I went for the cheapest option, the OpenVZ/SolusVM in Dallas for 13$. After I made the payment, they immediately suspended the service and demanded that I provide a photograph of a government issued ID and of my credit card to “ensure the safety and reliability of our service for legitimate users.”

This is really absurd. I do not recommend these guys.

    • Nathanael:

With the amount of fraud nowadays I don’t see it absurd at all, we do verification with credit card payments to protect our business, and it is clearly described on the terms you agreed to when signing up.

Shame you didn’t get to try our service and wish you the best with the next host you pick.

    • Matt Zelasko:

This is pretty common. When a company accepts a credit card for payment they have to ensure it’s being used by the owner of the card. If they don’t, they end up providing a service for free for a period of time and paying the chargeback. Essentially paying to supply someone with a service for a few days. Now that’s what I call absurd.

Think about it, any store you go into can ask for a photo ID when you use a credit card, and most do for larger purchases. Would you get upset if a cashier asked for ID?

      It’s inconvenient, but it’s necessary.

        Although i understand your reasoning… In a store, I’d be upset…

“While it’s perfectly okay for a merchant to ask for your ID, you can refuse to provide it and they have no right to refuse the use of your credit card for the purchase of your merchandise.”

        • Matt Zelasko:

Right, but they also aren’t required to sell you anything if they suspect fraud.

They sent me an email saying that they were going to refund the purchase. Which never happened. There is a charge on my bank account for 13$. Doesn’t this mean that their payment service provider did validate that the credit card was valid? Otherwise how could they have performed the transaction?

When I got that email I was still logged in on their website but when I refreshed the page it seemed to have logged me out. I tried to log in again but it didn’t work anymore. Makes you think.

I let a couple of days pass but to this day I have not gotten my money back. And I am giving up. It sucks losing 13$ but it just isn’t worth all the effort that could be required to get them back.

This was a bad experience. On the bright side, though, I do love this website for the wide variety of offers from different backgrounds, it wasn’t hard to find a better and even cheaper host that doesn’t shoot first and ask questions later. Although I cannot recommend Owned-Networks, Low End Box remains awesome.

Daniel: I can confirm that your refund was processed, so it should get there soon. We’re certainly not in the business of keeping anybody’s money :\. If you need additional information on this matter, feel free to contact us via our live chat. Our intention is to keep cc fraud away, verification happens when something looks off on the order, if nothing is triggered then most of the times there isn’t any verification required, not sure what your case was but we I wish you good luck!

If a company requires me to provide potential identity theft information please just ask for it on the initial application then I know that I will not be wasting my time dealing with them. It is not something I provide.

At least you provide real IPv6 (/64) – Thanks for that

  10. Just picked up two of the 512MB OVZ servers (Miami and Dallas). Both look great so far, and I the tickets I opened for minor issues were taken care of right away. Kudos!

Using the TOS as an excuse is not customer friendly, you should state that you could require further proof of identity clearly when the customer choose the payment method that could be subject to these extra verifications. In the EU is mandatory by EU wide Consumer Proteccion Law, so if EU regulators thought it was only fair if properly advertised as a bare minimum, any company that is consumer oriented should do better that what ever the regulatory bodies think is the bare minimum. No excuses. Change It and be Consumer Friendly.

I tried to buy a VPS from Owned a couple years ago from another site (hackforums).
I was charged on paypal and then never had the box set up.
I sent tons of support emails with no reply.
Had to go through Paypal which took weeks for a refund.

Hope you guys have changed support and management since then…..
