LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

Versaweb - $49 12GB RAM Dual Xeon L5420 in Las Vegas, Nevada

Rob, from Versaweb, got in touch with us a few weeks ago to list a dedicated server offer they were running at the time on WebHostingTalk. However it quickly sold out, so the offer was never published. Anyway these are now back in stock but are extremely limited in numbers.

Dual Intel Xeon L5420 Dedicated Server

  • Dual Xeon L5420
  • 12GB DDR2 ECC Memory
  • 500GB SATA Hard Disk
  • 5 IPv4 Addresses / Private VLAN
  • 10TB Bandwidth
  • 1000Mbps Port Speed
  • $49 Per Month
  • $139 Per Quarter ($46 per month + free upgrade to 24GB RAM)
  • Order Link
  • Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

With 12GB RAM, or 24GB if you pay quarterly, these servers are not exactly ‘LowEnd’ except for price. Still, I thought the offer was worth sharing. Versaweb were founded in 2006 and is an IT services provider specializing in managed and unmanaged dedicated hosting services for small and medium business across the US and around the world. “Rob” also happens to be the founder and Vice President of FiberHub, formerly VegasNap, who operate a 14,000 square foot datacenter in Las Vegas. Once your order has been verified by their billing department, your server should be online within 1-2 business days – in many cases, they will even have your server up the same day.

Versaweb do not offer refunds and if you decide to cancel you must give at least 5 days notice or you will be billed for the next month. They accept most major credit cards (Visa, MC, Discover, Amex) as well as Paypal payments. They also accept wire transfer payments but only for amounts over $500. IRC services of any kind – clients, servers, bots, etc are strictly prohibited on their network. For further information, you may want to view their Terms of Service & Acceptable Use Policy.

Network Information:

Servers are housed at the Fiberhub datacenter in Las Vegas, Nevada.

  1. Rob!

    What’s pricing on;
    Extra Disks? $x
    RAID Card? $x
    BBU? $x
    RAM Upgrades? $x
IP prefixes? $x I see it’s ¢50 an IP on the site but if I got say a /26 would it be cheaper like $20 or something?

    Thanks!

    Hello LEB peeps!

This is Versaweb’s first offer here on LEB – normally we concentrate on higher-end services, so it’s great to finally have something to offer here. A couple of answers to questions I’ve been seeing –

1 – This offer is valid only while supplies last. We have about 20 of these left in stock, but once they are gone, it could be a week or a month before we have more in stock, if ever.

2 – You won’t find this deal advertised on our website, so be sure you use the order link here on LEB to place your order.

3 – Our web order form has many options for upgrades – SSD’s, bigger disks, etc. Just hit the order link and you can use our order form to customize your server.

4 – You can review pricing for additional IP’s at http://www.versaweb.com/ip-request.php. Typically we limit the number of IP’s to 64 per server.

5 – Our billing is pro-rated so your services will renew on the 1st of each month. Depending on what part of the month your order is placed, you may pay less than a full month for your first invoice, you may pay more than a full month on the first invoice. Our order form calculates the pro-rated total automatically, and will also show you what your regular monthly invoice will be as well.

    Thanks!

  5. OK everyone, here’s what I’m thinking: if 7 of us pitched in 20 bucks, we could get one of these quarterly with 24GB RAM. Then we could subdivide it in to 7 VPSes, each with ~3.3GB RAM, with some left over. 3GB for $20/quarter, or $5/month! Who’s in?

I’d be interested in this as well but here’s my 2 cents. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time but there’s a trust issue in the sense that it might be hard to get that many people to reliably pitch in (and how do you know that somebody’s not going to cause DMCA issues). My biggest concern would be HDD performance, although that’s enough ram that people might be able to just create RAM disks for cache purposes. The price only includes 5 IPs so people would either have to share or the better option is to get someone like “dave” below who mentioned half the server at $25 a month. Allowing 1GB of RAM for dom0 (that might be overkill?) then the breakdown could be: $139/quarter –> 1x $25/mo 11.5GB of RAM, 4x $5.34/mo 2.87GB RAM (I think your original math might have assumed 4 months in a quarter). I’m assuming that 1 IP can be shared between dom0 and a vps?

  8. Seraphin69:

@D.Strout : that would be more expensive than that with hardware raid, multiple disk and decent disk space for that power.

$146/m without hardware raid on 2x1TB disks (low I/O on sta)
    $226/m on SSDs

but the idea of sharing the cost is nice

    • 500GB/7=70GB + ~10GB left for overhead. That’s plenty of capacity; as to performance, that could be a concern, but I don’t do I/O heavy stuff with my servers. Finally, for redundancy, again: a concern, but I can do my own backups on my local computers. This idea might not be for everyone, but I bet there are 7 people out there that might be interested.

  11. Rob runs a nice operation :)

I paid his location a visit when I took the guys to Vegas.

Rob was really nice and welcoming, even though the 4 of us just barged in through the front door and freaked out Betty. The DC is very clean physically and well organized. It has easy access if you’re needing to drop off a bunch of servers like we will be doing and prices are fantastic.

We spent a good 20 – 30 minutes in his Meet-Me-Room just talking about networking and such and you can really tell that he enjoys this line of work and wants to improve everywhere he can.

Can’t wait to see abovenet in the network and definitely can’t wait for this weekend :)

We are now out-of-stock on our Dual Xeon L5420 dedicated servers with the free 24GB RAM upgrade for quarterly payments. We are offering a reduced-price upgrade for future orders placed on a quarterly basis ($30/qtr).

Here are answers to a few other questions:

Q: Is there any charge for OS re-install?
A: We offer 1 free OS reinstall every 30 days. You may not request a free OS reinstall until you have had your server for at least 30 days.

Q: What hardware are you using?
A: These servers are all Supermicro-based systems.

Q: What SSD’s are you using?
A: We use primarily Intel, Mushkin, or Samsung SSD’s, but it really depends on stock.

Q: Can you reserve these servers?
A: Sorry, but these are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Q: Do these servers have IPMI?
A: No, these servers do not have IPMI. We do offer free IP KVM use (within reason).

    Q: Is hardware RAID available?
A: No, hardware RAID is not available on these servers.

We’ve got about 5 units left available – I expect these will be sold-out by the end of the day.

    Thanks!

I too have placed payment with them but have not actually received any information. I’m alright with it taking some time to get a server in running condition, but they really need to be able to provide some sort of confirmation from within their own organization to let someone know what is going on. Right now, from my perspective, I have less money in my account and absolutely nothing to show for it. Not even an ETA of when the server is going to be made available to me.

I would think letting someone know the status even if it’ll take a couple of days to set up should be a top priority.

4 hours up, initial impression of the server hardware, versaweb ticket/admin interface, and support look great especially for the price. Network seems okay. Sometimes I can pull well over 100 mbit from the server, sometimes barely 10 mbit, but it was about what I expected for the price.

I ordered one early Thursday morning and got an email requesting additional documentation as part of a anti-credit card fraud check. I seem to trigger these semi-frequently, which is rather annoying – do international companies just not like Australian cards or something :P? Anyway, yet to see if the documentation I provided is sufficient, and hopefully I actually did get my order through in time and I’m not doing this for nothing.

I just clicked on the link and got through with the $139 price but I changed the interval to Quarterly and increased the RAM, the price went up. Is the free upgrade to 24GB RAM when paid quarterly deal dead? Also, how is the Dual Intel Xeon L5420? I don’t know much about Xeon processors. Is this a decent 64-Bit processor? I noticed it’s not on the normal list of Dedicated Servers on their site.

Has anyone been using these guys (VersaWeb)? How are they in terms of support?

My main fear is that if I make a mistake with the network config and server becomes inaccessible over the internet, then do they quickly help me fix the problem? (such as reboot and connect IP-KVM etc.?)

Also, how long is the typical wait before they get your order and setup your server?

When I first saw this deal, I spent some time mulling it over. When I finally had decided, they had already sold out. I had asked if this deal would ever come available again and they informed me of some other deals, which I declined. After a month or so, I received an email from them informing me that they were expecting a few more of these servers to come available, so I jumped on it. The details are the same as advertised in this deal. I ended up paying for the entire year in advance. I believe it took them two weeks to catch up with their backlog and setup the server for me. During that time I had some issues with the payment. It was nothing daunting, just confusing, and whoever I spoke with did not clarify much for me. For whatever reason, they could not accept a direct payment, but required that I either send them a voided check or establish a verified PayPal account (which I did not have). I ended up going the PayPal route. This is where the confusion came in. PayPal said the payment had been successfully deducted, but I received various emails saying the payment had not processed, had processed but failed or had succeeded, but not in that order. Finally the emails sorted themselves out (after only a day), but the Versaweb management page said my order had not been paid for and will expire after so many days. I spoke with billing support and they told me not to worry. I think after a few more days everything was sorted out (without any additional effort on my part).

Since the initial confusion, I’ve had little issues with the service. There was some confusion on my part, but that has been sorted out. I have had one outage that required a manual reboot, but that was taken care of within an hour of me submitting a ticket. There was another brief outage due to a power issue in Vegas.

Overall, I am happy with my decision. The benefits (hardware:cost) greatly outweigh any issues I’ve encountered. The only complaint I have is that there is one employee I have dealt with struck me as the you’re-an-idiot-why-don’t-you-know-this-figure-it-out-on-your-own type, but you find those types everywhere, so I don’t think that’s reason enough for a negative review. As long as you’re not overly demanding and are in no major rush for results, their discounted services are wonderful! As with anything, you get what you pay for. If you want smiles and ass kisses 24/7, go pay the $2,000/month! Having said that, I put in a request for additional IP addresses today and I received a helpful response ONE MINUTE after I submitted my ticket. So they’ve been pretty rad for me so far :)
