Cohoster - $6.40 128MB VMWare VPS in Netherlands

Update July 2010: Web server is not connecting since 21 June. IP is still resolving, but otherwise looks very dead. FAIL.

Cohoster Via this WHT offer. Cohoster is a Netherlands based company, whose domain was just registered 2 months ago. They indeed have a simple web site, but they are also offering VMWare based virtual server hosting, which has been rare. They are offering WHT members 20% discount using promo code WHT20OFF. Their Netherlands based VPS is now $6.40/month and comes with

  • 128MB memory
  • 5GB storage
  • 50GB/month data transfer
  • VMWare/ESX

One thing about VMWare solution is that it’s hardware emulation thus you can load up non-Linux operating systems such as FreeBSD or Windows. They are also offering US based ESX hosting for $4/month with the same promo code but at an unknown location.

  1. This is their test IP for US location : 208.94.244.44.

  2. I would be wary. It’s against VMware’s ToS to use ESX or ESXi for public VPS hosting unless you’re paying full licensing fees. I somehow doubt they are doing that at these prices, and their site is conspicuously silent on the issue.

Its surprising how many providers are showing up in Kansas City, I assume things are getting better there?

  7. Random Stranger:

In addition, no chamber of commerce registrant information, nor contact details (other than an email address) are supplied (required for commercial entities). The WHOIS record of their domain lists a quite (too?) fancy (canal) street in Amsterdam, but the number is missing. Have they got anything to hide?

  8. Note that it’s not the first VMWare VPS provider on the low end. A few more here. Maybe VMWare needs to investigate whether there’s any abuse of license here?

  9. As Ryan stated it out, I too, doubt that Cohoster is paying full licensing fees for VMware. This is a red flag for me so if you’re going to shell out your money here, expect less :)

  10. In case there’s any question, 9(b) is the relevant portion of the EULA: http://www.vmware.com/download/eula/esx_server.html

  12. The thing is we do not know what’s the appropriate amount for VMWare VPS. I used to have a VMWare VPS for $10/month — is that too cheap? I also noticed yesterday after looking at frantech.ca. $12.50/month VMWare VPS with 512MB — is that too cheap?

    I basically have no idea.

  13. I have emailed cohoster support about this blog post 3 days ago. And still he didn’t give any response.
    FYI :
    – in their first VPS offer (2010-05-28), their 386MB RAM VPS price is $25.
    – in second offer (2010-06-04), their 256MB vps price is $14.
So, maybe he give a big discount in this offering

  14. Cohoster.net has been offline for the last 3-4 days. Maybe they have realised their licensing mistake and decided to pull out?

  15. LowEndAdmin, I know you mentioned in the post their domain had only been active for a couple of months. Could you clarify your policy of only posting companies that have been active for a year or more?

In that case there would be only couple posts/year, hehe.

  17. @Ryan & @mina — indeed. I just mention about their lack of longevity in their domain names, but will still post them. Tracking dead hosts on this blog can be equally fun sometimes :)

  18. OK, so the blog doesn’t adhere to the listing criteria you have on the wiki? That’s where I got the idea (probably incorrectly) that everything posted had been vetted.

  19. Anyway. The web server has not been responding since 21 June — only a week after their WHT offer. One of the fastest failure for sure. There you go to the dead pool.

  20. @LowEndAdmin

We actually do very well with our $12.50/m plans :) As you can see, we’re sold out in our two racks in Fremont and are currently filling a 3rd rack as we speak! With BuyVM doing as well as it is, we will be able to also offer some $6.25/m windows plans with 256MB RAM ;)

99% of the VPS companies out there just rent equipment, which can lead to serious issues for overages, etc. We actually own all of our equipment, allowing us a lot of room to compete ;)

  21. @Francisco — it’s great that your hosting business is booming, but what does that have to do with Cohoster? :) Or are you replying my comment on VMWare-based VPS providers on the other post?

  23. Random note, I operate a small VPS provider as well and we have legit licenses for our ESX products from Vmware. Just because you dont have 200 nodes, doesn’t mean you don’t have legit software. We start our boxes at $10-$20 for lower end which helps us cover our costs, but we do have some very low plans.. Vmware is just another route administrators have if their pocket books allow them to handle the initial investment.
