LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

YDGH - $54/Year 512MB OpenVZ VPS Exclusive Offer

Wayne from YourDomainGoesHere (YDGH) emailed me a few days ago about a misunderstanding with their previous offer that they ended up giving more discount than they initially intended to. Anyway, they have amended the issue and here is their latest exclusive offer for LowEndBox readers. Use promo code LEB15 and prepay for a package 12 months (their low end package being $54/year), and they will throw in 3 months for free ($54 for 15 months, or $3.60/month). You get

  • 512MB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 1,000GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Do note that WHMCS would not update the expiry date of the package when you sign up but they will manually adjust the dates for you to add 3 months. Dallas server. Both Wayne and Corey have been pretty active on this blog to help answering questions which is a good sign.

Will hey even exist 1 year from now?

Will their performance get even worse? (yes, I have a VPS with them, it’s terribly slow..)

Mark its interesting you should post because you certainly have not said anything to us.

Open a ticket and we’ll resolve any issues that actually exist.

  10. I have tested the bandwidth 1 month and it is impossible to get 1K GB a month with that BW. My VPS is here: http://torstatus.blutmagie.de/router_detail.php?FP=c05cb097a8a0d1024a94857b7f32373a8dd39145 and that speaks volumes. As you can see 20 k throughput, it also takes a long time to update distro because of low and fluctuating BW.
Since my setup does not require memory or CPU cycles I cant comment on that, but the aspects that interest me, low latency and good bandwidth, are not there.
I didnt tell them anything, from what I see BW is in short supply there, and didnt feel the need to bash them for a few bucks. Just moved over.

  11. We reserve the right to block/filter or throttle ports and/or ip address ranges at our discretion. This may include blocking port 6667(IRC) , denying access from known spamming IP address range, limiting the speed of ptp file sharing programs, and limiting the speed of certain traffic types such as VOIP or Shoutcast.

We do have customers using their full bandwidth limit.

    https://www.yourdomaingoeshere.com/tempdir/bandwidth.png

And heres one customers usage on the 6th day of the month.
    https://www.yourdomaingoeshere.com/tempdir/bw.png

So in other words the problem is that we do not strictly enforce our terms of service and warn you for violating TOS?

    September 6, 2010 @ 3:56 pm | Reply
  12. I would like to see a proof for what you claim, i.e. violating TOS. None of those things you mentioned are my concern. The bad bandwidth is there from first days, I didnt even manage to setup the node because it was so sluggish i waited a lot of days before doing so. So what violations are you talking about if the VPS wasnt used about 2 weeks from buying it ?
The simple fact that you throw some acusations here instead of looking at the problem at least (show me some irc traffic or p2p, whatever and i shoot myself as unable to maintain a minimal security). Also I would eat VOIP traffic and Shoutcast if you show me some as well as spam (port 25 is blocked by default).
Initially I didnt intend to make a fuss for this, but you have an incredible nerv to throw those acusations without even looking at the problem.

Just a small proof that I am innocent. As you can see I am only listed in tor exit nodes list which is normal since it is a tor exit node and some ppl might want to block them. But Tor is legal under most jusrisdictions (perhaps China, Iran and other contries like those block it, but it is still legal) as well as your TOS. I checked them before, as I do with all TOS before trying the service.
Good luck with that attitude, you will need tons of it.

  14. YDGH-Corey:

    @Daniel

We’ve had many clients running tor, and we always get abuse complaints about people downloading copyrighted material through their tor servers. So as far as we are concerned it is p2p traffic.

    September 8, 2010 @ 3:58 pm | Reply
  15. @Daniel

I apologize if you felt I was attacking you. I did not “accuse” you of anything. Tor is p2p and I was simply posting our tos. None of that line item from our TOS was singled out it was the full line item including the part about p2p. If people have connection speed issues they should open a ticket with us and we will resolve it. (Excluding uses that are violating our tos of course) Its that simple. Per my post above that was one of our customers that used 500gb in less than a week.

Ive said several times we are not perfect, we do run into bumps in the road as we grow, and we will work to fix them. As for connection issues we are only aware of having connection issues as of the past few days and they have been relatively limited. Our data center is upgrading us to GigE connection as we are maxing out our 100Mbps connection!

Also please note due to this all orders made today and probably for the next 24 hours (or until connection is upgraded to GigE will have delayed setups)

    September 9, 2010 @ 1:36 am | Reply
  16. I see you have no idea what Tor is as well as not looking into what ports are open and all the others closed. My Tor does NOT allow anything else than http and mail traffic with their secure versions also.
You continue the **** about violations when this issue actually PREVENTED me to setup the node in a reasonable time because of it’s sluggishness and for at least 10 days (cant remember exactly) there was NOTHING installed BECAUSE it was too slow and we didnt have the whole day. If it was a default machine sitting idle, where are the violations ?
Tor is NOT P2P, at least not more than any computer that has that possibility. My setups certainly are not. Besides, if there is a TOS violation you take offline the machine as DMCA says, not throttle it’s traffic, because violations are the same no matter at what speed they happen.
I do realize you toned down your comments, but a lie is a lie and must be treated as such.

  17. Daniel, bottom line is if you had an issue with the server and you had opened a ticket with us we would of looked into it.

as for “looking into what ports are open” your right I didnt look into anything, we have several customers named “Daniel” so I have no idea of any thing about your server. If you want us to look into it open a ticket please.

If everyone had 20k throughput connections as you said you had, I assure you we would be hearing about it. If you have an issue with speed open a ticket with tracerts and what not– and we will look into it. Im surprised you kept it so long if the speed was so bad.

Overall I apologize for getting defensive originally. Corey and I are extremely passionate about YDGH and your commenting that the speed simply is not their did make me a bit defensive because the speed is definitely there.

We under populate servers and we have some of the fastest bandwidth in Dallas Texas. And we do have customers using over a TB a month bandwidth as shown in the bandwidth above from a customer 6 days in using 500GB!

If you have speed concerns open a ticket and they will be resolved.

  18. 1. The name Daniel perhaps doesnt say much, however I did give you link to the server in the Tor network that contains both the IP and the opened ports for traffic. Without looking into it you decided I have been throttled for violations of the TOS putting up some bits of things that dont add up. If you had a complaint about DMCA you dont throttle BW, for example, same with IRC and whatnot.
I simply said the BW is not there because it wanst. After I wrote here it grew to 40 k, however, another VPS i bought after moving away from you had 800 yesterday and i throttled it myself because I dont want to abuse things to 500. I am not unrealistic and I dont want to cost you more in BW than the price of VPS, but 20 K was just not worth talking about, doubling it didnt solve the problem and with the original attitude we would have gone nowhere.
That being said, I am sorry for reacting the way I did to your original proofless acusations, I dont care about the acusations against me, but you acused Tor too and that is a different story. If you dont want Tor users there, just state it clear in your TOS and I promise I will stay out in the first place. Or put a notice Tor will be throttled to x bits per second, and all will be clear.

  25. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Basically our colo provider is saying that our Switch is failing so they are swapping it out for our backup switch right now. They are also upgrading us to GigE. (Each customer will still be limited to 100Mbps)

We added two nodes tonight, and another node should be added in the next 72 hours. We moved SolusVM to one of the new nodes so that it can handle future growth. So we will be reducing the load on server9 by moving the customer that has VPS5 using nearly full resources to the new Solus Node, and anyone else who is not happy with the server they are on is welcome to open a ticket with us and we will create a new account for you on one the new node or the node coming online within 72 hours, and give you 24-48 hours to move your content to the new node.

We apologize for these difficulties, please open a ticket with us and we will be more than happy to credit your account for a full month for the down time.

As we have said before we are reinvesting “every single penny” into growing our company and making it better. We could not have predicted that a new switch would go bad, but we have a backup and it should be switched to the backup switch very soon. (Just waiting on the data center)

We always keep backup parts so that we can fix any issue immediately.

After the port is rerouted for GigE, and switch is exchanged, and once we have moved the VPS5 off of server9, every known issue should be resolved and everyone should see excellent speeds and uptimes again.

As for the comments of “short lived YDGH” ….. ROFL! We are not going away. Period! :) We are here for the long haul, hince were re-investing every penny into bettering our network, hardware, and every other aspect of YDGH!

Thank you and please do not hesitate to contact us any time for anything…

I started with a reseller account with them and because of their Exellent customer support upgraded to a VPS. Yes we did have a connection problem earlier today. Our colo provider says it was a routing issue from before we moved into our own rack. This effected our entire rack including our main site so we were not able to be in chat or reply to support tickets. I apologize for the inconvenience.

In the future please do not hesitate to call us at 877-YDGH-COM

Or you can call me directly at 903-474-1615

Also anyone who is planning on signing up before 9/22/2010, please expect a 24-72 hour setup. After 9/22/2010 we should be back to auto setup, and we will most likely be starting a limit of 5 or 10 new orders per day for a while until we get far enough ahead on servers to keep up with demand.

Additionally we have added a remote reboot strip so that we do not have to go through the 10-30 minute delay for ColocateUSA to respond to our reboot request, and then another 15 for Colo4 to reply to their request… We understand this is out of their control, and given the deal that we get going through ColocateUSA instead of Colo4 directly we understand this is just part of the deal. And they were kind enough to give us a remote reboot strip to solve the problem.

YDGH will continue to invest every penny we earn into bettering our services so that we can support our customers better and continue offering the best service we can!

Just a brief feedback from my own experience with YDGH. I’ve been with YDGH for more than a month now. I was looking for an affordable VPS with at least 1 gig of memory and enough bandwidth for a small site. For the price and the quality of support, it’s hard to beat. Opened tickets for technical support were handled quick. The admin panel did have a nice feature which my previous VPS provider did not have is that you can chose not only one single linux distro but now I am able to chose the one I like from fedora, centos, ubuntu or debian. Bandwidth monitoring and shell prompt box are handy. I paid more than twice the price with previous VPS while getting less feature than with YDGH. It still depends on what you want to do but something like installing webmin+apache2+mysql5+php5.3 and installing your own CMS like joomla, phpbb3 , wordpress cost less if you know how to do it yourself. I was able to install dfgallery2 http://www.dezinerfolio.com/dfgallery-2/free-flash-gallery on YDGH’s VPS using php5.3 where other failed to run it on many VPS if you read how hard to install that gallery in the above link.

        • @eLohkCalb — not if the NS are on the same box as the webserver that went down — redundancy either! Also when your NS goes down, mails won’t route.

I still can’t believe so called network engineers can’t work out why you need redundant NS…

          October 27, 2010 @ 6:58 am | Reply
        • @LEA

That is true. I’m supporting your point with both hands and legs that provider should implement redundant NS on different boxes (over different network). Important things like website/email should be hosted separately as well.

Maybe providers should take some sort of exams prior to providing services, a certification program perhaps?

          October 27, 2010 @ 7:28 am | Reply
        • YDGH-Corey:

Or maybe you could think that since we charge $5 a month for a vps we don’t have the backing at this time to have everything on seperate boxes and that there are more pressing issues than having redundant NS.

          October 27, 2010 @ 3:27 pm | Reply
        • @Corey — there is really no excuse. I use DNSMadeEasy with their nice anycast network starting $30/year (cheaper than your VPS!) and have multiple servers around the globe. There are also other free DNS providers if people really can’t afford $30/year :)

        • @LEA Would you rather see providers using redundant but free DNS and email over run it themselves all off of one box?

          October 27, 2010 @ 10:57 pm | Reply
        • I have no problem of people using free but redundant (and properly setup) DNS, although “free” ones are often targets of DDoS because of the type of sites they host.

I guess it is mainly a measure on whether the providers, who you assume would have proficient knowledge on network and system administration, know what they are doing.

          October 27, 2010 @ 11:31 pm | Reply
        • Mike:

          Why does it matter? Seriously?

Dead DNS = no e-mail delivery, as in all e-mail sent to domains whose DNS does not / can not resolve will bounce, immediately. That’s a very huge problem.

Much more importantly, is that, as a wannabe service provider, YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS ALREADY. That you clearly know next-to-nothing about DNS cannot help but prompt speculation as to what other vitally important bits of knowledge you cheerfully lack…

          October 28, 2010 @ 3:55 am | Reply
      • @LEA We are not marketing re sellers and have very few re sellers. We are marketing virtual private servers, and if you buy a virtual private server from us you manage your own NS. Put very simply – we are not going to have NS on separate boxes until it makes sense. Aug-Sep-Oct were very bad times for us due to software raid issues and we have since corrected these issues.

@Mike I can’t think of ANYTHING that important that comes into my email box. You can bash on us all day about redundant NS – but it just doesn’t make any sense for us to implement right now. Seeing as how our target is not re seller customers and that we do not sell email services.

For now it’s two months of calmness, for a very good price.
    Very recommended!

    • You were on an upgraded server – very rarely do people post good comments. The only time people post comments is if their server goes down. Which unfortunately we had software raid on a lot of the other servers and they were going down like mad crazy.

So…I’ve had an uptime of 32.3% with ydgh this month. They took three days to answer a high priority email ticket, and most importantly, my VPS is still offline. Probably best to go with someone else if you plan on actually using your VPS!

    • We had tons of tickets during this time, all of our servers were crashing due to software raid. You had every right to go with a different provider during this period, but we have learned that software raid is a big nono.

    • No notice? Probably to people that do not read the tickets we open with them. I think we had a ticket open with you for sometime needing to schedule a transfer and you never responded so we just moved you.

I have the same experience with David, YDGH has not very good bandwidth. When yum downloading “systemtap-1.1-3.el5_5.3.i386.rpm” from centos repository, i only get 27 kB/s. Then i though it perhaps the centos repository which is slow, so i check the respond time from just-ping.com, several response from europe has a packet loss ranging from 10% until 20%. But sometimes i have a good connection, for example when i’m downloading the source of mono from http://ftp.novel.com, i’ve got 438 kB/s. I guess their bandwidth is not properly managed so others can dominate their pipe.

    • Our bandwidth has never been a real issue, you must live somewhere that colo4 is not very well peered with somehow – which is odd because they use all of the major providers and we are using the mix.

In the event someone is browsing the archives, I thought I would give a heads up to potential customers of YDGH.

In the beginning, support was fantastic. The service is a different story. They would constantly reboot their host servers bringing down all of the guests running on them. As of recent, customer service has almost been nonexistent. Apparently, they had a server crash (and I’m assuming hard drive failure) which I was hosted on. They didn’t send a notification to me (but they said they had). The server I was on wasn’t using a RAID setup. What hosting server, or any server in general, would NOT use a RAID setup? They also said I could login to the SolusVM manager and manage my VPS from there. SolusVM details were never sent to me.

As others have suggested, their customer service is almost nonexistent and crap. Their service is horrible. I would recommend finding someone else. I canceled my billing with them

After rereading the emails in regards to my support ticket, I was on s10 which crashed and they relocated me to s5. Went through notifications that were sent out in which one email read:

server5 has been really slow, and we wanted to let you know that we are going to be transferring you to server9 if you are currently on server5. server5 has been nothing but trouble for us and we think it’s time to retire that hardware. The size of your vps determines how long it will take to move you, If you don’t need to be moved with content please open a ticket and request we create you a new account on server9.

      Agree with you,
without confirmation they delete my vps 11 days before the due date

      April 11, 2011 @ 3:31 am | Reply
      • We do not ‘DELETE’ peoples VPS for no reason. Sometimes we prune very old suspended accounts but that is about the extent of that.

        July 1, 2011 @ 7:51 pm | Reply
      • As you can see from the ticket – we did not delete your vps.

You could not login to our client area because we had closed your account – it is the easiest way for us to get you off of our overdue invoice list. You contacted us – and we opened your account back up.

Your VPS3 was also turned on as you can see, we created a new vps for you and you used your backups because your container was not booting for some reason – it was not deleted. We didn’t realize you had another service with us when we closed your account because of your long overdue vps1 invoice.

As a note to everyone – not paying us is not the correct way to close your account. Please put in a cancellation request for the correct item you are cancelling and plan to not pay us for.

    • @Drew We did use a raid set-up. We used software raid. This was a big mistake. We have spent thousands of dollars upgrading servers to hardware raid. Since we have upgraded our servers we have had NO ISSUES with servers going down. The problem with software raid, is that if the processor is under load it tends to go haywire with what it is writing to the disk. We were new to the block – and we had to get that experience under our belts the hard way it seems. SolusVM details are sent in the email that contains your vps information.

@Drew So we can’t put in a new server in place of the old server5 and call it s5? That is exactly what we did.

      • Also – we used to use crappy hitachi $40 1TB Hitachi disks with low I/O back then customers would have seen 30mb/s MAX on their server. Now we use Western Digital Raptors with at least 80MB/s

I have been with YDGH for quite a while now, since September of last year. I have never seen the behavior you are describing from them. Out of all the companies that I have dealt with on LEB, YDGH has the best support. I was one of the customers on the node that crashed, it was a terrible tragedy but YDGH worked through it and eventually restored my server. Because of their dedication I gave them a second chance, and it really did pay off. The only issue I have had since their upgrade was with SolusVM not showing my VPS online. Give these guys a chance, they really do care about their customers!
