Time for a quick announcement. Some of us have voted for the top low end VPS providers for 2011 Q1 on LowEndTalk.com. Here are the results:
- BuyVM1 — 13 votes
- QuickWeb — 6 votes
- Ram Host — 4 votes
- eNetSouth Cloud and Voo Servers — 3 votes
- HostRail2 — 2 votes
Note that
- “thekreek” also recommended BuyVM (but said it in a different response).
- “Rudolph” and “last_wizard4” also recommended HostRail in different responses.
I decided not to count the votes that actually came from a separate response. Basically you don’t need any reputation to write a response, but you do need at least 10 reputation points to vote up. That means a user must have been contributing to the LowEndTalk community to cast votes. Anyway. If I counted those responses as votes, that’ll push HostRail to 4 votes which makes it a equal 3rd with Ram Host. The top 3 is also exactly the same from last quarter, except the order is a bit different.
Congratulations to those great hosts who can provide both great services and good price! And thanks to all who have participated in voting.
We will set up the poll again for Q2 in June.

I think Quickweb is a lot better than BuyVM but I think that buyvm’s 15/year plan attract so many people that almost every LEB users have a plan with them… :)
Yes I think different people are voting for different things. If you are just looking at performance and support, you probably won’t expect HostRail to be there — but who can beat $1.05/month servers?
Hostrail is again a good example: their 1$ VPS is only good for a backup box. But their offshore VPS gives me a decent performance though.
BuyVM dot NET ;)
HostRail actually from a throughout experience with them since their offers, I can tell that. They use HyperVM which is great. And performance for a plan of $1.75 I got in terms of uptime, performance in general (access to 4 CPUs), and also RAM size of 384 guaranteed, all are great. The speed might not look good when you are using a control panel to manage the VPS, but when you judge through the speed of webpages hosted, I see it comparable with my higher end VPSs. And in terms of support, that is the best part actually, they assigned so many technicians even after the time I was satisfied with their support! Since beginning I never open a ticket with no response quicker than other unmanaged hosts I had services with. Furthermore, they are really flexible in terms of payment/customer satisfactory. Really good company overall.
***Hostrail IS REALLY GOOD actually ….. bla bla bla
Yea, the voting will be tough to control. “Best” is super subjective. That’s why its important that the LET post asks folks to identify WHY they think they’re the best.
For that very purpose of objective VPS evaluation, I wonder if you (LEB and trusted community members) could come up with community decided criteria (a poll/posting) combined with a standardised test (a certain set of utility/applications running over a predefined time[s]). Each host who would be willing to participate on that special program should donate the exact amount money required to purchase the service s/he wants to advertise at LEB, which is then used to purchase that service with the host. That would guarantee ‘anonymous’ testing without fear of ‘privileges to alter the test experience’ while keeping financial drain from LEB.
I’m sorry if this has been discussed (or even denied) before, but I couldn’t find anything related to this subject.
I’d much welcome suggestions, feedback and discussion ;)
I have a quickweb test box in Germany and the uptime is fantastic. 65 days and counting.
It was not without a few problems at the beginning. Someone was spiking the IO to 95%+ a few days after I signed up and there at least 1 clueless tech there. But ever since then I have experienced 0 problems.
It’s http://buyvm.net not .com
What a huge mistake, directspace will get a lot of customers LoL :D
Yeah.
It should be http://www.buyvm.bet <— it belongs to frantech
While buyvm.com <– will redirect to the directspace
sorry, typo.
http://www.buyvm.net
That’s the correct address
Haha yes. Not the first time making that mistake, and accidentally put DirectSpace to the top spot (who actually got -4 votes in the poll).
Yeah, It’s really rude how they do this…
From the comments, I think that’s why they got the -4.
So LEA, you mixed up the best and the worst provider? :D
April fool’s day first come to mind actually :) 2001 now must be changed to 2011 though hehe.
Congrats to you guys! You earned it :)
Congrats to Francisco and his team (well deserved!), providing rock bottom prices while maintaining quality service is definitely not easy task and we wont definitely beat them on pricing as almost half of what you pay on our cheapest QW LEB offer goes to the cost of IPv4 :)
The only thing is we got more location options :)
Great stuff LEA!
Yep, your Europe locations are awesome. :)
My VPS uptime with Quickweb in Phoenix is 81 days till now. :)
Always having great and fast support from Mr. Roel / Mr. Matt
I can not make any votes / comments in LowEndTalk, because it’s marked as spam.
If I can, I will vote for QuickWeb as my Favourite :)
The irony of that is that I just tried to leave a comment on your blog and you have something funky going on that prohibits me from moving around the text cursor in the comment text field. Very hard to leave a comment over there. Using Firefox 4.0 for reference.
Hahaha…
Thank you for visiting my blog.
I have to change the template then
Props to Roel for his awesome setup ;) We hope to get BuyVM’s stability caught up to that of Quickweb. It’s taking a lot of work but the newest setup has been very promising! :D
Francisco
I’m waiting for your invasion into Europe :)
Me too :)
Can’t wait until all ISP have IPV6 technology, so then our VPS will be cheaper without IPV4.
well, i don’t agree about enscloud, i’m buying from them with lowendbox certificate. waiting 24 hours vps not setup, each time send email must waiting 24 hours.., dunno why they got vote… i just ask refund for the worst vps ordering experience..
Ordering experience — yes I think they are quite strict with any order that fail the automated fraud test. So where you are from does play a significant role. Discriminating — yes. But unfortunately that’s how small business protect themselves :(
I guess people vote on the basis of performance and stability AFTER the VPS has been delivered.
Enscloud is a gamble. If nothing is wrong on their end, you don’t have to deal with their support. If anything goes wrong on their end, you are out of luck.
Their support can be extremely slow as mentioned by multiple people here. As I’ve said before, my vCenter login went unfixed for at least 45 days* after I asked them to fix it 8 separate times on Feb 14, Feb 17, Feb 28, Mar 18, Mar 20, Mar 24, and Mar 30. This wasn’t just a random request. A couple of times my VPS locked up and I wasn’t able to reboot it myself. When I send them an email about it, they usually rebooted 12-18 hours later, and didn’t respond.
They had multiple DOS attacks at Ubiquity with 95% packet loss over 30 days. This isn’t their fault, but it took them over 30 days to start moving people to Colo Crossing. And during that outage they had a few unexplained outages for 12-18 hours as evidenced by reboots to my VM, and directly adjacent IPs being offline but other IPs behind the same router were online.
I have a full one page review that I am ready to release on WHT. The final edits depend on how much longer I have to wait for my refund (48 hours and counting as of now) after Brandon gave me 1 day notice before terminating my account** because I was commenting about them on lowendbox.
* Brian at ENS said he finally fixed it on Thursday but I haven’t bothered to check after Brandon told me he was going to cancel my account in 1 day:

Unfortunately I’m starting to experience the same. The box is generally very stable and runs well, but if you ever need support you’re on your own. I’ve been emailing them for over a week now about poor IO on my server:
It’s been at that for just over a week with no responses or action from any support ticket or email. I know they’re quite busy moving servers they say, but my box is on one of the Ubiquity servers and it’s still there as of now.
The lowendtalk is down? ಠ_ಠ
Looks like it.
Not here. Maybe it’s just fixed
I believe eNS is manual setup as well (correct me if I’m wrong!)
Should have said something over on LET about your issue then.
If you don’t vote, you can’t complain.
The BEST Low End VPS for me is ClubUpTime. There is not a such performance and speed.
The problem is no game server hosting, and no IRC hosting, or VNC hosting. Everything else is great (other than glitchy Debian 5 template).
Shockingly, some of us would see that “problem” as a benefit. (Well, not the Debian glitch…)
(I’m not a ClubUptime customer, FWIW.)
Gameservers aren’t very CPU intensive (at least the ones I run, they use about 30% CPU from a quad core running at 300mhz per core). Not much at all. If you run a gameserver, you cannot hammer network speed or I/O. If you run IRC, you cannot hammer I/O or CPU. It’s all about the mix of users.
Still I must praise their uptime. Haven’t had any issues about it, and the servers are quite responsive.
Congrats BuyVM!
Thanks :)
Francisco
Ya, I have about 6 low end boxes right now including a BuyVM vps. I wouldn’t ever say it is the best.
I would say it is a great value for $15/yr but it doesn’t have the performance or the stability of any
of my other VPSes.
We’re working at that :)
Thanks to everyone that voted and thanks LEB for the announcement!
Francisco
You’ve mistakenly typed buyvm.com instead buyvm.net, which is a affiliate site of DirectSpace, which I’m quite unhappy with. :)
Yeah that has been fixed. We all hate squatters…
I wanted to get a plan with Buyvm at the time they just started from the very beginning, but didn’t will to take the risk looking into several factors, and instead got a sturdy VPS with same specifications but a little higher price. But from good reviews though I can tell that if I had a VPS with them, I wouldn’t feel much difference. But just the worry of service discontinue would stay no matter with their price/age of company, compared to the one I had. So, I never regret. And congrats to all those superior budget hosts!
buyvm curently out of stock hope they restock the vps
BTW, why is Burst.net is not ANYWHERE nominated by its users (including me) :/ It should have been credited by some VPS customer, for the solid uptime solid I/O solid network stable nods…!
Why didn’t you nominate them then?
Really good idea! But I didn’t nominate anyone, since I don’t have an account in LET from the first place. But I think would nominate HostRail if I had an account and the required number of posts!
You just need an account to nominate somebody, you don’t need any reputation or posts for it. However if you would like to upvote a provider you need at least 10 karma.
WTH? 2001?! Fool date is over.
… thats funny :)
+1 for VooServers. Great performance, stability and support at a very decent price. Very happy with them.
Keep it up Matt!
Gosh. This blog is addictive. Every time I come here I order some VPS or other. I am getting VPSitis… Must…stop…coming…here…:P
Same here. I am so damn tempted to grab another VPS (currently have 11 VPSes, about 5 for me XD)
I have 6 now, all for me. And I have been here barely for 10 days, I think. At this rate by the end of the year I will have a 100…
It’s somehow strange to see HostFail on this list.
HostRail is actually pretty good… well for me anyway.
What do you use it for?
I used it as a web server for a while, but switched to a different VPS because I needed more resources. At the moment, I’m only using it for backups.
I too have it 4PU plan, the I/O is the weaker I think, but is absolutely fine for hosting a website, as it never effects loading my contents in anyway. The network speed is sometimes very fast (like 8 MB / sec) while most of the time downloads at 1~2 MB / sec, which is around 10 Mbps ~ 20 Mbps connection speed most of the time, most will not need higher than that with the plan specially that BW is limited to 400 GB. And I run on it few domains!!! Including few files hosted in a web site, and images hosted on a website with moderate loads sometimes, and where downtime is the last thing I look for, but works exactly as it should, for few months now. Uptime is great and comparable to all providers it stays up for weeks before I restart it myself. Knowing it is the only >$3 VPS I have and satisfied with, all other VPS costs =>$6.
Glad to see we made the top 3 again. Thanks for all your support :)
Congrats to Quickweb and BuyVM as well.
Got 2 VPS with with RamHost
Got 1 VPS with BuyVM
You both have good service and until now you have never fail me.
As for Hostrail, I used to have 6 VPS, but unfortunately due to too many downtimes and allegedly DDos attack, I only retain 1 US based VPS and move my sites to a $35/mo dedi.
Thumbs up to you guys.
I’m satisfied with whynotavps. Uptime is more than 47 days. Support is slow but to be honest to say, till now, I didn’t face any single issue till now. IPV6 isn’t yet introduced by them.
I’m too interested to take a box from BuyVM. But for many days they are out of stock. I emailed them to let me know if packagess are available, but no response so far.
123systems is too cheap and with worst performance. I use them to play.
You’re excited about 47 days? Really?
My VPS at Steadfast has been up for 319 days. My VPS at welcome2inter.net has been up for 272 days. My (horribly oversold) VPS from Spacerich has been up 186 days. My VPS at Quickweb has been up 167 days since I reinstalled it.
Three digits is worth getting excited about. 47 days? Not so much so.
@Snape,
I’m using their service for three months. And they are one of the cheap provider, I’m satisfied.
What email did you contact?
If it was admin@frantech.ca I responded to all of the requests I last saw – I apologize if i somehow missed yours!
Francisco
I sent you an email. I’m waiting for next stocks :)
The ponny team really did the great job.
hail to bzimage,solar,aldyric,dilt,greammypants, etc…
they keep frans to have a nice wet sleep. :)
Congratulations to everyone and thank you for the votes.
As LEA said, I gave Hostrail a nod in a separate post since I couldn’t yet upvote (due to rep, as LEA described). However, after creating that post I then got enough rep points to be able to upvote, so I did, and left a note to disregard the separate comment.
The upshot of this is that HostRail would end up with a 3, not a 4, because my vote actually did get counted as one of the 2 real votes.
To further expound: At the time I was disenchanted with BuyVM’s “soon, maybe tomorrow” responses to stock availability inquiries (three weeks of “in a couple days” gets old). Hostrail got my vote since they actually had stock to sell. Since then BuyVM actually did get some stock and I nabbed a $15/yr one. Comparing the usability of the two similarly-priced VPS, today BuyVM would get my vote instead. When comparing availability HostRail would still get the vote.
We have a large performance upgrade going on so we’re caught up with that instead of loading up stock :) When we have everything nice and snazzy we’ll load up whatever stock we have left over.
Thanks for the interest!
Francisco
performance and maintenance the already presented products is better than adding new stocks :)
What’s sad is that we only had 28 or so people vote for the top 5 providers.
I seem to recall more votes last time around.
Plus no one appeared to pad their voting it appears. No scandals noticed. Would have thought at least one provider would have at least tried to do something.
Yup.
Quarterly is probably too often for this kind of poll.
RAMHOST has the mid to high end on their VPS line in stock right now.. snag em fast.
their EU servers should be going up sometime soon… i think i’ll be first to jump on that
as for the others:
buyvm.net – i have two.. one that is a vpn + run various maintenence scripts, the other acts as a round robin dns.
hostrail – i love the response time from here in CO.. fast, and the one time i had a tech support issue i had it resolved quickly
123 – great for price, it’s a slow vpn that i won’t be renewing once the contract is up
semoweb – it gets a nuetral review… kinda out of place compared to the others.. once again vpn and round robin… also an image sharing host for a forum i admin.
Allsimple – 15/yr for 128 – i got it for (yes, round robin + vpn) but based outta the UK.. i gotta say that this thing is fast!! highly recommend it next time they pull a promotion. Ohh.. and like RAMHOST, this is the only vpn provider who has a working status page that kicks ass w/ load times.
nixcom.ca – if you’re a customer they’ll email you deals before putting them even on their twitter page… and if u ask they’ll usually be happy to work with you regarding making it worth your while. No complaints other than it ‘could’ be faster for a canadian based host.. it’s not slow, but let’s just say i’ve got a germany vps thats faster.
Honestly i’m just waiting for another ramhost offering..
> RAMHOST has the mid to high end on their VPS line in stock right now.. snag em fast.
We’ve been busy upgrading servers and now we expect to be able to open signups for all vps every weekend (they do go fast tho).
> their EU servers should be going up sometime soon
That had originally been planned for this fall but we may fast track those to this summer – we’ll see how it goes.
Thanks for the kind words :)
Hey you guys deserve it… i had to use you guys as an emergency wordpress host backup on an account that wasn’t optimized, didn’t have much power/ram, and a site that was a beast… it actually handled it better than i’d ever even imagine! yeah it wasn’t as fast as before but no time-outs, no worries about downtime.. no spikes.. (ok ok.. by then i’d gone thorugh and optimized the living shit outta the thing but still.. )
thx
Optimized…..Wordpress……?! What planet are you living on buddy? WordPress is a platform used by low traffic sites and retards without a care in the world for “optimization”.
Why would someone who has enough traffic and knowledge to need to “optimize” a site make an concious decision to use WordPress?
> Allsimple – 15/yr for 128 – i got it for (yes, round robin + vpn) but based outta the UK.. i gotta say that this thing is fast!! highly recommend it next time they pull a promotion. Ohh.. and like RAMHOST, this is the only vpn provider who has a working status page that kicks ass w/ load times.
Thanks for the feedback :)
I really like eNSCloud. Service is really good, but lately i’m not getting any answers for my support tickets. That’s a very important point to consider if you plan buy a VPS from this guys. Nice service, kind and helpful support team, but slow response time for incidents with priority medium or low.
PS: Brandon, please answer my emails!
Congrats Fran! I’ll buy one once you have “stack.”
It’s a shame BuyVM still haven’t figured out the difference between a possessive (VPN’s) and a plural (VPNs). I know some other retards who make this mistake regularly but I certainly wouldn’t let them run my server.
It’s a shame people like to take worthless shots at a company because they can’t find anything else to be critical about.
Unfortunately though when some of us actually do find something wrong with a host around here, it pretty much gets ignored by the host and/or the peanut gallery tried to shoot us down with negative comments ranging from insults to down right distastefulness.
I could have sworn that we had this discussion before though here and it was generally held that, while not being correct, it was accepted as customary within the IT field as it’s an acronym. Also considering most folks write ABC’s instead of ABCs…
But I’m sure my comment here will just result in PenguinTux (or whatever sock puppet he or she is using this week) accusing me of being the spawn of the devil yet again.
Sorry to say that even LowEndBox is not free from grammar nazi… Although according to Wikipedia (that cannot possibly be trusted, RIGHT?!) regarding to pluralisation of acronyms,
Anyway. Read the rest of the Wikipedia article, but basically the English language is FUBAR and pretty much the land of lawlessness. D’oh.
I was looking at the same article. Mind you that I don’t have a problem with using the apostrophes, Wikipedia does say it is incorrect:
The linked to reference is not loading for me so I can’t check it myself.
And, no, I don’t trust Wikipedia but I’m big on peer review.
Because being grammatically correct is critical to server administration.
In Ted’s defense, it does fall under the “First Impressions” bit and it is important for that….
And I’m sure all of us here have screwed up a trailing } mark once or twice in PHP. Can’t really say it’s not important.
English is one of the greatest growing language in the world and has expanded into various dialects. We have British English, American English, Canadian English, Australian English, Pidgin English, Singaporean English, Indonesian English, Chinatown English, Bronx English, etc.
So the phrase:
Do you have any money? & Have you any money? are both correct. Colloquially, “You got money?” is also correct.
Words like:
organisation and organization, both are also correct.
When I went to Singapore, I accompanied a friend of mine, a migrant worker, and he wanted to buy a hack saw. So we went to a hardware store. When we got there my friend asked the shopkeeper “Ser, ser, I want buy tool chop chop pipe metal. He goes to you and come to me.”
The shopkeeper smiled and said “Ayya, you make me confuse ha, but wait laa,” and he went back behind the counter, and came back with a hacks saw and said “You want this?”.
My friend answered with glee “Right, that I want.”
A cab driver in Jakarta who accidentally bumped a US Diplomat’s car from the back tried to apologize when a huge and tall Caucasian stepped out of the car and start yelling “You f*ckin’ idiot! Dont’ you see my car?”
The cab driver with fear in his face said apologetically “Sorry sir, you break suddenly, I no time break suddenly too.”
Still yelling but a little confuse the huge man said “Don’t you see that traffic light? When it’s red, it means that you have to stop! Idiot! You’ll pay for this,”
The cab driver with even meeker face replied “I know, I sorry. I try break my car, my car not stop because tayers bold no flowers anymore. You want me pay broken car. I new out pool taxi. I no have money.”
Now the huge man is really confused and never got a clue of what the cab driver had said.
Is McDonnald’s motto “I’m liking it!” grammatically correct? Shouldn’t it be “I like it?” If both are correct, do they have the same meaning?
Sometimes grammatically correct sentences confuses general readers.
In my opinion the most important thing in English is how to pass a message across and all parties involved understand each other.
So I betta syutcama mout en go awey. Yasah, ain’t no speakin’ English mather tange. Heh heh heh…
I have a VPS with QuickWeb and it is up for 83 days without an issue; and I had restarted it after some updates myself. Performance is good and support is always fast. I have a few other VPSs but none comes close to QuickWeb.
Someone (bert) messed up the links here: http://www.lowendbox.com/wiki/top-providers
Hey
Ramhost start vps offers again
