LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

Vstoike.ru - $4/month 512MB and $7/month 1GB KVM VPS in St. Petersburg, Russia

Главная_-_В_Стойке_-_2014-08-03_16.10.41Dmitry, from Vstoike.ru, has sent in these exclusive offers to LowEndBox. Last time we featured them it was as a surprise post and it was actually the first time we did feature them. These still are some of the cheapest offers I’ve seen so far in Russia. These VPS are hosted on modern hardware with Intel Xeon CPUs. All hardware and even the data center is Saint Petersburg is owned by Vstoike. They also have their own IPs and uplinks and provide 24×7 support. They have quite a comprehensive website, though it’s completely in Russian so you’d need to use an online translation tool to read it if you don’t speak any Russian. IPv6 comes standard with these machines. They seem to be using SolusVM as a control panel. The default port speed is 100Mbps, but it may be upgraded for a fee to either 1Gbps or 10Gbps. Please let us know if you’re a customer or if you decided to try them out. Your opinion is always valued. Enjoy this offer!

I ordered one of these about 10 Days ago and so far I just can say “thumbs up”.

My VPS does just some Smokeping Tests so I have no clue about maximum IO/s or how much CPU Cycles I can get.
Network RTT (to a Destination within Germany) rises from 60ms to about 160ms between 18:00 UTC and 00:00 UTC.
So that link gets crowded in the evening/night. But that is exactly what I wanted to know out of St. Petersburg :)

The VPS runs Debian Wheezy and is stable so far.

PS: Within the ordering pages of the SolusVM Part, you can switch to English Language. I had no need of a translation from russian to englisch and I also do not speak any russian

    • Can you provide ip address of the host you ping? May be we can fix this.
      Thank you.

Thanks for the reply Dmitry, but that is really the Data I want to gather with that VPS :)
I do the same Checks towards heise.de in Germany and that path has no variations in RTT (its always around 40ms).
So for me everything is perfectly fine !

It is absolutely not normal for any Russian ISP or backbone carrier to have such swings of latency to Europe — not in SPB, not anywhere else. It’s either something is down somewhere (a cable somewhere is cut and is not repaired yet), or some routing/loadbalancing misconfiguration. As they said, if you give the actual IP, they might be able to fix this or investigate with their upstream.

Point is, if you’re thinking you are gathering valid statistics on what latency regular users in Russia have to your website, then no, you’re not, because this is absolutely uncommon and may be specific to just one upstream or particular peering.

When I look into the traceroute it happens far more upstream between AS1273 and AS6830 within the Nederlands.
Destination AS is 29562 and they route it via Aorta/UPC/Unitymedia and therfore Amsterdam.
The complete AS Path for that is 31500 1273 6830 29562
So for me that is a valid statistic and therefore perfectly fine :)

you should also check the reverse path if you can.

rm you are right. The reverse path is different and it looks like the rise in RTT comes from that path. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction :)

The coupon only works on monthly payment and not yearly, thus you’d still be better off paying yearly if you intend to keep it for that long.

I was running this vps as a relay to my email and jabber service on my home server. On the vps itself was openvpn and znc running. And znc was connected through tor to irc, I am not even sure how that should rise a flag? Only openvpn was open to the outside. I got this email today:

Subject: Your VPS is suspended: Botnet controller
     Hello!
Your VPS is suspended, we detect Vawtrack botnet controller on your VPS.
Let us know if you are willing to fix this.
    Thank you.

What a joke. I am not able to check my emails now or contact my co workers as we use xmpp as primary protocol.

This didn’t even take a week.

    • I’m really sorry, it was false-positive malware detection.
As far as I can see, you ask for new IP and we gave you ip which was never assigned to any VPS.
Your VPS was unsuspended in less than 30 minutes.
By way of apology, we want to offer you 15 days of the free VPS service, so now the due date of your VPS is 23/11/2014.

If I am running a blog with many readers, do I need to be registered in Russia? I go sometimes to Russia and do not want to be arrested one time…

    October 19, 2014 @ 6:45 am | Reply
    • Not sure, so I tell you only my opinion.
On the one hand: we’ge got strange law (97 federal law) in which stated that every person running blog with more then 3000 visitors/day should register his site in special catalog and point some information about blog owner.
      http://97-fz.rkn.gov.ru/organizer-dissemination/feedback/
On the other hand: no one knows how to detect if you have more then 3k visitors/day. Even checking process doesnt automated, as far as I know.
And the last. No one arrests you, maximum punishment – your blog will be blocked on Russian Federation territory until you register your blog.

Dunno what’s wrong but I’m running a Tor node for some months now without any issues. Quite stable connection (ping times between 40ms and 60ms from central Europe) and no problems at all.

Though – dDoS’d ? Sure there wasn’t running some rootkit / malware that took part of a botnet ? And auto-renew ? I did a monthly payment the first time, then switched over to a yearly payment but never was there any auto-renew.

No – I’m not working for them, just in a similar business (though we’re doing managed hosting).

My personal opinion – quite good location for a VPS – specially when keeping in mind there’re loads of much more expensive offers out there with much more worst stability.

    • Hello,

Can you see the difference between being a target of a DDoS and being a part of DDoS botnet yourself ? ))
Your VPS was a part of DDoS botnet and was suspended.
I have a strong feeling that you dont know what you are writing about.

p.s. since when ***** comments/people are allowed on LED ?

  25. Rugel:

Dunno about the last comment but I run a Tor exit node, for some weeks it was a relay without any problems about DoS / dDoS warnings. Just can guess there was really a technical problem and something weird was running – though if so, it happens with any (responsible) hoster that such malicious machines get taken down.

Back @topic – running 2 VM’s since August last year I never had any problems. Ping times are stable (between 40 and 60 ms from central Europe – average is 50ms) so overall a good service, specially that I’ve seen much more expensive hosters with way more worst service.

And no – I’m not working for them, though I’m also working in a similar business.
