LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

SemoWeb - $21/Year 256MB OpenVZ VPS

Semoweb Dustin from SemoWeb Technologies has been emailing me to try to get their old offer back on LowEndBox front page again :) Same deal — $21/year for the following VPS (sign up link):

  • 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Dustin mentioned that they have 30 in stock. Servers with Limestone Networks in Dallas, where they resell 123Systems’ nodes from. That does put the reseller into a tricky situation — why would you want to pay more and get less, when 123Systems is doing their own round of Christmas special for cheaper?

Unsatisfactory service, my VPS has been unavailable for over 2 days now…

    • I’m going to *cough* express my annoyance once again with these anonymous commenters. No disrespect to “Jonathan Roy” if you are a real person but seeing these types of statements while they offer no proof or state how they’re connected with the offer or what type of plan they have offers little feedback.

    • A quick look into our data base we have tons of Johnathan’s but NO Johnathan Roy.

None of our servers are having issues, so i request you provide some proof you are a client.

You are more than welcome to post screen shots of your paid invoices and services here at SemoWeb to Validate your comments.

We have built a great relation with them so we do continue to resell them.

All servers are set up randomly in different locations.

      • Jake,

Theres nothing to hide, for example lets say your client calls you saying my website is DOWN.

You reply may i have the ip or host name you have hosted with us and they ignore the question and keep saying my website/server is DOWN.

How are you going to help them without them providing information?

We don’t just run off 1 server so its not that simple to locate a server outage that someone is claiming but yet providing the information so it can be checked.

Your are open to your opinion on how my customer skills are how ever im sure you would be frustrated and would not have a problem letting the public know how frustrating it is when clients request help but never give you the details..

  15. Semo User:

I’ve been using Semo for a couple of months and I’m relatively happy with their service. I have, on a number of occasions, tried connecting to my VPS, only to find it was shutdown “due to network issues” as one CSR called it. If you want a box with great uptime, I wouldn’t go for this service. I would say my machine gets “rebooted” by semo once every two weeks. This is pretty horrible and I’d never run any mission critical software on this service.

    • Semo User:

Actually, upon checking my machine this morning. It looks like it was again rebooted last night 12 hours ago. Thankfully I’ve got everything to load up when linux boots, but having them “reboot” all the VPSs so much is pretty annoying. I guess you get what you pay for.

  19. Lots of Semoweb bashing going on I see. To be honest I don’t think it’s fair. I bought one of their $21/year plans two months ago, and I’ve had two months of good service. Performance has been fine and tickets are answered promptly and politely.

But a problem occurred with this latest offer. The day after it appeared here the performance of my Semoweb VPS dropped, and dropped again. The old issue — disk IO. At a guess, they packed a few too many accounts onto a node, or got a new abuser. I opened a ticket, got a prompt reply, and they’ve promised that some accounts will be migrated off the node to relieve the pressure.

IMO that’s the right thing to do. They’re not the first super-budget host to encounter this problem. For $21/year it’s expected. If they carry though with the migrations and return performance to an acceptable level, then I’d say they’re doing a damn fine job.

But it’s New Year Day, so I’ll give ’em a couple more days to relax and sort it out :)

Dustin@ this will be my last comment about company, because i already gave up on this so called vps.
When server was down, you guys always said that i.p is pinging. We don’t care whether i.p pings or not,
the Solus control is down, inside Solus, it shows red color, and the website is not working, SSH is not
    working, nothing works.
So, please don’t insult customers with i.p pings, forget i.p pings or not.
Also, when you said server was not down, I asked 123systems, and they confirm it was down.
So, don’t make a fool out of yourself, and if you don’t know what to do or what to say, just keep quiet.
And you kept saying ticket number? I already gave you 3 tickets from WHT, so don’t ask any ticket.

  34. Dustin CEO im not being nasty but your hosting is the worse ever ! I made a ticket up saying my ftp is showing a error and wont let me get in then your ” staff” says this
    “Hello,
I could see that the domain “myodmainame.com” is having an empty document root with out any files and folders. Please verify. Let me know the Kloxo admin login details so that I can check the issue with the webmail.”

Webmail ? my ftp is down not webmail :S Your staff does understand English ?
I think you should get more staff. I made a ticket yesterday #509587 <– id and said my ftp is down now today 24 hours late you say is my webmail down :S

Semoweb is the worse hosting ever . They don;t offer refunds because they wouldn't have no customers. If they offered a refund every one would run away. But because they don;t offer a refund ppl got to stay with them.

My server was down for 7 days IP Address: 64.31.51.136 can do a down time report if needed . I was told it was a hardware fail ( like other posts on here ) My websites are my business they are making 1000 pound a day 7 days of down time = 7000 pound lose.
That week me and my family had to go with out food because the sites are my income.
I told Semoweb all this and they blamed me for it. " You should of kept doing back ups then maybe the hardware fail wouldn't happen" After they got the server back up after 7 days it would boot up then go back down again. So toke another 3 days for them to fix. It has been up for 2 days with no errors now guess what ? The ftp is down on all accounts so can't upload files.

The staff at Semoweb are dull :) you tell them ftp and they think webmail ?
Please don't get hosting with them !! Hostgator are a lot better :)

  37. The disk performance on my $21/year Semoweb has gotten increasing worse over the past couple of months. For the past couple weeks it’s been really bad — to the point of useless.

I suppose I could open a support ticket with them about this, but I don’t think I will. I’m tired of it. If a provider is really monitoring their boxes they’d see this kind of issue and fix it.

    Instead I cancelled.

  38. Hello,

The 21$ year plans are from 123systems when we resold them how ever as you know we have our own boxes now.

Also yes we have been having complaints of up time, io, speed with people who are on the 123systems boxes.

What we have been doing is clients who are facing such issues we offer migration to our nodes which run way better.

I apologize about that and I have not disappeared.

    August 28, 2011 @ 7:33 pm | Reply
    • Well, I am ok with a migration if I can preserve my IP address.

About the I/O issues, the support agent just kept telling me that the problem is fixed, and then I throw again another example about how the situation is exactly the same.

        August 28, 2011 @ 11:38 pm | Reply
  39. And no where did I attempt to throw 123systems under the bus, the fact is when these plans were offered it was when we were reselling 123systems, this was in 2010 this post were pretty much in 2012… so if you are in our nodes I can almost assure that its because you were already migrated… now if your facing an issue and its on our box defiantly we will take a look into it and do everything to fix it.

Please let us know via ticket your issues so we can proceed.

    August 28, 2011 @ 11:41 pm | Reply
    • Dude, you just said your nodes are run much better then 123systems’s, that’s throwing them under the bus, never degrade your competition or providers in public.

      August 29, 2011 @ 1:07 am | Reply
      • I am not degrading them, its just what we have witnessed is complaints from users who are on 123systems boxes when we resold them. We are moving clients off of those boxes as they request due to poor performance so Im not sure how you wish for me to make it sound pretty?

        August 29, 2011 @ 1:48 am | Reply
        • Dustin,

Would you like to share some dd results, ioping results, uptime graphs, Network graphs, Or anything to back your claims? Otherwise you should probably not throw the blame on us and focus on fixing your own issues. (This does not mean go pull them from your own nodes as I will verify anything you post if it pertains to us)

Your client’s come here to complaint about the choppy service they have been receiving from you and rather than acknowledging their issue(s) you instantly blame us (123Systems). Obviously it is not the case here.

So again, Please focus on your own issues rather than throwing the blame where it clearly does not belong.

          Thanks!

        • Andrew,

Actually you know as well as I know I have been telling you which ips to terminate and this is before the clients billing period due, This is due to the complaints we receive on up time/io on your nodes… I have no intention of keeping these clients with you and this is why we do what we can to get these clients away from your nodes due to the many complaints.

As for up time/io graphs etc no I do not have these nor bother looking into it as we have no root to these servers since this is when we resold your vps product back in 2010.

Yes we can login to the clients vps using there root password on file if and yes again “if” they did not change it which mostly all customers change there passwords to a custom one so why bother attempting to login to a vps for some io stats/ up time stats etc when we can simply place them on a node that is our and that we manage fully. For the most part the clients who have moved from your (123systems) servers to ours are overall more happy.

Honestly rather than you telling me to focus on our own issues you should take your own advice, the whole reason I assumed yomero/selddog were on your nodes is because we never offered this special on our servers.. the only thing we have done is offer it on our nodes to existing clients who already had this plan when we resold your vps in 2010 how ever once again in attempt to get everyone off your servers due to complaints we offered them spots on our nodes with the same package which benefited both the clients and us due to more control and stable servers with less complaints. Yes we faced an issue with the node yomero is located on how ever its something that isn’t going to happen all in all its hardware and we do our best to keep things running smooth which I’m sure you do as well. I am not trying to bash your nor really trying to work with you or else I would have confronted you about it everytime there was a complaint..

I have before and you claim that the up time was fine and basically made it seem like they were isolated issues to the vps how ever its obvious with multiple complaints of people who were on your servers its not so isolated which once again I didn’t push nor bring it up anymore as we had/have a better solution for our client(s) and felt there was no reason to contact you further rather get these clients to an environment we controlled. Nor would I like to wait your 24 hr window for support responses.

Once again to clear things up this special was offered in 2010 when we resold your vps “123systems” so I think its clear as to why when a client posted a reply in a topic from 2010 and we are pretty much in 2012 I assumed they were located on your boxes when at that time we were reselling you guys… so please don’t mix it up like we are trying to toss you under the bus because I’m a true believer of never throw dirt on a competitor to look good which we clearly are not its only logical as to why I assumed these 2 clients were on your boxes.

Any how moving forward if anyone is facing issues just open a support ticket and flag it attention : Dustin and I will personally look into it.

          Thanks!

    • And I did it… got fast responses for my tickets, but nothing changed…

    • Current example

      $ dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k conv=fdatasync count=10k; rm test
      10240+0 records in
      10240+0 records out
      671088640 bytes (671 MB) copied, 48.6646 s, 13.8 MB/s

But the problem isn’t about the dd, is that the server feels sluggish

And getting worse day to day.

The first issue, is repeating month to month or sth like that, and was resolved again. But the second issue wasn’t

      • @Yomero, I have verified the server you are on is acting really sluggish.

I cannot find anything abnormal, I have contacted the dc for assistance and this will require the server to be taken offline for further investigation.

I will update your closed ticket once we find more information.

      • @Yomero

The dc has informed us that they have adjusted fan speeds and swapped the RAID card, performance appears to be better.

        [root@dime ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync

    • Probably the same node as Yomero as there was a reboot today (1.5 hours ago).

It’s somewhat better but still laggy on IO:

  42. @Sleddog,

  43. Ok, quick update.

I am in node 4 (normal $350 256MB plan), and is like crap. Supposedly some hardware was changed and so, but, is exactly the same:

    $ ./ioping -c10 .
    4096 bytes from . (simfs /dev/simfs): request=1 time=1814.3 ms
    4096 bytes from . (simfs /dev/simfs): request=2 time=51.5 ms
    4096 bytes from . (simfs /dev/simfs): request=3 time=300.0 ms
    4096 bytes from . (simfs /dev/simfs): request=4 time=84.2 ms
    4096 bytes from . (simfs /dev/simfs): request=5 time=61.2 ms
    4096 bytes from . (simfs /dev/simfs): request=6 time=13.0 ms
    4096 bytes from . (simfs /dev/simfs): request=7 time=55.4 ms
    4096 bytes from . (simfs /dev/simfs): request=8 time=4.9 ms
    4096 bytes from . (simfs /dev/simfs): request=9 time=7.7 ms
    4096 bytes from . (simfs /dev/simfs): request=10 time=21.7 ms

    --- . (simfs /dev/simfs) ioping statistics ---
    10 requests completed in 11420.9 ms, 4 iops, 0.0 mb/s
    min/avg/max/mdev = 4.9/241.4/1814.3/530.7 ms

    Also

    $ dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k conv=fdatasync count=10k; rm test
    10240+0 records in
    10240+0 records out
    671088640 bytes (671 MB) copied, 26.6814 s, 25.2 MB/s

So, I cancelled, Semoweb isn’t like before.
