I mean, what else are we to conclude from the news?
Meta split up its Responsible AI team – you know, the folks who make sure that AI is safe and will never pose a danger to humans – and moved them to the Generative AI product development team.
This is like a health food company taking all of its auditors who make sure food is nutritious and reassigning them to develop higher octane sugar cereals.
As part of its “Year of Efficiency,” Meta has been doing lots of layoffs and reorgs, and apparently worrying about where AI could be going is less important than getting more Gen AI products out the door.
Automated systems on Meta’s social platforms have led to problems like a Facebook translation issue that caused a false arrest, WhatsApp AI sticker generation that results in biased images when given certain prompts, and Instagram’s algorithms helping people find child sexual abuse materials.
Ouch.
