LowEndBoxTV: CentOS...What Happened?!?

CentOS, RIP…long live CentOS Stream?!? What hath IBM wrought? In this video, we break down the CentOS drama.

As you can tell from the thumbnail…it isn’t pretty!  You could answer the question in one word: IBM.  But the roots of what happened pre-date IBM’s involvement.

We also mention Alma Linux and Rocky Linux.

For those who really like the RPM ecosystem and are now really skittish about Red Hat clones (and rightfully so!), look into OpenSUSE.

With their 15.3 release next month, they’ll be hitting a target many of us had hoped would happen for CentOS under Red Hat stewardship: binary identical distributions between the community/open source and commercial/enterprise distributions. None of this “you get the dregs of the Enterprise distro while being our guinea pigs” that CentOS became.

For most of us, it’s just learning zypper instead of yum/dnf. Well-packaged third party stuff for CentOS/RHEL just works.

SuSE isn’t a huge name here in North America, but they are huge in Europe. It’s one of the three distros officially supported by the likes of Dell.

Just food for thought, and I’ve been thinking about it a lot since CentOS originally became part of Red Hat…

I prefer articles, text, over video. In my opinion, real information recognition is by text. Thank you.
