Read ’em and weep, folks. That smooth 7% curve is what Verisign has planned for .com owners. As DomainNameAPI.com notes:
Verisign, the registrar of the .COM domain extension, on 1 September 2021 increased the wholesale price it charges registrars for .COM registrations and renewals from $7.85 to $8.39. In September 2022, it will increase the price from $8.39 to $8.97.
We’re speculating that the 7% increases will continue forever, but it’s Verisign, so…
Consider that if a .com costs $8.97 today and prices go up 7%, by 2030 it’ll cost $15.49/year. (Actually, it comes out to $15.41, but Verisign seems like the kind of folks who will happily round up).
It’s a nice business when your marginal costs is $0 and you can raise prices at will.
