eNetSouth - $22/Year 160MB OpenVZ VPS in Birmingham

Updated December 2011 — Both eNetSouth.com and eNSCloud.com stopped resolving since 11 November 2011. It has been confirmed that Brandon has done a runner.

eNetSouth Brandon from eNetSouth had survived a tornado, moved their Alabama servers to a new location (HiWAAY in Birmingham), and is back offering more deals! Here is one yearly OpenVZ offer for $22/year (Direct sign up link).

  • 160MB memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Instant activation if passed fraud test and made the payment. Co-lo servers. Test IP: 216.180.128.10. Birmingham has pretty good South America connectivity according to Brandon.

eNetSouth is also now offering OpenVZ VPS in both San Jose CA (with 8×8) and Chicago IL (with ColoCrossing). $7/month gives you

  • 768MB memory
  • 30GB storage
  • 1500GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Direct order link for Chicago IL or San Jose. Finally, eNetSouth Cloud is also offering a special new VMWare package in Dallas TX. For $6.95/month you get

  • 512MB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 1500GB/month data transfer
  • VMWare

Sign up link for this one. Servers with ColoCrossing in Dallas TX (test IP: 98.158.22.180). Do note that VMWare purchases don’t get instant activation, as accounts need to be manually setup.

Updated disclaimer: eNetSouth Cloud hosts one of my sites, LowEndTalk, yada yada yada.

Might wanna mention it’s Birmingham US, otherwise people may confuse it Birmingham in the UK.

Just bought one of these to try out, At less than £14 for 1 year figured what the hell.
Setup was instant although I never got any welcome emails, just paypal receipts, the automated setup did not seem to cope with my paranoid password, so could not login via ssh until I reset it through the control panel.

    Server performance seems ok.
Control panel says located in Chicago not Alabama though (not that that makes any difference to me).

Just answered my own questions :p

I ordered one, because I was looking for a cheap Chicago based vps (very good connectivity to europe).
I did have to wait a few hours before I got an answer on my first email, I think this had to do with the timezone difference.
However, the following emails where answered within a few minutes.

Great to see Brandon come back to post more offers! As usual, I have nothing but good things to say about eNetSouth. My VMWare VPS has been rock solid, and if any problems arise Brandon is straight on-the-ball. Out of all my VPSs, this is the only one I’d trust with mission critical applications.

I have had a vmware vps with ENS in San Jose for about 6 months now and have had decent uptime (it has only been down once for a few hours when they had a catastrophic simultaneous failure of several servers at their data center, and they brought replacement servers online more quickly than I would have thought possible) and excellent, consistent performance. I would agree with Steve that this is the only vps I use that I really trust.

Brandon has also been very pleasant to deal with for customizing the vps to my needs, you just have to recognize that vmware support is probably not going to be as quick as what we have all gotten used to with openvz providers and exercise a little patience.

I believe eNetsouth has been offering share hosting from Alabama. So, it is expending to VPS.
Also, Brandon offers vmware which some likes and some doesn’t.
I have not a lot to complain about my vmware account ( since Aug,6,2010)with enscloud at chicago colo crossing.

  12. I have had a few people that signed up that commented on the 4ms latency to Atlanta and the ~100ms latency to the UK on our Birmingham, AL nodes. So I have made the 1GB OpenVZ server in Birmingham, AL and San Jose, CA available for $7.00/mo!

I made this deal available for some and I wanted to offer it to everyone if wanted to be fair to everyone.

If you have already picked a 768MB @ 7.00 — open a ticket and I will upgrade it at those locations as well. The 160MB @ 22.00 year is still available in Birmingham of course. We still have several class C’s of IP’s out of there.

    Birmingham, AL 1GB link:
    https://clients.enetsouth.com/clients/order/?pid=15&skip=1

    San Jose, CA 1GB link:
    https://clients.enetsouth.com/clients/order/?pid=12&skip=1

I may have told LEA the wrong test IP’s so to be certain here they are:

    Birmingham, AL:
    216.180.128.10

    Sam Jose, CA:
    98.158.22.180

    Dallas, TX:
    209.192.9.183

    Thanks

  14. @dirk:

1GB in this context is being used to describe the RAM available to the customer.

In terms of bandwidth – all of our San Jose servers (OpenVZ and VMware) are gigabit. Dallas and Alabama are 100Mbit.

At this time we do not have any IPv6 connectivity. I know the locations we host out of are working on IPv6 deployments.

    • Could I use 999M ram all the time? :-p

      May 15, 2011 @ 11:47 pm | Reply
      • Sure — If you buy a GB you get a GB.

We have enough without having to oversell. The OpenVZ servers in Birmingham are quad proc/quad core @ 32GB RAM each. They are owned by us. We have many of them racked up (no joke) and and they are no where near being sold. Storage is 8 drive RAID 10 using real enterprise grade LSI storage adapters.

In San Jose the OpenVZ nodes are a mix of colo and dedicated all with the same datacenter we have been with since October of last year. They are dual proc quad core servers with a mix between 16GB and 32GB. We use Adaptec adapters there in RAID 10 configurations as well.

Maybe someone in here who has picked up a Birmingham and/or San Jose VPS will post some DD and Unixbench results.

I also recommended your hosting company to my friend who never recieved welcome email, he also wanted to buy extra IPs but no answer. Sorry for posting this here, but I experienced hosting company who refused to sign up with free emails and required whatever@domain,com email, through sign up process.

I’m pleased to hear that you enjoy the server. About the emails.. for whatever reason the PHP mailer used by WHMCS will refuse to send email. It’s random with the failure — It will do it sometimes and sometimes it fails. It does appear that it is now failing more than it is actually working. So the plan in the morning is to change the mailer to SMTP and hopefully that will take care of the mailout issue. In regards to your friend; if I have the right person he opened a ticket yesterday requesting 3 additional IP’s. I answered the ticket in WHMCS yesterday around 3:30 PM CDT. Tell him to login and look in the ticket when he gets time.

    Thank you!

Not sure if the SolusVM panel is what you’re looking for, but since I had problems finding it when I first signed up:

Automated emails seem to be broken at enetsouth. Nothing was sent, no account creation email, no welcome email, no bill, no receipt, no VPS setup info, not even to my spam folder, nothing is even listed in WHMCS’s “My Emails” tab. But I think my server was actually activated instantly after payment, even though it took a few hours for me to realize it.

You’ll find the IP of your server under “My Services”->Click the “Product Details” icon next to your server. It will list the IP and other info, and then under the reboot/shutdown/boot buttons are “Login details” which is your SolusVM login.

There’s no link there, but the front page of enetsouth.com has links in the top-right to both whmcs (“Client Area”), and the SolusVM panel (“Manage VPS”).

I’m pleased with my evz1024 in San Jose so far. Haven’t done much with it yet, haven’t been monitoring uptime or watching for performance spikes, but from what I’ve seen it has well above average performance for this price-point. 150MB/s for the usual 1.1GB dd fdatasync test, 44MB/s for cachefly downloads. CPU feels fast too.

      • Thank you for posting this to him. Very helpful.

Also, your right about the emails coming out of WHCMS. Sometimes they work and sometimes they fail. I changed from PHPmail to straight SMTP and it did not help it. Which it would not because its not even attempting to try. I need to get some help from them so I will open a ticket in the morning.

Thank you *very* much for the heads up. I will get this worked out tomorrow as well. We got the IP’s out of Birmingham in class C blocks so that will be easy for them to get updated. And about their captcha: yes, it sucks. Took me 3 times to get it right then I got throttled. *gasp*

And just to offer a little clarification we only moved our Southeast USA servers there from the storm. All of our other locations like Chicago, San Jose and Dallas will stay there and only there. I learned the hard way that not all DC’s are created equal. :)

  39. Won me over – 9ms ping from Atlanta, and it’s hard to find good service in the southeast for the low-end set (with Ubuntu available, no less). Thanks Brandon & Brian! Now to set up my custom deb packages and so forth…

    • Glad your happy Todd. Everything in Birmingham is a direct peer to Sprint in Atlanta, GA. There is also a QWEST OC heading North via Huntsville. Over two years ago when I decided to get back in the ISP business that is why I built services here starting out. My vision was to provide Atlanta connectivity with Alabama rent. Rednecks do it cheaper you know. :)

Everything was going good till April of 2010 and the Albertville EF4 tornado crushed some dreams. Then as irony would have it a year to the day almost we were impacted by the SE tornado outbreak. I had for the most part given up on doing anything down here because our Chicago and San Jose locations are doing so well. I had already put a small fortune in hardware/bandwidth here but infrastructure is so fragile up north. I worked for HiWaay in 2000 after selling my dialup ISP to them and I was part of the team that helped move in to the Regions Bank (formerly AmSouth) tower in Homewood.

The place is built like a fortress and all of the fiber and power is underground. Having diesel and natural gas generators is a plus to. So the day after this last outbreak I loaded up our servers and hauled them south. It was not cool almost running out of gas because everyone was sold out or had no power but we made it.

Over two years later we are finally doing what we set out to do.. Build a enterprise grade DC here. Rumor has it there are some amazing high end dedicated servers that will be for lease in the upcoming 7 to 10 days. Oh and expect some more LEB deals out of here too around the 14th.

      • Will those new offers have ipv6?

        June 10, 2011 @ 5:27 am | Reply
        • dirk, unfortunately, there is no decent v6 infrastructure in the southeast US yet. My [probably soon-to-be-former] Linode system, and my home network, both tunnel to the Hurricane Electric broker in Ashburn VA, which isn’t terrible in RTT, but not great either. (Their Miami location is closer as the crow flies, but all it does for most routes is hairpin back up to Ashburn.)

If eNS has a peering with Sprint, that could provide some routes, but it obviously wouldn’t be transit-level (full table). I think this is _mostly_ out of Brandon’s hands for a short while longer, but hang in there.

      • We are working on it. In case you cant tell my web design skills are limited. I have someone working on a new site for enetsouth.com, enetsouthhosting.com, enscloud.com and enetsouthcolo.com and they will be tied in with twitter, facebook and the likes. He will also be handling all of the PR matters. He is way better at dealing with the public than I am. I’m better off sitting in a dimly lit room banging away on a server. ;)

I was hoping to have it all tied in by July 1st – We will see. Lots of things to cover.
