LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

NordicVPS - $4.50 512MB OpenVZ VPS in Germany Exclusive Offer

Updated February 2012 — It’s long time coming, but NordicVPS has finally bite the dust. Website is no longer working on 24 January 2012. Bye!

NordicVPS Adam and the NordicVPS team had sent me their new year offer for the LowEndBox readers. $4.50/month OpenVZ VPS using this sign up link to order.

  • 512MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer
  • 1x IPv4 + 8x IPv6
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers are in Frankfurt in Germany. rDNS is available via support ticket, and you can pay up to a year (no further discount though). There has been quite a bit of discussion from their previous German offer post regarding IPv6, which is only available on more expensive packages (not on $15/year 128MB VPS). NordicVPS is Denmark based provider. You can check their previous offers here and evaluate. Mixed comments although the support has been slow recently.

  1. 1x IPv4 + 8x IPv8 ?

    What is IPv8 LEA?
    Is it a new technology?

      • If there’s IPv8, I wonder if they will be using Base32 rather than Hex in representing IPv8 addresses. It’d be fun as we’ll be having some funny or weird “named” IP addresses.

Maybe IPV8 has easier to read addresses, like

      67.245.235.523.652.673.536.235.836.624.534.566.731.777.7346.23.562.236.157.733

      Lovely.

It’s worth reading previous comments as LEB says. NordicVPS promised free V6 addresses, people signed up, then they decided they weren’t getting them for free. That’s not a company I’d do business with.

There’s also been chatter about support ignoring tickets for days at a time. Again, unacceptable at any price point.

    January 6, 2011 @ 3:28 pm | Reply
    • simplyfast:

Actually they are giving them for free now for 512MB + packages.
No one ignored no tickets, there was a delay answering those tickets, but now they’re fine.

      January 6, 2011 @ 9:21 pm | Reply
      • Gary:

They told people on the lower packages they’d be getting them for free too. They lied.

And not answering tickets is ignoring them. I did specifically say that they were only ignoring them for a matter of days, not indefinitely. Customers weren’t getting so much as an acknowledgment.

The bottom line is that people were promised free V6 addresses, and they’re not getting them. They’ve paid a year up front, in some cases. If that’s not bait and switch, what is?

For Debian/Ubuntu just install and run miredo and you have IPv6.

It seems like Francisco (BuyVM) is at the moment the only guy at LEB capable to set up properly working native IPv6 at OpenVZ nodes. I am not sure how he did it while all rest hosts advertized here failed however after so many failed attempts of various.. hostrail, nordicpvs, etc hosts… there seems to be only one solution. Server i DE was down because Hetzner locked the server because we were hit by a couple of abusive customers on same server. We had to send them some signed paperwork before they released the server back to us.

Server i Fremont was down after a kernel upgrade went wrong. We wanted to support PPP for VPN and add support for ArchLinux and other OS that requires a newer kernel. We had to get help from the DC which caused a big delay before the server was up again.

If you need a tight SLA I suggest you stay away from a budget VPS. We have new premium VPS packages you review them here: https://nordicvps.com/premium.html

  18. On the contrary, I’m on the FMT01 node, and I had more than a month of uptime before the two crashes last week. It’s understandable that a budget VPS will not have 100% uptime; if you need 100%, don’t buy the cheap ones.

However, I’ve noticed that they DO cap bandwidth at 5Mbit for their cheaper offerings. Still, enough for a midsize site (but no gameservers or anything). Also, support is piss poor, taking up to 2 weeks minimum in my experience. Only buy if you can self-manage.

The one good thing is that they aren’t oversold (too much). I have decent I/O (>100MB/s) and decent latency (4ms within California). The weird thing is that the server is registered to Nordic in Denmark, so reverse geolocation apps always think that I’m in Denmark whenever I use the VPS as a SSH tunnel.

Overall, I’d recommend them, but only if you can provide your own support (or know some Unix longbeards).

Did not need support yet, so I cannot say anything about that. But people, I really hope you don’t think you get instant support and a 100% uptime on a VPS for $1,25/month? Don’t be so cheap if you need it. I’m happy with it as long as it runs, and if it stops then so be it. In todays world a bread is more expensive than this, and there will be enough VPS providers just like there is enough bread…

Yes, they are completely useless. Whole time some maintenance, whole time downtimes, IPv6 sometimes works, most of the time not, etc, etc… Are their nodes on dial-up? I didn’t know that hetzner provide dedicated servers on dial-up…
My desktop PC with Win XP seems more stable with longer uptime than nordicvps nodes.

I decided to forget for this vps for some month or so in hope that one day when I log in (presumably I will still have same IP, and they wont be in end pool) things will magicly work.

Imho they would easily compete for “worst vps host of the year” at LEB. Their german nodes have roughly 70% uptime and what’s even worse, they always vanish when things go wrong and ignore tickets (which means every month for week or two) but then after some time they appear at WHT or here with “if someone have some issue send us ticket”. What ticket? Do you fooling us?
Oh, and why I write “they” as it’s obviously one man host! I really have no understanding for such incompetence.

I have two VPS there. In past month i had about 40% uptime. But that is not uptime as expected, they crippled all VPSs on german nodes (they cant pay for servers so they go to few bigger). VPS’s work with one CPU Core at 800mhz because nodes are overcrowded. With that VPS u can’t do anything except for blog… Recently i moved customers to other server and wanted to use vps as seedbox (network is still good 1gbps), but when i do reinstall no vps can boot (but i can ping ip!?). Support don’t respond except for uniform messages like “we are moving VPS to other node”, “Moving failed, expect downtime”… So far they moved mu VPS THREE TIMES (ovz02, ovz03, vm03, vm09). Admin it is time for dead pool… They took our money and when bills came they are nowhere to be found… I lost 70$ with this b-e-e-p company…

Now u see how nice is to now know what is going on and to have customers demanding services that they already paid.
So now is expected another 3 weeks downtime for new transfers. Nice service u got, for 12 months we get 10….
Hetzner is company with good reputation and they do reply to tickets, and they shut down only when u dont pay or breake rules. Friend of mine have server there and never expirienced problems in last 8 months…
So there is something else happening and it is not about Hetzner….

        • Once again, we have been with Hetzner for 5+ years now.

Always received good service but lately they become very slow to act on our requests compared to earlier.

We are tired they block whole server without notice even we act fast on abuse cases.

We have servers that work just fine and others just get blocked, because of problems with customers causes abuse on the network.

        • Good freaking god. Your insisting on migrations every couple weeks is like INCEPTION going terribly terribly wrong.

“We must go a level deeper

Your poor clients have been through how many IP swaps so far? You’ve still not answered peoples request for information about your gigenet setup. Just think of your clients for once and “Start -> Run -> calc” before you try to fund this next venture with more random yearlies deals that don’t make sense. You told everyone $15/y wasn’t float able, but now $20/y is? How is $5/y going to help that much?

I really really really try these days to stay out of other companies affairs but as someone that has been with absolutely horrid providers in the past, this is just insane.

      • @Francisco Unfortunately we do not have a large amount of IPv4 subnets like you, so we are forced to assign customers a new IP.

Hetzner first told us we can migrate IPs but then later it was not possible to swap between their own “Datancenters” e.g from DC10 to DC14 where new servers are deployed.

But NOW, all $15/year customers in Germany has been migrated and collected on separate nodes so other customers are not affected by the trouble caused by a few bad people.

        @lupetalo
I am sorry for the trouble but once again, we still awaits response from Hetzner to our tickets!

        • I’m not even bringing my ventures into this, I’m commenting as simply an observer.

We are getting very tired of Hetzner and are looking for a new German Datacenter.

That right there is what I mean. You had a falling out with hetzner just last year where you had nodes disabled because of supposed abuse. Why go and dump more money in setup fee’s/etc just recently to now be looking at yet another?

      • @Francisco We recently discontinued our XEN servers with GigeNET since low demand for the service :)

It also reflected on the order page while network pages has not been updated but I will see it get done.

People who look up “Frantech” on WHT, will see lot of bad experince with Frantech before their launch of BuyVM :)

          Some topics:
          Stay Well away from Frantech.ca!!!
          FranTech.ca is T-R-A-S-H
http://www.frantech.ca down AGAIN and no support
          Frantech Down
          Frantech Down?

I guess it proves we all struggle at some point but that doesn’t mean a provider is bad :)

        • We never put people through tons of IP renumbers to get things corrected. When we left Portland and got things spiffed in Fremont we didn’t have to renumber then either. Anyone that was with us at Steadfast was quite happy with things (minus latency to Asia) and things only went ugly in Portland. LEA even put our first listing from 2008 on deadpool watch when we suffered a 14 hour outage at said DC.

They claim to be in this for 5 years and if that’s the case why didn’t they arrange some IP space somewhere or be proactive after the last time they pulled boxes? I can understand it happening once and they got caught off guard but if that’s the case this time it’s a ’round 2′ thing. I know hetzner & OVH are jumpy for such cases so why stick with it?

There are a good hand full of DC’s in Germany to pick through so I’m just “WTFing” about it all.

        • We mainly hosted XEN servers, with XEN there is no overselling and with the limited resources provided by servers @ Hetzner (12GB RAM) — We ordered special servers with 24GB and Hardware upgrades while our XEN servers run i7 975 not i7 920 because those servers were only equipped with 8GB before they introduced new server range with 24GB RAM as default.

So our servers actually costs more than their new 24GB servers because we paid extra setup fees and a larger monthly fee for the special setups.

We required max /27 subnet pr server and Hetzner does not provide IP pooling so we never was in a position that required us to have large /24 subnets, instead we have many smaller subnets in range /27, /26 and /25

How about another migration? This time to NetDirekt (Leaseweb Germany)

    April 1, 2011 @ 11:13 am | Reply
    • The servers offered by NetDirekt are not suitable for our services.

They once offered similar servers like Hetzner (i7.series), We also been with other German providers but their hardware sucked very much, even they claimed Enterprise grade hardware with Dual XEON their server performance terrible because of old out-dated hardware.

If Leaseweb offers better server hardware in Germany, we will consider them.

  42. Update: They just provided us KVM access, server is up and fine, but network is not working.

I suspect they may have “accidentally” disconnected our network cable, it happend to us once before.

      • I know this sounds silly and really doesn’t affect anything or anyone here but this is why I love using a datacenter in the same town I live in. Got a hardware issue? I’m there in about 20-40 minutes depending on the buses.
