LowEndBox Top Providers 2013 Q1 Results

Another quarter, another top providers poll! I’m delighted to be able to finally announce the three best providers for this quarter. The final full list of results will be posted on here and on LowEndTalk over the course of the next few days. I just need to ratify a few providers scores and thought I’d get this post submitted first. In this quarters poll 105 different hosts were selected by 252 members of our LowEndTalk community. Once again, thank you to everyone who has taken part and congratulations to the below three:

First: PrometeusSecond: RamNodeThird: BuyVM

Prometeus have now won the last three Top Providers polls and came within the top three for the last four polls. Prometeus were founded in 1997 and also operate under the OVerZold and IperWeb brands. OVerZold recently offered a 5GB OpenVZ vps for $7/month. Prometeus are still very active within the community and like to pull the odd prank :-) What customers are saying: Erawan “Great and friendly support, nice server/network/uptime.”, rds100 “Salvatore must be doing a lot of things right to be so successful. And my VPS with them is the most stable i have.” and finally, my favourite, from Eastonch “Salvatore is a magician.”.

RamNode have now featured in our last two Top Providers polls. RamNode offer both OpenVZ and KVM servers in Atlanta, GA. Their SSD and SSD-Cached VPSs certainly seem to get some of the best results when it comes to hardware benchmarking. They’re currently preparing to launch a second location. What customers are saying: texteditor “Great service, great ticket response time, great price, fast hardware, fast network (also lowest latency to my location in IN/KY region)” and Roph says “Just can’t complain… it’s not let me down. Also, dat disk i/o.”.

BuyVM have came in the top three of all our polls to date. A lot has happened in this year already for BuyVM. Francisco has sent a picture of the next version of Stallion for you guys to look at! What customers are saying: jaypeesmith says “Despite some recent bumps with network issues, I still have a great amount of trust in BuyVM. The storage VPS option is an incredible bargain… I spend a lot less to get a lot more with BuyVM.”.

Thank you everyone once again! In case you’re wondering, Hostigation came fourth with 91 points and trailing close behind in fifth is EDIS with 81 Points. I’ll try and get the full table released as quickly as possible!

I am a little disappointed at the celebrate offer of Prometeus this time, although the price is good… The offer should be KVM5, which is SAS VPS, not SSD VPS?

At the same time, the KVMSSD serial is no stock, the biz serial is no stock. The coupon code 25% recurring discount is only work for KVM VPS…

By the way, “From now on, their KVM servers will be using the SAN Hitachi HUS 150.” means no SSD KVM VPS anymore? How about the speed and IO rate?

    April 5, 2013 @ 4:28 pm | Reply
    • The offer is indeed for regular (not ssd) KVM :-)

The use of the Hitachi SAN HUS 150 (fiber channel) is for the KVMx SAS line of product. KVMSSD will be restocked later :-)

What is the price of additional IPv4 address, any limit, and ipv6?

Is the VPS node 10Gbps port speed or 10Gbps on each server?

I did not find these detail on your website.

i can guarantee you are not getting 10gbps on your server lol

        • Maounique:

You get /112 of IPv6 with each KVM, extra IPv4 are 12 Eur a year. Depending on your justification and availability, we can give 2-4 of them for each machine.
We have 10 gbps committed bandwidth with extra 10 in stand-by. Each node has 1 gbps port, shared among the machines there. Typical speeds within Italy are about 40 MB/s, Japan, Australia, getting about 3-4. It varies a lot depending on the other end, the further the destination, the more variations and lower the speed.

Why is Prometeus suddenly pricing all its VPS’s in GBP? Was there a server move to the UK that I didn’t notice? ;-) I think this is new, as my existing server is in USD and I thought some of the other offers were in Euros.

We will try to use more SAN storage, last 10 days had 2 raid problems, one of them meant we had to restore from back-up. As the server pool grows, it is more and more likely for this to happen, we try to offload the storage worries at least. That SAN is a beast, extremely expensive, really enterprise solution. If that fails… maybe it is time to retire :P

Coupon worked on 512, then I added a 128 and saw that the coupon applied to both. I removed the 512 from the cart and saw it still applied to the 128. Is that really what you wanted, 35% off of everything? If yes that’s great, if not you should probably fix it. I may order a 128 but if the 35% discount isn’t available I’ll understand and buy it anyway with the regular 15% mentioned.

The SSD plans are even more awesome (I don’t see how you can afford to offer them) and I’ll definitely keep them in mind, I just don’t have an immediate application. It would be great if you had some plans that had both SSD and regular HD, so that bulk serial data could go on the HD while using the SSD for more seek-intensive databases.

That’s the point of the SSD-cached plans. Each server gets 64 or 128gb of SSD caching to split between the users on the machine.

          April 6, 2013 @ 4:05 pm | Reply
        • Right, instead of having to worry about what to put on what partitions, SSD-Caching stores any hot data on the SSDs and stores the rest on the (plentiful) HDD space. We use the best caching system available and implement RAID10s of large SSD-caches, so it works very well.

I’ve been pretty impressed by Ramnode here on LEB for a while, and finally signed up for a VPS which is working great so far. Here are a few wishes that exceed my expectations for LEB’s but would make you even more awesome:

        1) Accept direct credit cards for payment, or offline payments for sufficient amounts ($100 and up, say). I hold my nose and use Paypal when I have to, but I see it as a recurring point of failure that can potentially disrupt important services, so I’m uncomfortable relying on it. I’ve had problems with it at two different hosts and had to leave one because of it. I’m planning to make this a significant factor in future purchases and “best of” voting.

        2) Assign internal IP addresses for connections between local VPS’s in addition to the public addresses, so that local traffic doesn’t count as internet bandwidth. This should be pretty easy.

        3) Have local mirrors of OS repos (e.g. Debian) for quicker installs. It would save you bandwidth too.

        4) Offer large storage plans. I have about 1TB online right now and always need more.

        5) Open a west coast US location.

        6) Show in the client area what hardware node a given VPS is assigned to, with the idea of letting people buy multiple VPS’s that are on separate nodes for failover and so forth. This should be easy, other hosts already do it.

        7) A kind of weird idea: open another installation near your existing one in Atlanta, but in a separate data center, say 1 mile away, with high speed private interconnect between the two. Separate geographical regions is done all the time and is good for obvious reasons, but communication is usually over the slow public internet, making (e.g.) real-time database replication painful. Of course same-town DC wouldn’t help against a city-wide disaster, but there are many outages on LET where a DC is offline for a while and it would help with this. It’s also more peace of mind for ordinary system backups that are too large to easily transfer by internet.

        8) Colocate in a DC that also hosts VOIP termination services. I’d like to run a SIP server on a VPS without having to rely on flaky multi-hop internet connections between the client and server.

        • Hi Paul,

It would be best to send those to us directly as it’s hard to keep track of specific comments on this website.

We’re not going to be opening anything near Atlanta any time soon since we are in the process of opening a Seattle location within a couple weeks.

I can’t address everything you posted here, but I will let you know that if you need more bandwidth for local VPS to VPS connections, we are happy to provide it for free. We will implement an internal IP system when we feel that it is done in an ideal manner. Just using the existing SolusVM system would not meet our standards.

We also accept Google Wallet as an alternative to PayPal.

          April 6, 2013 @ 9:05 pm | Reply
        • paul:

Thanks. Yes the second Atlanta location was kind of an off-the-wall idea. Seattle will be nice and I might get a VPS there, though what I really want is northern California.

I don’t want to use Google Wallet since I already have Paypal and the idea is to eliminate these intermediaries, not add more of them. I’m also averse to Google for the usual Big Brotherish reasons. I’m (reluctantly) ok with Paypal as long as I don’t have to give them my checking account number. Even billing Paypal to a credit card, though, I’m still uncomfortable using it for anything important.

Thanks for the info about VPS to VPS bandwidth. The other stuff (other than storage plans) is all outside of normal LEB offerings and mostly mentioned to give you an idea of what some of us are doing with VPS’s, so no big deal.

        • aMunster:

          1) Accepting credit cards directly costs money. I’ve used four providers, none of which do it this way. Paypal was built to benefit smaller companies like this.

          2) BuyVM does this.

          3) Ramnode, BuyVM and many others do this. OpenVZ template / KVM iso repository.

          4) BuyVM does this. 250gb is $7/mo up to 2tb for $60/mo. This is in their west coast location.

          5) Opening a new location is hard!

          6) I don’t have a use for this. I can see the benefit.

          7) I don’t like the sound of this.

          8) I don’t have an opinion on this. You could find out by contacting each provider, I’m sure.

          April 6, 2013 @ 10:22 pm | Reply
      • paul:

        aMunster:

        1) If credit cards cost a little extra, I’d rather just pay a bit more than have to deal with *&^*#*#!@ Paypal. It doesn’t even have to be credit cards. Money orders, bank checks, cash in paper bags etc. all work fine for me, with no possibility of chargebacks for the host. Bitcoin is ok in principle but I’ve never bothered figuring out how to use it (I sort of regret that now due to the recent run-up). IPXCore is my current favorite LEB host (I named them as #1 in the earlier top providers thread) in part because they bill CC’s through Stripe, which requires no signup and so far seems to be much nicer than Paypal. OVH can bill CC’s in France but (for now) not Canada. Hetzner also can bill CC’s. Of course the non-LEB VPS sector (Rackspace etc) all can bill CC’s or issue paper invoices. Companies trying to present themselves as alternatives to those guys should give that issue some thought.

        2) BuyVM since January requires the extra-obnoxious form of Paypal where you have to give Paypal your checking account number so they (Paypal) can raid it. Hell will freeze before I give them that. Too many horror stories. I still like BuyVM in most other regards but I had to leave over that.

        3) I’m not talking about templates, I’m referring to keeping a mirror of the package repos nearby (100’s of GB). I do see that the Debian repos are faster than they used to be (debian.org explains some hardware donations they got) so I guess this is less than an issue now. But “apt-get install g++” takes several minutes from debian.org vs 30 seconds or so from a local mirror.

        4) Yes I had 750GB of BuyVM storage KVM’s when I left there. Currently most of the data is parked on an OVH dedicated server and some of it belongs there, but I’d like to find a different home for the rest since the OVH server was actually intended for a different purpose.

        5) Yes it is! But most of the bigger LEB hosts are doing it.

6-8) I don’t know how to estimate demand for these things, all I know is that I’m interested in them. I had thought #6 was pretty common.

IMHO in case of spamming, there might be a one time pardon if the investigation revealed that the “spammer” is a newbie and the alleged “spammer” would cover the cost of damages he/she has done (i.e. causing ip blacklisted).

In case of phishing, it is obvious that it is an intention of deliberately conducting an act of crime, and subject to be reported to FBI or other legal authority.

Stay away from this damn scam. They will extort your money by suspending your VPS under your account!

Buyvm is a real scam. Maybe it owned by Chinese guys, because they knew chinese and Pinyin, so I guess they’re Chinese. They have a damn AUP/TOS, There will be fines for people who not follow their AUP.such as you typed a wrong address or sth stupid information. they will suspend your vps under you account or your IP(yes,if you registered one more account under a ip) they will record it and wait for your VPS running one or two months or longer. They suddenly suspend your all accounts and extorted money USD $25.

You can search google, there are many reports for this. Buyvm – Buy a Very daMn thing!

Tianyi,I hope you will enter a wrong telephone number to the register form and your vps will be suspended, and you have to pay $25 to re-enable again. but you found that they don’t care your shit information, because you can enter 000000 as your telephone number, they will re-enable your vps , they just need the money. I’ve never met these kind of a shit. If you like, please do continue. I just quit.

    Hello!

Just wanted to warn you guys about BuyVM. I am not easily disappointed, especially when you consider the price, but think twice before purchasing their vps!

    WARNING! BECAREFUL OF BUYVM!

I purchased one of their kvm vps in December, and it immediately got cancelled for no apparent reason. So I contacted their sales. Here is a transcript. I am Josh, and Val is the support staff. I can provide screenshots as well. Just pm me.

    Hello,

I just purchased a kvm vps in the Las Vegas data center, but it has been canceled.

Why? Why have I not been notified of the reason?

    Best regards,

    Hello,

I don’t know why the order was declined. This is my first order with you. I would think you should know why since you represent buyvm.

    Best regards,

Yes, I do know why. Once you have taken the time to read our policies, you will know this answer as well.

    Hello,

Seriously, this is the most unhelpful support system I have ever encountered. I have read your TOS, and I still don’t know why. Now will you tell me or what? I’m getting impatient.

If you don’t, I will have to report you to buyvm because they are paying you for nothing, since you don’t provide support.

    Best regards,

Your misunderstanding is unfortunate, but the reason we require you to tell us what policy you were in violation of is to ensure that you have actually taken the time to read said policies – this is SOP and asked of all persons that disregard our TOS upon signup. There’s nothing we can do about “being unhelpful” if you’re going to simply ignore the instructions we give. If you wish to “report me to buyvm” you are more than welcome to – such reports come to me anyways. I’ll be sure to have a word with myself about doing such a fine job remaining patient with users that seem to willfully disregard our rules.

Again, we ask that you fully read our Terms of Service, and find the policy that you are neglecting. Once you’ve done so and we’re confident that you’re ready to abide by our conditions for retaining service with us, we’ll provide further instruction on how to proceed.

    ———

As you can see, I wanted to abide by the TOS, and I read them, but I still could not tell why my vps had been cancelled. I think it is the job of the support team to provide support (duh!) and tell me why and what can be done about it.

I have not tried their service yet, and frankly, I am afraid to do so since I obviously cannot rely on their support team when something goes wrong.

This also shows that their team is not qualified. When I contacted Francisco, another of their staff, he also refused to acknowledge the unprofessional way their support team dealt with the problem.

AGAIN, DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY! BUYVM SUPPORT IS RUBBISH, THEIR STAFF ARE NOT PROFESSIONAL!!!

Most likely they are going to try and find excuses. But this is an honest review of their services, and I hope that you will see it for what it is, the truth.
