Too bad though that Rock My Web pulled their on-demand VPS service. Their web site (rockmyweb.net) now says “coming soon” and refers to a web media company. AFAICT, there is no way to sign up new VPS’s under the old on-demand system that was mentioned in your previous post. (Their instant-VPS domain, “virtualcomplete.com”, now has an invalid security cert. I didn’t bother adding an exception to see if I could get to it… The fact that the cert is dead, was enough to send me away.)

Anyway — the previous great offer from this company lasted less than 5 months, as best I can tell. How long will this one be around?

Update: the NEW site VirtuallyDedicated also has SSL cert issues. Click on “Manage” at the upper right. The default Firefox configuration will choke on the cert as being from an “untrusted issuer.” Read on, and you see that the cert is self-signed.

Now I certainly use self-signed certs for testing, but I don’t think too many end users are going to trust you with sensitive personal and financial information unless you have a valid cert from a recognized CA. Since you can get entry-level certs for under $20/year now, cost really isn’t a factor.

  3. Hello Wolf,

The manage is a link to our control panel. We do only use a self-signed certificate for the control panel, but it still offers 256-bit encryption through openssl, the same security as any SSL.

All “financial” information is kept on our billing system which does have a CA certificate, https://billing.virtuallydedicated.com. We do not actually accept credit cards though, we let PayPal and Google handle our credit card authentication therefore no actual financial information is kept on any of our systems.

    Thank you.

Can you confirm this is available (some sort of control panel)

    Thanks,

  5. Hello Brendan,

Thanks for your interest. Yes, we offer VSX Pathway as a control panel which gives you instant OS reloads. We have lots of operating systems to choose from and if you see one that you would like that isn’t available we are usually very quick in getting it added for you.

    Thanks,

  7. If you had read the thread, we did refund the customer on Monday. I’m not sure where the bad practices come in, this person posted about us not refunding less than a day after requesting a refund. The refund was requested on Friday and this thread was started on Saturday because we apparently did not provide an instant refund. I don’t know anyone who processes refunds immediately except for retail stores.

    Thank you.

I see that someone from your company started a topic one day earlier seeking a way to justify NOT refunding the customer.
It looks to me like you were trying to turn the customers payment for hosting into a non-refundable setup fee.

The customer opened a topic one day later, saying after first consulting the WHT Helpdesk for advice on how to proceed, and pointed out some things that hint at a bad provisioning, and also one major omission in your TOS. Exactly that omission you were using in your own topic, in the opening line, to invalidate the refund request.

The 9GB bandwidth that was already used up right after account provisioning, would already be reason for me to not take any risks.

I also noticed that ServInt added a 30 day money back guarantee to their offer a couple of days later.
Dont know if it was, related, just coincidence, or deliberate.

  9. Hello,

Something makes me feel like this is the same person that opened the WHT thread. We have refunded, so please leave it at that. The thread opened by our company was just to ask the communities’ advice not to justify anything. We have a large customer base from WHT.

As we had told the customer, the 9GB used was a flaw in the control panel and he would not be charged overages until it was fixed. He did manage to not discuss that email in his thread but rest assured we were not planning on taking advantage of something as little as 9GB of bandwidth.

    Thank you.

    Hi Marvin,

But I read in that thread of your colleague “Do you think it is wrong of us to not honor this refund request?”
Is this trying to justify not to refund or not?

In the opening post I see that the customer copy pasted your reply to the 9GB used flaw. (All your replies are in red.)
So what you are saying that he managed to not discuss that email is not true, Marvin.

And Marvin, that 9GB is close to the 10GB mentioned in the quote from your TOS below :
    “6.Refunds

Refunds are based on the current service level agreement of RockMyWeb, DBA and subsidiaries or by negotiation with RockMyWeb’s customer service department. The list of “Guarantees” are on the current web site of RockMyWeb, DBA accessible at http://www.rockmyweb.net or on our subsidiaries web site. All refunds must be made through our customer service department. If you are applying for our 7-day money back guarantee and bandwidth exceeds 10GB, you are liable for bandwidth charges at $0.10/GB. You will not be charged more than your monthly bill unless you transferred more than your allowed bandwidth in the month.”
