LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

IdeaStack - $6 200MB OpenVZ VPS

IdeaStack Via this WHT offer. IdeaStack, whom labelled itself as “India Web Hosting”, has some holidays special — 33% off recurring discount with coupon code HOLIDAYS. That cuts their “Silver” page to $6/month (well, actually $6.03/month at checkout). You get

  • 200MB guaranteed/300MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 80GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ

No idea where the servers are. Their website is hosted with WebNX in Los Angeles. Can’t even resolve the IP addresses of their name servers (n1-3.ideastack.com), although from the glue records, they probably belong to the same physical box (FAIL!). Domain has been registered since 2005, although not much review can be found. It’s owned by a software engineer in India so I guess it would be better than teenagers making extra cash during holidays.

Update: As per comment from IdeaStack, their servers are with Limestone Networks (Dallas TX) and Burst (Scranton PA).

  1. Gotta admit that I’m looking at the MX records myself for the domain. Looks like they forward to gmail.com or whatever that service from Google is. (I forget it’s name.)

The glue not being set is also an issue with me. Looks like it’s supposed to be using nameservers from verygoodserver.com which is a blank page. Hmmm….

I have used for a month only. They setup wrong spec for the VPS I ordered and never fixed it before I switch to another provider.

Well, they still not get this fixed. Just check the link on WHT talk at the beginning of this post. and http://ideastack.com/vps.html and you will see the in-consistency of spec.

I was ordered the gold plan by the way.

  4. @JC — yes I have noticed that as well, as it says 256MB on the WHT offer page, but only 200MB in the order page.

    I guess that’s another +1 for dodgyness?

  5. While I agree with the differences being a sign, I don’t think memory amounts can be a good sign of dodgyness. I know in my own servers, we use 12 gigs of memory, 2 sticks of 2 gigs and 2 sticks of 4 gigs. 12 gigs of memory is not something found is most servers. (They originally had 4 gigs each. We got a deal on the 4 gig sticks. We just added them in. What else we going to do with the 2 gig sticks?)

  6. No. I wasn’t referring to the amount being 200MB — after all it’s just a container and the provider can set whatever weird number that’s not a power of 2. I was referring to the amount being inconsistent on the setup and offering page.

  7. I know. I was just supporting the the memory amounts that hosts set their systems to shouldn’t be used as a yardstick.

The differences between the advert copy should though. We had another one like that a few days ago I believe.

@comment1 – drmike, Google Apps does have a pretty decent uptime record, probably much better than a mx handler running on one single box – plus they have a paid option, so it could be that

Ideastack… I think they should be Worststack..

I signed up with their reseller hosting Gold Plan & paid them for 1 year and compromised them for 7 months completely in pain.

Poorest hosting company in the World. They provide you hosting on VPS server not on dedicated server which can be easily seen by their cpanel which is VPS Optimized, not VPS Accelerated, they provide shared hosting, reseller hosting and SEO hosting on the same single & only one VPS sever, which is often under load and websites are not accessible. Their greatest unprofessional act is that they change their server atleast 4-6 times in a year which results complete data loss, coz they never migrate your hosting accounts & data, which results websites are down for more than a week until you don’t upload manual backup if you have, If you don’t have any backup of your site, you’re screwed.

I had hosted 27 websites there & everytime I had to re upload the files manually, coz all the data were lost by their act of changing server. They are very careless about the data security, they even don’t have backups with them even after paying them for offsite backup plans.

When you do phone calls for support, the person on the other end is Shazim, who seems novice businessman & respond very unprofessionally – “Don’t call me or argue for anything, otherwise your hosting accounts will be terminated”. I think he should be sent to manners learning school so that atleast he can communicate to customer with some manners. On the other side Nizar their Support Specialist, often respond to your support tickets very rudely. I searched these two individuals on facebook & found that Nizar is an old man (father of Shazim), I think being old person he should have some industry experience, but seems like he doesn’t even knows how to do communicate to customers, English is very poor & so communication is not as expected.

All and all I would say never ever go with Ideastack, they don’t value for money what you pay them. This is the poorest hosting company I ever seen in my 9 years of industry experience.
