YourDomainGoesHere - $24.50/Year 128MB OpenVZ VPS in Chicago/LA

YourDomainGoesHere Wayne from YourDomainGoesHere (YDGH) emailed me their “best ever promotion”. Use promo code LEB30 to get 30% off recurring discount on their OpenVZ VPS plans, when you select annual payment. It works on “VPS1” which already requires annual billing cycle. It comes down to $24.50/year after the discount. You get

  • 128MB memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Since there’s no burstable memory here, it probably won’t be as useful as other yearly 128MB plans from other providers. You can use either PayPal or Google Checkout. Currently there are two data centers available for the VPS1 plan — QuadraNet in Los Angeles CA with (2) availability, and Continuum in Chicago with (30). YDGH has moved out from Dallas back in July/August. “LEB30” can also be used on VPS2 which gives you 341MB/512MB memory, 20GB storage and 1000GB/month data for $40.60/year. If annual payment is not your thing, there’s also LEB10 that gives you 10% off on monthly plans.

YouDomainGoesHere have been around since early 2008, and has been on LowEndBox since mid-last year.

    • Thank you. We plan to have a dallas location sometime at the end of this month.

  2. So what happens when if and when you max out the memory and there’s no swap or burst?

Can you add in your own assignment of swap memory within your hard drive allocation?

    October 20, 2011 @ 2:49 pm | Reply
    • No there is no swap on our openvz plans. In my opinion that would create unneccessary load

      • Ugh posting from phone didnt get to saydo everything… If you need more memory do yourself a favor and buy a plan with more memory so you dont increase your own load and everyone elses on the node.

        • Um, you may want to review what I asked as it has nothing to do with your response.

I wasn’t asking about what to do when you run out of memory. I was wondering how OpenVZ on any other vps software handles it.

          October 20, 2011 @ 10:45 pm | Reply
        • OpenVZ containers themselves actually don’t have the concept of OOM, although OOM might still happen on the physical node, which then OpenVZ will start killing processes from containers using more than guaranteed memory. However it’s really rare.

What often happen with running out of memory inside the container, is that malloc() can no longer return newly allocated pages to your user-land programs. NULL will be returned instead, and it’s all up to how the programs handle them. Some might decide to crash gracefully, and some might trip over the null pointer and segfault.

        • So they kill processes. Thanks.

          I was just curious.

        • Not a problem. Thanks for the follow up.

    • Our vps1 plan now has 256MB burstable memory.

      October 20, 2011 @ 9:14 pm | Reply
    • @drmike — you’ve been here long enough to know that it’s all about privvmpages and your malloc() will return NULL when you run out of privvmpages (and most applications will crash on that).

      • Hmmm, actually I don’t recall it coming up before. To be honest, those terms don’t mean a whole lot to me. I’m assuming they’re OpenVZ specific. I’m on a Xen and while I’ve done research and reading on it, I don’t recall seeing them.

I even seem to recall bumping up my Xen’s swap for an installation a long while back.

And I’ve never maxed out my VPS. Some of us are polite with our resources. :)

But thanks though for the reply.

I have been ydgh customer for a while now. They have had two node failures (node s5 and s11 iirc, i’ve lost all my data), and the Chicago transition left my vps down for 4 days. uptime robot shows 92.7% uptime for the past year or so. not the best result out there.
it has got better recently, but their policy is to make things better and than screw them up again. beware.

    • Not sure what you mean by ‘make things better then screw them up again’… our services have only gotten better for our clients, I know you must see this too or you would not still be with us.

Nodes went down, we brought them back up with better configurations. We learned from our mistakes.

Also not all nodes went to Chicago, there was another node that went to Los Angeles. I don’t think s5 and s11 crashed this year so I don’t know why your uptime is 92.7% after your 4 days of downtime from moving out of Dallas.

In order to continue offering our service to you at the price we do, we had to leave dallas. Would you have rather us hiked the price of your vps up to nearly triple what you were already paying? I know a lot of customers would not have went for that and would rather be down for 4 days while we moved to a new datacenter. We felt that this was the best decision for our customers and our company.

Not to add, we have had 0 DDOS attacks in the new datacenters. There were DDOS attacks at the old one on a regular basis.

Our services must not be to bad, as you are still with us for some reason. :) I imagine you recognize that we improve our services every time there is a problem or you wouldn’t still be with us.

Nah, this is LEB. We have hosts who have been down 100% for months and they still have fans and clients who pay them money for that privilege.

  5. How can you offer CloudLinux as a addon for an openvz VPS, when CloudLinux does not support OpenVZ as it has to run its own kernel?

    October 20, 2011 @ 9:56 pm | Reply
    • It appeared that you could convert centos to cloudlinux by replacing a few things… I could be wrong I’ve never used cloudlinux. Is this not the case?

      October 21, 2011 @ 12:34 am | Reply
      • Definetly not the case, it requires a custom kernel as well as those few files, to create an OpenVZ like environment for a webserver lets say for an example.

        • Oh I see they are planning on having support for it in 6.0

I will remove this from the cart for now since it is useless. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

Love this company. I was with them until this past September when I fell off the internet for a few months. I come back, all new locations and all new site.

    Love their support and quality!

Be careful when signing up with this company.

They suspended our account without warning for load related issues. Then they deleted all our data (by accident?), but still charged us for it.

This was a production system, so the incident caused us a lot of pain.

I would not recommend them for anyting important.

I see what your saying.. I randomly had my account throttled down to 50Mbps without explanation. I was not even near my 1TB per month limit. (350GB to be specific)

      • YDGH-Corey:

Guessing you never opened a ticket Philip, because Matthias was an abuse related issue. We don’t randomly throttle anyone that I am aware of.

Even other VPS provider give a chance to fix problems on abusive related issue. THis company had done the same to me. Ripping me of, took down my VPS after just a couple of weeks of subscription. I paid 1 YEAR!!!

Yes they did warn me, but they did nothing after that, tell me, how can we fix problem with our servers when you guys suspended our account? yet promising me this ‘corey’ guy will take a look at them? I have prove that they done nothing for 24 hours.

The problem I had, is one of my customers’ website that i have moved to YDGH vps, have been hacked, and some code was put inside their index.html, this causing my IP reported as an abuse, yet, YDGH didnt give me a chance to fix this. (at first, i though it was how my qmail setup to bounce back all unknown recipient that causing spamming).

So, no refund, no fixing, take my money, my customer’s loose money.

They put 24/7 support, I submitted a ticket, get an answer 10 hours later. This is a two men company, just a reseller, and I have a doubt on their technical ability.

I cut my loses, i close the account. I have another account with YDGH, i works just fine, this should prove than I am not an abusive users.

here’s a copy of my support ticket http://www.slackinfo.net/ydgh_ticket.pdf , it may not prove anything, but it shows how bad is the supprort, to my opinion.
