LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

HostLatch - $5 OpenVZ VPS with 40GB Disk Space

Updated March 2010: HostLatch has been purchased by GigeVPS and is now redirecting there.

HostLatch Via this WHT offer. Another (but a bit different) offer from HostLatch! For $5/month, you get:

  • 256MB guaranteed/384MB burstable memory
  • 40GB storage
  • 120GB/month data transfer
  • 1 IP address

Server in Seattle WA or Dallas TX. You need to specify which DC you would like the server to be when you sign up, otherwise it would be randomly allocated.

I guess the thing I would like to point out is the amount of storage you get — 40GBs, which makes it a cheap option as a backup server. I know OpenVZ lets you oversell your storage space so you’ll probably run into trouble if everyone decided to buy them for backups.

They also have funny pricing scheme. Blowout Sale #1 for example. $9.95/month. Or $25/3 months. Or $55/6 months. Or $115/12 months. It just does not add up nor encouraging subscribers to opt for the longest subscription. Or maybe someone’s math is just bad.

signed up for (Blowout Sale #2)1G RAM/month and paid for 3month. Payment was confirmed form my credit card transaction and thier transaction. I have provided my name, home address and phone# was included in signed up. But hostlatch refused to setup my vps account.
His giving reason was my name and my email was not the same???? (e.g: because my name was “SO and So” and my email was nono@gmail.com.). Asking me front and back copy of my credit card (what?). I said noway. Due to that he think I have Fraud intention. Am I missing something here?

I have Asked for the refund and am waiting to be credit back to my credit card.

By the way I found buget vps “dmehosting.com” and signed up with them without any problem. Dmehosting set me up quick and Now my vps is up and running.

I signed up for a 256MB HostLatch account on July 23rd, requesting the Dallas datacenter. This was my last hope that an OpenVZ server could meet my “utility” server needs. Due to the way I utilize VPS servers, I need Xen virtualization – so this provider didn’t work out for me. However, I have nothing bad to say about HostLatch. I understood from the beginning that this is a small, one or two man shop. With that in mind, service was great. My VPS was provisioned and I received login details within 50 minutes of paying by Paypal. My one support ticket, a rDNS request, was completed within a hour and a half. Network and server performance were good. I have no complaints.

Innya, forgive my directness, but YES, you are “missing something here”. A VPS provider requiring you to sent a copy of your license and/or CC is not out of the ordinary if something looks perhaps a bit suspicious. In fact, I have more respect for this company for doing so. The low cost, relatively high performance, and high availability of VPS offerings make them highly sought after by hackers, spammers, and other ne’er-do-wells. Caution on the part of the Host is prudent and necessary. Getting upset and bad-mouthing the host is the same behaviour an 18yr old might exhibit when confronted about their fake ID at the bar.

  4. Hi Kprice,
Just order on them at Seattle data center, but it look likes many trouble there. My account get provisioned and down in the same day. Maybe I’ll ask them to move my account to Dallas if you say good uptime over there.

Accout setup took 13 hours (which I think is good). I did find a minor issue with the user account area and Notified Adam via email, which was promptly corrected. VPS speed and bandwidth seems good so far (although I’ve had the server less than 24hours). I realise this is probably a one or two man show, but I can live with that for the price. Please note: I’m actually using the $10 Back to school sale promo so technically it does not fit into the “low end box” requirements. There are some negative posts about this Admin on other forums, how ever I will see how it goes for myself and update low end box users down the track a little further.

Hey Bevan Williamson, is your VPS located at the Seattle WA data center or the Dallas TX one? If its the Seattle WA one could you please post the IP address of your VPS? It doesn’t have to be the exact IP, but maybe you could do something like 192.168.1.*** I am really interested in finding a cheap VPS with a good latency to where I live. Thanks

Clingy, My vps is located in Dallas, vps2.buffsworld.com points to the IP. I’m in Australia so it doesn’t make much difference for me. How ever the USA West Coast Data centre’s are slightly better for me.

I don’t recommend you to use their Seattle DC, there’s many trouble there. Last night my VPS down for more than 8 hours and there’s no disk info in HyperVM. Maybe the Dallas is better, I didn’t hear any trouble in their Dallas DC. Unfortunatelly, they charge USD5 to switch from Seattle to Dallas and I refused, because I don’t even can use my VPS in Seattle with this many down time.

    Hasanul,
I’ve experienced that type of issue before with other HyperVM powered OpenVZ servers. If I rebooted the server from an SSH session, it would never come back online. The HyperVM control panel wouldn’t show disk or memory usage correctly, and the “reboot” function wouldn’t work. I’d have to use the “shutdown” option, wait ~15 minutes, then “turn on”. The only way to avoid this mess was to use HyperVM to control the rebooting of the server. Not sure if this could be your issue, but thought I’d share, regardless.

  11. Hello kprice,
No, my trouble wan’t like that. I rebooted from the HyperVM once I got alert from my web monitoring, but, got red error about the failure. I forgot what the HyperVM say, but there’s no disk either. But it come back normal after I send ticket to them. As for support, HostLatch is good, there’s only a minute wait for a ticket I submitted :)

  12. Hi kprice,
No, my problem wasn’t like that. When I try to rebooted by HyperVM, I’ve got red error warning about disk bla-bla-bla.. /openvz/something (I forgot). But, it comes normal after I send ticket to support. For support, I think HostLatch good, got reply under a minute for every message.

    Hey guys,
    Happy labor day! :)
The unstable server has been moved to a new server, and if you were there, you should have gotten an email with the new hypervm login URL and your new VPS IP. All VPS’s are stable now and we apologize for all the inconvenience caused.
