eNetSouth - $7 2GB OpenVZ VPS in San Jose

Updated December 2011 — Both eNetSouth.com and eNSCloud.com stopped resolving since 11 November 2011. It has been confirmed that Brandon has done a runner.

eNetSouth Brandon from eNetSouth has just put up some new servers at SoftLayer in San Jose CA, and asked me to “catch us off guard”. So here’s the deal from them. With this sign up link, $7/month gets you this:

  • 2GB memory
  • 50GB storage
  • 1500GB/month data transfer on 1Gbps
  • 1x IPv4 + 1x IPv6
  • OpenVZ/SolousVM

Those are powered by Xeon E3-1270 Sandy Bridge CPUs. Test IP: 50.23.74.242. Instant activation, subject to IPv4 availability from upstream.

eNetSouth has grown quite a bit since Brandon started working full time on it. Now they have Brain working as full-time support there and Miguel doing part-time between colleges, so hopefully the ticket turn-around time would be shortened.

Disclaimer: LowEndTalk, the community website, runs on a VMWare server sponsored by eNetSouth.

  2. “Instant activation”
Ordered one at 9:40 EDT and I don’t have it yet. I had manual activation go faster than this.

    • Hehehe. I’ll see what Brandon says. Maybe they have already exhausted their current IP allocation and waiting for more from upstream?

        > they have already exhausted their current IP allocation and waiting for more from upstream?

Yeah especially those scarce IPv6 IPs, I wonder how can they possibly allocate a dedicated IPv6 address to every VPS, a whole ONE IPv6 ADDRESS at no charge, what a great offer, not something you come across every day. Is that even sustainable in the long run, what if they will run out??? :P

      • No, I foolishly set the wrong block to the wrong nodes. When they were trying to auto create it would not because of “no available IP’s” .. Once I found my mistake its OK now.

Don’t overload. I would love to see a 2GB offer under $7 actually be successful enough and not deteriorate within a month.

Then again, I just don’t see how its entirely possible with a 1Gbps link, 1.5TB and such. Hope it ends out well.
(It’s probably possible, but it just doesn’t look like it)

  9. I really want this offer to actually be stable and usable but I just can’t see it happening :|
I’ll come back in a month to see how it all turned out then decide :P

    October 6, 2011 @ 4:03 am | Reply
    • It’s stable:

      dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
      16384+0 records in
      16384+0 records out
      1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 3.63168 s, 296 MB/s

And yes, that is with enough load and singups coming in to make WHMCS and SolusVM beg for mercy. At the rate sales are going this offer will not make it through a couple of days much less a month. ;)

Why would you want to stick with a company that can’t fork the bill on 3 other colocations but is barely squeaking by on softlayer fee’s?

If you’re going to use it for anything important at least keep daily backups.

Pitty BTW the direct creditcard option is gone, now have to use Paypal. An email to remind me to pay each month would also be nice, but maybe it’s an option I’ve missed somewhere.

Happy customer, my server is a little flaky and the control panel recently was reskinned.

        October 13, 2011 @ 1:20 pm | Reply
        • Joel, I had to turn it off for new signups. Stolen card issues was just too much to deal with. We have always had a problem with fraud signups. I don’t know if everyone deals with it like we do. I’m certain a lot of providers have their fair share of it but there are at least 1 per day on the VMware side. Sometimes more.

Customers want everything *instant*. To give that and not sit on a signup until we can check maxmind, IP’s, email it’s just best to let it be PayPal only. I remember getting the authorize.net account was cakewalk but to get the merchant account it was a pain. Credit checks, etc.. You have to actually be a real company.. Shocker.

Anyways over the past 60 days we were hit with around a 4k fraud involving hot credit cards. They got around maxmind by purchasing with proxies in around the location of the stolen cards. The merchant saw the chargebacks and placed a 100% hold on all transactions and then was still hitting our checking account at the same time. So due to the fraud they were keeping the real money and draining us dry. Finally, they released it but after paying the chargeback fees and having to wait 45 days for the income from legit customers — it hurts.

I still allow existing customers to use their cards but I will not accept any new signups on the OpenVZ side with credit cards. On the VMware side I check them out before I run them because the accounts are not instant setup.

All of the bad press we get from taking so long on that end of the business is exactly from that. I just can’t absorb a 4-5k kick in the head due to fraud. $7.00 is pocket change but $7.00 x how ever many fraud signups plus $15.00 per chargeback and my time filling out the forms it gets real.

I know it’s SPAM contracts and bot-nets but I can’t understand why people would find it that lucrative to do fraud on a VPS.

Anyways — that is the deal with credit cards on signups.

I can’t reply to your comment, but I’ve got an existing KVM account and can’t pay my monthly bill by credit card. Paid that way the first time that way though. Understand the fraud I guess, but I am a current customer so what you say doesn’t match my payment options.

On a side note, my KVM server went down… Was happy, not so much anymore, but I sent a ticket.

This node that we are filling now is running CentOS 6. I understand there is a possible OpenVZ kernel issue with CentOS 6. I know a script was sent out today in a update to run if you have kernel issues. We have not so for now it has not been ran. If needed we will run it and at worst case there is a CentOS 5 node that is identical and ready that we can migrate to if CentOS 6 becomes a problem.

The only sticks on the market are $400 – $500/ea and if you bought those that’s retarded :P

Francisco, 8gb ddr3 server dimms are relatively inexpensive (compared to ddr2), like under $100/stick:

          http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139378

Even still, just 32gb per node makes this deal sound financially hard to sustain unless considerable overcommitment is involved.

          October 6, 2011 @ 7:05 am | Reply
        • Not quite.

You need DDR3 unbuffered ECC which aren’t on the market yet :) The biggest sticks are 4GB for consumers to buy, anything bigger (like 8GB) need to be special ordered from samsung or some wacky named company that starts with an A. Either way, those companies are through the roof per stick.

Well, that is really surprising about the unbuffered memory since I’m used to server motherboards using registered. But here are some 8gb unbuffered at around $215 a stick:

          http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211564

It does seem far from cost effective and maybe Brandon knows something we don’t ;-). I think I’d have used a different cpu that could use registered memory, or a MP server with more dimm sockets.

        • That’s desktop RAM :)

Anyways, It isn’t about that the RAM, when available, will be well priced or not. It’s about that the RAM isn’t readily available. We went through this same ordeal when we did our building in August and ended up using xeon 5520’s instead.

In WHMCS after the order is placed and you try to pay with PayPal there are reports of PayPal reporting a error.

The resolution to this is to edit your address and change:

    Country: ‘CN’ to ‘HK’

This will allow PayPal to function without error.

Holy fucking hell, haven’t seen a more outrageous bean counters in a long time. Well at least no one should cry about fork error and no tickets to submit as this as probably as a high as it could go rofl.

Ok so I’m an idiot, please explain, if you do not use bean counters for memory management, why aren’t you providing centos6/vswap vps that has a better memory accounting?

      October 6, 2011 @ 8:40 am | Reply
      • I wish I could tell you I had some magic sauce poured on the servers but the truth is this one is CentOS 6. vswap is not enabled but also the plan does not allow burst it is set to = RAM which would make burst = 0.

So I think that OpenVZ on CentOS 6 does this by default and expects vswap to be present. That is why these figures are showing.

      • What kind of performance in I/O are you seeing from the client end? The node is loaded now so this should be close to real world performance. I know the connectivity in testing all last week was 100MB 4 out of 5 times I tested it. Then it would be something around 60MB or so from time to time.

Also, on the plan setup in SolusVM I did not set IPv6 = n (n = number of IPv6) so we will have to go back and assign those. Which is not OK but it will be made correct. I copied our 2GB plan template and it did not have it.

Drop ioping on your box and see if it is still straight across the board when you get a chance. DD shows a good write statistic but sadly users containers do more than sequential writes 24/7.. Random r/rw statistics truly prove a stable underlying storage subsystem.

    • No, they are leased servers that I requested the specifications on. I do not think that SoftLayer even allows colo. I think their entire model is built around certain base build servers that they pre-rack and customize for anything over the base setup. I’ve never seen colo being a option.

When they were ev1, they used to. Single, racks, and cages.

They pushed you into also leasing the server hardware when you did so and/or a hands on contract.

Never followed up on that. As I write this, I’m wondering how they handled third party access to the datacenter.

  42. Update @ 4:09 AM CDT:

Currently all paid invoices have been provisioned but two and we are working out issues on those.

I have disabled instant setup because when 5, 6 or however many were coming in at once it was causing a nasty load issue.

We are watching and setting them up as they come in during the “rush”.

        • Actually I have to agree with Sleddog. Risking the unwarranted negative response you gave him for pointing out what your own website text says, there’s no mention there of any exceptions. While you make no guarantee of 100% uptime, from what I read, there shouldn’t be any down time. Especially if you’re promoting your RAID service.

If I had a system with you, I would be wondering the same thing and pointing to that part of the text as well.

As an aside, that page needs some editing as there are at least a couple of spelling and grammatical errors on there. I see at least two just in the bit copied and pasted up above.

If all you’re going to do is accuse me of libel, don’t bother. I’ll just put you down as yet another host who can’t be bothered to remember what’s on their own site. We’ve had a few of those around here in the past.

I do hope you’re better than that though. Your track record shows that you normally are.

        • OpenVZ memory can be ram or swap space. You could set the “guaranteed” memory limit to a few TB without issues as long as nobody used it.

        I thought about it again, 123systems’ recent $15/yr 256M offer didn’t make much sense cost-wise too, that calculates to $120/yr -> $10/month for 2GB.

Which means a 32GB node would only get $160/month of revenue.

If such pricing is possible, wouldn’t (re)selling dedicated server viable too?

It looks like the E3 processor’s chipset is unusual in requiring that very expensive ram. Newegg has a special on 8gb registered ecc server dimms for $70 each (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139280); they just won’t work with the E3. You can get a 2-cpu AMD motherboard that takes 16 dimms ($1120) and use two 8-core processors (AMD 6128) for $250 each, add motherboard ($400 Supermicro), box, storage etc., and you have a 16-core 128gb server in the $4k range that can run 100’s of VPS’s and pay for itself quickly. That sounds like a much more attractive LEB host than this E3 stuff.

I do wonder what people do with 2gb VPS’s. I just have a 192mb vps which I might use for a VPN proxy, a personal web site that 2 or 3 people might read, that sort of thing, so I’d use very little ram and I won’t notice overselling. But if I sprung for a 2gb VPS it would presumably be because I actually wanted to use the whole 2gb (say for a search engine) and in this case overselling would make the system useless.

I am confirming Nick’s claim that the emails are ending up in Gmail’s spam folder. This is highly disturbing as I use a few email accounts and have gmail forward them to my main, and this doesn’t happen because it is marked as spam, I think you might want to look at how or why that’s happening eNetSouth.

If you terminate your receipt of the Services prior to the end of the Initial Term or the Renewal Term, whichever is then applicable, (a) The Company will not refund to you any fees paid in advance of such termination and (b) you shall be required to pay 100% of The Company’s standard monthly charge for each month remaining in the term, unless otherwise expressly provided in this Agreement. Notwithstanding the foregoing, if you terminate your receipt of Services prior to the end of the first thirty (30) days of the Initial Term, you are entitled to a refund of the fees you paid in advance for the monthly Services, not including any setup fees or used portion of the service.

Brandon, does it mean if I terminate the service now I can get a pro-rata refund? Or otherwise?

  80. Good Morning everyone.

With the pending orders left for us to complete we will be within 2 IP’s of exhausting our additional IP pool. So at this time I have pulled stock.

A huge thanks to everyone who chose to use our service during this special.

Pending orders (9 of them) are being setup now. There have been questions about IPv6: We will add these manually to each account. Tun module is giving a few issues for customers wanting to run VPN. This is being worked out as well.

There will be updates/solutions to these updated to your tickets today.

I got a very swift refund for the server, just minutes after my ticket.

I am quite satisfied with the speed and i/o of the server, but I think minecraft is just too heavy for it, which is the reason of my refund.

It will do good with hosting static forum/wordpress for a large number of connection, or shareware download website.

  95. Everyone — Having some abuse issues that I am clearing up.

There were users sustaining 20, 30+ load in their containers which I can’t find any reason why that would be needed.

I am pausing those until we can speak with the clients.

Also, appears we finally got hit with the CentOS6/OpenVZ kernel issue. I am on the node now over IPMI working that issue out.

I appreciate everyone’s patience while we work on these problems.

    • Your right but the amount of containers starting a minute apart of each other is a decent test of load.

Granted, it’s not going to be as much related with dynamic load of usage so we will see.

      October 7, 2011 @ 10:49 pm | Reply
      • Another issue is there is NO REASON for a user to be holding 20+ load. I’m sorry but if you need that much all of the time then maybe we need to look at offering them something else.

Do any of you feel I am wrong for making that statement?

  106. I just found another huge problem while look at each customers VM’s in SolusVM. I found this scenario with multiple containers. This is a copy paste of a customer on the node:

    Disk Space: 7%
1.33 GB of 20 GB used / 18.67 GB free

    Memory: 0%

41.26 MB of 9.77 TB used / 9.77 TB free

This is a client who was migrated to this new node from our older CentOS 5 node. It seems that if burst is present on a container YOU MUST use vSwap.

These 2GB plans have no burst RAM but our other accounts do. They were migrated over from 5 which this option is not available.

I see a problem with a container being able to use 8TB of RAM. Of course there is not 8TB to be used but in theory one of these can use 100% of the RAM because there was no enforcement of the quota!

So either this is a SolusVM BUG or a left over of the migrations — either way I am opening a ticket with SolusVM.

    • OpenVZ on CentOS 6 is is simply not ready for E3’s. The biggest bug I ran into was the CPU core lockup. The vSwap issue is easy, if it has none like this 2gb plan, just assign 1mb of vSwap, burst does not work on CentOS 6 nodes. Or downgrade the nodes to CentOS 5, sucks but much less headache in the long run.

      October 8, 2011 @ 1:05 am | Reply
      • By CPU lock do you mean locking at 100% CPU hangs? Or lke loss of clock?

        October 8, 2011 @ 1:13 am | Reply
        • CPU core lock as in the node is unresponsive at the console and you see a scrolling CPU #6 failed to do what it is supposed to, been a few months since I ran it, and I try to put my nightmares behind me til I see others having success. It would run smooth as silk for 20-23 hours, never could get 1 day of uptime out of it with any type of load on the node. With 5 or less containers on it while I was testing it was rock solid for a week, once I added containers, never saw a 24h uptime.

  108. @Tim – I have not seen that yet. What I’ve seen is loads 100+ and it is by processes running under the solusvm user. Today I was ready to roll back to CentOS5 but I feel better about 6.0 now with some of the changes I’ve made. I wish you could remember which version of the OpenVZ kernel you were using at the time.

    Currently I’m at:

    Linux ovz6.enetsouth.com 2.6.32-042stab037.1 #1 SMP Fri Sep 16 22:18:06 MSD 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Complied 9-16 (less than 30 days).

    October 8, 2011 @ 1:49 am | Reply
    • There were probably 3 or 4 kernels released over the time I was testing, and it was the week that CentOS 6 was released and I was helping to beta SolusVM with it and KVM, KVM has been rock solid for me on CentOS 6, but ovz I gave up on for another day. The node I used for testing has over 30 days uptime at this moment running CentOS 5 under full load.

It was always some random process running in a users container that would cause the core lockup, never the same thing twice so nothing to point a finger at. This there ovver at WHT touched on the problems, a few were experiencing it at the time

      • Worst case is we roll back to 5.6 and migrate. However, I want it at 6.0. I can safely say after some changes today it acting better with how it adjusts to load.

        October 8, 2011 @ 2:24 am | Reply
        • The 6 kernels are a nightmare. There was some really old kernels, back in the BETA stages, that were OK but they had NO way to cap the amount of cores a VM had access to. Using the ‘cpulimit’ stuff was supposed to help but it was still possible for a VM to rip a node heavily with a lot of spawned CT’s.

We’ve kept an eye on the RHEL6 kernels for OVZ but they scare us at this point. Even some of the newer RHEL5 kernels are sketchy and can be crashy too.

I don’t know what the OVZ devs have put out or what the RHEL devs patched that broke things but it has been quite the mess for a while. Personally, we’re using a kernel build from June or so and haven’t had any issues since :)

Normally we’ve always tried to be ahead of the game on kernels/features but people can have their RHEL6 kernels all they want, we have NO interest in rolling up any time soon (likely not even this year).

  114. Update on the current issue:

Hardware was replaced earlier today to resolve a kernel panic issue. The same issue occurred again. We are now replacing (moving to) all new hardware. Same specs but saving time on trouble shooting exactly what this is.

If it happens again we will roll out CentOS 5.6 on the original (same spec hardware) server and migrate to it to hopefully resolve this issue once and for all.

    • During one of the crash events over the past two days SolusVM stopped “accounting” for containers. It was 100% everything for everyone. A simple script was applied to the node to set accounting for the containters. Why it set 2000 instead of 2048 I do not know. Also it seems some containers were set to 2 cpu instead of 4. The values are defined at the top of the script and applied the same to everyone. These can be set back now in SolusVM which was not possible yesterday.

A dumb question, is it due to the kernel or CentOS? Personally I don’t like CentOS much because of its delay and lack of support. If possible you may try SL on host instead.
But as I said it might be a dumb question. I’m not an admin.

  155. Just to update everyone — New identical nodes were provisioned this evening with CentOS 5.7 x64 and 2.6.18-274.3.1.el5.028stab094.3… 2.6.32el Cent,SL,RHEL patched OpenVZ kernels are simply broken. Period.

Everyone’s containers are currently migrating to the new nodes now. Have been for a couple hours now. They are live migrations unless they error then they are powered off before the migrate. I did not want to risk restoring containers manually.

This without a doubt will end the random stability issues.

Sigh, as an Arch fan 2.6.18 kernel is a nightmare for sure. I just fixed the tty problem on Arch after update. Interestingly my VPS is at UptimeVPS but the solution was found on RAMHost forum and now I am discussing with eNetSouth. I’m going to trouble shoot another issue on Arch. Man I think OpenVZ should BAN all Arch users forever, so that we can simply use Xen or KVM, LOL.

      • I have to agree with you 100%.

My current issue is that I feel so let down with CentOS now and even OpenVZ to a extent. I know that OpenVZ kernels are built on RHEL kernels so it really does not matter much about your distro unless it is RHEL. What has me so mad is that they are taunting people to move to the 6.0 kernels. Calling them stable. I put my trust in the fact that it indeed was and no — not by a long shot.

I was reading where CentOS is basically in shambles and updates are taking forever. The big move now is to Scientific Linux. I tried that as well with this but it simply is a OpenVZ kernel issue that is carrying bugs from the 6.0 RHEL kernel. It’s all broken.

I’m not supposed to complain because it is open source. Right? Sure, it is open but people are depending on it functioning and it simply does not.

        I embrace 2.6.18 with open arms. :)

        • Well, there are OVZ templates that work on OVZ for anyone, but the latest/greatest glibc’s require a .37 kernel or something insane like that. While the OVZ devs have tried to backport certain features to make debian/etc work well, I don’t think the arch devs are able to really compile glibc different this time :(

If demand is high we can reprovision the previous two servers that were migrated from that can be setup with the proper functioning OS/Kernel. This would allow for many of these to be available. We would need commitments to set this up. If interested, register and open a ticket requesting one of these servers. If enough are received a third (possible 4th) node can be added.

I know you have both been getting everything sorted with this part of your service but I am still waiting for my VPS server to be setup, I know I have had an email from both of you a few days ago saying you were setting it up that night or just finishing patching the server.

I have been waiting now for about 2 months to get this server setup I have logged tickets on your system that don’t get answered, all I want is a working server, I have even had 3 invoices for it :)

      @circus

I’m not insulting him. I’m just replying in a similar manner OP posted. If I can give specific date and other information, I’m not cooking up story – there is a history behind it.

LEB is not a support medium and I believe putting up one’s specific ticket number is similar to asking provider for a Quick support.

      @BH – eNetSouth

I suggest you read my earlier post again. I wrote – “It is slow to such an extent that anyone will feel that tickets are being ignored.” I didn’t say you are “ignoring” tickets. I also mentioned that initially I received one reply on 06/Oct/2011.

I gave polite reminders to look into the issue. You also acknowledged that you were aware of the ticket. Still, neither an update nor an announcement was made to clear the air.

Your original offer comes with one IPV6 address. I understand that you had some difficulty setting it up automatically. However, IMO, manual IP assignment should not take such a long time.

      October 12, 2011 @ 11:17 pm | Reply
      • I believe putting up one’s specific ticket number is similar to asking provider for a Quick support.

Considering how many false reviews and comments we have around here, doing something a simple as covering your ass by providing a ticket number seems to be a no brainer to me.

I’m not cooking up story – there is a history behind it.

That’s fine but if you’re not offering up even a single bit of proof of such, all we can do is assume that you’re telling the truth. Offer some proof and we know what you say is correct.

LEB is not a support medium

You’re right of course but even LEA says feedback is welcome. if a provider isn’t providing support and/or they’re having problems with their servers, that’s feedback and I don’t think there’s a single person here who doesn’t want to hear that.

@drmike, did you ever provide any proof that you are a Real Dr?

Says the commenter with a fake name. i post with my real name and a real email address. Until you do the same, don’t even think about throwing stones.

When 3 of us are saying something it may not be entirely false.

No, not really. We’ve had idiots here try this before all commenting from the same IP address about other providers. LEA has outed them before. It’s been done.

And I never said it was false. I said your method of communicating your problem(s) was an issue.

        I’m not insulting him

Actually you did (Those doctorates were the worst things I ever did.) but I’m used to it on this site. You’re just brain dead like many of the f0lks here.

Is it possible to enable “Central Backup” in SolusVM? I found it’s very useful as you can snapshot your current system and then re-install difference distros before finally deciding which one to go with. For example Arch is my favorite but seems on OVZ it doesn’t have the best disk i/o.

  181. Good news about OpenVZ and 2.6.32el kernels.

This was the only bug left in the kernel that was causing stability issues that I found. I opened this Monday AM and as of last night it is now patched upstream.

    http://bugzilla.openvz.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2039

So in theory — (I don’t have the balls to try it after the beatdown I took last weekend) OpenVZ should now be stable with 2.6.32el host nodes.

      2.6.32-042stab036.1

      Also it has VSwap.

BTW I found significant disk i/o difference between Arch & CentOS 6 on that VPS (Arch was only ~45MB/s while CentOS 6 is 150+MB/s). On your VPS Arch can get ~150MB/s, haven’t tried CentOS/SL yet.

Are you using gmail as well? Sometimes it’s too restrict. If the email sent by private server does not pass their test (not properly signed or the server is not listed as permitted in SPF record), gmail will put it into spam folder directly.

      • We don’t use SPF’s and I don’t have that problem with email coming from my servers and going to GMail.

They do look at rDNS though. They will mark as spam on those.

        October 14, 2011 @ 3:19 pm | Reply
        • danielfeng:

Right. I found SPF is much easier than rDNS as one may have multiple sites hosted on the same sever sharing same IP or mail server. In that case rDNS cannot cover all of them. If SPF is set then gmail won’t perform rDNS lookup.

I sign all emails with DKIM and also set SPF in DNS. In gmail both “mailed-by” and “signed-by” will show up.

Got my VPS, it seems good so far… There is one little mistake they made, as it is showing 1TB of BW and 40GB of disk, but I’m sure that they’ll fix it (I already sent in a low priority ticket).

Check your client area and see if your VPSes are active. If they are, you’ll see control panel username/password below the VPS information.

https://ovz1.enetsouth.com:5656/login.php is the link to the control panel.

They do appear to reply to their support tickets slowly. Can’t really confirm that as I never had the need to send one.

      @veer,

Probably you are not aware how PayPal treats this kind of transactions. According to PayPal these items are Virtual goods/intangible items. There is no PayPal protection for these kind of items. If any provider wants to be Nasty, all he has to do is to inform PayPal that the buyer bought an intangible goods. Buyer will then surely loose that dispute.

Credit Card Chargeback is probably better; in the sense that PayPal informs the same thing (i.e. intangible goods) to seller. So seller himself has to deal with the bank directly to resolve that dispute. However I haven’t tried that.

I paid through credit card using the paypal gateway.
Hence, I will raise a credit card charge dispute, rather than a paypal dispute.
Let paypal and enetsouth decide, who is willing to get screwed. I personally would like both of them to have it.

At this point, I’ll just file a dispute with my credit card bank and leave it at that. There is nothing more i am willing to do for $7.

Even if enetsouth gives a vps now, I won’t use it anyway and cancel it immediately.

The money spent is the cost of my decision to choose enetsouth. And fortunately, a much better provider stocked the very next day and I have all my requirements fulfilled for now.

As said earlier, I don’t have a paypal account.
I paid through a safe virtual credit card provided by my bank(through the paypal gateway) and my bank is the only place(Apart from LEB and enetsouth) that I raised a complaint.

    @LEA,

Looking at the way this whole fiasco is developing – probably you should also look into moving LET to another host for the following two reasons-

    1) Reliability.

    2) Reputation – A host which provides such a bad service should not be allowed to become a sponsor of LET.

Is it being oversold? The signup link is still working and I did notice a disk i/o performance decrease recently (almost 60MB/s less than before sometimes). I’m on ovz7 and I believe that’s the last node they have. I think on Oct 13th it’s already sold out but looks like more have been opened on the same node(s):

    Brandon – eNetSouth:
Depending on how things look with loads on the node.. I can possibly open up 5 more in stock. I do not want to lose 10 customers due to performance to get a couple more. Check in later this evening.

I have some IP’s in reserve that could be used.

    Brandon

I don’t think it’s a good idea to oversell at this time even if current load is okay. Not everybody has put their production sites on there and I believe most of them are still testing. Once they do the real job in the next couple of months, it will make the performance look really really bad.

PS: interestingly when I was about to post, the disk i/o seems back to normal.
    PS2: decreased again.
PS3: back to normal. okay you win, I’m gonna play PS3 now.

I don’t see issue with running a production site, with proper backup, serving few customers / users. My private mail server is running on a 7$ vps serving about 4 users. It’s performance is not great; but good enough for my 4 users. I’m not going to spend 50-100$ to get a dedi for such case.

This provider is sponsoring LET and because of this fact very few people would doubt that they will be unreliable.

I run a mailserver for 160 active clients. It has 540MB memory, performance is excellent, and it costs $18/month.

          But that really doesn’t matter.

My big concern here is that Enetsouth had built a nice niche market — quality VMWare VPSs at an affordable price — which few other providers could touch. Their reputable was growing. This site — lowendtalk.com — is testament and proof.

But then what do they do? Build on that? No. Instead they dive face-first into the massively oversold OpenVZ market, and compete with every kid who can charge two month’s budget server rental to the parent’s credit card.

Enetsouth is two guys. Right now they’re probably working double-overtime trying to put out fires resulting from this “fantastic” deal, rather than tending to their VMWare clients.

          I just don’t understand it.

  227. Reading through these comments amazes me at the rampant speculation and conspiracy theories.

My favorite is how anyone could think that someone could be a “runner” to anywhere with 7.00/mo accounts. No way..

In a nutshell there have been some problems I am dealing with eNetSouth. Over the weekend there were some problems with our services in Birmingham, AL which is what led to email problems. Now resolved.

The past day there are problems with our San Jose VMware. Between the rampant fraud, abuse and theft of services I am are exiting the VMware LowEndBox market. OpenVZ offers such as this one will not be a issue. VMware customers that are not using the VMware price tiers will not be affected but I have to draw the line with those losses somewhere.

I appreciate everyone’s patience while I get this sorted out.

It’s almost DEJA VU just that previous time you announced that you’re done with LEB. There is no excuse for few days disappearance and ignorance when things go wrong and VPSs was down… and your aggressive tone towards “impatient” clients won’t make you look better.

OK, since I read though the whole comments list, I finally knew what happened to my VPS. When I cannot connect to my host, I first submit a ticket to the support, and write email to them(continious about 4~5 days), no response totally. Finally I found them here–where I bought my VPS(vmware host offer), It’s so strange LEB is the support area of eNS customers…
But I also do not understand what Brandon mean. I payed the plan quarterly with credit card, there’s still about 1 month for the recurring payment. My host has been down for more than 1 week, so what should I do? Shutdown my server? I cannot connect it at all, and many usable data on it, how can I get them back? OR reboot my server, but 1 week+ passed, It’s still down, and there’s not any response to any of my tickets)…

It’s pretty obvious that it’s a billing dispute. Whenever they had DDoS attacks that hurt (the one on LET for instance), Brandon was on here explaining things pretty quick. At this point, though, even MrGeneral isn’t saying all that much.

8×8 is a reputable provider and they wouldn’t simply allow a hunk of their network/DC to be down without a good reason. It isn’t a SAN failure either since their OpenVZ offers are broken as well. Them suddenly posting this sale, along side the $15/y deals, screamed ‘we need cash, now’. Trying to get into the 2GB for $7/m market is stupid and devaluing a brand that had a pretty good name for itself.

I guess users on these 2GB plans should be happy that they’re based in Softlayer, but I’d be keeping backups.

I wouldn’t doubt if they do can all of their LEB priced users and just migrate everyone that was forking full prices to a single location (maybe in Chicago? i’m thinking likely their home state).

Yes, they did an ‘exit’ from the budget market quite a few months ago after Brandon ran himself off here due to a tiff with some pissed off customers. Though, even he admits that he was hot headed over it and handled it poorly.

I really can’t understand why someone would dip into the budget market if their ‘higher quality’ offerings were doing well.

I just hope LEA is keeping complete pulls of LowEndTalk for now.

Hmm.. I’d be willing to help him out also if the problem is just not enough time to answer tickets. It looks like either he has other obligations, or that he is swamped in technical issues. Should I bother contacting him? I could most likely spare a hour at least a day to help, and I don’t care about being paid… Just want some experience with this to be honest, and eSouthNet has good potential… At the very least I could clean up most of the low priority tickets for him.

He must type real slow… It’s normal to close/answer/process tickets that users create because their servers are down. There’s tools that let you do things like autoreplace “bu” with “It’s now backup, I will now close the ticket, thanks for your question”. That’s not the point. The point is “ignoring tickets” –> “ignoring downtime” –> “ignoring clients” –> “being a runner”. I believe most of the VPS users already have enough experience to handle everything, but how can you handle ANYTHING if you do not have access to any of your VPS and none of your tickets have been answered? If volunteers are needed in this business then we clients can also “voluntarily” pay for this service (meaning FREE services should be provided by default).

    October 20, 2011 @ 4:27 pm | Reply
    • JTR:

My point is that more support staff (paid or not) = more tickets answered = faster support times = better reputation.

Yes, many issues can only be solved by Brandon, but this would at least reduce the load on the ticketing system, as I’d imagine there’s quite a few simple problems that can be fixed easily… Like the wrong server being provisioned…

      • danielfeng:

Dude, it’s eNetSouth.com, not eNetSouth.org. It’s not open source or community stuff. How does “reputation” work for a business that even needs non-paid staff or volunteers to help them?

        • JTR:

They can pay for help, or some people might be willing to donate time for whatever reason. I’m not suggesting that anyone should be offering free labor to them.

Your point is that they shouldn’t have to ask for help, and yet they didn’t ask, I offered. I have a bit of free time that I’d like to put to a better use, and I want more experience in this area.

They’re swamped, I’m offering to help. Is there a problem with that? Yes, in a ideal company, they shouldn’t have these support problems, but that shouldn’t stop them from trying to improve it.

Should I be asking for money? That’s my decision. I’m not suggesting that people should be helping them for free. I value my time how I feel it should be valued, and I feel like helping them out.

I suppose that they are not that critical to you, perhaps you are happy to have some well specced servers on hand when you need them. But is that an excuse for poor administration on their part?

We have also had no luck reaching Brandon. The situation
is truly unfortunate. We would like to offer eNetSouth customers the ability
to get their data back as many have been reaching out to us. I’ve been
trying to communicate this to Brandon but for whatever reason I have been
    unable to reach him.

I’ve gone ahead and enabled on the switch ports to Brandon’s server farm for
a period of 24 hours. Hopefully your VPS will become reachable and you can
reclaim your data. More over perhaps Brandon will be able to reach our
billing group to settle his account.

I have to ask you if there is a chance we might be able to provide you VPS
services on our Zerigo cloud as you have reached out to us on the Zerigo
    support queue.

My concerns at this point is it might turn out like clubuptime:

      – Company goes bust
      – Users mass chargeback, draining the little bits left in the accounts if anything
      – Chargebacks cost the company $COST + ($25 $35) in fee’s
      – Only the people that chargebacked at the beginning got anything where as the rest wait hoping Matt gathers cash.

        • Brandon has been talking with customers who use and pay for the resources on that platform.

AFAIK, there has never been a denial that there was a money problem. Just getting it out in the open Brandon owes a chunk to ColoCrossing as well but it is being worked out.

If you want to really be a part of this instead of adding fuel to the fire why don’t you make a suggestion to deal with the problem that started this? At last count credit card fraud dating back to July pushing 8k and a merchant company who will not pay.

My suggestion 6 months ago was to exit this (Sub 15.00/mo accounts) and just deal with larger accounts. Why? To sell in this market and have any cashflow it’s nothing but a carrot on a stick. The clients expect good datacenters, 100MB/s+ I/O and 100% uptime as cheap as possible. You can pick three.

If they don’t get all 4 then the first thing they do is get on here or WHT and bad mouth. Then customers who want to spend real money with you wont because they think your only a LowEnd shop because that is all you are associated with.

I can tell without a doubt he is tired of chasing the dream at this point.

        • So what is you suggestion then to those of us who can provide all 4? I see a lot of griping about credit card fraud, so don’t take credit cards, I haven’t for a decade and missed what, 2 sales a year to it. Terminate service when they file any type of dispute and move someone into that space with cash to pay, simple resource management. Calling the whole LEB market a waste of time is unfair, maybe it is just a waste of your time.

        • There was denying though, when him and I had it out over the 32GB RAM in those nodes he was going on about how much his vmware stuff made and the openvz stuff is just for fun.

I”m hardly adding gas to it and there’s little I can recommend to help. Shedding all of the LEB people that were getting deep discounts would work, and if you get some seriously cheap colocation in your local town it might be worth it to just pull everyone that was paying full price to there and shed all of the other locations.

Wrong. If I had my guess you are one of the 28 outstanding abuse tickets open at Softlayer. Or your one of the wonderful people maxing out a 1GB port. Brandon instructed me to tell them to null the IP’s of the abusers and that is what I’m in the process of doing.

If you do the math from 17 days to the last reboot when the kernels issue was resolved you will see that the uptimes match.

This should not be hard to understand: Abuse it and you lose it.

Do not put words in my mouth. I never once said it was a waste of time. I can assure you that you do not have the datacenter costs we have either. Thinking back you have had a couple of issues with power at the hands of your DC. You do not have these problems with ColoCrossing, 8×8 etc.

    October 28, 2011 @ 10:15 pm | Reply
    • I’ll just add, if I was a customer, i’d take a power outage rather than 5 days without access to my services in two different locations.

You have high costs but that’s your own damn fault for not negotiating or simply picking expensive locations. You can get great facilities with awesome track records for very reasonable prices, you just have to look.

    • I never had those problems at CyberCon, nor now at QuadraNet, and I bet I pay a hell of a lot less for space and wire, and since I own my gear, guess what, I’m not running razor thin margins like the majority, I can take a hit now and then from fraud, but I can also move on, remove that client, and replace them with a paying customer.

You are not shining any light in my eyes when you are swimming in debt, leasing gear, and probably hoping for a pack of ramen noodles so you can eat tomorrow.

I do not know anything about that discussion except you were wrong. VMware is profitable on larger accounts. It has not been with LEB accounts for quite some time.

    • How can I be wrong when your own boss/whatever claimed otherwise?

I can only repeat what I hear from the horses mouth, nothing more kind sir :) I have no idea what your overhead costs are but I can safely assume 8×8 is one hellishly expensive location. What makes 8×8 better than, say, coresite in San Jose?

I can assume then that the vast majority of your vmware base was on the LEB’s then and that the bigger/full price accounts are only 100% profitable if you ditch the dead weight I guess?

      • I agree. It is what it is though. I know Jon @ ColoCrossing has been good to Brandon on all sides though. But there has always been a epic fail with with largest system there that simply due to the size its a hard fix.

It’s been known to ColoCrossing since the first 30 days of operation out of there. I know Brandon has just “ate it” for over a year because the only way to get it resolved would be in place swap/migrate. The last time it was being worked on he was so sick of one of their support people I don’t know how he kept cool. He had the call on speaker phone and I almost chimed in listening to Jerimiahs attitude. Brandon later told me “that out of fear of hosts getting mucked with he just let it go”

The largest single expense from there has been at less than 60% of it’s possible capacity simply because it could not perform. Rest assured they wanted that money though.

That is just one of the juicy bits. Just like when there was some hardware fails at 8×8 and they rebuilt the nodes with 1.6Ghz procs instead of the 2.24 that was agreed to and would not resolve it. Then Brandon had to get in bed with Softlayer to provide services because 8×8 ran out of IP’s and would not give anymore.

But you never heard excuses from him did you? You all kept on talking mad shit about him and the service when at the same time 99% of most only WISH they could hang with his ability. You can quote me on that one.

        • Spirit:

As a observer merely I would say that people started to talk shit about him when their service was down per days without his or your response. You wouldn’t believe but people feel scammed when they pay some service which isn’t delivered and no one respond.. Yeah, really amazing, isn’t it?

          October 29, 2011 @ 12:14 am | Reply
        • I personally didn’t talk shit about him and my arguments over the 32GB nodes is still valid to this day because those sticks *still* aren’t on the market.

He really didn’t ‘eat’ it, it’s obvious if you read any of his original threads on here for enetcloud. Brandon has a temper but has worked to deal with it, but in the original days it was quite entertaining to see him get trolled by some of the users around here.

No ones really questioning any technical abilities he may have, what’s being questioned is his ability to do basic math.

Otherwise I agree there is no way he could get the 8Gb sticks, although the chip does support 32Gb. Looking at the chip config closer it would seem a bit odd to use them as they are only supported as single chips, only giving you four cores per server…. Very odd!

          1) The offer for the 2GB VPS in San Jose has been delivered on. Aside from Kernel issues it has been quite well.

          2) The bickering and outcry is from a seperate service (VMware). Nothing to do with this offer in any way no and in the future. I will add that there were 7 customers from this offer who were in the 8×8 DC affected.

As a whole, you are correct. Not very good. This offer though is a total seperate animal of its own.

My comment was meant to encompass all of ENS not just the 2GB offer. When you look at the big picture the current situation is of your own doing. I shouldn’t have to say it doesn’t look good for ENS. The negativity, the outrage, legitimate complaints and general lack of respect for your customers during the past 1-2 weeks is damaging. To think otherwise is fools gold.

Whether any of the recent events are due to the 2GB offer or not is irrelevant to your business at this point in time. My hope is that any/all providers learn a valuable lesson from this situation…we, your customers, are intelligent enough to know $7 for 2GB is awesome but is not sustainable, either performance will degrade or the provider will…lets just say, have issues.

I am not mocking your business and I am not a customer of yours. But as a LEB reader and vps customer many times over I have been watching.

In 5 days it’ll have been a month since this offer was posted… Anyone know what date his nodes renew on? I’m starting to worry he’ll run away and disappear as soon as it has been a month…

Oh well, at least I have nothing important on my VPS, maybe it’ll stay up, maybe not.

I am assuming that if you are on Openvz plan with Enetsouth, you should be oked.
Because we just saw Brandon tried to raise some money or started venturing into the manage openvz VPS market with today offer on WHT.

It might not be good. Because ditched VMware san Jose users might post in to his offered thread.

    28 days later… And no change…

Low priority ticket submitted on 10/16/11 for incorrect specs and no response… Although I don’t care so much about that one.

12 more days until renewal comes up, we’ll see if they’re still around by then. This company looked and still looks promising, but it really needs to step up on support if they truly are going to stick around.

At the very least, respond to the LEB posts… From the way it’s going right now, it looks like eNetSouth is going to do a runner, which won’t end well.

I don’t think it is possible for the server to be back again. This offer was introduced on Oct 6th, exactly one month since then. It’s obvious that nobody is paying next month’s bill from SL, so that SL just cut off network, or even has deleted all data already.

The available space problem was a warning sign. If you hasn’t backed up, it’s gone.

I’m getting stupendous (1gbps at least for short bursts) speeds from the AlienVPS 192MB Xen plan on their NY6 node at $24/year. They have bigger plans at higher cost of course. Their LV network is slower though still pretty good. Note that they have had server and network stability issues in the past (thus the “fail sale”) but I’ve had pretty good luck so far.

There are lots of companies which manage to provide outstanding service, performance and availability at the same price point as eNS. Many of those are listed here at LEB. The fact that you happened to run into a scammer doesn’t mean that the only way to avoid this in the future is to pay $20 a month for a VPS.

  316. Has anybody got information about reimbursement of long-term fees for VPS?

I paid $38 for 6 months for my KVM VPS in Birmingham. It seems that eNetSouth is down.

My VPS should work from 04-september-2011 to 03-march-2012.
    It should work 6 x 30 = 180 days.

It was working about 10 weeks (rounding up).
    10 weeks x 7 days = 70 days.

    It should work for next 180 – 70 = 110 days.
    110 / 180 = 0.611111111

So I don’t get 61% of my service which is worth:
    0.61 x $38 = $23.18

    Whether it be refunded?

    November 10, 2011 @ 3:49 pm | Reply
    • danielfeng:

I doubt. It’s been more than 45 days since 09/04/2011, so you may not dispute or claim via PayPal (assumed you paid by PayPal). Or you can try credit card charge back (usually 60 days but depending on your card).

Wait for THEM to issue refund? Wow.

He says he got hit with some serious fraud back in July/August and wasn’t able to process credit card payments since early Sept. After that people stated reversing Paypal transactions and that account got locked in October. So hes got major bills and no money and thats all there is to it.

I asked if it was possible to get Softlayer back up even briefly to retrieve data and it sounds like that will only be possible if the datacenter is feeling generous… he doesn’t have the resources.

Brandon is a real chump for not having the balls to come here and post an explanation. I had a VMware VPS with him earlier in the year and could tell even back then that the service was just not run all that well.

      Good riddance.

Didn’t this guy previously learn his lesson about accepting fraudulent orders, I find this excuse he gave you rather amusing.

I think its perfect that this guy hit the dead pool. I found the guy to be rude, arrogant and dishonest. He let my tickets sit in his ticket system unanswered for weeks until I submitted one asking for a refund. He managed to get to that ticket almost instantly and shut down my vps and said he would give me the money back.
I lost the VPS and my money.

My site on their server has disappeared and they did disappear themselves. I don’t know how legally you can do that.
This company does not exist any more. Everything on my server since my last local backup is gone… completely out of the blue. No warning what so ever. I have been running websites for a decade. First time I am seeing such a thing.

This is crazy. This guy was a real smartass to everyone on webhostingtalk, if you said one thing bad about him, or his company he jumped at you like you were hitler rising from the dead ready to kill.

I’m actually happy that this guy has failed, and I hope people screw his life up very bad with all the incoming he has planned for him. The funny thing is, I actually spoke with him about a week ago while he was hiding and when I asked about the fraud charge he told me it was simply $100.00 USD was the biggest fraud charge he has had sense May of this year, so I hope that’s not the one that caused him to lose everything as if so, there’s something wrong with this kid.

We had a few fruad orders placed to our company and services over this past year, but never been stupid enough to process the orders or fraud orders, I believe in the past year so far only 2 fraud orders have ever been processed and then removed/terminated within 48 hours.

I believe he’s just running because he knows he has lied and cannot cover his tracks and make up more lies to cover his past ones to keep clients paying him, so he’s running because he’s out of options to steal and rob money for you guy’s the clients. He’s nothing but a scam artist. I feel sorry for all you guy’s that stuck by him thinking his services were great and good when, the moment he signed with Softlayer according to a few people I’ve talked to, he hasn’t paid a single bill sense the day he signed and purchased equipment with them.

Softlayer is actually pretty cool too, aslong as you work with them and at least make a effort to work with them and their billing team and account managers they will work with you, and help you as much as they can. We had some troubles billing wise in the June of 2010 with them, and they worked with us for over 5+ months and never de-activated our servers or did anything to us, yes we had some catching up to do but we kept in contact, made partial payments and kept going with our business and it was a learning point for us to not jump into high before we know if we can touch bottom incase something happens during the jump in. Softlayer has been excellent to us for the past 4 years now!

I just helped a friend gather contact information for legal methods against Brandon and so on, as he had a few services with them and was only refunded one payment, out of $300 owed to the friend of mine. We were able to obtain full information about him, and legal documents. Crazy thing’s you can find out on the internet about people. I’ll be seeing you soon Brandon, Hope you member me, and the shit you talked on webhostingtalk about us, Pay back and Karma is a very bad bitch. :-)

    Take care,
I hope you sleep well when your trying to go Holiday shopping with money you scammed from your clients that trusted you with there businesses, projects, and websites, your a real dickhead, and Brian, don’t think your someone better, your just as much as of a peice of shit as he is, as you backed up, and did all this with him, and you most likely got a pay check for scamming these people too, You low life shit heads.

But, A promise to you Brandon.. I’ll be seeing you VERY VERY soon, :)
