I know it has been around for a while. HostD8 has some budget IPv6-only virtual servers, starting from $1/month. It comes in either OpenVZ or KVM. Here’s the spec:
- 256MB memory (256MB swap on KVM)
- 5GB storage
- 100GB/month data transfer on 10Mbps
- OpenVZ or KVM/Virtualizor
Servers in Kansas City MO. Again these are IPv6-only VPS where you need IPv6 stack to talk to. IPv4 addresses are $2.50/month a pop though, which makes that 256MB KVM with IPv4 $3.50/month, which is not bad either. Port speed is also pretty slow at 10Mbps with expensive $5/month upgrade to 100Mbps. HostD8 is a new business started in February this year, after acquired a few other companies.

I’m looking forward to user experiences with this host and his KVM plan, anyone has it?
Question:
ipv6-only ip address, does that mean that people trying to visit need to have ipv6 compatible software/hardware?
or can I just put an domain on it, with an AAAA record, and nobody will know the difference?
If you are using it for public facing website, then yes, your visitors also need to have IPv6. One use would be using it as a backend server, and put a reverse proxy for your domain on another VPS with dual IPv4/IPv6 stack.
If it’s only accesible in ipv6 then people without ipv6 access won’t be able to access it.
ipv6 access could mean native or tunneled access.
I didn’t like their TOS at all, one huge unreadable wall of text, and favours the company 100% more than the user (i.e. “you don’t have any rights, but we can do anything we like”).
“favours the company 100% more than the user” -> can you be more specific ? ( very hard for me to read unformatted TOS)
> Hostd8.com HEREBY RESERVES THE RIGHT TO AMEND, ALTER, MODIFY, REPLACE OR SUSPEND, FROM TIME TO TIME IN ITS SOLE DISCRETION, ALL OR ANY PORTION OF THE SLA, THE AUP AND ITS PRIVACY POLICY (AS IN EFFECT FROM TIME TO TIME AS SET FORTH ON Hostd8.com’S WEBSITE, THE “PRIVACY POLICY”)
^– nothing is mentioned how/if customers are informed of such TOS/AUP changes, what constitutes their acceptance of updated versions, or after which period those come into effect.
> In order to cancel or elect not to renew any Product or Service, Customer must submit via fax a copy of Hostd8.com cancellation request (a “Cancellation Notice”) CUSTOMER AKNOWLEDGES AND AGREES THAT NO PRODUCT OR SERVICE WILL BE CANCELLED, ALL PRODUCTS AND SERVICES SHALL CONTINUE TO RENEW AND CUSTOMER WILL CONTINUE TO BE BILLED FOR ALL PRODUCTS AND SERVICES UNLESS CUSTOMER CANCELLS THE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES AS PROVIDED IN THIS SECTION 3.
^– so get this, the only way to cancel the service is to __FAX__ them some form; else they will attempt to continue billing you. Also I can’t find any “SECTION 3” in this badly formatted TOS, so I assume it’s the fax stuff right directly before.
> In the event that Customer exceeds the Agreed Usage, Hostd8.com may, at its sole discretion, collect a deposit, in the amount of $0.40 per GB from Customer, or to the extent that Customer has a credit card on file with Hostd8.com, apply such charge against Customer’s credit card. Data transfer in excess of the Agreed Usage shall be automatically billed to Customer.
^– “first 100 GB free”, then $40 per additional 100 GB, no way to opt out.
That’s only what lies on the surface, like you said it is very hard to read it, so there might be more.
Also it’s possible they may have not read it themselves, just copypasted from somewhere and replaced the company name. That also would explain broken formatting (since you see some section headers right in the text, they are just not formatted as headers).
so basically the way every single tos in america is?
Their WHMCS page is terrible :( I got one shared hosting with them :)
unprofessional site its just ……………….
Let me share my horror story.
1) I ordered one on 11th July. I received details few hours later.
2) I tried to access via SSH; found the server is not responding. I tried accessing it via Control Panel. SSH console failed to connect. I restarted container and tried again. Nothing worked. I reinstalled OS and then tried again. Still server is down. I tried to connect via VNC console. I found that VNC access is disabled. I thought as it is a budget vps, they disabled it.
3) I submitted one ticket on 11th July explaining that I can’t access my server. Initially I received a reply that “Lead tech is looking at it”.
4) After few more posts from my side, I received one response from them on 12th July. They asked me to check my side that I can access IPV6 servers.
5) I posted details that I can access IPV6 servers from home on 12th July.
6) I was informed on the same day that their technical staff is looking at it.
7) On 14th July I posted one follow up comment asking them to either allocate a new server or move my server to a new node.
8) On 18th July my ticket was closed. Since 12th April I didn’t hear anything from them. I posted why my ticket was closed without resolving my problem?
9) My ticket was re-opened on the same day without any comment.
10) On 18th they allocated me on IPV4 ip to access my server. But access problem remained.
11) When I reported that I can’t access VPS via new ip, I was asked whether I have configured network properly.
12) On the same day I asked them if I don’t have VNC/SSH access from Control Panel how am I going to configure network? Thankfully I was given VNC access.
13) I noticed on the same day that my IPV4 ip was removed from Control Panel.
14) I configured my VPS network with IPV6 key and gateway information. Still I can’t access Internet.
15) I reported them on 19th that I still can’t access internet via my vps. I posted that I saw the following error- dmesg reported: no IPV6 routers present
16) Their technical staff reported – “ok let me check into this I willnhave to consult with the lead tech to see what is going on here”. Till date I didn’t re
As of now my vps is accessible only via VNC. As the IPV4 ip I was assigned is not showing up in the control panel; I didn’t use it in my VPS.
I have copy of my discussion thread. If LEA wants to verify what I said, please email me.
Moral of the story – Buyers Beware!
It looks like they tried to solve the problem, and I guess they allocated the IPV4 just for you to try to connect to it and verify if the problem is in IPV6.
Yes, it’s taking much more time than it should, but that’s not enough to call it a “horror story”.
you must be either joking or working for them – 10 days is not acceptable timeframe to handle a support ticket, especially for something such small as assigning an IP
It looks to me they have no f**kken clue how to configure what they’re trying to sell.
And @Biplab may be their first (and the only?) customer on an IPv6 plan.
I got one on July 11 & cancelled on July 15 after no response to support ticket.
Couldn’t assess the server at all, not even a ping6.
Looks like it’s not native ipv6 but a Hurricane Electric tunnel from the ipv6 address I was allocated of 2001:470:1f11:1143:0000:0001:0a39:f8f2
That’s pretty lame, I’d expect at least a native IPv6 (and not just one) from IPv6 only VPS.
I think I’ll pass this offer.
.tserv9.chi1.ipv6.he.net
yeah, tunneled
So, what happened? Did you get your VPS?
Since 19th July that ticket was not updated. The ticket was closed couple of days ago by their system without any reply.
Yesterday I cancelled their service.
Is it just me, or is their website currently unresolvable because they have absolutely no glue for their nameservers?
Seems their main site is down.
Maybe they accidentally put their website on their IPv6-only VPS :)
No. They didn’t post by mistake. See following WHT thread for details-
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1064226
Oops! What I posted is not related to what LEA posted.
Their site is online now and my ticket is closed without any reply from their side.
Their website is currently inaccessible…
lol.
404 – Not Found
on main site…
The website pulls up for me just fine.
I do hope they can get this all worked out as I wish to never seen another VPS host go bad =)
Best of luck to you yall!
The only way I’d ever give this host money is out of pity to hire a site developer. The current website … design … template … whatever that monstrosity is, is so sad I almost cried.
I don’t mind a bad site if the service is good, but neither the site or service seem to be good.
Main site is down. In case anyone cares it does not have an AAAA record, so it hasn’t gone ipv6-only :(.
That’s hilarious.
