching gear would go a far way toward more nodes and storage VPS’es instead. Comes with the biz though.

Nah I apologize that you’re having the issues. We’re working at it but I don’t want to be replacing the network this close to the company vacation. It’s my #1 priority to address and the #1 complaint we have about our SJ location.

Just wanted to give folks one more positive reason to try BuyVM.
If you order a monthly service say today, your first month is pro-rated. Meaning on some plans, our cash outlay is under $2 to test their services.

Just starting with their Buffalo VPS.
The network is actually very good so far. < 90ms typically from London. Great from other locations in the United States (latency, ping and routes).
Speed is good too. Able to pull 45M/s from one of gig servers in Kansas City.
Network seems to be heavily Telia. No complaints there. Better than most haul providers (so far).
Network indeed appears to heavily traffic through New York City.
This VPS is a speed demon. 2 cores on the VPS: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630L 0 @ 2.00GHz. Speed part is actually getting to use the CPU compared to waiting in queue elsewhere.
Real impressed with the Buffalo location.
Speeds are phenomenal in Buffalo.
Just about done with our routine pre-setup testing. Passed with impressive flying colors. Excited to get Buffalo into production!

I’ve only caught one Chicago-centric routing snafu in Buffalo. Most traffic heads to NYC instead, which is preferred by me.
Routes to regional Canadian cities like Toronto and Montreal is via NYC and around 18ms.
Some regional US cities near to Buffalo will see routing out to NYC then DC then out to local destination. It’s a bunch of go around and out of the way routing. See that when handoff is done to Level3 and Cogent (traffic is going out from this facility via Telia).
Great deal here in Buffalo folks. Meets our own requirements for contingency planning and moving assets to less volatile and likely to be impacted places, while still having low latency. Buffalo is a city, but less likely to experience say a big blackout or hurricane remnants.
We’re actually in the middle of getting our local mirror server setup in NY as well ;)

Does the KVM support swap memory and tun/tap vpn ?
Can I create the capacity of swap memory by my own ?
You can set your own swap but if you abuse it you’ll get suspended.
Rule of thumb is usually do 1x your memory to be safe.
If you go get a 256MB plan and setup a 4GB swap and hammer the drives? You’ll likely be asked to leave.
