LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

HostVillage - $2.49 64MB OpenVZ VPS

HostVillage Steven the “CJO” of HostVillage has sent me an email about their “LowEndBox Special”. For $2.49/month you can have this tiny VPS here:

  • 64MB guaranteed/128MB burstable memory
  • 1GB storage
  • 50GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers are located in Dallas TX. The special order link here which is not available on their website. Moreover, if you use the promo code LEBREVIEW you’ll get the 1st month for 1 cent, which is better than their WHT promotion :) Well apparently that 1c special is for me to review the VPS. Sorry don’t really have time for this, but you can still use LOWENDBOX as promo code to get 50% off 1st month. While the domain has been around for 10 years, the website’s copyright notice said 2008-2010. Moreover doing a search on WHT there has never been a previous offer other than the one a few days ago. Therefore I’ll call it a “new provider”.

I ordered a 64 MB VPS last night. I paid by PayPal and it appeared to be setup almost instantly. My first month was only $1.24 with the 50% off coupon code. Future months are supposed to be $2.49. Here’s the info shown on the control panel:

    Operating System: CentOS 5 32bit
    Location: Dallas, TX, USA
    Status: Online
    Memory: 64 MB
    Burst: 128 MB
    Disk Space: 1 GB
    Bandwidth: 50 GB

    Disk Space: 43%
444.85 MB of 1024 MB used / 579.15 MB free

    Memory: 10%
12.91 MB of 128 MB used / 115.09 MB free

    Bandwidth: 0%
0 KB of 50 GB used / free

I got busy last night and forgot to test it, but this morning I accessed the ip address via Firefox and received the typical “Apache 2 Test Page Powered by CentOS” so I guess the web server is working. I have not tested SSH or anything else yet.

I posted this comment to show everyone what resources come with such a small VPS. I wasn’t sure there would be enough RAM or disk space for the software I want to install (after the OS and Apache use some of it) but it seems there is plenty left over for my minimal needs.

We shall see how good they are as a host. Only time will tell. If they work out for me I’ll stick with them long term and I’ll recommend them to others.

Apparently they do not automatically charge me for monthly service. This is the way I want it. I’ve had too many problems with other hosts charging my credit card or PayPal account automatically even when they are ignoring my trouble tickets. Here’s what it says in their TOS:

“HostVillage.com requires all payments to be paid within
3 days of invoice date before service is suspended. A $25
administrative late fee is charged to unsuspend each service.”

Seems fair enough to me. They go on to say:

“Failure to pay allows HostVillage.com to terminate services
The Subscriber’s service after 7 days has elapsed from the
    invoice date.”

Other than the mistake in grammar this seems reasonable too. Why should they continue to provide service when you’re not paying, right?
