For the past year, an elite group of artists, singers, and musicians has been laboring secretly to produce LowEndBox’s first album, and now it’s dropped! Alternatively, I did the whole thing in a few hours with AI. Actually, uploading the songs to YouTube, writing the descriptions, and placing the album art took 10x more time than actually creating the songs.
I’m using Suno, an AI tool that is essentially “ChatGPT for music”. You feed it a prompt, and 2-3 minutes later it spits out a finished song.
Does it work? Yes. Is it perfect? No. It’s sort of like ChatGPT or other LLMs: occasionally brilliant, frequently surprising, but obviously still AI.
The Wacky Factor
I’ve noticed that when a new AI tool comes out, people want to try all kinds of wacky stuff with it. For example, here are some of my first Midjourney prompts:
- “Robert Crumb pen-and-ink drawing of a Stormtrooper gathering in a 1930s German beer hall”
- “JFK taking a selfie with a group of Compton Crip gangbangers”
- “brutalist dystopian propaganda poster of the supreme chicken”
Likewise, when I first tried ChatGPT, I had it spit out endless goofy limericks, haikus, and scientific papers.
With Suno and other music creation tools, I see people filling up YouTube with funny songs, often made with faux vintage stylings:
- Kung Fu Dick (1976)
- Bitches Love Me (1972)
- Don’t Mess With Momma’s Whoopin’ Hand (1982)
- Cock Blocker (1941)
- Take Me to the End Zone (1960)
- MMA Is Not Super Gay
- Take Me to Pound Town (1969)
“Bitches Love Me” has gotten quite some play, and setting aside the funny lyrics, it’s a very well-realized song with its choir, chords, growling singer, and sweeping chorus.
The technology is not strong enough to say “create a symphony that far exceeds anything Mozart ever wrote” or anything like that. Like all LLMs, it’s just an algorithm reflecting the input.
Suno General Remarks
The overall audio quality sounds like 96kbps on cheap earbuds to me. It’s all compressed towards the center of the spectrum and very fuzzy at the low end (no pun intended).
There is definitely a verse, verse, chorus, verse, bridge, etc. structure. You’re not going to get a Grateful Dead live 20-minute trip, and it struggles on some less common genres. You want a 21st century R&B hit? No problem. You want a traditional zydedo, klezmer, or Klingon opera? Expect something that looks like the audio version of Midjourney drawing hands.
Suno is very fast. Takes only a minute for the song to be streamable, and it’s completely done in 2-3 minutes. They also produce a video version for easy sharing, though I do wish that if you changed the title of the song, this was reflected in the video version instead of
OK, so if we’re going to make funny music with AI…
Shawty Got LowEnd
How will Suno do creating an entire album’s worth of songs with different genres? Definitely mixed, but fun. Let’s take a look.
I should note that all the song titles are mine, with a couple extraordinary exceptions discussed below. By default, Suno gave rather boring titles like “LowEnd Groove” “LowEnd Dance” etc.
“Low End Party Rock Anthem”
Prompt: party rock anthem about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Scrollin’ through the deals yeah I’m feelin’ pumped
Seven bucks a month get your server all jumped
LowEndBox the place where the magic’s real
Virtual servers man we landed a steal
Grade: B
I was thinking more LMFAO but this works as a “100,000 frat boys singing in a stadium” kind of song.
“Low As Hell”
Prompt: heavy metal power ballad about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Screaming servers
Low as hell
$7 madness
Deals to sell
Virtual chaos
Unleashed fire
LowEndBox
Our desire
Grade: C-
I would in no way describe this song as a “ballad”, much less a power ballad. It’s more high speed metal. The lyrics are typical of the genre but a lot of them are off-topic. I do appreciate the guitar and keyboard solos, as well as the vocal drop-down after the solos.
“Serverz on da Low (feat. DJ raindog308)”
Prompt: west coast 1990s gangster hip hop about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Rollin’ down the street
Lookin’ for a deal
LowEndBox my spot
Where the prices realServers on the low
Seven bucks or less
Deals come and go
But this site’s the best
Grade: C
Definitely has that West Coast Dr Dre/Snoop Dogg vibe, but I kept expecting a voice to pop out and rap for a bit, but instead it was verse/chorus/bridge. I also tried substituting “rap” or “hip hop” but it was the same. I don’t think Suno can do extended raps.
“Every Click Feels Like a Kiss”
Prompt: smooth R&B song, female singer, passionate romantic song about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Every click feels like a kiss
Finding specials I can’t resist
Your low prices they bring me peace
In the cloud my worries cease
Grade: A
It’s pretty cool when AI astonishes you with something you would never have considered. Merging R&B sensibilities into LowEnd commerce and getting a line like “every click feels like a kiss” is so awesome!
“Cheap Servers Keep Us Strong”
Prompt:up tempo kpop about website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Oh oh oh
Deals to steal
Oh oh oh
Savings real
Search and find those awesome buys
LowEndBox makes us fly
Grade: B
Admittedly, I’m not a big kpop listener, but this sounds like it’s in the ballpark. Lyrics are a little weak but you don’t listen to kpop expecting Steely Dan complexity. “Community tight…
“We Built These LowEndBoxes”
Prompt: 1980s pop song about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
LowEndBox oh take me there
Virtual magic in the air
LowEndBox with deals so bright
Under seven feels so right
Grade: A
This sounds exactly like a synthy 80s pop hit. Perfect.
“What Does Involucration Mean?”
Prompt: 1970s psychadelic album oriented rock song titled “What Does Involucration Mean” about a hosting provider losing a large disk array
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Cosmic server crash data void and spiraling
Tech gods laugh the void absorbs the helpless pleading
Files lost in the infinite swirl all-consuming
Involucration drowning dreams decreeingWhat does involucration mean
Our lives plugged in a digital dream
Signals lost in a neon scream
What does involucration mean
Grade: A
Not sure this is really the sound of Rush or Jethro Tull or Pink Floyd. This may be my fault. Early on, I submitted a prompt that included the common noun “ronin” (a Japanese samurai without a master) and it wouldn’t let me use “ronin” because that is the name of an artist, so I assumed artist names are off-limits. But I just tried “A song from Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ about…” and it worked. Shrug.
On this one, I gave Suno the title, since it was unlikely to figure out what involucration means.
The music may be a little off but the lyrics and song are so awesome, who cares!
“Summer Ghost”
Prompt: a song called “summer host” about cheap low-end hosting providers who run big specials in June but are out of business by August
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Summer deals they look so bright
Catch a bargain cheap delight
June comes they’re full of hype
By August gone with just a sighWebsites crashing endless nights
Promises of speed and might
Cheap and cheerful oh so brief
A ghostly host that’s brought us griefSummer ghost you came and went
Sunny deals but money spent
Your promise lingered like the breeze
But vanished fast just like the seas
Grade: A+
OK, so where we have a “Hal from 2001” moment. I told it what title to use…and it ignored me! However, the song title it came up with is so awesome I don’t care. In the entire history of our community, no one has ever referred to a summer host as a summer ghost, and I think that’s amazing.
“Virtual Servers Dime a Dozen (Straight Bustas)”
Prompt: west coast 1990s gangster rap about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
LowEndBox, we talkin’ deals for digital hustlers
Virtual servers dime a dozen, straight busters
$7 or less, server flex on every budget
Gettin’ bandwidth and disk space, ain’t gotta cut itQuick click, instant deploy, no fuss
IP in the bag, makin’ moves like a veteran, trust
Cheap deals for the homies, keep the game alive
Uptime gold, server glow, we thrive, we strive
Grade: D+
How does this even remotely sound like West Coast hip hop? It sounds more like the Beastie Boys. Hard fail on the genre, but I do like the song and plan to drive slowly down main street with my windows down, blasting it from my…um, Subaru.
“Seven Bucks Take Flight”
Prompt: up tempo electric Latina singing group, excited about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Seven bucks take flight
Scream and shout we’re feeling right
Virtual dreams at such a price
Paradise comes we don’t think twiceWe love LowEndBox
Deals make us dance
Magic everywhere
Specials a trance
Grade: D+
Not even in the same universe as the prompt. A single male singer is not a “Latina singing group”. I must admit, I laughed out loud at “Deals make us dance” in the chorus. Nice song, but Suno was confused.
“Low End Boogie aka Dancing to the Deals (1947)”
Prompt: 1940s big band orchestra, about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
LowEndBox is rocking
Deals are always knocking
Servers under seven
Feels like hosting heaven
Grade: A
Nailed it. Perfect orchestra with a nice solo (and brief, appropriate for the 78rpm format), and the vocabulary and slang are very period-appropriate. Dancing to the deals!
“Deals Stack Like Poker Chips High (1969)”
Prompt: 1960s Rat Pack jazz crooner singing about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Scroll the aisles, take your time, with a bourbon or lime,
Deals stack like poker chips high,
For seven bucks or a bit, you’ll be saving a bit,
LowEndBox will make you fly.
Grade: B
This to me is more Michael Bublé than Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin. You can hear a little bit of the input and prompt creeping in: reference to “when the moon hits your eye” (like a big pizza pie? A Dean Martin song) and the reference to Sinatra in the lyrics. Nicely done.
“Argh! The Low End Shanty”
Prompt: pirate singing shanty about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
LowEndBox oh LowEndBox
Servers cheap they rock our socks
LowEndBox oh LowEndBox
Deals so rare they boost our stocksPirates know where to look
For deals they find in every nook
Sailing ships on the data sea
LowEndBox the place to be
Grade: A+
Perfect! The moment it played I felt like I was at the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney. Funny lyrics and hits the genre spot on.
“Heavenly Deals”
Prompt:Mormon Tabernacle Choir, a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Harmonize with special plans
Feel the savings in your hands
Seven bucks for digital lands
Sing with joy through all the landsChoir of savings we intone
Specials carved in digital stone
No more searching all alone
Find your server find your home
Grade: C
This is not a choir, much less a Mormon one singing in a tabernacle. I think Suno took this as a generic Christian music request. On that score, it does pretty well – many common musical tropes and lyrical phrases from Christian pop are used, and the song comes out very well.
“Hosting Plans That Feel So Right”
Prompt: male motown singing group, song about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Virtual servers day and night
Hosting plans that feel so right
Budget-friendly take a bite
LowEnd magic outta sight[Chorus]
LowEndBox we got the feel
Seven dollars such a steal
Deals and specials all for real
Catch the fever it’s a deal
Grade: B
Giving high marks for the smooth music, but this isn’t Motown. Motown is the Temptations. If I’m generous, this could be 70s Spinners, but it’s a little too slick and synthy. But smooooth…
“Low End Fever in My Bones”
Prompt: up tempo memphis soul, slow burn, growling male singer, about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Specials flashing those banners bright
Pick a box that feels just right
High-end tech for a low-end fee
Yeah LowEndBox is calling meLowEnd fever in my bones
Deals and bargains like I’ve never known
LowEnd fever keeps me sane
Seven dollar servers in my brain
Grade: C
What I was going for was something more like “Ain’t Got a Nickel, Ain’t Got a Dime“, an AI song that is described as “Up tempo Memphis soul 1970’s”. Maybe that 1970s is more significant as a prompt than I thought. This sounds more like Everclear.
“LowEndBox You Got Me (Forever We Will Be)”
Prompt: boy band, romantically singing about their passion for a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Seven bucks or less
Hard to believe
Deals and specials
You won’t ever leavePassion in the price
Yeah that’s the key
LowEndBox delight
Forever we will be
Grade: A-
Yup, boy band. Would have liked more voices, as this could just be a solo artist. Passion in the price!
“Seven is All You Need (Star Traveller Mix)”
Prompt: 1970s Swedish disco song about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
$7 is all you need
LowEndBox’s gotta lead
Deals and specials shining bright
Hosting dreams take flight tonightLowEnd groove let’s make a move
Disco servers in the groove
Specials flashing lights unwind
In the virtual where we bindEconomy with dazzling lights
Virtual journeys endless nights
Curated deals server spark
In the forums leave your mark
Grade: B
This sounds more like 90s Eurotrash to me than Abba. But it’s very nicely realized, with very genre-appropriate lyric stylings (“let’s make a love”, “take flight tonight”, etc.). In the forums leave your mark!
“Sharing Magic in Buffalo”
Prompt: 1960s folk hippie song titled “Sharing Magic in Buffalo” about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
With seven and change
You get more than bread
Virtual realms where spirits are fed
Uncover treasures in a techie spread
Communes of code
Where wanderers treadSharing magic in Buffalo
Where the bits and bytes aglow
Find your place in the digital show
At LowEndBox
Deals start low
Grade: B
I was going for something like Scott Makenzie’s “If You’re Going to San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)“. This is not quite period-sound, which is disappointing since I did say 1960s. It’s weird – when I asked for “1960s British Invasion” (ala the Beatles) I got something truly awful, but then it nails big band (above). Still, the lyrics…LOL
“Saving Dollars Every Moon (from Gilbert & Sullivan’s HMS Seven Dollars)”
Prompt: Gilbert and Sullivan aria about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Hosting dreams come true it seems
On a budget built for teams
LowEndBox forever gold
Watch the bargains all unfold
Grade: F
This would be a case where a couple smart guys from the 1800s make better lyrics than the sharpest AI in the 21st century. Most people know G&S for songs such as “I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General“. I think the rapid-fire pace, broad topics, cultural references, etc. are just too much for Suno.
“LowEndBox, a Wondrous Space” (Verdi’s Il LowEndBox, Act II)
Prompt: 19th century italian opera aria about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
Deals and specials fill your halls
Echo through these ancient walls
For seven gems a worthy find
Binds us all in server kind[Chorus]
LowEndBox a wondrous space
Bringing joy with every face
For even pennies servers gleam
Fulfilling every dream
Grade: F
Actually, Italian opera is sung in…Italian. But even setting that aside, this sounds more like Phantom of the Opera or Cats than 19th century opera. You can tell Suno tried.
“$7 is All You Need (We Built These LowEndBoxes Alt Take)”
Prompt: 1980s pop song about a website called LowEndBox where you can get virtual servers for $7 or cheaper, many deals and specials
Lyrics: Link
Lyric Highlight:
LowEndBox oh take me there
Virtual magic in the air
LowEndBox with deals so bright
Under seven feels so right
Grade: B
Same generation as “We Built These LowEndBoxes” above, but this one definitely does not sound 80s. However, it does sounds like a good 90s dance song.
