LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

Netcetera Cracks the Wordpress Market with Highly-Available Hosting!

NetceteraIf you want to host a WordPress site, you have a few options.

First, you can sign up with any web host and install WordPress yourself, or use one of the one-click installers built into many providers’ panels.  If you take this tack, then you’re largely responsible for issues.  If the server goes down or there’s a network problem, the provider will fix it, but if you hit some WP bug or have an issue with a plugin, that’s entirely on you.  Most shared web hosting is not highly available and you’re on a node with a thousand other accounts.

Or you might rent your own VM or dedicated server and setup the web stack yourself.  You can get much more horsepower this way (as much as you care to pay for) but then everything above the hardware is on you – patching the OS, backups, etc.

At the other end of the spectrum, there’s the white-glove services.  You might pay $25+ a month but they take care of everything – server, network, WordPress, etc.  All you provide is content.  There are sometimes limitations about installing plugins and you don’t get access to the server, so if you have some fancy customizations or automation, it all has to be at the WP level.

Now…what if you’re somewhere in between?

  • Maybe you’re reasonably technically savvy and don’t want to pay the high prices of white-glove hosting.
  • But you also don’t want some bargain-basement hosting.
  • You need some horsepower, and also want the site to be highly available so that if there’s a server issue, your site keeps chugging on alternate nodes.

Is there such a solution?  You bet: Netcetera.

They’re an IOM company providing “High Availability Plesk Web Hosting in multiple locations keeping your website, database and emails always online no matter what, starting at just £1 for the first month!”

Let’s look at some details:

  • Service is in the Isle of Man
  • Two servers for HA, with a MySQL NDB cluster
  • Plans include both a production and a development (staging) site
  • The usual trimmings: LiteSpeed, free migration, etc.

This offer won’t be for everyone but if you want something in between dollar store and Tiffany’s, Netcetera might be what you’re looking for.

I really enjoyed the series I read on this very site about redundant MySQL replication. I tried googling it and it appears similar strategies have been posted since 2014. What’s more cloud agnostic than this DIY expertise?

I first learned about these last year, shortly after being indoctrinated by AWS certification. They have a lot of great high level ideas we can “borrow”. I imagine https://lowendbox.com/blog/how-to-setup-a-highly-available-wordpress-from-scratch-part-3/ would still be very relevant.
