LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

RackMountain - $2.95 128MB OpenVZ VPS (+$1.95 Setup) in Dallas

RackMountain Nick from RackMountain emailed me about their recently launched VPS startup and some specials for the low end community. As seen on this WHT offer, they are having OpenVZ plans from $2.95/month.

  • 128MB memory
  • 5GB storage
  • 50GB/month data transfer
  • 1x IPv4 + 5x IPv6
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

One catch — if you are paying monthly you’ll also need to pay $1.95 once-off setup fee, which means your first payment will be $4.90. Alternatively it’s $34.95/year without the setup fee, although for a new company I’ll be hesitated to commit for the whole year. Servers with Softlayer in Dallas (test IP: 74.86.173.2), although their data center page gives you an impression that you can choose anywhere Softlayer has a PoP.

Website looks great. ToS is properly segmented into sections so you know which part applies to OpenVZ VPS. Domain created in Jan 2011, although it appears that it was not opened until early April. It appears Nick P previously ran “RapidServers.org” since November 2010, last related offer on WHT in January 2011, and the domain has an empty home page.

Anyway. This offer is limited to 15 signups, although it looks like their SolusVM is down right now so do expect a bit of delay deploying your VPS.

    Hello,

    SolusVM is currently being and was tested but we noticed when we started deploying setups instantly it was giving users already in use IP addresses. Sadly we put SolusVM control panel on hold until this is sorted out.

    Thanks,
    Nick

      Their text is their logo maybe.

      If your meaning icon, not even LowEndBox has a logo. And neither does BuyVM an a whole load of other companies here.

      • Some people might not think this way, but typography can also be treated as a logo. Sorry I can’t really tell the fonts used, but the green words “RackMountain” with vertical gradient is good enough for me.

        Likewise, “Google” in blue/red/yellow/blue/green/red is a logo. So is “low end box” with a green “end” :)

    Now, the rep on WHT (RapidServers_, aka, Nick Perkins), had a previous thread a while ago asking for a job… with horrible grammar and the times he was available was only afterschool, I laugh in the middle paragraph, “. If they happen to threaten me i just say “Sir/Mam, may you please clam down?”. I am able to work from 5PM Eastern time zone up till 10PM Eastern Time Zone, Mondays – Thursdays. I don’t see this as being a real negative thing at all. I’m giving this company a chance
      and I don’t think its fair to write him off as a someone to be avoided simply because of his
      age.

      I think we should review him based on his actions which have been okay as far as I can see.

        However if you like hosting with kids with no past positive history then all the power to you. :)

        Aren’t you Daniel like 16 and you were looking to sell out your Minecraft Biz on WHT?

          I’m 16, amazing. You’re notice I don’t hide it and its even on my LowEndTalk profile. I’ve also left school.

          Not only did I setup a Minecraft “Biz”, I coded a complete server control platform thats one of the widest used platform in Minecraft today, problem with that? Not many “underage” teens have the ability todo that!

      Just for reference heres the email I sent LEB below

      =====================

      Hello,

      I’m Nick Perkins from RackMountain and would like to share a special offer with the low end community.

      RackMountain was started late 2010 but didn’t have a name till January 26th. We recently opened RackMountain, but we won’t let that get in the way of climbing you to the top! We believe in quality for a price. We are aware we are not the cheapest provider you may have seen, but please remember you get what you pay for.

      RackMountain has chosen the SoftLayer for their networking and hardware. Below you will find a test IP for the SoftLayer Datacenter

      IP: 74.86.173.2

      As for the offer we are offering the below package for $2.95/monthly + $1.95 setup fee or $34.95/yearly. Note: After the first monthly order it changes to yearly. Our reason for doing this is so users can try the service as we don’t offer a refund on our VPS services. I believe personally that people should have the opportunity to test without the overhead of them paying for a years worth of service.

      Plan Details – 15 in stock!
      5GB of webspace
      50GB of bandwidth
      128MB of Ram
      Shared CPU
      OpenVZ Virtualization
      1 IPv4 Address and 5 IPv6 Addresses
      Hosted in Dallas SoftLayer
      Not Managed
      SolusVM Control Panel – (Note: All clients will have a SolusVM login by Thursday (Being setup and deployed currently)
      Order Link:

      Note: Services are setup within 4-16 hours due to the fact we don’t use automatic setup. RackMountain believes in the old fashion way as it tends to get things done correctly and so we can check for fraud orders.

      If you have any questions feel free to leave them in the comments and Nick will reply back with an answer to your question.
      =======================

      As you can see I didn’t hide my full name.

    • Yeah I did see the WHT post on Nick trying to pick up a support job. There are plenty of 13-18 years old doing low end VPS hosting and having their “companies” featured here. I used to highlight the fact that a minor is running the show, and probably be marked as discriminating against young hark working people :P

      Yes I think the lack of experience can be an issue. Other commitments can also be an issue (don’t you guys have to go to school/college and do your home work?!!) There’s also lack of legal binding when you deal with a minor. But yeah, every saga has a beginning…

    Hello,

    Regarding this whole Facebook yes it is me. I’m not going to beat around the bush with the whole 16 year old hosting provider. I’m providing service and I’ve had little or no complaints so far. I treat all my clients with respect and understand people tend to flip when they find out that you are a 16 year old. To be completely honest I don’t think it matters at all, As long as you aren’t blowing people off and understand hosting your fine. I’m a A/B honor student that loves computers very much, I’ve been into them since I was 5 and never have gotten off them.

    As for selling out no way! Reason why I stopped RapidServers is because I wanted to market the domain. As I started getting some advice from others in the hosting community and RapidServers wasn’t marketed correctly. So I took months to develop a business plan and settle on a good marketable domain. As you can see our TOS – http://rackmountain.com/TOS.html was all custom (Think I’d waste my time if I was going to sell out). As you can see I’m dedicated to this and I do want to lead RackMountain to the top.

    If you have any questions feel free to ask away now that the cats out of the bag :)

      @Penguin

      1.I don’t blame you at all. I do feel people deserved to know but in the real world lots of people think us “kids” don’t know anything. I wanted to prove people wrong with this whole thing. I mean lots of sites and iphone apps are designed by 15/16 year old kids.

      2. Due to certain law restrictions we can’t become a registered company yet (looked into this during winter break this year).

        • Some quick google’ing says no but you have to be of the majority age to act as director of such a company.

          Damn if I know though.

          I think it was but if I remember correctly I’d have to file on the parents income gross. My dad “John Perkins” works as his own business “Perkins Consulting Group” and is working on a project currently and his income is already enough. Last month he bought me a car Honda Accord 2011 because he was making to much money (Tax benefits for his business). [humor] funny how we all can’t have these problems.[/humor]

          This summer I’ll look back into currently studying for my exams which take place next week.

          -Note: School and my support time do sometimes get in the way but I do take my time to respond to tickets during school. Most tickets have a 1 hour response time unless at night.

      @Penguin

      School I manage the servers via SoftLayer app and do replies to tickets. Most time I’ve taken at school to reply was 2 hours, least time was 14 minutes. As for sleeping I go to bed around 12:00AM and wake up at 5:45AM and during the time I’ve hired a support tech Matthew Brown to help manage during my off times.

      So yes I’ve thought about this ;)

        Unfortunately the provider I use for dedicated servers dosen’t have a Manager or Mobile App, so I just use Safari and SSH on my phone.

    I wouldn’t be talking you’re the one that’s selling out according to your WHT thread previously… so what if you coded a control panel if you’re going to sell out when you’re 16 somethings not right or you must be focusing on school all the power to you ;-)

        Yes it is. I was looking into selling Minecraft servers but its so competitive and pricing has to be just right. In all honesty I kind of want to ask them “Do you make any profit?”. BroHoster is a good example as they are high quality servers.

      I’m pretty sure I’m not the only hosting provider thats a kid in the world. Most of the time kids try to cover their names and hide everything. Kind of like playing a game of cards you need to have a pokerface. Most of the times kids make many mistakes (Ex: Puts their real name) and there goes their pokerface. Once they do that everything comes out and they will try to lie about everything. For me I think honesty is the key to winning, so I wasn’t going to lie and say it wasn’t me. As chances are later down the road it will bite me and then customers will flip out over the lying.

      I look forward to continuing RackMountain :)

  11. Volume VPS User:

    The good:

    The Xen instance we got functioned well technically. Both IPv4 and IPv6. There were no operational problems except for one server shutdown due to communications problems. (note to vendors: those shutdowns cost more than the VPS is worth – don’t be so fast to do it if you want to keep legitimate business)

    The bad:

    Provisioning emails were stuck somewhere in cyberspace for nearly a month. So initial use of the server was delayed because no response could be had until a dispute was filed with PayPal. Initial communications from RackMountain were hostile, but recovered.

    Comments:

    In our opinion, this vendor has not yet stabilized. The last communications we received indicated that IPs were being changed, and the VPS server was being rehosted to a different ISP AND different platform.

    The vendor shows promise, but is not ready for prime time yet. The vendor seems to recognize this and is offering a very low price. If price matters, and you can ride out the bumps, we would recommend this vendor.
