VMStormVPS - $5.97 256MB VMWare VPS in State College PA

VMStormVPS Cloud. Storm. Stormy cloud — is that a good thing? Hmm. Anyway. VMStormVPS (with a dark stormy cloud as logo as a tornado as mascot) was launched last month, and David their CIO, notified me via email that they have some budget VPS plans. “F1 Cloud VPS” is $5.97/month, and comes with

  • 256MB memory
  • 10GB storage on RAID10
  • 300GB/month data transfer
  • VMWare

Servers in State College, PA in their own leased space and I presume their own servers. Read more about their data center here. VMStorm is the budget VPS brand of Flashpoint Informatics that was only launched in July, according to this tweet from the CEO. Flashpoint itself has been around since 2009.

    what university/college offers colo :o

    August 19, 2011 @ 2:38 pm | Reply
    • State College is apparently a college town which I think is more than just a university (I have to google that to find out). Therefore the co-lo space might not be related to the college at all.

Correct, State College is the name of the city. Although Penn State’s located here, it’s still actually a city

  2. Hi ab — thanks for the note. To be clear, there is no college/university association. The town we’re located in is called State College because it’s the home of Penn State University. Most folks know of Penn State more than State College so we occasionally reference that for clarity :). Our space is in a private industrial park and unrelated to any university.

Also wanted to note that we DO own all of the server equipment, network equipment, etc. Level3 is our primary bandwidth provider though we’re multi-homed with others including Windstream communications. All providers are on diverse fiber paths.

can you support custom iso system?
or do you offer win system?

    • We could also support custom iso images. There are particular requirements regarding hard drive setup in order to allow for easy expansion. Drop me a message if you’re interested!

    • We’re in the process of rolling IPv6 out on our network as we speak. Realistically it’s probably 1-3 months away from production use.

I don’t see any prohibition of IRC in the AUP. I’m taking that to mean it is ok.

    September 27, 2011 @ 4:00 am | Reply
    • I don’t see anything either. It’s interesting that it’s their AUP but what they list as not acceptable is three quarters down their AUP page:

      https://www.vmstormvps.com/acceptable-use-policy

And they really need to clean up that page. They didn’t copy and paste it too well from where ever they got it from. Lots of artifacts.

      • Hi All,

        Thanks for the feedback.

@ChinnoDog we don’t allow illegal use, based on the laws that govern our corporation and our datacenter location. If the use is legal and it’s not interfering with the use of other clients (it probably won’t), it’s OK.

@drmike unfortunately lawyers haven’t learned to code HTML yet ;). We’ll clean up some of the nasty bits.

        Best,
        Dave

        • ChinnoDog:

I think it goes without saying that illegal activities are prohibited. I am only interested in restricted legal uses. I see you do ban BitTorrent, which is perfectly legal.

          September 27, 2011 @ 2:29 pm | Reply
        • True, there are legal uses for bit torrent. We disallow some technologies to ensure the availability of the infrastructure. Some technologies (like torrent) create lots and lots of connections which can preclude fair use for other clients.

The bottom line for this AUP and all other AUPs is: if you’re not causing issues, you’re going to fly under the radar. We’re not actively looking for clients to shut down :).

          Best,
          dave
