VolumeDrive - $4.95 1GB OpenVZ VPS in Scranton

VolumeDrive As posted on LowEndTalk, VolumeDrive has updated its VPS plan, which we reported 11 months ago. It was already a very good package back then, and VD has just made the spec even better! For $4.95/month, this is what you will get for their “VPS Package 1”.

  • 1GB guaranteed/2GB burstable memory
  • 50GB storage
  • 2000GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/vePortal

VolumeDrive have their servers in Scranton PA, which is close to where their headquarter is. They might have colo their servers with BurstNet, as traceroute would go through Burst/HostNoc’s routers before landing on their IP. It did post some pretty nice benchmark, however they also seem to have OpenVZ UBC set at rather strange values that cause issues in everyday operations. Getting support also seems to be a frustrating exercise for some. After all, the specification shows quite impressive figures, but whether you can use it is another matter.

I did call VolumeDrive an established company. Domain registered in 2006, but still have both NS on the adjacent IP addresses.

  1. Hmm, the specs look so great. I’m wondering how can they price even lower than BurstNet.

You are talking about there old ip block dating 2008, but little do you even on what block they provision now. http://whois.arin.net/rest/net/NET-173-242-112-0-1

Word. They have a huge ass room inside of Burst’s facility, that any *real* client can easily get a tour of. For the record, I have multiple servers colo’d with them and VolumeDrive has been nothing short of spectacular to deal with for the 3 years that I’ve been with them.

Just read though that thread. Nice to see a provider act professionally. Some of the providers here should also read through that thread as they have a long way to go before they’re up at that level.

Big +1 from me. Although the contenidosonline issue at the end concerns me a bit. Was only 48 minutes though before complaining and then says that they were going to cancel.

      • I think I covered this but the point I was trying to make was that they acted professionally. Many hosts don’t get how important that is. I said that I had read through that thread. I’m big on giving references and that’s why I included the link that LEA gave.

+1 to that. Customer service, public relations and how you interact with mad and happy clients matter. Some hosts forget what first impression means (such as veVPS).

How professional is it to give everyone extremely low limits and then only raise the limits when people complain?

      April 9, 2011 @ 3:48 pm | Reply
      • Probably to tackle abusive clients on the HN

        April 9, 2011 @ 3:50 pm | Reply
      • Actually I would think it’s very professional. That way resources are allocated to those who truly need them. iTom covers this in his follow up on the first page of that thread.

Considering those people complaining are moaning and complaining first to a third party webforum instead of opening a ticket like they should be doing, I think the VolumeDrive rep kept his or her cool and sounded professional. The people complaining sounded more like they were interested in complaining than getting the issue resolved. Zidit was interested in other people’s opinion while other folks were just complaining.

Granted it may be too low….

So what you are saying is that some people “truly need” the resources and some people
don’t “truly need” them ? Shouldn’t everyone paying the $4.95/month get the same thing?

I’ve long been an advocate of providers setting sane and rational UBL limits, because the default settings so many use are really just an invitation to disaster. (“Oh look, I can open 9.9 million TCP connections!” <– a fantastically bad idea, as just one of many examples.) I view 'em just like CPU or bandwidth limits – an important part of well-thought-out resource management.

That said, some of those limits do look slihtly on the low side, period. Particularly numiptent – most firewalls are going to exceed 128 rules by quite a ways, just on the default settings.

It’s also worth pointing out that their “headquarters” in Pennsylvania is actually a UPS Store, i.e. just a mail drop. Who owns the company and where they actually are is an enigma wrapped in a mystery.

      • Hmmm, I wonder how the food is at the Moe‘s. :D

*shrug* Gotta admit that that doesn’t bother me as much as it used to. Changing addresses with a corporation is a pain. Also while many folks disdain private whois, many corporations use mail drops of one sort or another for their official address. May also be a zoning issue in that state where you can’t operate businesses out of one’s home.

Not disagreeing with you. Just saying it’s pretty much commonplace now a days.

        • Snape:

It’s pretty commonplace, sure. I just find it interesting that while they are registered in PA as a business, no officers are listed, nor any other address than their UPS Store one. They have their name marked with (TM) on their website, but it’s not registered – as far as I can tell – with the USPTO. If you hunt around long enough on the web, you’ll find two phone numbers for them – one on PA, and one in New Jersey. After poking through the Wayback Machine, I can say they once employed a web designer named “Max”, and may be owned by a guy named David Black, who lives on 17 acres in North Carolina and used to be involved with relay.net, back in the 1990s… and those are really the only names I can associate with the company, despite their having been around for four-five years. Not a single employee/ex-employee on LinkedIn, or anywhere else that I can find…

  19. I just signed up for Semoweb with 256 MB RAM. Would it be advisable to switch to this since it gives you so much more?

I am on the west coast so Semoweb is closer to me.

    • PenguinTux:

I reside on the west coast (California, to be exact) as well.

To be honest, I do not understand VolumeDrive’s business model, but them being in business for 4-5 years shows they know what they are doing.

Personally, I have not faced issues with either semoweb or volumedrive.

However I would keep both for the following reasons:
      1.) Different locations
      2.) Mixed reviews on Volumedrive
3.) Different providers – never put all your eggs in one basket.
4.) Both are only a few bucks – keep it and lock in the price.

I have not seen anything bad about SemoWeb so I am trusting my important info with them and keeping volumedrive as my play box. Of course I take offsite backups nonetheless :)

Wow please don’t order this VPS. I tried it a couple weeks ago and it was horrible. I left a comment in another post.

The IO wait is insane. I’m talking about the entire VPS locking up for hours if you are reading a 50 megabyte file. You will also be unable to login through SSH because of the IO wait sometimes. The control panel also goes down randomly.

The support is really bad too. I emailed them asking to cancel my account, and they deleted it instantly instead of leaving it up until the end of my term which was about 3 more weeks.

      Hi,

Are you able to use that much ram? As I can’t really trust getting even 50% of this RAM with such price, because of expected UBC throttle. I think if you try you wont be able to, even though I hope so :)

      Thanks!

      • Likely it’s going to swap first. Remember that in OpenVZ, even if your memory pages get swapped out, they are still counted as “used”.

Thanks a lot for clarification :) Even though I’m not sure if I correctly get it.

But what I meant was some who puts strict limits on those parameters, meaning if your VPS use for instance a lot of processes you may not be able to use even 50% of allocated RAM, while if you are using few processes that demands a lot of memory you will then only be able to utilize the full RAM. That’s what I notice at least, and which keeps me curious :)

Other people are saying they’ve waited 36+ hours to get their service activated. I am not the only one having issues with the password they provided me. For now, I wouldn’t order anything from them. I hope this isn’t the norm. I’m giving them some slack since they were just posted on here a few days ago and that may have led to more orders than normal. Still, I paid money for something and they have yet to deliver.

Here’s my final post about these guys. To recap, VPS activation took about 24 hours. Their support is via email only and is slow and generally unreliable. You get fragmented responses and chances are their response is something you’ve already searched on google and tried and didn’t work. I also ran into a problem installing cpanel/whm on my vps. If you run into the same problem, install cpanel via the vePortal. Cpanel’s install script would not work on my vps. Overall, if you need vps service for reselling, or some other sort of mission critical application–stay away from these guys. If you are just looking for something casual with no support… I would recommend them. I don’t think their prices can be beat. So where they lack all the other refinements of more expensive hosts they make up for low cost. Bottom line, you get what you pay for.

My VPS is still working like a charm. I’m not really going to set my expectations high in terms of support for a 1 GB (2 GB burst) VPS for $5/m, at this rate I would be happy to even wait one week for provisioning as well as support.

My VPS has always been up and performance is still great. I still don’t understand how their business plan works, they had a huge sale for Xeon X3440 w/ 8 GB RAM dedicateds for $49/m on WHT, that’s almost a three year ROI not to mention cancellations as well. This is a high end VPS for low end pricing. However they have been in business for 4-5 years which shows they are doing something right and know what they are doing. Probably a huge publicity stunt with all of these crazy offers. I hope they are still able to maintain profitability though. I say within a few months they will start raising prices on new orders, since they are probably getting lots and lots of publicity from the crazy offers as of late.

From where I stand it looks like they have burnt out a credit card or got some credit with ebuyer or the likes on a buy now pay back later deal, They invested in huge amounts of hardware and now giving some good deals to help cover costs and start collecting the cash flow for when it comes to pay off their debits, Anyone can do it if your feeling lucky enough to get such huge amounts of credit, They have been around afew years so its even more likely they got a business loan or something, I just hope their support picks up because all over the internet I keep seeing “Volume Drive Slow Support” & “Volume Drive 1 Week No Support”

Exactly, This is what am referring too, I believe their client portal is under going some kind of updates, I think they should of got the client portal updates out the way before attracting such high attention to themselfs through these type of offers, emails will simply get lost and they will loose track of things as theirs no real way to document everything when its all email based in email accounts, It would be wise if they got their client portal up and running at least and forget about the “enhanced updates” for a while, at least it would bring everything into some kind of order.

That won’t stop abusers and spammers who will try to run 8 billion emails through your VPS. May be a hobby to you but that won’t stop abuse when you get targeted.

      • I’ve noticed both of my VPS’s have port 25 open and sendmail or whatever SMTP server is running by default. Is it secure by default since I haven’t configured it or do I need to take some additional steps?

        Thanks.

  61. I purchased vps from them 10 days ago, till yesterday everything’s been running fine. today i can’t access the default apache page of my vps when entering my vps ip, and can’t access my vps using putty.

weird thing is, I can access my vps using vePortal. Tried rebooting, shutdown then starting my vps but to no avail. anyone know what’s the cause of this problem? I just email the support but i doubt they will reply in a day.

Hmm, Ipap.co holds a ton of dedicated servers from these guys, which probably explains the slow responses.
I almost purchased a dedicated server here when they were in stock, but veered back. Glad I did.

I may still purchase a small 1GB system with them, since it is only $5.00 and thats good enough for me to likely test it with a VoIP (TS3).

I have to admit, HostGator got me where i’m at now with websites. Very helpful they are. Google works fine, but damn, can it be hard to find things -sometimes-.

Just an update RE: support – I had an issue last night with very high loss on my VPS – turns out another customers on my node was under attack. I emailed them about it and they replied within 5 minutes and resolved it quickly – of the 4 emails I have sent to support@ they have answered within 5 minutes each time

No it was getting about 80% packetloss and random bursts of high pings. It took them a few to fix it, but they were able to within a reasonable amount of time – and were very responsive to support tickets. Basically I was just complimenting them on their support and handling of the issue.

These guys have some really strange values for UBC. Barrier for shmpages on my 2GB account is set to 800, which gives me ~3MB available for tmpfs. Does anyone have a clue on why they’re using these values? Usage of shmpages would be included in privvmpages anyway, so I’m really having trouble seeing what they have to gain from setting the shmpages barrier this low.

I did contact their support on this matter, and they actually increased the UBC barrier from 300 or so up to 800. But as this tiny increase didn’t really help all that much, I tried to contact them again. This time they didn’t respond at all.

    • Generally shmpages is like oomguarpages barrier right?

    • Try not mounting /tmp as tmpfs? Although I have to agree that 800 for shmpages is very low.

Sorry for still bringing up this, but I’ve had no troubles with these guys. I ordered 2 VPSes from them, both arrived in about 3 days. One of them is on the vps4 node, the other is on vps7. The one on vps4 went down about an hour or so ago (the node itself seems to be down). vps7 is fine, anyone have their vps down ?

This host is really funny. I’ve waited 2 days for the VPS delivery. OK, I can live with that. But when it was delivered, my probles really started.
There was a Debian 6 installed on the VPS. “Great!” I thought. I was wrong. It was working, but not with the I’net. No ping, no traceroute, no SSH, nothing. Tried rebooting – same output. Tried reinstalling the OS – nothing. I’ve even tried to install Debian 5 (64 and 32-bit) – same problem, VPS doesn’t seem to connect to network. The funny thing is, when I tried CentOS and Fedora, it worked like a charm, everything went smooth.
I’ve tried to contact support, but there was no answer (in few days).

If you want CentOS/Fedora only VPS, get it. If you want Debian, you can end up with non-working VPS.

I’m not going to stay with them. The price is great for the specs, the nods are fast and work pretty good, but everything else is shitty.

I paid about $20 in total for a VPS and cPanel server from them and it didn’t work (second server which didn’t work) so contacted them, and after about 1 month when the payment expired for VPS and cPanel they still haven’t contacted me regardless of me contacting them at about 2 or 3 different email addresses!

    Avoid them.

If there was anything good I said about them, I take it back, once node was oversold they didn’t bother to stop any of the abuse, I/O wait is only good for running shit like scrapboxes or over spam (Since according to Burst and VD it’s not spam, it’s “internet advertising”). Besides that constant out of memory errors and finally on a lucky day a server with mysql database completely crashes. Guess what – Can’t help you.
Can I get a new node at least – Of course not, we will ignore you. Got 2/6 e-mails answered in 3 month from them. Moving on.

        • vzfree is supposed to show how much of your processes is swapped out on the node. What’s odd is free shows swap too.

          free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
          Mem: 7955 564 7390 0 0 0
          -/+ buffers/cache: 564 7390
          Swap: 859 215 644

(215mb is also what vzfree shows for swap right now)

          Another odd thing is:
          1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 21.4018 seconds, 50.2 MB/s
I have no idea how a system swapping that bad can get that good disk IO unless the swap is on another drive.

  77. Carter:

Some nice quotes out of their AUP / TOS (http://volumedrive.com/policies/tos.html http://volumedrive.com/policies/aup.html):
    ——————————————————————————————–

    11. Running any process that listen on a network port unless first authorized by VolumeDrive.

    3. Scheduled Processes (***This only applies to shared hosting and not dedicated servers***), including (but not limited to) “cron jobs” and “at jobs”, can significantly drain server and network resources due to overuse. Customers are restricted from running any processor- or network-intensive scheduled process more than once per day. Processes which do not excessively use (at VolumeDrive discretion)* processor or network resources may be run more often, but no more than once every hour.

    4. Process Monitoring(***This only applies to shared hosting and not dedicated servers***) Using any script or program that continually monitors running processes, internal or external sites or applications, or e-mail accounts that execute at an interval of less than one hour is strictly prohibited.

    12. Process Limits(***This only applies to shared hosting and not dedicated servers***) VolumeDrive currently limits Customers’ processes to the following resource restrictions:

    CPU time: 20 minutes
    Resident memory:48 megabytes
    Virtual memory: 80 megabytes
    Open files: 240
    Running processes: 20

    5. Long-running Processes(***This only applies to shared hosting and not dedicated servers***) VolumeDrive strictly prohibits the execution of long-running processes (more than 5 minutes of CPU time) unless specifically authorized in advance by VolumeDrive.*

nice, huh? … and so, I don’t want ANYTHING from them anymore if they don’t change their AUP.

Problem is that they can “kick” you, if you don’t do.. and that’s a little risky, to be kicked only for using your payed VPS :D

        • Not planning to repurchase the VPS anyway. Expires on the 26th of this month so i’ll lose about 50 cents?

Bleh. I’ll just keep it up and if it suspends tomorrow or within an hour I’ll just set it up on a more… *opened* vps that allows port listening. Not sure why a VPS wouldn’t listen on a port unless you just use it for a proxy around your workplace.

    • AFAIK, these kind of policies are of a shared hosting. And dedicated/vps is the “same” thing. Let’s say, this are outdated TOS/AUP probably. But maybe better to ask.

I haven’t heard from them after I cancelled my vps =))) It was barely one month -,- I waited for a week for the setup and now there something wrong with its OS reloader. So I just gave up =)) But Josh seems to be nice guy. I’m still waiting if I’ll hear from them regarding it as it’s been like, 3 or 4 days I think :/ Too bad, good specs for a VPS. Dunno if they’re real though as I’ve only used like 1% of those lol.

Should have updated you guys sooner, but within 24 hours the VPS got activated, so the wait wasn’t too bad for m. Although I emailed support@volumedrive.com to ask them why I was still waiting they activated the VPS very soon after.

Also, I think it was well worth the wait because the VPS is very fast and also very high end for the price. I haven’t had time to post all the benchmarks but I can confirm that I am getting the full 100mbit’s most of the time and also 60-80mb’s file copy speed.

    Hi
I used Volumedrive openvz vps (4.95$/month) for 6-9 months. Not a single issue.
Suddenly I lost access to my vps, no access via ssh either via web-portal.

Last invoice Oct, 14th 2011, Paid 16 Oct.
I send them 2 mail in 4 days, no answer.
    Very disappointed!

Ordered a dedicated server over of 4 days!! AND NO DETAILS!!… The answer was: We’ve received several hundred orders. Again, we can not give an ETA, but we should certainly have it to you by the end of the week….!!

Make sure they backdate your billing date too! The longer they take the more profit they can make..

About the first few comments regarding them coloing at burst net.

I remember reading a few months back that they actually started out operating completely within burst nets datacenter. They rented space there and operated out of it i guess. Reading on i think it said they had since moved otu due to expansion but still use burst nets infarstucture. Therefore whenever burst is our so is VD as far as i am aware.

The reason they can offer these prices is because they are scammers and thieves. I ordered a dedicated server. They took my money and ran and they’re now ignoring my emails.

Doesn’t sound like they’re good even for a personal blog. Their prices are nothing special. You can get much better services from good providers.
