123Systems - $4.95 512MB OpenVZ VPS in Dallas

123Systems After listing 6 new providers yesterday, I’ll just do one that has been regularly featured here today. 123Systems is currently doing a special offer for their Lin-512MB package at the moment. $6 on their VPS hosting page (as featured last time), but $4.95/month if you sign up using this link. You get

  • 512MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 1TB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Check previous offers on people’s reviews of 123Systems. Andrew has been running it for as long as I can remember. Servers in Dallas TX with Limestone Networks — same data center as recently troubled HostRail. I wonder whether they might also be affected by the increase of IP pricing.

I have a similar experience with the download speeds as well. I have a vps with them and while the box itself is really good (stable a very fast), the d/l speeds are not satisfactory, even for a low end provider. I raised the issue via ticket last week but thus far nothing has improved. I hope they will get this fixed soon. Otherwise, very good box.

There is a large discussion about HostRail at WHT. Other providers on LSN have stated no increase, and HostRail also stopped paying another provider that they hosted with.

  5. LEA,

Our prices were never increased by limestone (Servers or Subnets). HostRail owed limestone upward of $17,000 according to the CEO of HostRail. So I’m not entirely sure if Limestone even increased prices or if the owner was trying to get the money to pay their bills in all of their server locations (They were shutdown at Private layer for the same reason.)

But to answer the question, No we have not had any price increases at Limestone.

As you mention pricing, I hope you won’t mind a quick question.
I’m well aware that I’ve no clue on the hosting company side of things, but your pricing scheme is a bit puzzling for me from the customer perspective.
I’d get 192/384MB RAM and 500GB transfer with 10GB storage for $15/year and
512/1024MB RAM with 1000GB transfer and 20GB storage for $43/year, but if I order
      256/512MB RAM, 500GB transfer, 10GB storage, I’d pay $36/year.
Why does the 256 package require that much money per RAM/transfer/storage compared to the other two?

I honestly don’t think we are going to venture down that avenue. After LEA posted the other provider that utilizes Bitcoin, I did some research on it and it’s really not something we need or want.

We do however accept the following:

      2Checkout/Paypal
      Moneybookers
      AlertPay/Credit Card

I like it, I’m glad they use SolusVM, I sometimes get a bit angry when I see people using HyperVM to control your VPS, it’s just old and SolusVM is much cleaner. You have to manually install Kloxo, not a huge issue they have it in their knowledgebase except for lazier people (me of course).

All so good, very good price for this.

No IPv6 support is somewhat of a disadvantage, and support can sometimes be abrupt and borderline rude at other times (tickets closed with no response). Well worth it for the money spent, though.

      # dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync && rm -f test

It only takes 20mb, so $10/yr plan will work fine.
I once asked support, but refused. Don’t understand why.

        • You can install it directly. On a 128 mb system you need to change something though.

          disable the fastest mirror:
          # sed -i ‘s/enabled\=1/enabled\=0/’ /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/fastestmirror.conf

          Limit memory:
          # ulimit -s 128

          You can upgrade the system:
          yum -y install yum-utils
          yum -y install make
          yum -y upgrade

          Or directly install Kloxo:
          # setenforce 0
          # wget http://download.lxlabs.com/download/kloxo/production/kloxo-install-master.sh
          # sh ./kloxo-install-master.sh

Follow the on-screen instruction and your system will be installed in minutes.

        • Sometimes in a low memory (especially when a box is oversold), should you want to upgrade the OS, you have to do it partially e.g.:

          # yum -y upgrade apr apr-util audit-libs audit-libs-python authconfig bind-libs

    • openvpn needs a tun/tap kernel module – these are not quite standard on vps systems. guess you’ll need to open a ticket for that(although I seriously liked that if more providers included tun/tap networking as a default on their hypervisor)

      • Very few OpenVZ providers offer PPTP (BuyVM are the only one I know of who do) for PPTP usually I go with KVM or XEN providers, but OpenVPN is more secure anyway, and that will work fine on OpenVZ you just need to ask for tun to be enabled.

        • Having tried and absolutely agreed with @vRozenSch00n,
123systems Network connection speed is amazing; all my 123systems boxes in Dallas perform at 3.2MB/s – 6.2MB/s to Asia connections although the DC is inland. $36/year should be a better choice than $10-$15/year plans. However, all my boxes now perform at about 45MB/s-67MB/s. That is so good to my needs.

          Recommended! :)

        July 8, 2011 @ 3:39 am | Reply
        • I guess you can access to all the cores in fair share, but you will be throttled if needed for other containers. And “2vCPU” means that you have access to 2 cores just for you (and throttled to 50% in my experience with them in the $15/y plans).

        • Thanks, Yomero,
I think you’re right. These twos may provide only 1 core in strict concurrence. Otherwise, the former seems to have more cores than the latter.

Got a 128MB plan with 5GB disk space and 250GB bandwidth on 1Gbps for $15 annually. I’ve requested both extra RAM and disk space for 24 hours and have asked to be invoiced for it – Both times I’ve been given these resources free.

They are temporary resources for client’s who are having issues completing tasking because they do not have the required resources (EG: backups, system updates, etc).

If you do not require permanent resources then we are most certainly not going to charge you for using extra ram or disk space for a few hours to complete the task at hand.

        • To be fair my ticket submissions haven’t exactly been mission critical.. Just things like is IPv6 available? So speed isn’t required there..

All of my tickets (a total of two) have been responded in a professional timely manner, within 10 minutes on the first one and 20 on the second one, neither were high demand too.

        • @Ixape: They not support ipv6 at this time. Use tunnelbroker for ipv6.

        • @Hien & Ixape

We have IPV6 addresses ( http://whois.arin.net/rest/net/NET6-2607-FF68-100-11-1.html ) however not all of our nodes are IPV6 compatible, Once I get the time to write up a script and run them on the nodes, We will begin assigning IPV6 addresses to [all] container’s in the Dallas area. Although once this has been completed, IPV6 addresses will be assigned automatically on new signups.

I’m hoping to get this done by the time our next quarterly update comes up.

          -Andrew

  39. Submitted a ticket about disk I/O on a node – No reply after hours. Requested a refund in the same ticket and found no reply still – But a notice from PayPal/2CO saying the payment had been refunded and the server was terminated.

    • You refund because slow disk I/0 ? It seem enough for me to run both dns server and webserver. I’m still happy customer.

Don’t expect anything in the way of support from these guys. i bought a vps with cpanel from them. Cpanel’s been unlicensed for 12 days and counting. no response to support tickets at all. avoid them at all cost unless you just need a cheap development server.

  43. After waiting for more than 12 hours, vps was online, different IP address, they gave me a new node, lost lots of data because of their “hardware” problem, i do not recommend them for anything, everything is unprofessional.

Can one of you maybe shine some light upon this for me? My old server is online but when I signed into my SolusVM, I have a completely different IP but I can SSH to both, so confusing.

  45. BellRing:

Every month I have a downtime of all my 3 VPS. When querying the support you will get an answer stating “It will be working shortly”. This “shortly” seems to be defined as “between 12 and 48 hours”.

Therefore: The VPS are completely fine for private usage if you are fine with a few downtimes. In this case, the price-service relation is quite ok.

  50. $20/year VPS with 256 dedicated/512 burst, 10GB HDD, and 500GB bandwidth.

Ping is higher from Canada -> Texas than it should be but still ~60ms:

Was expecting faster I/O too but it is midrange at least:
