ClubUptime - $17.85/6 Months 512MB OpenVZ VPS New Year Special

Updated August 2011 — ClubUptime is officially in the dead pool. IP has not been resolving since 3 August. Please see discussion thread at LowEndTalk.

ClubUptime Matt from ClubUptime emailed me about their New Year special, which is only going to be valid for 1 day. Use promo code NewYears2011 to get 50% off recurring discount on VPS plans when you purchase with 6 months or 1 year billing period. Their Budget VPS Level 1 now costs $17.85/6 months (~$2.98/month) with the following spec:

  • 512MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 100GB/month data transfer
  • 1x IPv4 + 5x IPv6 addresses
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

You get to choose between Dallas TX or Seattle WA for your server location. I think the amount of included data might put people off, even though 100GB/month would be sufficient to run a few small blogs. According to this comment from previous post, extra data is also available at $0.25/GB or $100/TB. Update: Also via this WHT offer, where you can find the testing IP for both their Dallas and Seattle nodes.

… and Happy New Year everyone!

I’ve ordered around 5 OVZs in the past 2 months and they all have really bad bursts of IO lag. I’m talking about typing things in my shell and then a sudden pause for 5 seconds with nothing else running. I’ve never had this problem with Xen, but I’ve only had 3 different providers.

Does OpenVZ have a bad IO scheduler, or does it just tend to be oversold?

          January 1, 2011 @ 8:19 pm | Reply
        • It’s not a poor IO Scheduler. In fact, Disk I/O is much more favorable on OpenVZ as a much less amount of data is being written to/from disk overall. Disk I/O issues such as that are caused by the overselling and the degree of overselling — not a poor I/O scheduler.

Unfortunately, most companies doing Budget VPS’s tend to oversell to a very large degree and that causes I/O problems. We’re capable of keeping our prices low due to our managed plans offsetting the costs of the hardware powerful enough to handle the accounts. We do what it takes to keep clients happy and online. Calling ourselves “Club Uptime” and not having an acceptable uptime rating just wouldn’t be fitting :)

@bob: In theory, the performance of a properly managed OpenVZ node is better than that of Xen, but the security suffers as even the official OpenVZ documentation recommends to disable SELinux (sic!). With Xen I have predictable performance, isolation, freedom and better security – what is important to me. I do not have nerves to play ticket ping-pong with admins asking for tun/tap, firewall modules or this and that. Moreover, I DO need SELinux.

Clubuptime are a first class VPS provider although I am a bit worried now, after they have changed their support software, I see this

If the issues submitted are a direct result of client actions, you agree that we may impose a $15 administrative fee to correct any issues that arise of which take longer than 15 minutes to fix.”

Also there are a lot of fields to input just to get a ticket sent, it all takes too much time.

But they have great uptime and speeds, I/O etc
        dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
        16384+0 records in
        16384+0 records out
        1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 8.81654 seconds, 122 MB/s

I am surpised at enscloud being so poor, I was going to get one from them.

        • As noted previously, that will only be charged if you would like us to perform the tasks we suggest on your behalf.

We’ll still tell you what’s wrong in most cases, and we’ve yet to impose the $15 charge. In addition, it does not apply to Managed accounts.

@Harbinger Thanks for pointing this out.
And about eNSCloud, they have lots of issues in their Chicago-DC-Two. San Jose might be good, LEA has one there with good I/O. I have a ticket open with them for last 16 days, sent repeated reminders but nothing worked.
eNSCloud started well but failing now. On front-page they are saying that they “refuse to oversell”. But probably now they are low on resources.

I am using vCentre windows client (not the web-based one). I have found swapped memory and shared memory across VMs. That is a sign of oversell/low-RAM because VMware only share pages if it is out of RAM. The RAM is not get as “Reserved”, you can get swapped any time.

But from CPU and network and uptime point of view they are quite great. But disk I/O less than 3MB/s is a serious bottleneck. Swapping RAM with this I/O kills the VM.

Support turnaround has degraded heavily in last few months.

From my side I would flag eNSCloud as “Risky”.

@Matthew Thanks for clarification. I have some question on your IPv6 service.
          1. ping6 ipv6.google.com -> dns gets resolved, but ping fails
          2. Your IPv6 addresses are /0 addresses. Quite unusual. There is 6.67 * 10^27 IPv6 addresses per square meter on our planet. So usually people get /32 or /64 IPv6 addresses per connection – but not in your case. Anyway as of now I am not using IPv6 so OK for me.

@ClubUptime – “You made an offer that I could not refuse.”

      January 1, 2011 @ 4:26 pm | Reply
      • That’s correct that we issue them as /128 (not /0). SolusVM handles IP address assignments in /128 blocks. We do have numerous /64 ranges (One per Softlayer VLAN). We assign IP’s as needed rather than assigning them as blocks of about 4 quintillion IP’s. It helps us track and manage traffic/bandwidth more efficiently.

MY VPS is offline, since I got it, and it is not responding to Boot requests from control panel..
I tried to submit a ticket, but got redirected to a new page where, where there is a lot of information to fill in.. Some of it I even don’t know what is it, like “Client ID Number”, could it be a user name?
Also you have to agree for this:
“If the issues submitted are a direct result of client actions, you agree that we may impose a $15 administrative fee to correct any issues that arise of which take longer than 15 minutes to fix.”

This statement makes me afraid of what is coming.. they should have an option to come back to the client and tell him that this issue required a $15, then it is up to the client..

    January 1, 2011 @ 7:11 pm | Reply
    • In most cases, this happens due to very complex passwords used during checkout. SolusVM doesn’t handle complex passwords very well and tends not to properly roll out network configurations making your VPS seem to be offline. I also see that you opened a ticket with us about 5 minutes ago or so.

There’s no need to be worried about the administrative fee — We’ve yet to charge that to *anyone*. It’s more of a deterrent than anything as we’ve had several abusive users come into our helpdesk as of recently. If your plan isn’t managed, our support is much more limited than if you have a managed plan. It’s as simple as that. Generally, the $15 will only apply if you severely mess something up and it’ll take us hours to fix it if you’re unable to.

      • It’s Locall HDD in Raid 10. However, because they didn’t use the “conv=fdatasync” flags on the dd test, it’s not a valid test as this test includes cache time. Actual performance is generally between 100-120MB/s depending on the node. Our newer nodes that we rolled out for this sale have been seeing 200MB/s so far.

A good provider at first glance but simply does not respect their own promises and does not meet my needs.
Their IPv6 don’t work at all. IPv6 routing never worked throughout my using their service thus can’t even ping or get ping from other than local. Matthew kept telling me that SoftLayer is dealing with this problem and will fixed it “later today” or “soon”. It’s a week now and I decided that I cancel the service.
Waiting to see if I can get any refund. Although their money back guarantee is 3 days, however Matthew kept telling me it will work shortly for the past week, thus I believe I still deserve a full refund.

    January 7, 2011 @ 2:56 am | Reply
    • Well. The VPS that hosts this blog is provided by QuickWeb inside Softlayer as well. I too have the same problem — IPv6 routing would work for about an hour after reboot and then stops routing soon afterwards.

I guess it is something that’s beyond ClubUptime’s ability to do. I won’t comment on whether you deserve refund or not, but you know their terms of use. If all you care about is IPv6, I think BuyVM’s offer in HE.net Fremont would be the best one for now.

      January 7, 2011 @ 3:42 am | Reply
    • As mentioned within the (several) tickets that have been opened by yourself, we have been working diligently with Softlayer and SolusVM to get the IPv6 issues squared away. Unfortunately, Softlayer has a very unique network configuration from other facilities that’s known to cause issues as they use Layer 3 switching right up to the servers themselves and all servers carry public traffic over either eth1, eth3, or bond1 depending on the facility and the type of hardware. IPv6 was functioning for quite some time until it decided to cease to function on all servers at the exact same time and we’re trying to figure out what changed. SolusVM Claims it wasn’t them, Softlayer claims it wasn’t them. With no one claiming any level of responsibility that breaks IPv6 on 50+ nodes at once, it certainly makes getting it fixed significantly harder. Once corrected, everyone will get a mass email letting them know. Until then, everyone needs to sit tight.

Luckily, IPv6 is not yet mainstream and is far from a requirement for the internet to operate Had this happened six months down the line rather than right now, things might be different.

Due to special pricing on my local network, an ipv6 vps would be necessary for me and for my user group. And that’s why I kept on urging IPv6 to work and looking for native IPv6 vps here on LEB.
Anyway, it’s $5 after all and I won’t spend much time so as to get that back. But you did highlight that you have ipv6. However as I’ve mentioned in that ticket, it’s your call if I should get refund. If you decide I shouldn’t get it, that’s OK. But you didn’t say yes/no at all.
BTW, you seem to be fast replying comments here compared to frequently not replying tickets. That’s weird actually. In one case, I asked for TUN/TAP and you opened it without notifying me. And in another case, I noticed live chat is online soon after submitted a ticket and asked about the same thing as described in the ticket. Andrew told me that he had seen the ticket and have contacted people that will work on this. But why you simply don’t reply?

To LEA, I did noticed Fremont recently. And along with Seattle, that’s the most ideal location for me. But NordicVPS told me that theirs are not working now. I’ll try BuyVM. Thank you!

Simply put, I’m not the only member of management within the company that’s capable of handling situations. It might be 51% my company, but I do trust my staff and other executives to do their job so that I sleep and be with my family, which are very important things in life.

I’m sorry, Matt. In the previous comment, by “you”, I meant “your company”.
If you go and see my tickets, you’ll find that tickets were not replied although already been handled. For example, TUN/TAP, I don’t know you have opened it until you told me in Live Chat. Yes, it would be easy to find out if I tested it. But wouldn’t it reasonable for me to think that no action was ever taken as I didn’t see any reply to that ticket?
I’m not saying that your company are not responsive. Actually, you are, as Peter said! I chose you because the IPv6 you said you had and based on quite a few good reviews. If it’s not the ipv6 problem, I would still be using your service and it’s satisfactory overall even considering the ipv6 problem still to be solved. I just wonder why your company don’t reply when you have already handled the ticket.
IPv6 simply is necessary for me. Otherwise, I definitely won’t choose leaving.

As Matt mentioned, and so did LEA mentioned, SoftLayer are having IPV6 issues, so don’t blame ClubUptime. It may be due to the FACT that MANY SoftLayer lines are currently coming through backup lines currently, due to an outage a week ago that saw many of their routers fuck up, causing their connectivity to AT&T and a major part of Europe severely disrupted.

If one of us enabled TUN/TAP for you and forgot to reply to your ticket, I apologise for us not having updated your ticket. In terms of the IPv6, I can only reiterate the comments the other posters have made here that it’s beyond our control. We’re as frustrated with the issues as you are and as soon as they’re solved, we’ll let everyone know.

Personally – I’ve found Clubuptime to be responsive to a problem I had with setup and a couple of requests (TUN/TAP being one of them) that I threw at them. For their pricing (and even for more expensive pricing than they charge) – I’ve found their support and availability very good.

I had 1 occasion to use live chat for a support problem – and the issue was dealt with instantly.

Nevertheless, I suspect that Matt (like many of us as well!) – tends to monitor the forums and sites like this even on his off hours.

We should probably cut Matt some slack – I think it’s fine to give honest feedback in a public forum like this; but honestly I don’t expect him to drop everything and fix a problem because of a comment posting.

I wrote a ticket with Upper Case and this was a huge mistake, which I didn’t know.
Writing with upper case was so offensive to Matt that I received a message within like 5 seconds.
I apologize my writing with Upper case, if it was so offensive, again I apologize.

Are coupon codes here and on WHT one per client, or can we order as many as we want with the codes?

    • In most cases, it’s once per clients. However, there are a few codes that have allowed multiple purchases. We’re flexible — drop us a message at sales@ and we’ll see what we can work out regardless :)

    • You agreed to our terms of use which specifically say that there is a 3 day money back guarantee, with any refund given after that being pro-rated and discretional. As a lenient application of section 2 paragraph 7, we politely asked you to switch to another provider and allowed you until the end of your billing period to migrate. We cannot and will not tolerate abuse toward our staff.

ok this is my review about CLUB UPTIME.

I paid 40.30$ by 6 month in VPS level 2
cost 10$ by month but I got a discount of 25%

after a month issue start to appears and I see they do not
have a part in the plans page who say “1 CORE BY CLIENT”
that is the problem of my vps.. I got a gameserver for test
I told Matthew about that and he told me is ok if do not get
    cpu hungry..

well my app do not work propery with 1 core, but in any place say “1 CORE BY CLIENT” that tell me Andy in chat a restriction of CPU by 1 CORE by 2.93ghz

Ok I used 1 month only (12/30/2010) since today (1/30/2011) .. normal price 10$ well he ask me a refund a 20$ only because I’m in the second month and server management and move to another node.. I say him is unmanagement and you move me to another node to see if fix my problem. when I open the console with putty I saw the speed is very slow.. he check it and told me I can only refund you 20$ take or not. you decide.. ok I claim about why only 20$ if I’m in the firts month.. he told me in he system I’m into the 2 month..

I did not use. and he do not want give me the refund after discute the issue in the best way, I only want my app work.

after close the chat maded by Andy.. I send a message tell him I want my refund. I better have a money back and run a bad vps company support.
