LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

UptimeVPS - €3 1GB OpenVZ VPS in Scranton, France or Germany

Updated December 2011 — Well, Ken has switched to a different domain (UptimeVPS.co) and it is now not resolvable. Looks like the deals are too good to be true here.

UptimeVPS Ken from UptimeVPS pointed me to their October offer on WHT. For €3/month (~USD$4.02), you can get the following VPS:

  • 1024MB memory/1024MB vswap
  • 80GB storage
  • 800GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Sign up page. Payment in PayPal, Google Checkout, Moneybookers and AlertPay. On the WHT offer page it states that the service is available in either France with OVH (test IP: 87.98.184.76) or Germany with Hetzner (test IP: 176.9.37.252). However on the sign up page, Scranton in US is also an option. ~USD$4/month for a 1024MB OpenVZ node — that’s indeed quite cheap.

What interested me more, however, is their current special offers. €5/year (~USD$6.70) for a 128MB OpenVZ VPS?! By the time you click through the ordering link it actually shows up as €10/year (~USD$13.40) for 128MB memory, 128MB vswap, 10GB storage and 100GB/month data — which although is still cheap, it’s just comparable with yearly offers from other providers. 96MB got their reviews here, and from their previous offer here, people are sceptical but quite a few people are happy with the performance and service.

We’ll see how things turn out.

  1. Provisioning is fast like a lightning. I have paid and got the server at the same time. Will see how it works.

    Ordered one, setup was fast
However the invoice covers a period from 08/10/2011 – 29/10/2011 so it was only 2.03€. Payment in Paypal was done in British pound. Why is the invoice only till one day before their domain experies?

Despite you apparently are in LEB/LET a lot, seems that you don’t read too much.
This has been discussed several times, and seems that the domain is in auto renew.

The domain is at 1&1. I have several domains with them too. In 1&1 system there is no option to renew manually in advance, everything is automatically taken care of, unless you turn off auto-renewal. But yes the “registration-expiration: 30-Oct-2011” makes me nervous. Ken, please don’t run away. :)

As for the performance, my only complain so far is the disk I/O (~20MB/s now, ~35MB/s last night, us1@Scranton). It’s just too slow.

    • Not too bad. I really wish though that there was a way to dismiss that annoying chat javascript a lot of these providers use at the bottom right. Every time I go to another page on the site, it pops up yet again even though I have already dismissed it.

That’s not directed against UptimeVPS specifically. Just saying in general.

      No means No! :)

It’s really bad programming. A simple cookie set once the chat is dismissed should take care of it.

I think Minecraft is a more accurate test of performance than Unix Benchmark as it actually tests the real performance of the VPS, rather than just some theoretical values. Whats the point of having a VPS that has a great score in Unix Benchmark but can’t be used for anything?

At the same time, it isn’t.
With Minecraft, are you running vanilla or Bukkit?

Nevermind that comment, Memory leaking is very common on Minecraft. Better yet, if you run Minecraft, why use OpenVZ? Java + OpenVZ is a disaster. I learned this with AlienVPS, it just would leak and leak.

Better yet, Minecraft is single-threaded. You need a great clocked system (such as the i7-980x) to achieve really good performance. If you have the OVH servers (if they have the 2GB OVH servers, their highest CPU is a Dual-Pentium 2.00Ghz, which is just a nightmare for Minecraft) your likely to not see anything good.

Volumedrive had this issue awhile ago, with ubuntu AND debian. Minecraft just wouldn’t run. It really has nothing to do with performance.

I/O of Minecraft is outrageous. When idle, it abuses the Hard Drive anyway. No wonder some providers prevent the use of Minecraft servers.

Your not going to see any good Minecraft performance with a cheap 2GB VPS. There’s going to be ‘catches’ with it, and your only going to see mediocre or weak success. Our Server never improved until all of a sudden I went dedicated, got a lot more RAM, and tweaked the hell out of Java.

Minecraft just doesn’t consist as a test, because your using resources everywhere, even when it doesn’t allow you to ‘connect’.

In fact, if the seller is not “too” overselling, openvz would be ok for minecraft. At the same time, even Xen(or KVM to my knowledge, it might be wrong) can perform overcommitting of memories. So it all depends on the sellers’ direction of business.

However, it will be nightmare for seller if every client is deploying minecraft on their boxes, since minecraft eat up CPU/RAM/IO continuous and outrageously.

I think “dedicated” in OpenVZ only means that you won’t be accused of abusing resource if you keep your usage under your “dedicated” level continuous.

        • Ricky:

Well I won’t call minecraft a crap. If someone is able to build the same well-known sandbox game with better performance and utilizing multi-cores, minecraft is crap then.

Coding is much more difficult then you and I can imagine.

          @Ricky

Minecraft can work on a VPS, but its likely not to have the best performance.
Mainly because not due to the Virtualization (unless you completely are clueless that if you set RAM on a Debian to 1560 start and max at 2GB will only make you look stupid when your VPS is unreponsive) — but mainly due to equal share CPU.

A lot of the CPU usage is equally shared in a VPS enviorment, which is a killer for Minecraft. Minecraft wants complete dedicated resources, always. Not just the RAM or a specific requirement, but all sources of the system.

I’ve never seen a fully successful Minecraft 50+ slot server run on just a VPS, I tried, with a 40 Slot, and could never pass 15 due to CPU choking itself. It’s when I switched to dedicated that it managed to jump to about 70 at once until the little i3 choked too. Minecraft is not just RAM intensive, its HDD and CPU intensive to where people are being suspended for high usage in VPS’s.

Coding is entirely difficult. Learning Java for those plugins was quite hard, and I could only code basic ones. Since I left that gaming area of Minecraft, I haven’t even worked on coding. However I personally think developers of a game like it should really multi-thread the system. I’m having friends who have AMDs at 2Ghz Dual Core and it can’t play because the CPU sits at 100%.

I had faith in MC. Now, while they work on release, i’ll enjoy something else :).

I have been running a minecraft server on a 4G Xen VPS.
Things have been going well with +-15 people, no “cannot keep up” errors up till now.

However I agree that the CPU part is the main reason that VPS aren’t suitable for hosting MC server. It is eating >50% of the CPU time when my servers got loaded with +15 people, so I expected the lag situation when the number of players grow.

Really looking forward to a multi-thread supported version of MC too :)

  22. This is complete nonsense and the continuous claims that we’re going to do a runner is ridiculous. We’ve paid for our node(s ) and IP address allocations and to shoot down this claim even more, the server(s ) we have with BURST aren’t even included on that list.

The fact that SSL on both the sign-up page and the check-out page are only partially encrypted does not inspire confidence. This seems to be a trend among box vendors. Why don’t VPS vendors give the same attention to security that other ecommerce vendors provide? Is it too much to ask that the pages where you enter your personal info are indicated as secure in the browser?

  25. gsrdgrdghd:

Judging from my node (de2) which is located at hetzner.de i can guess that they don’t need to oversell (much).
My VPS has an Intel Core i7-950 (according to /proc/cpuinfo). The only thing close to that on the Hetzner site is a server with i7-920 and 24gb RAM for 59€/month. Without overselling they could put (almost) 24 boxes on that, which means 72€/month. I guess they have some special setup regarding disks (as 2 x 750 GB SATA 3 Gb/s HDD in Software-RAID 1 wouldn’t bring too much performance for VPSs).
Now given that they probably get some discount and oversell RAM like 50% or so the plan seems to be sustainable

    October 9, 2011 @ 10:29 pm | Reply
    • Christian:

Hetzner does not do any special setup. Their whole business model is based on preconfigured automated setups.

      October 10, 2011 @ 6:22 pm | Reply
      • You arrange for custom set ups. It will cost more and take some more days(weeks) to deliver.

We only have custom servers with Hetzner.

    • DG:

Then you factor in payment processing fees and costs for IP addresses, Hetzner just recently changed their whole IP pricing model…

BTW, I’m running a Linux server on DockStar at home just for fun. Even with that toy I secure it well like I set up an https reverse proxy for remote web access to some admin UIs (some of them don’t have an built-in https function). I even set up a real SSL certificate with a domain on DockStar so that all browsers can accept the certificate without warning. For higher security some ports even request SSL client certificate from user. I’m not showing off but just to say security should be the #1 concern.

  40. Tom:

If you get a root Server from Hetzner for 49 Euro/month (http://www.hetzner.de/en/hosting/produkte_rootserver/ex4), you will get this config:

    Intel® Core™ i7-2600 Quadcore
    16 GB DDR3 RAM
    3 TB HDD

IF we get 80Gb RAM, then it is 37,5 users but we count with 35 users/server then we have 200Gb HDD for RAM etc. 1 IP costs 0,8 Euro/month.

    So: 49 euro + 35*0,8 euro = 77 euro/month for 35 user => 2,2 euro/user/month, and we pay 3 euro/month. It is 28 euro/server/month profit. But paypal get 0,42 euro if we pay 3 euro. So it is then yust 11,4 euro/month/server profit.

BUT: I have i7 920 CPU, and this is an old config: Hetzner EQ4 Server
    8 Gb RAM
    750GB HDD
    49 euro/month
    9 users/server => 49/9+1=6,4 euro/server. So then how?

These guys just suspended one of my servers on the grounds that it contains illegal material.
The files on the server were transferred by SSH and are not used, they are no other open ports on it, no webserver, no email nothing.

I asked “Ken” to identify the said files and indicate HOW those files come to be identified as such, I have had no intelligent response from him. Even doing a simple thing such as turning on the server for such files to be identified, or even reinstalling seems to be beyond “Ken”

I took him on his generous offer of 80Gb and uploaded less than 20Gb on to it. It looks to me that his rampant overselling is starting to bite and he is looking for a way out.

We’ve stopped using Paypal and Paygol due to the amount of payments we process nothing suspicious about it what so ever.

Now sorry that i’ve not commented on a lot of acquisitions but feel it best to channel my energy’s into being productive and looking after customers with support, I recommend other providers to do the same.

I have done nothing wrong just a simple transition, sorry not everyone is happy about the outcome but its a way of life, some will be happy with peoples decisions and some not.

I’m 29 not getting much younger, I have commitments just like any other adult has, A flat, running costs of a car etc etc. It would be so stupid to run away and be left with nothing. This will work and continue to be successful.

What are you smoking? Crack? Weed? Meth? I think you need to get you some more. Obviously your FUCKING a bunch of people in your “simple transition”. Do you even read what you write? Quite honestly I do not care if you respond, what I do care about is the fact that any good business person would not offer a service with a specific payment method and without any notice just halt taking that payment method. For example, I have a recurring cable bill thats taken off my visa debit card, and I promise you if the establishment I am paying randomly, and without notice, told me they would no longer accept visa and wanted my money I would be upset with them too, and very quickly decide where my loyalty lies and find a new service. How do you plan to “continue to be successful” if your only looking out for your self and not the customers?

Ohh an it is VERY obvious your looking out for #1 (You) and not your customers in this move. This is a SERVICE business and your CUSTOMERS are the one who pay YOUR bills (or should, weather or not they do is your problem). I have to say I got a good chuckle out of this: “some will be happy with peoples decisions and some not”. Who do you think is going to be “HAPPY” with this move? Anyone? I highly doubt it.

If this is how you choose to run your business, you will not have to worry about running away to be left with nothing.

“Should you be unable to pay via these alternative methods, we ask to back up your
data and to submit a cancellation which with terminate on your next billing
anniversary.” == “If you do not wish to change, then you can go fuck your self.”

    Hello,

I have read trough the comments and reviews posted here. I think that most of you are wrong to assume that this company is going to be a runner, just because they have some startup difficulties and made some fundamental changes. Although I agree that a warning to stop accepting PayPal in advance would have been nice, as I am also having some problems with this change, but I do find it understandable that this company whishes to cut itself clean from fraudulent payments. I am now going to apply for a Moneybookers account to keep paying for my service. No harm done, just 10 minutes of my life gone, but luckily to a good cause!

I have had a VPS for half a month and everything has been great so far. The internet connection is very fast for it’s price range and the custom deal I have with UptimeVPS to suit my needs is working out terrific. UptimeVPS truly delivers a great service, much greater then you would accept from a VPS in this price range.
I think that people should stop being skeptical and should start enjoying their service. Finally a company that doesn’t take a profit margin of 30%! Ken’s plan is probably to go bulk, and gather a big customer base which would make up for a nice monthly profit. Nothing wrong with that! Very beneficial to the customer :)

As for the earlier Minecraft discussion, I think that the OP should have done some more research before trying to use Java with OpenVZ. Minecraft is very poorly coded, that is widely known, and that in combination with OpenVZ Java makes it worse. There is nothing UptimeVPS can do about this, it’s Mojang and Parallels problem to fix. Don’t kill the messenger! -> Don’t blame the supplier!

Ken, please continue offering your great service! People should stop moaning and start enjoying :)

Besides, most people use PayPal so its more beneficial to the company than anything.

Now with paygol i can understand, paygol mobile SMS payments fee like there is no tomorrow, and second i can never get the WHMCS module to work properly and mark the invoice as “paid”

I hope you overlook that PayPal decision

Not saying that this is the case but seems like when we see something like that around here, it’s not a matter of the provider dropping Paypal but Paypal dropping the provider.

Nah the actual question is how they can seriously claim to be providing 4gb RAM for 45€/year, which is like 4€/month.
Even the providers with 2gb ram for 7€ are having big problems but this is again double the RAM and half the price

        • paul:

Those other guys were using servers that needed special expensive ram… I used to work at a place that had a huge server cluster made of cheap-ass desktop hardware. Desktop ram is now under $5/GB and actual server ram (the right kind) is well under $10/gb. If you figure that cheap OVZ plans are usually overcommitted by at least 100% it means you’re getting $20 of physical ram in that plan, and 45€ is like $75 or some such. So it’s sort of believable, except the company’s other problems make me want to stay away, especially from yearly plans designed to slurp a lot of cash up front.

    Hello,
I am reading all the comments in this page and have some thoughts on the subject of this provider

WTF is wrong with you? You ‘predicted’ that this provider is going down so you registered a vps just so you can keep on bitching? If you don’t like the guy, just stop paying and find a better provider.

I have an account for 1gb ram for 3 euros a month. You know what? It is not the fastest vps around. Up until now it doesn’t even have very good uptime either but I’m paying 3 f*cking euros a month. If I needed a high availability server with multiple redundancy, I would search for a better provider.
And I don’t even believe that it will be bad forever, I really hope that it will get better and more stable, but if it doesn’t…well I will switch as my needs get more specific. If it goes down? Well I’m paying by the month and keep daily backups offsite, so I don’t care either.

PS: I’m not here to start a flamewar, I just say, give the benefit of the doubt to the guy or just use another provider

PS2: oh, and ken? Stop sending the spam about your offers, I don’t give a crap. I already have what I need.

Indeed. UptimeVPS provides mediocore quality for a low price. If you expect high quality, well, your not gonna get it. Also don’t predict that this company is going to be a runner. They have low prices to attract mass customers, they get a small profit margin from all and end up having a nice bit of extra cash at the end of the month.

The 4096 offer is great, I upgraded my VPS. So far all RAM I need is available, nothing. They might be overselling slightly, but as long as I don’t notice it, Im fine with it.

The fact that they want so much money upfront is probably because they want to make some upgrades, buy some new nodes for the long run.

The spam was a little excessive, yes, but I was very happy that he send an e-mail informing me that the 4096 offer is now also available as upgrade, instead of just a new offer.

One thing that I did notice though, was when I had my 2GB VPS, I logged into solusVM, and it showed only Memory: 1 GB, Burst: 4 GB. One little support ticket and it was fixed. This is probably the result of the fact that my order is custom, and because he had to create the VPS manually. Although, I’d check your SolusVM aswell if I where you, just to be sure ;)

I am glad PayPal is back! I was on the verge of getting a moneybookers account, It wouldn’t have been a problem, but I still rather use PayPal.

One last thing: Next time there is downtime I would like to be notified by e-mail when it starts, and when it’s over. My VPS was offline for a day, because I hadn’t noticed the downtime, and it didn’t automaticially reboot.

      • Didn’t hostrail do the same thing?

They had 8k+ clients active yet had a $20k bill they couldn’t fork.

Basing your business on a few pennies here/there is stupid. He sold a bunch of those yearlies on that gpay or whatever it was called and made a dollar gross profit on it – do you think that’s helping him pay his bills? It’s even worse if people paid him yearly prices (5EUR – 10EUR/y) with it since he got hit for even more cash on it.

Maybe he was able to find a way to stabilize himself but as his prices continue like this (even if they don’t drop anymore), he’s scaring a lot of people away because of failrail and the likes being just a couple months back.

  68. I am wondering what’s about dedicated servers with 24GB of RAM, and 2TB of HDD for low cost? They can split each other to 48 slices of a VPS with “2GB” of RAM, and ofcourse – so many GB of HDD. Me my self had a personal dedicated server at price of no more than 3 medium LEB’s. So what’s the point? Why you just stop looking at the peoples pocket?
If I want to start VPS Business – there a plenty of providers with “offers” to make a little to medium profit and to stay in business as long as I want to.

1&1 is indeed hard to deal with. I assume they had a “free” domain included in certain 1&1 plan but later had trouble to transfer it out or something.

But it sounds even more weird if they were using a “free” domain.

Why does that sound weird? They saw a nice offer that happened to include a free domain, they took it. A company wants to save as much as the little ones to you know.

Either stay with 1&1 forever or lose your “free” domain. I thought it’s common sense but seems not everybody knows that. Even for paid domains you must always pay attention to them. 1&1 is really tricky.

I found today that my VPS had been suspended and also I have no access to the client area anymore. The reason for the suspension was “non payment” with a due date of 00/00/0000. I just yesterday extended my already paid month for another 4 months, thus changing my payment to quaterly. At the same time I also ordered and pre-paid 2 more VPS of which one was pre=paid for a full year. I sent them almost 100 Euros per PayPal and as a result, not even one day later, I get suspended and the VPS I use switched off. On that VPS resides one domain with a site I am currently developing i.e. there is no possible scenario for any other reason of my suspension then pure neglegence or fraud on their end.

You make a company look bad for doing nothing wrong, an error probably popped up somewhere causing the VPS to go offline. My friend’s WHCMS SolusVM controls didn’t work, he sent in a ticket and ten minutes later it was fixed.

I ordered a VPS from them to test, all was good. Then came all the changes: To .co, no PayPal – PayPal back. Then the receipient in PayPal changed. I noticed that yesterday, when I ordered 2 more VPS, one quaterly and one yearly and also prepaid my first VPS +4 months, making it also quaterly.

This morning when I came online, I saw my VPS (the first one, the others I didn’t put to use yet) was OFFLINE and my access to the client are was blocked and their emails sales@uptimevps.co and support@uptimevps.co bounced (they never bounced before). It is a WHCMS database error, those are extremely hard to fix, and not the companies fault.

Since the WHCMS backend is still working, the module that connects SolusVM and WHCMS together will most likley still suspend your VPS, Ken can’t stop this unless he completely removes the module, which would then create even worse problems.

Hang in there! Your VPS will be back online soon!

I thought that only happened to me but looks like everybody had the same issue. Maybe that was due to I used too much space (60~70GB) and was trying to backup? I have the 4GB/250GB plan so it was not abuse. If it’s oversold then that’s another story.

Well, it’s called UptimeVPS… So you get at least “some Uptime” haha (if it wouldn’t be sad, it would almost be funny – I can see the refund requests / disputes / chargebacks coming in soon if they don’t solve this)

Joke: Maybe when they took away the “m” from uptimevps.com they took away some more HAHA (it’s called sarcasm, what else can you do)

  93. I’d be far more concerned with the proof/etc that they’re running a nulled copy of WHMCS.

Francisco, seriously? Why in the world would that concern me more than my server being down? Your comment doesn’t make sense. Sure it’s not the way to go to use a non-authorized WHMCS (if so), but again, that’s their problem, not mine/ours.

Or hey, maybe you Francisco are the only one being more concerned about your suppliers internal issues than getting your product? ;-)

I thought so.. Got ya ;)

    • gsrdgrdghd:

I think there are things that could concern you more than your VPS being down.
For example the data you stored on the server (scripts, databases, backups, etc) being stolen. The host already “stole” WHCMS.

      November 6, 2011 @ 11:15 pm | Reply
    • It should be yours because nulled copies normally have backdoors to lift databases. Are you paying by credit card? Your VM down is also important, but the fact the license isn’t paid for could shed some light on things :)

If a host can’t afford $10/m for WHMCS then that sounds extremely iffy for sure.

The biggest concern I have with uptimevps is how they were taking pre-orders for their .NL VPS nodes. They said the nodes/VPS would be up on November 3rd. It is the 6th, almost 7th and there is no VPS being delivered.

I will post here when they actually deliver the vps, but it isn’t looking good. I’d recommend people stay away from the .NL offer for now.

Nope they still have not given me my .NL VPS. I am going to be filing a paypal complaint soon
and hopefully we can get enough users together to cause problems for his new paypal account.

I was thinking of calling paypal and providing them with the information of his old paypal and
the new one and let them know the connection between the two and how he is taking payments and
        not delivering.

Shouldn’t be. Having no VPS at all means that every cent is too much, so would good is it then?

The fun with MY case was that my access was completely shut off due to non-payment, when just a day before I pre-paid an already paid VPS for 4 months i.e. 1 year.

From my last email to “Ash”:
“You really have a lot of nerve. Not to mention the apology that never came.
I paid you almost 100 Euros for 3 total VPS and the very next day, I wake up to my production VPS being SUPENDED and DOWN and my login to the client area BLOCKED. Then, when I emailed you on exactly THIS email address you are using right now, my emails came back bounced.

After hours of waiting and nothing happening, I then went ahead and filed the complaints on the payments I had made not even 24 hours before.

But of course … you have no understanding whatsoever and cannot find anything wrong on your end. It is all MY fault, right?”

There is no reply button under your posts Ashley, but seriously, we are way past talking, and pretending not to know me doesn’t work – people at LEB are not that stupid.

My advice: Get your stuff together, spend more time fixing your issues instead of trying to find issues with other hosters – what is the point of spending your time this way anyway? If you know your own service sucks (pardon me, but that’s the right word IMHO), you should focus on that and disappear from here. Reading forums doesn’t get anything solved, period.

Enough said, just don’t like it when people that can’t get their own issues solved try to find issues with others instead of working on their own. That’s just.. Can’t even find the right word for it.

Anyway, everybody crossing fingers our test-boxes come online again, and if not, whatever :) We knew it before ;)

I said I don’t talk to you anymore, did that (tried) for over a month like you know (or maybe not, because you have lots of issues with customers and many have my firstname – in that case, OUCH…) and it was only a waste of time.

Grow up & work on YOUR business, nobody wants your “detective work”, nobody asked you to “be proud it was you”, you are making a fool out of yourself.

(sooo many people called Mike having problems with you is really sad)

Consider this my last response, this is childish, he/she should jut go away and pad his shoulder for “exposing working WHMCS licenses” somewhere else.

Ashley, please check what website you’re posting on. I don’t think you have any right to boss people around. Rather rude as well. From past history, that’s probably the quickest way to have no more of your offers posted here as LEA doesn’t take those types of comments too lightly.

As to not finding the ticket, do you mean you’ve done this to more than just a few clients? I would think that they would stick out in your memory. Unless of course you’ve done this multiple times.

          November 8, 2011 @ 1:20 am | Reply
        • Im not bossing anyone around i simply asked for a ticket so i can look into this situation :) I hardly think its fair that a client can write stuff about our company with no proof to back up his claim’s?

And no this has not happend multiple time’s, what im saying is i recall no falling out or issues with anybody called Mike. So im saying that either he is making this entire scenario up or he was registered with a different name. Come to think of it now he has mentioned the part about A i think i know who he is & he was certainly not registered as Mike.

If it is who i think it his, he seemed to have a problem with us suspending/terminating his VPS for non-payment and tried to blame us because he was on vacation.

          @Robert

We only have a monthly payment option, so how you pre-paid for any length of time is beyond me. Can you provide any client ID/Ticket emails.

EXCUSE ME???? We were talking in emails about me ordering a 2nd VPS and making it QUATERLY and ordering a 3rd VPS and paying YEARLY cause it was in the new location and about moving my first VPS from monthly to QUATERLY, so I don’t have to pay for it every month. You then sent me a modified invoice, to pay up + 3 months for the first VPS. I paid everything, almost 100 Euros in total.

I am not acting weird. Sorry but why is an alleged employee or owner of a COMPETITOR company here and sorting UptimeVPS’s issues. Why is an alleged employee or owner of a COMPETITOR company here at ALL to begin with. Comme on now …

Anyway, it doesn’t even really matter, cause this thread IS about UptimeVPS and what I posted is also about UptimeVPS, for I have been a customer of UptimeVPS.
Fact is, that I rented a VPS for 3 weeks to test the service and then I paid almost 100 Euros to prolong that VPS to quaterly payment and in order to buy 2 more. After payment, just the next day, my VPS were downed and my access to the client area and Solus CP blocked/terminated. According to their email this was due to NON-PAYMENT … so what are we talking about here??

Emails got first bounced, then ignored, while everything I paid almost 100 Euros for was still down and blocked. Only after I filed PayPal complaints AND threatened to issue chargebacks if the complaints are unsuccessful, I got a reply and a refund. For the month that was still running and paid for, I did NOT get a refund, just FYI.

Domain changes from .com to .co, bounced emails, suspensions without merit, now day long outages, a nulled WHMCS even … what else?? Seriously.

        • Robert..

I was not here sorting any of their issues, i was actually pointing out/clarifying another issue. A invalid WHMCS license.

Eitherway, no apology from you? Say’s a lot about you as a person.

As long as we are clear that i AM NOT a thief and your accusations have nothing to do with my company then i am happy.

As I said, my “beef” is with UptimeVPS and I never stated otherwise. THIS THREAD is about UptimeVPS, and ‘it’ never stated otherwise naturally.

So if you are really not affiliated with UptimeVPS, then what is your problem? It does not concern you then.

And that been said, I find it highly wrong for you to spend your time picking on a competitor, no matter how crappy that competitor is. So what are you doing here anyway?? We are (former) UptimeVPS customers, so what is YOUR excuse?

You post here, without having ANYTHING to do with the issues discussed here and you also have a name similarity with the person responsible for UptimeVPS and you are the only one posting here and you show a very vast interest in UptimeVPS’s stuff. So what should I apologize for?

And excuse me, but the way you behave and “talk” holds a striking resemblance to the “Ash” from UptimeVPS I corresponded with … what did you expect??

        • Fran mentioned the WHMCS license, i backed him up. Its on-topic and related to uptimeVPS and im sure most customer’s would appreciate knowing the facts. And the only resemblance i have is the same name..

Forget i said anything, this conversation has already gone on way longer than it should have. Your clearly pissed at UptimeVPS so everybody else must be in the wrong. Lets end this conversation now :)

On the issues regarding node Charlie:

    Dear Customer

We have had notification from OVH regarding the on going issue.

We have had the following response from them.

As per our response to several customers this is completely out of hour hands otherwise it would of been resolved a lot quicker.

Given the issue, I have asked them to wiz the hard disk out and place it into another machine. We are awaiting response of this.

    From : Monitoring IPMI

The IPMI module of ns224427.ovh.net was detected as
defective and must be replaced and reconfigured
by our team. To perform this intervention,
it will be necessary to cut service to your server.

This module is necessary to restart your server hardware
as well as the KVM over IP option.
    Until this is repaired, you
    cannot reinstall your server.

Without response from you, the intervention will be
performed within 10 days of sending this

In the movie The Ring, it was only 7 days, maybe you should get a VPS from THEM xD Sorry but I could not resist (SCNR).

I think though that this was just a copy of the email THEY got from OVH. It means that if THEY do not order the replacement now, OVH will do it on their own in 10 days.

In my opinion, as much as I know OVH can be slow at things, I doubt Uptime does all they could to get the issue fixed. Deflecting blame on OVH is not good practice customer-wise, they should own the issue and deal with it (over 60H downtime since the issue started, all this for a defective IPMI module?!).

In all forums about Webhosting I know, exactly THIS (posting of competitors in threads of other companies) is forbidden … for good reason.

You already almost made an enemy today by causing a misunderstanding. Had I been convinced in the end, that you ARE affiliated with UptimeVPS I might have deployed my 198Gbit Botnet by now and sent traffic your way …. just to wake awareness in you that this is not a game and if you mess with other peoples business, you might as well suffer the ramifications at some point for doing so. They are still up cause they refunded and the issue is not as significant anymore, as to loose any sleep over. Don’t see it as a threat, I am just telling you openly what can happen to people that piss other people off. You do not listen to reason, so one has to bring the reason to your understanding otherwise. You are annoying and you are confusing this thread, while as per your own words it does not concern you. So either you are pushing some agenda or you are really not the brightest. All I did is make it clear to you that some people, among them admittedly ME, do not take this kind of bullshit and if it hits the fan, then actions might be taken. Of course AFTERWARDS you will be wiser but then it is already too late. As I said, if you need enemies, then keep on doing what you are doing.

Ken hasn’t dissapeared, tickets still get answered pretty darn fast.

He just doesn’t want to spent his time talking about what is mostly hearsay, or fix problems trough this thread. He rather spents his time answering support tickets and managing the company.

If I say that he ignore .nl related issues and you’re saying that he don’t one of us lie. But as you’re pretty much unknown here and you appeared everytime only to speak on behalf of Ken, liar is most likely you. Please make as a favour – don’t talk in Kens name anymore. He have more than enough chances to either reply here, either tu support tickets. His aliases (ash, lee…) don’t count!

Well somebody has to stick up. Remember it is always the minority that has problems that post.
I have seen some people posting that they had no problems, but they leave it there and their message is pretty much ignored.

I think that the discussion should not come from one way. Problems I don’t have information about (such as nulled WHCMS) I won’t reply to, but sometimes I open a low priority support ticket to ask Ken about some of the general concerns that have been stated here.

Almost always I then relay that answer here, adding my own personal experience to it.

Also I am not talking AS Ken, but like most of you, I am talking ABOUT him. He personally (trough a ticket) told me he rather spents time on support tickets then here when I asked him why he hasn’t been actively defending himself here anymore.

Further if you look more up this thread you see a ton of hearsay and probably, which are all obviously negative comments. I tend to reply to hearsay from the other side. For example you say when there is a delay in response to support tickets “He has probably taken our money and now ran off with it.” then I say “He is probably busy answering support tickets.”

          See my point?

I know it is suspicious when there is always one poster providing positives in a problem thread, because it is rare. But I feel the need to share what I know, and what my experiences are just like you do.

Don’t worry, if I have any problem with him I will post that aswell, honesty above all ;)

          Mastermind,

most people here take into account that for every bad review, there are 9 good ones which are not voiced.

Places like these are not to hear about how good a host is. “No news is good news”, simply.

When so many issues come together, the picture is clear and it does not matter that most people are (still) happy with them. They soon won’t be anymore ..

        • Spirit:

Well the fact is, that he can’t provide Netherland VPS neither he refund those which pre-paid them. All refund request tickets are ignored/unanswered.

The fact is also that french node charlie is down more than half week, just like before was down few days nodes alpha and bravo. It’s not few hours, it’s not half day, it’s not one day… but few days already. That’s far under standards of hosting industry even for cheap low end box.
While my expectations regarding this host wasn’t really big (infact I expect that he won’t survive till summer 2012) and I expected that it will sux… I can confirm now, uptimevps sux. I am not angry or something – it would be very dumb to have some serious big expectations regarding this host and I merely report issues.

Yes there have been problems and we are getting to the bottom of them.

Of course, the majority like to make a fuss and the law of averages are for every 1 compliant there was 10 who are happy but don’t feel the need to get involved.

If you really knew the scale on what UptimeVPS works on you would be a bit more clear on the averages and could do the maths.

Loads of people have thrown dates into a death pool and are pleased to say we are still here. So the Joke is on those who ever made those statements.

I’m not going anywhere as I’ve said before. Would be utterly stupid to throw 72 hours worth of work down the drain EACH AND EVERY OTHER DAY. Besides I want a new house and BMW. Work towards your goals and never give up in life is my attitude. I can’t help what other peoples outlooks on life are.

I was suckered into purchasing a VPS with UptimeVPS as well. I was hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

I *knew* something was wrong when I stopped getting the annoying marketing emails and an email about “Node Charlie” (with the explanation that “I have asked them to wiz the hard disk out and place it into another machine”) on November 7, 2011

WTF is “wiz the hard disk out”?

Anyway, it is November 14, 2011, can’t reach VPS, can’t reach SolusVM, don’t have any way to contact “Ken” or Support (since all emails come from a “noreply” address).

Oh well, thankfully this is not paid automatically; I would love to see them attempt to bill for any more service.

    November 14, 2011 @ 11:54 am | Reply
    • One of my two VPS is located on the Charlie node. So I know that is not fake problem. On November 5 I’ve asked them why my VPS since a morning goes down and up and again and again (~ every 5-30 mins) I’ve got an answer “We are currently having power supply issues with that node, we are working with OVH to get this fixed however support is limited due to the weekend.”.
About “to wiz the hard disk out and place it into another machine”. You can read this like “extract the node’s hard disk from the broken machine and temporary plug it into another (non-broken) machine”, because customers prefer alive VPSes than dead :-)
      I hope it is clear.

So I opened a dispute since one of mine was never even delivered – they quickly claimed it was delivered to paypal so I emailed the person who confirmed and they responded asking for an update/information/etc:

    Ash ashleyjmcrules@yahoo.co.uk
    1:02 PM (0 minutes ago)
    to me
    Hi,

I left UptimeVPS 1-2 weeks before this happened. I am sorry to hear about this and I am not in control of payments or refunds. I hope you get your money back.”

    • danielfeng:

That’s not true. At least on Nov 11 Ash issued refund after PayPal claim was filed, and also responded to ticket regarding this refund request. I think now everything is clear: they are hoping to minimize PayPal disputes/claims with 45-day period. They won’t issue any refund unless you file claim.

      GAME OVER.

I emailed Ash back asking why, if he is no longer there, did he confirm with paypal that my dispute claim is invalid and the service was delivered, his response was:

        Hello,

As I said I am not in control of payments or refunds. I can confirm I left on the 3rd of November.

Paypal closed my dispute quickly. They are unable to decide in my favor and encourage me to work with the seller. Fat chance since he’s obviously a runner. When I submitted the claim the confirmation page said the seller was unable to respond. Not sure why, possibly paypal removed their account. Maybe someone else can confirm the same message.

Anyway I only filed to add fuel to the fire. I don’t really care about $6. I almost made two months…and learned a valuable lesson in return.

Erm that might encourage new runners around to create some fancy vps site, with fancy promise and fancy specs. It is still quite frustrating to see the many who trolls on really serious providers and exits when they grab all the fame / trust. Sucks!

      • rkrazy:

Are you calling me a troll?

I filed my dispute knowing that I wouldn’t have any chance to win. I purchased 43 days ago and from my understanding most of these type of disputes go to the provider anyway. However, I did it anyway to join what I assume/hope is a legion of others with the hope that as a whole we would accomplish something.

2011-Nov-13 – Buyer: Complaint Case filed

    Status
We’re unable to decide this claim in your favor at this time. PayPal’s Buyer Complaint Policy applies to the shipment of goods but not to disputes about merchandise quality.

    What happens next
We encourage you to work directly with your seller to resolve this matter.

Anyway, I am lucky that I get back my Euro 10 for Germany node weeks ago. At that time, service tickets were still being processed. I will be very careful with such incredible GOOD plans from a newcomer in future.

        • Much like the cake, the overselling claim is a lie.

$18/m and $10 of that will go to solus, so where they’re getting these $8/m 8GB boxes is a whole other ball game :)

        • Who said about 8 GB dedicated RAM?? And who said about $18??
It is only 4 dedicated GB for $20/month.

About overselling. Of course I cannot be responsible for top-level providers! I talk ONLY about MYSELF actions!
Stop flood and check this: http://ipap.co/main/en/vps_reseller
And I DON’T say that THEY have no oversell.
I only have CALCULATED their cheapest price for 8 VPS with my own money risk.

About SolusVM, I guess they will charge only $2.5/month (look at slave license: http://www.solusvm.com/pricing.php)

We can also take a second offer – RAM: 1024/2048 MiB, HDD: 250 GiB, BW: 3 TB, 2 IPv4, SolusVM, Location: USA for $5/month, and expected 7 people excluding me.

If someone think that I am not enough honest, then that body can go to the hell! :-)

  152. Hi everybody. I am their customer since begin of September. No problems at all till now!
Definitely something happened on November 11 (Friday), because I had submitted a support ticket at evening Nov 11, and did not get a respond (usually they answered in less than hour or even in few minutes!) and their website was still alive. At Monday (Nov 14) their website was gone as well as Charlie node (France,OVH) where one of my VPSes is located. Another one VPS (German) still works perfectly. As the customers know the Charlie node had a hardware issue (something about power supply), so the data center staff (OVH) said that after detailed research the node was marked as defective and they will fix (probably replace) it in 10 days and it was November 7. So, I still believe that all will be fine.
But I really don’t know what happened with Ken and other guys from UptimeVPS. It is horrible because I liked these guys. I still do not want to believe that they are scammers.

      • I am serious, I just always believe in people are good till they prove opposite. But not all people are people! ;-) There are also creatures, their main idea is “If you lie once people catch you, but if you lie always nobody catch you that you lie.”
Since I’ve got another people experience I agree with you, but I still cannot say 100 %, because I did not see enough number of live evidences by MY OWN eyes! Everybody should to check by their-selves before have trust in.
Anyway I am VERY happy for that lesson! I’ve became stronger! :-P
So, tell me How can I don’t love “people” like Ken, if they are good teachers for me?

        With love from Russia!

  155. My OVH node is down as well but not the de one (node4).
The uptimevps.com domain seems to have expired and taken over by domain collector.

The registrar domain information shows that the host their own DNS: http://whois.co/?usr_lang=en

But no DNS glue is provided for the DNS IP servers on the website, but here is a copy http://www.dailychanges.com/uptimevps.co/ ns1 is not running DNS server, and ns2 has a routing loop:

    $ traceroute 213.239.220.62
    [...]

     5 static.213-239-220-41.clients.your-server.de (213.239.220.41) 2.694 ms 2.658 ms 2.632 ms
     6 213-239-220-33.clients.your-server.de (213.239.220.33) 3.965 ms 3.411 ms 3.471 ms
     7 static.213-239-220-41.clients.your-server.de (213.239.220.41) 2.688 ms 2.656 ms 2.741 ms
     8 213-239-220-33.clients.your-server.de (213.239.220.33) 3.795 ms 3.757 ms 3.843 ms
     9 * * *
    10 213-239-220-33.clients.your-server.de (213.239.220.33) 3.324 ms 3.273 ms 3.180 ms

    ns1 is running Debian/Ubuntu.

Maybe they got the money and ran off with it… Way to many things have gone wrong in a space of couple of days for this not to be very suspicious.

I don’t get how you people file your Disputes.
I have disputed like said, under Computer Hardware/Software, and that dispute got denied aswell.
I happen to know several people who have disputed successfully, even when selecting the object as a online service, so I sent an e-mail to PayPal. They told me that they couldn’t look into my claim because it wasn’t a physical object sent trough the mail.

So why can you people dispute, but not me? Does PayPal hate me?

      Hey Mastermind,
you can defintely get it successfully disputed…I was one of the early ones, I knew this company was trouble after one day! lol I asked for a refund and they didn’t oblige so I filed a paypal complaint… you have to file it as a digital service

      November 17, 2011 @ 1:02 pm | Reply
      • Mastermind:

I filed one as digital service and one as Computer Hardware and then stated I had remote access to it.
Both got instantly denied, so I sent out and e-mail asking why. (It’s in Dutch so I can’t copy it here) but they basically said it is only for products that are physically sent trough the mail.

Maybe the terms differ per region?

        November 17, 2011 @ 1:12 pm | Reply
        • My understanding is that you have to state that you never received any service. Those seem to be going through.

Of course the provider could say that the service was provided I guess. Never done one myself.

I filed as I never received and I too was denied. I also appended the sellers email to my dispute stating that he “hoped I get a refund” – and paypal still rejected. I’d charge back but this was the one time I used my account balance by mistake :( Oh well.

Heck, somebody I know put it as a service and got refunded.

I would say so, or call it “regional discrimination”. They know not everybody in the world is able to perform a charge back. It is known for years that PayPal hire and train monkeys working for them to lower the cost.

“Stephen McKiernan” had answered in 1 day (even less), but I don’t know what he said (what’s the mystery!?). After 5 days (Nov 17-22) of “thinking” PayPal said:
“We have concluded our investigation into this case. Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to decide this claim in your favor.”
Indeed I guess they did not think a lot. I think danielfeng is right they do not investigate anything, just let the matter rest. Fu**ing monkeys :-)

    Hello folks,

I have contact Google Wallet a week ago and i told them about this issue.

    They said:

Please allow the seller five full business days from the date of this
email to resolve this issue. Business days do not include weekends or
holidays. If you do not receive a resolution or an update within five
business days, please make us aware of the pending issue.

So after 5 business days no mail from UptimeVPS.

    Google said:
We no longer allow UptimeVPS to process orders using Google Wallet. As your account shows that you have already been charged for this order, we have issued you a refund to the credit card used to place this order.

Refunds can take up to an additional three business days to appear on your
    credit card statement.

So i am happy now i get my 40pound back!!!

    Thanks Google

I have 2 VPS services on uptimevps. Both under 45 days limitation. I opened a dispute on paypal on both.On first, I claimed I never received a product (service) and on second one I claimed it as a fraud.
On both, I got the same answer from Paypal. They say we know he screwed you up but unfortunately we refund only physical items:
“We need to let you know that that we didn’t accept your claim, as the item
you had bought was either, virtual, digital, or intangible, and thus wasn’t
    covered by PayPal’s buyer protection.”

Paypal sucks!!! I wish Google checkout will take on their business and become a real, fair competitor.
So what if I didn’t buy physical item? Why do we need paypal at all for virtual goods??The best is to pay with your CC and if there is a fraud like in this case, you simply ask for your money back.

PayPal always lies. For example, if you pay for something in different currency, PayPal will automatically convert (plus fees) the amount to your currency. But, right before you pay, PayPal will warn you that if you use credit card, you might be charged 3% foreign transaction fee by your credit card company. THAT IS FRAUD. Basically the amount has been converted by PayPal to your local currency, plus their fees already, so you are just paying in your own currency. You will never be charged fees by your credit card. But PayPal always lies, misleading people to use their bank account directly. They just want to save on transaction fees themselves. They don’t care if you get better protection or not (and they do prefer you don’t use your credit card to avoid future charge back on them).

@danielfeng With regard to currency fees, they may be right. IIRC I’ve been charged fees by my CC company although the amount was converted in € (but not from the eurozone).

UrgentVPS is bullshit. I had a VPS there, and we made a deal that they would cut off my server when there was bandwidth overusage. I came under DDoS and they “forgot” to turn it off. I had a 200 Euro overusage bill. When I didn’t pay because I found it was bullshit they started sending written letters by lawyers to my house, forcing me to pay or they’d sue me.

      I eventually paid.

      December 3, 2011 @ 12:11 pm | Reply
      • You should not have to pay them. It was blackmail!
Eventually you had to spend a little part of Your 200 Euro to order DDoS attack to their own websites. To give a right “answer”. Such people understand only such actions. Better spend money for a punishment of motherf***ers than pay for a “peaceful” outcome. Even better spend all 200 Euro for long time DDoS than just present that money to assholes. For me justice more important than peace. For example, if someone want to rape your wife, will you stay in peace? Of course, NO! And so on.

If you have a proof about your deal you are able to win the case in the court and even more you are able to sue them because of blackmail.
