LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

Deadpool July & August 2012

Here is your latest deadpool installmant. I will try and do it monthly however, as I was away at the end of July, this edition covers both July and August. As usual we appreciate your input in the comments below.

Basshost BassHost

Current Status: IP address not resolvable

BassHost were first featured in August 2011 when they submitted three plans: a $3 128mb vps, a $5 256mb vps and a $7 512mb vps. However the latter was never included in the post due to their controversial 4% ‘paypal tax’ which made the 512mb plan cost more than the $7 lowendbox monthly limit. After recieving much critism for the paypal tax, basshost later removed it. Their website also featured a racy image of woman, they later tried to justify it by likening it to GoDaddy’s marketing.

Their final offer came in February of this year when they offered 256mb vps for $24 per year. In early August 2012 clients began to report that their vps were down and not responding. A month later, one of their co founders, Todd, wrote a long and detailed thread at webhostingtalk on what had happened.

Boxvps Boxvps

Current Status: Redirects to http://mabushosting.net/

Boxvps were listed 7 times throughout 2008 and 2009. Offers ranged from a $6 64mb vps to a $36/Year 512mb openvz vps. In 2010, LowEndAdmin reported boxvps was being sold. The buyer was reported to be vpsguys.com.

It is worth noting that BoxVPS were previously known as Mabus Hosting.

Curvehost CurveHost

Current Status: Domain Expired, GoDaddy renew page.

Curvehost’s first and only appearance on LowEndBox came in March 2011. Their offer was for a 256mb ram, 50gb hdd and 1000gb of bandwidth located in either Manchester England or Kansas City for $3.99 a month.

Within days of the order going up people were complaining they could not get in touch with the owner and their services hadn’t been provisioned.

Fastvps Fastvps

Current Status: IP address not resolvable

Where do I begin? Fastvps were first and only listed on lowendbox in December 2011 when ‘Erik’ sent “their “Boxing Week” promotion” into lowendbox. Four plans featured, ranging from a 128MB vps at $12/year to a $6 a month 1GB vps. Servers were in Scranton, presumably with Burstnet or volumedrive.

Not too long after the post, 4 minutes in fact, Francisco, our in-house early warning host detection radar, speculated the host may in fact be the same cronies who ran UptimeVPS (for those who don’t know who uptimevps were; they were a pump and dump’ scam host). Francisco’s claims were not baseless, Fastvps shared many similarities with Uptimevps – not least they too were oddly using a .co domain. Other users quickly joined the debate agreeing that they also thought Fastvps resembled Uptimevps.

Signs of what was in store for their customers began when, within a few days of their post going live, clients vps’s started being migrated to Miami for no apparent reason. A month later, the servers were migrated again this time to Kansas City. Performance kept going down hill one client summarised his experience by saying “Ridiculous , horrible , scary . Absolutely THE WORST company EVER.”.

Suspiciously, in July of this year remaining clients were told Fastvps had been acquired by Stablevps and that their vps would be moved for a 3rd time, this time to OVH. Francisco speculated the acquisition was sham, and another excuse to cut costs again. I could not find any information on stablevps.

Flvps Flvps.net

Current Status: Redirects to www.kjmanagedsolutions.com

Flvps were featured in November 2011 after they sent in two packages. One was for a KVM vps with 256MB Ram, 25GB storage and 100gb bandwidth for $6.99. Their other package came with 512MB Ram, 50GB Storage and 200gb bandwidth and also cost $6.99, however this was OpenVZ based. Servers were with Hivelocity in Tampa Florida.

I’m not exactly sure what happened to Flvps, there are no threads complaining about downtime or being scammed, so if you, were, are a client let us know! Although, their webhostingtalk account has been banned and their lowendtalk account hasn’t been used since march.

layeredlink LayeredLink

Current Status: Redirects to www.serversdrift.com

We first listed, Ukrainian based, LayeredLink in December 2011 when they were offering OpenVZ based vps in Germany. It has came to our attention that LayeredLink has rebranded itself to Serversdrift (their twitter confirms this).

urgentvps Urgentvps

Current Status: DNS service has expired

Urgentvps and lowendbox first crossed paths in January 2010 when LowEndAdmin posted an offer which he found on webhostingtalk for a €14.85/Quarter 384MB Virtuozzo VPS in Germany.

6 other offers were published, with their last offer, for a €25/Year 256MB Xen VPS in Germany, appearing in October 2011. Throughout the previous 5 offers, some users complained of excessive downtime and others of their vps being terminated for no apparent reason.

On their final offer, a few damning reviews and comments came in; such as this one from a user called ‘TVZ’ who complained of slow bandwidth speeds of just 5kB/sec and the fact that by default “there is an entry in root’s .ssh/authorized_keys file”.

In March of this year, some users of lowendtalk reported their vps was down.

vpsworld VPS-World

Current Status: Redirects to http://www.g-netics.de/

Michael wrote to us in December 2011 to share a €3.50 256MB OpenVZ VPS in Germany. The vps came with a whopping 5000GB of bandwidth and was hosted in Dusseldorf, Germany.

It is worth noting that vps-world.eu were originally a sub company of g-netics, so I imagine this is just a consolidation of the two brands into one.

vpsbd VPSBD

Current Status: Domain Parked

In September 2011, LowEndAdmin re-blogged an offer from webhostingtalk. The offer was for a 128mb OpenVZ vps hosted with Sentris in Seattle, Washington. Things got off to a murky start, a connection between them and DuoMarkets (a scam host) was discovered and they were paying people to write positive reviews.

After that we didn’t hear from vpsbd again. According to their twitter, they suffered with several problems during July and then on August the 3rd they announced on twitter that ‘hostwebcentral’ had bought their clients.

Upcoming…

The following host(s) may be dead however we lack the sufficient evidence that they are.

  • SimpleRack Website displaying ‘Under Construction’ message, report they are dead from 2011.
  • SwarmHost WHMCS is still up, main website has down for a month.

You could add to Curvehost that their site was hacked by some Pakistani “freedom fighter”, there was a silly looking page on the domain for a week or so, about a month ago.

    • liam:

In essence no, but on the other hand they are deadpooling their old company into a new business.

      • zar:

The client base remains the same, the resources remain the same, the people remain the same, just the brand name changes. They aren’t restarting a company, just changing the face. You do this non-deadpool service provider a disservice by including him in this list.

  13. FLVPS was bought by KJMS if I remember correctly. Sad to see another Tampa LEB provider (and a company located in Pinellas County) disappear though. :(

    • FLVPS:

FLVPS was KJMS’s attempt at an unmanaged brand since KJMS sold managed services which was out of the price range on here. Surprise, some providers do this….

  20. FLVPS:

Also why is having your WHT account banned at one time some sort of big deal? You’re obviously a nobody if you have not been mistaken by a fascist WHT moderator for somebody else and they ban you, with little or no reason, because of a few light comments in the VPS hosting area.

I still don’t know who bear accuses me of being so I just register a new name until somebody accuses me of being somebody else so I can submit a driver’s license as “proof” that I’m dumb enough to show ID to anyone on the Internet to “prove my identity” when those folks hide behind aliases and an Ohio Attorney General investigating such illegal practices right now ;-)

    September 15, 2012 @ 9:11 am | Reply
    • Nexus:

I agree, WHT is full of garbage. I get banned all the time and just re-make my accounts until they finally trace my IP, lol. Bunch of monkeys running that forum.

So, to whom we should trust our money then? Almost all low end boxes seems scam.

    September 15, 2012 @ 9:16 am | Reply
    • Fritz, take a look around LEB and also LET. You will find that there are actually many trusted LEB providers.

      September 15, 2012 @ 10:33 am | Reply
      • As Matt says above; there are many fantastic reputable hosts.
If you are worried, you can always create a thread on lowendtalk (our forum) and we’ll give you advice ;-)

        September 15, 2012 @ 1:37 pm | Reply
    • Folks ask this all the time and you lnow what, nobody has ever given a precise answer.

The answer usually give is. LEB/LET will keep an eye on everything for you and if we find out its a scam, we will let you know. Such unsustainable pricing on rented servers from the DC? What if they fill up a node, does this VPS provider have access to /24s for new orders? Are they going to move datacenters a few times? When they move, do they reissue the new DCs IPs because they do not get IPs from ARIN?

I think a new emphasis should be who has their own IP space. For example, SecureDragon and VPS6.NET are the two ARIN issued providers I can think of.

  27. Joe:

    I’m still hosted with neosurge.

My VPS reports 24 days of uptime, which is when I paid for the account and activated it.

I have not seen any downtime: a bit of lag occasionally when connected via SSH but not sure where it’s coming from. I’m also on the Denver servers, that might be partly why.

I’m not impressed with the fact that they email out the first password (cleartext passwords?…) and the fact that their SSL certificate is expired. But my hosting has been up since I paid for it, so I can’t complain on that front.

I might switch once my year is up, if the issues aren’t resolved. I know I’m really looking at Loose Foot Computing as an alternative if they don’t resolve the issue. For someone who is renting out VPS servers, it really shouldn’t be an issue to renew your SSL certs on time…
