Huge Datacenter Fire in Cairo Kills 4 Employees and Disrupts Service Throughout Egypt

Flag of EgyptA little less than 24 hours ago, a catastrophic fire erupted at Telecom Egypt’s Ramses Exchange in downtown Cairo, resulting in the deaths of four employees and injuries to at least 27 others. The blaze, which originated on the seventh floor of the 10-story building, severely disrupted the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure, leading to widespread Internet and mobile service outages.

The Ramses Exchange is a critical hub in Egypt’s telecom network, serving as the main wire center for Telecom Egypt and housing the Cairo Internet Exchange (CAIX).  As a result of the blaze, Internet usage dropped to 62% of normal levels.  The outage affected various services, including emergency hotlines, digital banking, and air travel. The Egyptian Stock Exchange also suspended trading due to technical issues tied to the communications failure.

Authorities believe the fire was likely caused by an electrical short circuit. Firefighters battled the flames for hours, managing to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent structures.

LowEndBox wishes to express condolences to those who lost their lives in this tragedy or were otherwise affected.
