Just.Hosting contacted us to feature the announcement of their new AI assistant.
Just.Hosting has officially launched a next-generation AI-powered support chatbot, designed to make customer service faster, more efficient, and more human than ever before.
This intelligent assistant isn’t just another scripted chatbot. It’s a virtual expert trained on real-world cases, capable of understanding complex support issues, responding in multiple languages, and solving problems in seconds.
Key Capabilities:
- Instant support for VPS, domain, and SSL-related issues
- Natural, fluent multilingual communication
- Recognition of non-standard queries with adaptive, non-scripted responses
- Automatic collection of technical context before escalating to a human agent
Whether it’s a common task or an unexpected server issue, the chatbot is designed to either provide a complete solution or hand off the case — fully prepared — to a human support specialist.
According to Anton (@antonpa on LowEndTalk), “Our goal wasn’t to build a scripted bot — we wanted a truly helpful and friendly assistant. The Just.Hosting chatbot already supports hundreds of clients, and many don’t even realize they’re talking to AI.”
The bot is available at https://t.me/JustHostingBot and you don’t need to be a Just.Hosting customer to try it out.
So I did.
First Impressions
My initial thought was “at least they didn’t give it a name”. Seems like every site that goes down the AI assistant path insists of giving their bot a whimsical name, which all sound like rebranded Clippy to me.
Personally, I’m not wild about Telegram, don’t trust it, and never use it in my personal life. However, it’s very easy to spin up a bot on Telegram which is why you see so many sites using it.
Trying It Out
Let’s try something simple, which is something a Just.Hosting customer might typically ask:
This is a good response. If I had this question, getting a response in less than 60 seconds from the AI assistant is a better experience than waiting for a ticket response. Even if Just.Hosting support is fast, they’re not going to be that fast.
Let’s try something that’s more opinion-based:
I like this response. It answers the question and puts it in the right context. Just saying “yes” would be one level. Putting it into the bigger picture of improving security is the next level and the checklist given is good.
I followed up by asking for a step-by-step guide and it provided a good howto, including making the changes, how to use the ‘nano’ editor if you’re not familiar with vi/vim, opening firewall ports, and restarting the sshd service.
Now let’s try a question about Just.Hosting itself.
The correct answer is: China, Singapore, South Korea, and Japan. I don’t think think Israel, Turkey, or the UAE qualify as “Asia” though they may be classified by the old geonym “Asia Minor” which perhaps causes this confusion.
Let’s ask something else:
Unfortunately, I waited 10 minutes and didn’t get a response. This info appears to be available on the Just.Hosting web site:
So I continued on with the AI Assistant:
This seems to be using some “weasel words”. The cost is “typically” but “exactly pricing can vary”. I’m asking the price and the assistant is speaking in generalities.
Conclusion
I’m guessing that under the hood, this implemented either as:
- A “big AI” service (e.g., ChatGPT) API + with a custom GPT, loaded with a RAG (retrievel-automated generation).
- A locally-hosted LLM (e.g., Llama 3) with a RAG
A RAG is a custom database that augments the general service with specific information. So for example, ChatGPT without any modification knows how to change an SSH port. But ChatGPT by itself doesn’t know anything about Just.Hosting. So its knowledge is augmented by loading more data specific to Just.Hosting, which allows ChatGPT to be a more complete expert. The same can be done with a self-hosted LLM.
In this case, the Just.Hosting-specific part of the AI experience is weaker than the general questions. Asking if changing the SSH port improves security or how to change it was a 100% perfect response. Asking details about where Just.Hosting has service or how much adding an IP costs leaned heavily on the RAG, which is still evolving technology.
Still, this was a good experience and many users will find it beneficial. I should note that it speaks many languages (I only tested English), which is a huge plus. Also, if you’re having an issue with Just.Hosting service, the chatbot is designed to either provide a complete solution or hand off the case — fully prepared — to a human support specialist.
We’re going to see more and more of these AI solutions coming for support, as a way of reducing cost on the provider side and giving faster response to users. It’s still early days for this technology, so watch this space!
