LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

eNetSouth - $6.99 400MB KVM VPS in Birmingham

Updated December 2011 — Both eNetSouth.com and eNSCloud.com stopped resolving since 11 November 2011. It has been confirmed that Brandon has done a runner.

eNetSouth Brandon from eNetSouth has been busy… From what I’ve heard he has been building and testing new box for KVM. Anyway — here is the deal for the LowEndBox readers. $6.99/month for this KVM VPS:

  • 400MB memory
  • 45GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer
  • KVM/SolusVM

Direct sign up link here. Instant setup but the customers have to build their own instance from ISO. Servers in Birmingham, AL. 32GB node with 8x 2TB Hitachi drives in RAID10 configuration. 4 virtual CPU cores.

There are other offers Brandon sent to me:

  • LEBeVZ768$7/month
  • 768MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM
  • Sign up links for Birmingham AL, Chicago IL and San Jose CA
  • LEBeVZ160$23/year
  • 160MB guaranteed/200MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM
  • Sign up links for Birmingham AL
  • VMWare$15/3 months
  • 512MB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 1500GB/month data transfer
  • VMWare
  • Direct sign up link

For the VMWare plans, nodes are available in Chicago IL, Dallas TX and San Jose CA. They don’t get instant setups though (where the SolusVM-based OpenVZ/KVM plans are). From previous comments on eNS Cloud, they usually get set up within 24 hours.

Disclaimer: LowEndTalk.com is currently hosted on a VMWare VPS in Chicago sponsored by eNetSouth.

  1. Some fun with math, 8 x 2TB drives in raid 10 comes out to 4TB of space. Divide that by by 45GB and you can squeeze about 80 virtual machines on there without overselling the drive space. 32GB of ram divided by the allocated 400MB of ram gives you 80 virtual machines as well without over selling. Sorry I was bored.

      You get 8 TB in RAiD-10 ;)

      July 26, 2011 @ 1:49 pm | Reply
      • fail =(, yep you are correct 8 TB.

        July 26, 2011 @ 8:27 pm | Reply
        • Your right. You lose the space of 2 of the drives in a 4 drive RAID0+1 because of the mirror spindles. You only get the combined of the two striped spindles.

So four 1TB drives would give present a 2TB RAID0+1 volume to the OS.

  3. I’m new to this VPS thing, please, someone explain me what this means:

“Instant setup but the customers have to build their own instance from ISO.”

Which plan does this one apply to?

    • iKocka:

You need to install prefered OS trough VNC on your own. It aplies for KVM plans.

It’s not possible to have a 23$/year plan in San Jose?

    July 26, 2011 @ 3:24 pm | Reply
    • IP shortages and the costs involved with that location makes it prohibitive. It would be a loss (for us) because of the overhead. BuyVM (Francisco on LEB/LET) is a great company and with their owned IPv4 allocations they do not have the overhead. If you cant catch stock with them you can get it there.

        Thanks for your answer!

I’ve been trying to get a BuyVM machine for too long (I haven’t been very lucky!)

I only need a VPS to use as my own private VPN (with OpenVPN?), so I reckon I don’t need a fancy VPS. Bottom line is, since I’m in Asia atm I believe a machine on the west side would be my best bet and because I heard good things about your company, I wanted to give it a try. I thought about the 7$/month one, but the specs are kind of too much for what I’m going to use the VPS for, I guess.

Anyway, thanks again for clearing that up for me :)

If you ever come up with a low offer in San Jose (even if it’s higher than 23$ a year), please let us (low end box readers) know asap :)))

      • I do not have a CentOS6 OpenVZ template — yet. I will see if I can find one tonight.

I’ve got to finish the new Fedora templates as well. I’ve never got one to work 100% without some serious problem.

When you get a moment please email me at brandonc /at/ enetsouth.com. I ask because those specs/pricing are outside LEB ranges and I do not want to clutter this post with unrelated items.

However, I would like to express my hapiness while being a client and congratulate Brandon, because he never gave up on his clients and he didn’t fail to compensate them as well.

Keep proving the excellent service, Brandon.

Got one of the KVM plans. Never got the signup email, though all the details were in the panel, just didn’t realize it. A support ticket was answered quickly.

Word of warning: having setup Ubuntu Server before, the network aspect of setting this up was harder. The email provided the IP, netmask and gateway, but the box wouldn’t resolve DNS. No idea what the DNS should be, but I ended up plugging in Google’s DNS. Can anyone comment what it should be?

All right, Brandon, I’m willing to give this another shot. I have not been terribly happy with my VMWare server this year, and you guys definitely need to work on your built-in ticket system on ensCloud – often it feels like my tickets are vanishing into a black hole. But the server was nice when it was working properly, which it did until that issue with the hard drive corruption which apparently never got resolved properly.

Since the KVM one is the same price and its in a different datacenter closer to me, I’m willing to give it a try :) (would like to ditch the old one, though…)

    • Thank you for another shot. Drop me a ticket in WHMCS and let me know what you think.

About Chicago — We had some issues with a SAN in Chicago. Starting at the end of May 2011 and then another episode on a different SAN twice this month.

We found out post fact that the SAN solution we moved to did not support our infrastructure properly and have since moved back to the previous SAN.

The actual data for a VM on the SAN was never corrupted but when the iSCSI target path went “dead” and no longer responded the VM filesystem would get a little upset and it required some attention to resolve.

This is no longer a issue anymore nor will it be in the future.

    • This is what I get logged in to the KVM node. It’s the real deal. These are specs from a real server in production. Prior to the sale it was 300MB/s+..

From what I’ve seen the I/O is not this high in the VM. If I’m wrong correct me but both KVM and XEN emulate the storage (qemu). CentOS appears to be the worst because it uses the emulated /dev/hda (yes, emulated IDE) the other OS’s like Debian etc perform better. There is a driver you can load that makes the VM know its using a virtual I/O subsystem that improves VM I/O performance. It’s dramatic — a serious improvement. It’s late for me and I can’t rememeber the name of it.

      [juggernaut@216-180-128-6-bhm ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
      16384+0 records in
      16384+0 records out
      1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 6.97002 seconds, 154 MB/s

      [juggernaut@216-180-128-6-bhm ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=16k count=16k conv=fdatasync
      16384+0 records in
      16384+0 records out
      268435456 bytes (268 MB) copied, 1.82932 seconds, 147 MB/s

      Some other stats for you:

      [juggernaut@216-180-128-6-bhm ~]# uptime
       02:55:44 up 41 days, 23:56, 1 user, load average: 1.25, 1.74, 1.75

Notice no swap is being used. The RAM usage is in cache and buffers. There is only around 10/15GB of real RAM sold on this box.

      [juggernaut@216-180-128-6-bhm ~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached

I’ve just read a bunch of articles / howtos on google about Virtio on centos.

But none managed to explain how to install disk IO drivers in a way that I could understand .. or see. All mentioned the network part. Maybe I overlooked some but..

Will you help me with a small guiding to where I can find a step-by-step guide to install network & disk virtio drivers ??

          August 1, 2011 @ 10:08 am | Reply
        • virtio must be enabled on the node server for your VPS configuration.

          (SolusVM supports custom config)

      • @Brandon Can you enable virtio for a KVM instance and provide the output?

        August 1, 2011 @ 10:57 am | Reply
        • KuJoe:

Keep in mind that enabling virtio will break other options/features in SolusVM from what I remember Tim (Hostigation) say. For example: you will be unable to mount or unmount an ISO without the host’s involvement.

Well.. then it seems to be up to Brandon.

I would be interested to try it out on my KVM VPS ..

          August 1, 2011 @ 11:45 am | Reply
  35. This is the official link for Virtio:

    http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Virtio

I believe the reason why it breaks the ISO mount is because SolusVM presents as /dev/hd[whatever] and once you go to Virtio it presents as /dev/vd[whatever] ..

So the OS becomes clueless to the presented ISO.

Some other comments about KVM/XEN .. I’ve never really been impressed with the I/O performance in both of those. I had great hopes of putting XEN out here for you all but I’m stuck in the CentOS world and the only upstream was 3. something which is old. I was able to get a pvops 2.6.32 kernel and XEN 4.1 compiled from source but then the network would never come up on the host node. I/O performance was better in a XEN environment @ 4.1 but there were so many other jacked up problems that I wrote it off as a basket case.

I understand the newer distros like with 2.6.32 kernels take away a lot of the headache.

My vision right now unless it changes is that you will never see us be a XEN provider. I wish that KVM would quit emulating IDE with qemu.. The legacy IDE stuff on serial interfaces is junk.

    Brandon

    • Don’t get me wrong — I love the isolation vs container based (a’la’ OVZ) but I miss the I/O performance. You get what the host node has as the storage subsystem presented to the container. So if the host node has good I/O you will have it to .. That is until your neighbor starts thrashing disks or the node is in a overcommitment state.

Dear Brandon, eNetSouth, please answer.

Refund Term is described 1 month only not 3 months, TOS:
    1.2. Termination Policy
…if you terminate your receipt of Services prior to the end of the first thirty (30) days of the Initial Term, you are entitled to a refund of the fees you paid in advance for the monthly Services…
But this is the three-montly Service, then what is a term for this, for expample
…if you terminate your receipt of Services prior to the end of the first ninety (90) days of the Initial Term, you are entitled to a refund of the fees you paid in advance for the three-monthly Services…?

In “eNetSouth Account Creation | Step 3” Service Type:
    eNS Linux Cloud VPS – 512MB RAM – 20GB Storage – 1500GB Monthly Transfer $28.00 /every six (6) months
But in Step 4 this service:
    Linux Cloud VPS 384MB RAM 20GB Storage 1500GB Transfer (6 Months) $28.00 /semi-annualy
    I.e. 512MB becomes 384MB
Does it mean that no 512 for $28 semi-annualy, such is only 384 instead?

On the issue of refund in Terms. In addition, “http://www.enscloud.com/products/cloudvps/” also contains “No Risk: All services have monthly pricing and a 30 day money back satisfaction guarantee.”
But how, what is the procedure, if the pricing term of the order of at least 3 or 6 months?

I have the same issue as others with VMWare 512 $15/3 plan. Bought it on Aug 3, and it is still “in provisioning”. It’s coming up to 2 days now (48 hours), as I type this. Not a good start.

If you need a server in a hurry, this would not be the plan for you.

I purchase a plan last week (KVM for AL location) and have found response times to not be the best. Further, my network connection on my guest keeps going down. I set up a cron script to ping a public server once every minute and write the results to a log file if it could not be reached (then restart the network).

That is on a brand new installation running only sshd. I opened a ticket detailing the problem and Brandon said it could not be reproduced (blaming on my installation of unsupported gentoo). The above is a brand new installation from there Ubuntu image with no additions or subtractions (other than sshd). I wrote a detailed report on the problem via ticket with “high” priority. Currently, this is day three without a response.

Oh, and the interesting thing about the network going down is that I can still ping the gateway … but cannot get out of the host system to the net. Unfortunate.

I will keep you all updated, but I cannot recommend this host.

  46. @Travis — I tried to replicate your exact problem. I just can’t. I don’t see it with my testing .. you get the idea. I’m sorry that we could not do business. Maybe one day.

@everyone else: There was downtime with our services Wed. evening/night. We had a problem stemming from abuse/attacks on the network. I have updated our customers in private as to what the exact situtation was and what has been done to prevent it in the future. Feel free to contact me if needed.

@beeohm: All of that is automated between SolusVM/WHMCS. If you have a problem log in to WHMCS and let us know. I will be working tonight to at least 2:00 AM — So you have all night to reach me if needed.

    Brandon

    hi Brandon,

as you dont reply via email i have to post it here.

Here’s my short story with eNet:

8/1 – paid for server (eNetSouth: Thank you for your payment!), invoice #3597

    …under provision status…

    8/4 – opened a ticket (3 days passed, provisioning)

…was told it would be up and running shortly, it never did…

8/5 – requested refund, you replied “No problem at all. I will get this refunded to you in a few moments.” (4 days since payment made)

8/6 – you asked for my paypal email for refund (you couldn find it for some reason), i sent requested info

    …no reply…

8/9 – i reminded you about my existence via email (8 days after payment)

    …no reply…

8/11 – i reminded you again (10 days after payment)

    …no reply…

8/13 – sent one more email to support and your personal email address

    …no reply…

seeing your comments here (8/12, 8/14) and having no alternatives i just want to ask you here – is it ok doing business this way?

i wont die from losing $15 – keep it if you want, i only dont get why?
i was even politely apologizing in my first email for leaving and asking for refund – because i couldnt wait 5 days of provisioning vs promised 24 hours… i really should grow smarter now… my learned lesson is you get what you pay for. thank you.

    Danil

ps. Burst.net – provisioned my vps in 2 hours on Sat, replied to first ticket in 20min (before the server even was set up).

    • I refunded the wrong person because I asked you clearly what email address you used and you said it was your gmail account. Instead it was your service@z????.com that made the payment. I picked the one I had to assume was you to avoide a public pissing match like this.

Check your PayPal now since I found it based on your company name.

Have fun with your current provider! ;)

On a bright side, just because Brandon was incompetent not to provide me a test file of my desired location, I went for another provider when I was considering this offer. Glad that I did.

Seems like his on solo journey and does what he pleases as he is posting LET and yet completely ignores posts like frantisheq.

  55. Sara — Must be “Slava” .. Who had service and we supported then you did not pay a invoice after repeated late notices.. You ignored a disconnection notice then you snook a payment in and wanted to rock on even after it had went so long without payment point that we deleted your server AND ACCOUNT! We have no record of what you had, want — anything. I did not tell you to pay a old invoice. We wrote it off. I can assume we can respond to PayPal explaining that we will keep a percentage to cover the use of your old server before we finally cut it off. Seems like we let it go on 2 weeks before we even finally gave up and delted it all.

Boris — You signed up, paid then demanded a full refund because connectivity was slow to you. Did you not try the test IP? Did you not see latency then? Did we provide you a server? Is that server still running? Yes, we provided. Yes, it is still running.

We replied to your ticket asking why you wanted a refund. Typically we do not refund if we have done everything we are supposed to do. If we have a severe node issue or a outage OK.. I can see that. However, this is not try before you buy.

I can even justify a partial refund on this but you demanded full? We were out service and time to provide you IN FULL what you requested. What do you suggest we do? Just eat it?

So no, it is not a no refund, no reply situation. It’s a “customer screwed up and the provider does not want to deal with your waste of time” situation.

    Regards,
    Brandon Crawford

      > Is that server still running?
Nope, I requested cancellation in the second day and it was satisfied.
      Also, from TOS:
      > Notwithstanding the foregoing, if you terminate your receipt of Services prior to the end of the first thirty (30) days of the Initial Term, you are entitled to a refund of the fees you paid in advance for the monthly Services, not including any setup fees or used portion of the service.
So act like your TOS says.

Thanks for assuming I am someone I’m not.
I’ve never not paid an invoice for services from you.
Perhaps try reading what I wrote above and read my emails instead of getting defensive?
I didn’t get to use a server I paid for, and I was charged twice for the privelage. Not sure why this warrants being ignored then insulted.

Support is bad here. Sometimes they respond and solve issues really quick, and sometimes just ignore problems totally. I signed up for VMWare VPS and they installed wrong OS (Ubuntu 10.10 instead of 10.04), I opened ticket, sent 3 emails to support and Brandon personally, and nothing was done yet. More than a week passed already.

    • Actually — I’ve been listening to the complaints on the support side. Brian Hayes who has been doing part time support for me on and off for over a year was hired full time last Friday. His primary role will be to get the support concerns under control.

We need to fill a part time position to fill the gaps as well. Maybe you would be interested in that?

Well, enetsouth does not meet even their own TOS, which I quoted in previous post. That is quite sad

    October 3, 2011 @ 3:56 pm | Reply
    • No, I will meet it with you. Rest assured the TOS will be updated to reflect a refund will be offered if there is a issue we can’t resolve with you or we have a unscheduled outage.

It’s almost like going to buy a car and then find out you do not want it because I can’t get 40 MPG.. I’ve drove it for a couple of days put a few miles on it but even though I had every ability to see that it was only a 20 MPG car .. I’m going to go to the bank and raise a stink who gave me a loan on the car because I expected 20 more MPG.. In your case lower latency to where you are.

We provided you with **EVERYTHING** we said we would. Buying the wrong product is not my problem.

I will be terming your server later today and issuing a refund via PayPal.
