LEA (LowEndAdmin) is the original founder of LowEndBox and the visionary who gave rise to an entire movement around minimalist, efficient hosting. In 2008, LEA launched LowEndBox with a simple but powerful idea: that it was possible to run meaningful applications, web servers, VPNs, mail servers, and more – on small, low-cost virtual machines with minimal resources.
At a time when most infrastructure discussions were dominated by high-end servers and enterprise platforms, LEA championed the opposite approach: lightweight Linux distros, self-managed servers, open source software, and thoughtful optimization. This philosophy gave birth to the term “Low End Box”, which would come to define a new genre of hosting tailored to developers, tinkerers, and budget-conscious users around the world.
Through LowEndBox and its companion forum, LowEndTalk, LEA built the foundation for what would become one of the most active and enduring communities in the hosting world, prioritizing knowledge-sharing, transparency, and accessibility.
After several years of nurturing the site and community, LEA stepped away from active involvement, passing the torch to a new generation of admins, contributors, and moderators. Today, LEA remains a respected figure in the LowEnd ecosystem, credited with launching a platform and philosophy that continues to influence thousands of infrastructure providers and users globally.
LowEndBox’s legacy, and its thriving community, is a direct result of LEA’s original vision.

I think it is in kansas (kcmodatacenter)
I would be wary. It’s against VMware’s ToS to use ESX or ESXi for public VPS hosting unless you’re paying full licensing fees. I somehow doubt they are doing that at these prices, and their site is conspicuously silent on the issue.
I think..This Virpus Reseller…
Virpus use openvz, not ESX
Its surprising how many providers are showing up in Kansas City, I assume things are getting better there?
cos joes and wi = cheapest places EVER
In addition, no chamber of commerce registrant information, nor contact details (other than an email address) are supplied (required for commercial entities). The WHOIS record of their domain lists a quite (too?) fancy (canal) street in Amsterdam, but the number is missing. Have they got anything to hide?
Note that it’s not the first VMWare VPS provider on the low end. A few more here. Maybe VMWare needs to investigate whether there’s any abuse of license here?
As Ryan stated it out, I too, doubt that Cohoster is paying full licensing fees for VMware. This is a red flag for me so if you’re going to shell out your money here, expect less :)
In case there’s any question, 9(b) is the relevant portion of the EULA: http://www.vmware.com/download/eula/esx_server.html
Anyone care to drop VMWare an email and ask?
The thing is we do not know what’s the appropriate amount for VMWare VPS. I used to have a VMWare VPS for $10/month — is that too cheap? I also noticed yesterday after looking at frantech.ca. $12.50/month VMWare VPS with 512MB — is that too cheap?
I basically have no idea.
I have emailed cohoster support about this blog post 3 days ago. And still he didn’t give any response.
FYI :
– in their first VPS offer (2010-05-28), their 386MB RAM VPS price is $25.
– in second offer (2010-06-04), their 256MB vps price is $14.
So, maybe he give a big discount in this offering
Cohoster.net has been offline for the last 3-4 days. Maybe they have realised their licensing mistake and decided to pull out?
LowEndAdmin, I know you mentioned in the post their domain had only been active for a couple of months. Could you clarify your policy of only posting companies that have been active for a year or more?
In that case there would be only couple posts/year, hehe.
@Ryan & @mina — indeed. I just mention about their lack of longevity in their domain names, but will still post them. Tracking dead hosts on this blog can be equally fun sometimes :)
OK, so the blog doesn’t adhere to the listing criteria you have on the wiki? That’s where I got the idea (probably incorrectly) that everything posted had been vetted.
Anyway. The web server has not been responding since 21 June — only a week after their WHT offer. One of the fastest failure for sure. There you go to the dead pool.
@LowEndAdmin
We actually do very well with our $12.50/m plans :) As you can see, we’re sold out in our two racks in Fremont and are currently filling a 3rd rack as we speak! With BuyVM doing as well as it is, we will be able to also offer some $6.25/m windows plans with 256MB RAM ;)
99% of the VPS companies out there just rent equipment, which can lead to serious issues for overages, etc. We actually own all of our equipment, allowing us a lot of room to compete ;)
Francisco
@Francisco — it’s great that your hosting business is booming, but what does that have to do with Cohoster? :) Or are you replying my comment on VMWare-based VPS providers on the other post?
@LEA
Just a reply about the vmware based providers ;)
Francisco
Random note, I operate a small VPS provider as well and we have legit licenses for our ESX products from Vmware. Just because you dont have 200 nodes, doesn’t mean you don’t have legit software. We start our boxes at $10-$20 for lower end which helps us cover our costs, but we do have some very low plans.. Vmware is just another route administrators have if their pocket books allow them to handle the initial investment.
