Updated February 2011: VPS Squad and its sister site VPS Under 5 Dollars both disappear off the Internet on 19 February 2011. The business has already cancelled its registration and I don’t think they are coming back. FAIL.
Josh from VPS Squad emailed me about this new service that they are starting — VPS Under 5 Dollars. With obvious name like that, you’ll have no problem guessing what it is about. Their VPS packages start from $3.95/month, which comes with
- 128MB guaranteed/384MB burstable memory
- 5GB storage
- 100GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps
- OpenVZ/SolusVM
Servers in Dallas, TX. Here’s direct link to sign up. When you prepay you also get more discount. If you set the billing cycle to 6 months or 1 year, you can also use the promo code UNDER5DOLLARS to get 25% off recurring discount — so it would be either $17.25/6 months (~$2.88/month) or $28.50/year (~$2.38/month). LowEndBox readers can also add “LEB” in the order notes to get 5GB extra storage and 50GB/month extra data.
VPSUnder5Dollars.com also offers VPS of the same spec in either New York, Denver or Netherlands — but at a dearer price of $4.95/month. IRC clients are allowed in Denver and Netherlands but no IRC servers.

LEA (LowEndAdmin) is the original founder of LowEndBox and the visionary who gave rise to an entire movement around minimalist, efficient hosting. In 2008, LEA launched LowEndBox with a simple but powerful idea: that it was possible to run meaningful applications, web servers, VPNs, mail servers, and more – on small, low-cost virtual machines with minimal resources.
At a time when most infrastructure discussions were dominated by high-end servers and enterprise platforms, LEA championed the opposite approach: lightweight Linux distros, self-managed servers, open source software, and thoughtful optimization. This philosophy gave birth to the term “Low End Box”, which would come to define a new genre of hosting tailored to developers, tinkerers, and budget-conscious users around the world.
Through LowEndBox and its companion forum, LowEndTalk, LEA built the foundation for what would become one of the most active and enduring communities in the hosting world, prioritizing knowledge-sharing, transparency, and accessibility.
After several years of nurturing the site and community, LEA stepped away from active involvement, passing the torch to a new generation of admins, contributors, and moderators. Today, LEA remains a respected figure in the LowEnd ecosystem, credited with launching a platform and philosophy that continues to influence thousands of infrastructure providers and users globally.
LowEndBox’s legacy, and its thriving community, is a direct result of LEA’s original vision.

> Discount for Annual Payment*
…but nowhere on the page it is explained what does the * mean. Usually it means “additional conditions apply, see the smallprint below”, but there’s nothing of that sort on the page.
The * is a note for the discount which applies to annual payment
Some changes will be made to make it more clear
Server in Dallas?
and any testers?
Seems too good to be true. Did anyone try this?
What exactly is “too good”?
In this community, it seems nothing is “good enough” 😛
Anyway. $28.50/Year — it’s pretty good although there has been better offers. Can’t comment on the service.
@ lsylsy2
All Dallas offers have sold out, Denver only a few left, New York and Netherlands we have approx 10 – 15 of each
We will be adding some offers of the same for Kansas City and Germany if there is any interest
those are some crazy cheap plans starting at 3.95 has anyone had good or bad experience with them so far on such a cheap plan?
VPSSquad e-mailed me about this offer just a few hours before it’s posted here at LEB.
I’ve got a VPS in Kansas City from VPSSquad since February 21st, 2010, when LEA posted this offer: http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/vpssquad-9-903-month-128mb-openvz-vps/.
The only downtime I’ve had was when they had a kernel issue in a particular node on the 15th of August, which freaked me a little.
The good thing is that they posted the issue in the client area, and they even compensate a month free for downtime above their SLA.
It seems that they hire third parties for off site areas, and in my opinion as someone who work in SLM field, I know how frustrating it can be when you have to rely to other parties on critical issues, while you have to meet your SLA.
To sum it up, I’m a happy customer so far 🙂
