RethinkVPS - $5.95 128MB OpenVZ VPS

RethinkVPS Jon from RethinkVPS pointed me to this current WHT offer, where you can choose between either double memory or double disk. Their “VPS1.0” package is $5.95/month (which is significantly more expensive than their launch offer). Order link here.

  • 128MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
(2x memory with promo code GIVEMETHERAM)
  • 15GB storage
(2x disk space with promo code GIVEMETHEHDD)
  • Unmetered bandwidth on 100Mbps link (sorry, not Gbps)
  • 2 IP addresses
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

I believe they have their VPS in Scranton PA with BurstNet. Their website however has moved to Awknet since early December. For its DDoS protection I guess? The 1Gbps unmetered feature is indeed interesting, and I wonder what kind of crowd would this offer attract? Domain has been registered since October 2010 with consecutive NS. Updated: RethinkVPS has confirmed that their VPS products are also hosted in Los Angeles (Awknet as well?)

That will surely draw the file hosting/file sharing crowd. I wonder what speeds will actually be possible on this supposed 1 Gbps link. Anyone care to test?

I find that if you happens to be sharing a server with someone doing torrent seeding, the I/O would be so bad that the only thing you could use that VPS for, is a seedbox.

I doubt bandwidth would be a problem. Given the 15GB storage it is probably something in the range of 4x to 8x HDD RAID10 which if given torrent access pattern, can’t go very far, which I guess no more than 250mbps when harddrive I/O fully saturated.

They host on DDOS protected hosting, because they are getting ddos for more then 1Gbps? Yeah right.
Try to use 5TB of BW and report back when they suspend you for bw overuse on Burst’s METERED 1Gbps server :D

They do not have 1Gbps port speed. I talked to them and they have 100mbs

  9. Tom, last time I checked DDOS doesn’t have to be about saturating the bandwidth it can quiet easily exhaust the services running on the servers targeted such as eating up all available listening process’s on Apache for instance

  10. Just to clarify the post is incorrect. We are on a 100mpbs Unmetered port. And @Tom we are truly unmetered. You would never be suspended for using bandwidth.

Torrents are not allowed on our services unless it is 100% legal content which we find us normally NOT the case.

    • So if i setup a Ubuntu mirror on a vps you would not have a problem with the bandwidth usage? Or a speedtest server.

  11. Ryan, why then does the WHY thread also mention that it’s unmetered on a 1GB port?

    • Awknet has their own rolled DDOS filtering. If it’s LA w/ cisco guard it’ll be burstnet.

  15. I apologize about the confusion, I have requested WHT admins to change the advertisement to 100MB/s connection port. So with this being said, please let me take the time to correct the confusion:

-All VPS’s on this current node use 100mb/s.

-We are not hosted with BurstNET (and never will be again), nor are we hosted with Awknet. Instead we are protected by a provider based in LA, and they were able to sustain the massive attacks. Within a few days of moving, the attacks seized, and gave up. We are still with them for the main reason of preventing the same problem from happening twice.

-Myself and the management team is discussing the possibility of deploying another node somewhere in UK/Germany. More information will be provided when made available.

-We have clients that have consumed large amounts of bandwidth, higher than a TB, with no effects on the server. As long as the traffic is legal (which it is in this case), your account WILL NEVER BE SUSPENDED DUE TO BANDWIDTH. However, if found you are using a Seedbox, or using for Torrents or illegal use, we then will take appropriate measures.

If you have anymore questions, feel free to post here, and I will be actively monitoring this thread.

    Warmest Regards,

    Jon Beard

We block port 25 due to VPS’s spamming, there are many different ways to do this. We do offer a refund just a 7 day money back refund and you had passed the 7 day limit.
