Mohamed from CityNet Host notified me that their $2.50/month OpenVZ VPS offer (last posted in August) is now back!
- 512MB memory
- 50GB storage
- 1000GB/month data transfer
- OpenVZ/SolusVM
Servers in their own facility in Egypt. The package also comes with central backup enabled, and 30 days money back. Use this sign up link to order. Previous CityNet Host offers all seem to generate a lot of comments so I guess many would be able to chip in their experience with this provider.

I’m using it since their last promo and I’m happy with it.
If you need some other benchmark let me know.
They do not provide IPv6 yet.
@LEA is it allowed to post referral link here? I’ve started participating in their affiliate programm.
If LEA don’t mind I could post it here.
Well well well.
Do I mind? No. I don’t do referral links so I loose nothing.
Do I mind? Hmm maybe. Because even I who posted all these offers don’t put referral/affiliate links on them.
Do I mind? Hell YES! The last thing I want by allowing referral links is entire site flooded by aff links once the gate is opened.
@dannix: you are free to put everything on this comment form. and Admin is also free to delete your comment when he/she doesn’t want it.
but i suggest you not to post affiliate links. let this blog become “clean” VPS blog.
I don’t want to put here something for LEA to delete it. Thats why I asked for it. I’am reading here since some time already but I didn’t see information about it.
Awesome, I’d take one for sure.
How long will this offer stand? My CC has been stolen so I can’t buy it today. Probably got a new one by monday.
I’ve one from the previous promo, uptime is now 29 days.
Mine’s $2.17 a month, payable 6 monthly, this offer may have similar choices.
Can i use it for.. ehmm.. seedbox? I know it will not so fast, but..
Check the TOS, illegal content is not allowed. If you only seed legal stuff, I suppose it is okay.
BTW also IRC is not allowed in any shape or form, which is kinda unfortunate.
Well, that is too bad. Anyway the speed test is not that impressive:

Darn.. Can i pay with paypal one time checkout? not subscription!
Well since directspace.net lied 3 or 4 times about releasing another batch of there 2$/m VPS line, I guess I’ll order this for my test box.
They are better than directspace. My 2$ VPS with them is almost unusable because it’s really slow.
Oh, really ?
I have $2 VPS from directspace.
Although not so fast, i can use the VPS for testing & some development, even running openfire (java).
But mysql have problem.
Off topic, but directspace’s network is quite crap. I have one of their 100TB server. Very difficult to push over 100Mbps unless you use loads of threads.
They do well for this price. I had some short downtimes and the speed is not very fast, but it’s okay and they have good connections to some European countries aswell. I have a vps at citynethost for 2 month.
I only hope new customers from this offer will go to new nodes, not existing ones because those were deemed undersold. :)
Use the new Unixbench, that version shows some inconsistent scores
Some feedback:
Setup took around 30m.
I’m on CityNetNode7 node.
CPU – Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 760 @ 2.80GHz with access to all 4 cores (It’s great, but we all know it’s a potential abuse problem).
Central Backups are enabled by default, 2 slots are available ( more then enough for me ) this option is available on like 1/10 hosts who use solusvm.
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k; sync
16384+0 records in
16384+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 1.38468 seconds, 775 MB/s
Seems to be a fresh node? :O The only one who has a faster disc I/O is Nordic with there Hetzner servers.
Centos seems to have a local repository (or somewhere in Egypt), so a 110mb update took less then a minute.
Downside – Centos 32bit is a crappy template with full of unneeded stuff =(
Some speedtests:
You know I’m a bitch when it comes to transfer speed, so bah no comments =D
Here is a 96MB test file if you want to test it.
http://citynet.kurikami.com/uploads/speedtest.bin
The only thing I will not test is WHT benchmark as it says nothing and pointlessly abuses SHARED resources.
If any other test interests you feel free to ask.
> Seems to be a fresh node? :O The only one who has a faster disc I/O is Nordic with there Hetzner servers.
For the n-th time, people, use
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
not “; sync”, which is executed after your benchmark result is already printed on screen.
Also you may want to use not 16k but something like 1k, since the properly executed test will not be that fast.
ORLY!?!? I will do my future benchs with that flag. thanks for the advice
errr.. wait… wait.. in reload os, i see xen-pv option..
And after this You have xen kernel:
2.6.18-194.17.1.el5xen
But after reinstall OS I have problem with date:
Tue Jan 22 13:18:31 CET 2002
node time fixed.
Ordered one, looks far better than I expected. This is a keeper :)
All of their i.p’s are blacklisted, did you guys know that?
Your email server won’t deliver.
I think it just won’t inbox.. probably goes to junk mail.
My email’s coming in through Citynet ok
Mine was blacklisted, but I went to each of the blacklists listed with red FAIL on http://bgp.he.net/ip/YOUR.IP.ADDRESS.HERE#_rbl, and followed their ‘remove from blacklist’ procedures, now this page is all green and OK for me, and I send mail fine.
Yeah I just checked and saw 2 blacklists
b.barracudacentral.org
noptr.spamrats.com
Spam rats is no problem, it just needs ptr and I’ll drop an email to barracuda.
Just got my blacklisted IPs cleaned, both blacklists where nice enough and removed them under 12 hours after contacting them.
I’m new to openvz vps, so if i asked citynet to enable tun/tap, etc. will i have to ask them again if i reload (re-install) the vps?
Reinstall – most likely no; but on mine TUN/TAP gets ‘lost’ when host node reboots, so I have to ask them each time to reenable it (about six times already). However the last reboot was 35 days ago now, so it could be that during this time they finally solved that problem and it will not disappear anymore.
Hey that happens to me in vpstree and hostrail =(
On my HostRail VPS on Uranus node the TUN does persist properly across reboots.
I am scared, I will try to mantain the machine up xD
BTW, they have decent uptime I think.
The package is really good one , But their support is REALLY terrible ! I submitted a ticket with high priority for more than 5 hours but they didn’t have updated it yet !
Its saturday and pretty late. If they have a life they’re not around.
<<Edited by LowEndAdmin: Trying not to be abusive here little birdie!>>
My bad..
Just got a new one. It’s faster than my other VPS with them.
Are these VPSes capped to 10mbit both inbound n outbound?
No, not at 10 mbit that’s for sure.

My testing is indicating otherwise:

It does say 1.40 MB/s right there, that’s the average speed over whole download, and it is more than 10 mbit.
Then I can only assume that either everyone on node is using the 100mbit port heavily or they have capped it to “something” just above 10mbit. I will be glad if someone from CityNet cares to clarify.
A question, the previous offer has 1024 burstable. This too? It seems not. Someone knows?
Yes it has burstable like all openvz ;)
How long did everyone else’s take to get set-up?
Place order now….
let see how long they set it up (^_^)
Activated!!
fast enough (^_^)V
Ok first impressions…
I payed and… deploy was in 3 minutes… LOL
Node 7
Make sure to secure SSH, seems like getting a new IP is getting bruted in less then 24 hours.
Can i use fail2ban in openvz? should i ask for iptables support first?
Why not? And iptables are there by default so just fail2ban for centos or here’s a tut for debian blockhosts http://www.howtoforge.com/preventing-brute-force-attacks-with-blockhosts-on-debian-lenny
Nice, thanks :)
Or change the default ssh port ;D
How you can do this with dropbear?
Pfff, is funny, I have A LOT attempts to connect ¬¬ Seems someone in Egypt.
Just disable password-based authentication in OpenSSH, problem solved.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH/OpenSSH/Keys
and https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=en&q=openssh+key-based+authentication
updating the OS is like 33kB/s.. anyone else this slow?
Use another mirrors
I use this:
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian lenny main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-security lenny/updates main contrib non-free
Like 200 KB/s
Someone knows how to use netselect? Or how to get properly a list for netselect :P
netselect-apt -n -f lenny
anyway, i’m wondering can i change it to squeeze.. will it break :D
I thought netselect-apt was a replacement for apt-get.
Thanks for the tip
I don’t think it’s the mirror since cachefly is slow as well!!
Second impressions..
The debian i386 without webmin is BROKEN, my VPS can’t boot… I have installed debian with webmin ¬_¬ and works now.
The network is slow n_n
They don’t limit you in CPU, and that may be an inconvenient if some abusers come.
A geekbench score http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/317061
The I/O is impressive…now.
OLD test, as I have seen here
NEW test, as rm says
And the bruteforcers have come. The IP isn’t in Egypt, seems in UK o_O but in the same subnetwork /16 Someone knows 41.223.209.59?
Yepp Lxguard just blocked this IP, lots of failed logins from it.
But that is a software to use with some control panel, I’m right?
Correct, its apart of kloxo.
Robtex showed that the IP belongs to someone in Côte_d’Ivoire (West Africa) with Alink CI Telekom.
Reference – http://www.robtex.com/ip/41.223.209.59.html#whois
Debian i386 minimal, working fine here.
OMG! I didn’t see that image.. pfff ¬_¬ I feel more newbie everyday… Now I don’t know how to read LOL
I will try that image later, because my setup is ready now with debian/webmin (Stopped webmin :D )
Same thing happens to me, what means?
Has anyone filled a ticket for rDNS? They ignoring my ticket for it. :(
rdns changed yesterday in 1 hour, mine’s from the previous offer.
You should aim to business hours m-f 10am-6pm or so egypt time to get fast reply ;)
its getting slow day by day
9% [==> ] 43,639,457 36.1K/s eta 2h 47m
yeah I started noticing the slow down when this promotion started.. I put in a ticket yesterday regarding this issue and today got a reply saying please check network now.. but same thing it’s still slow..
Other than this network issue, the VPS is pretty good.
It seems that download speed to server is really good (can reach 1.3MB/s), but the upload is unstable and varies from 30KB to a 100KB. No idea why that is happening on level3 peering.
Has anyone been stuck on a new node yet? All customers are probably being dumped into the same server :<
Node 7 reporting :D
Node 7 too here…..
I am on CityNetNODE5 for a couple of months (since the previous offer with same specs), they clearly do have more than one node.
Mine’s on CityNetNode11 from the previous offer.
I’m on 13
Everything is great, if you don’t consider the speed of transfers to/from the US. This is slower than broadband to my home :(
19398656 11% 24.43kB/s 1:38:02
Legal adult content not allowed.. :(
Today I have signed with CityNet Host – very quick setup, and for now – good connectivity.
I’m really impressed by your comments guys i’m satisfied..When there’s any sort of delay in replying to your tickets it’s just because if you living in the US for example it’s 14 hours difference..rDNS setup/orders it’s almost instant..We don’t oversell our vpss so speed will always be fair 100Mbps caped 10mbit..Explaination for why re-installing OS is that quick because Centos mirror is hosted on our servers..For peoples who had few problems with their OS most of them using Debian we have changed the image already..@Amir i was replying to your tickets on the spot since we talked on live chat but you was asking for some extra stuff like VNC for ubuntu etc..and you know these servers are unmanaged so whenever i have free time i do my best to help however after i came back on sunday i re-activated your VNC server within minutes from reaching my office..
please reply my ticket khalid
@Joy I just did but unfortunately i am not from billing department..
Tested their technical support, realized that either they don’t work 24/7, or only reply to certain ticket selectively.
According to their Twitter, the offer expired on the 15th, I’ve managed to order one following the above link today. Setup took about 5 hours though.
Might be helpful to someone!
Today, my server was suspended because “SSH atacking” o_O
I hope they will answer my ticket, because the last was ignored.
Your ticket answered, Your VPS opening a huge amount of ssh sessions which appear like bruteforcers other machines on the internet from our Data Center.
Kindly contact us to solve this issue.
they were listed on http://nohostsland.com/africa/egyptian-vps-at-25-512mb-openvz/ with a good review too. I might try them
Ha. That appears to be your own site, Chris?
Can’t seem to find the review…
I must say I’m SUPER impressed for the price.. But how is it so cheap? Also late night the internet over there is FAST I was getting over 500k/sec from UK & US.. It’s blazing! Right now at 9AM EST I’m getting 92k to California, still not that bad at all!
Sadly they ban IRC, but it’s no big deal I have VPS’s all over the place, but this is the one with the highest transfer, 1000GB a month!!!
I must be missing something, it’s simply too good to be true, but I’m glad I prepaid 1 year….!
do you allow to host proxy website??

Great package.
I have two VPS with them. Both working excellent. Here in Serbia, ping is better than from USA servers.
great package? their own site is down.
looks like their website is down, but my VPS is still up…
my VPS is down, so as their website :(
They have some network issue related to MTU, I can ssh to my VPS fine, but an attempt to transfer files stalls;
I issued the command “ifconfig venet0 mtu 1480” and after that everything works fine.
I suspect their site is not loading for people because of the same problem.
Thanks it worked :D
Omg!! That happened to me too :S I will take a note about that tip
Mine is still up (node 7), and i can transfer files just fine.
DDos attack on the main website caused a little bit of slowing performance..
Now is everything OK
Is there a valid offer from them that I can use for a short term? I can only see $2.00 for 12 months minimum.
2.50 for 1 month with the same specs
http://www.citynethost.com/vps104offer.asp
But when I click through to the shopping cart, I cannot order for a term less than 12 month.
Hmmm that’s true…
Well, now I se 6 month period. They changed the old promo.
Be careful with them – they suspended my VPS TWICE for no reason – the first time it was because of “e-mail spam” which was not true – the server actually was sending system status mails to MY OWN e-mail address and absolutely no other e-mail(so, in that case maybe I’m spamming myself ?).
The second time they suspended my VPS because of “TOS violation, Running Proxy Server” – they DID not said that proxy servers are not allowed in their ToS (if they change that now, I have screenshots of their current ToS). Also I talked with them on the live chat BEFORE creating my account and they said that proxies are allowed.
In simple words: if you start using a lot of resources (RAM, bandwidth, disk space…) they will “invent” a reason or “ToS violation” and will suspend your VPS (that’s what happened in my case).
Ok, I don’t want ot, but, here is another customer with troubles…and I will tell you what happened to me.
First, buyed the VPS
Submit a ticket for tun with no answer
Some days after, suspended, reason? SSH “atacking”.
Opening a ticket… long time after was answered. I was “using” a lot of resources. What resources? They say, a lot of ssh sessions… And?? What’s the problem? Ok, I explained some of my cronjobs issues about opening ssh every minute and some days later was enabled again. By thw way, previous ticket closed…no tun.
Coming days, all ok, uptime goes well. One morning, I open my ssh session…htop, 300+ processes running. Well, I was hacked. Processes like “ssh-atack” and ssh-scan.. Everything in the logs is dirty, and I figured when the bot rooted my server. Ok, the problem is, the bot only did an attempt and logged in, like my password was “123” or LIKE someone knows my password. ONE!! attempt.
Then, I have 2 theories:
There is an SSH exploit not documented.
Or someone in citynet cracked my password and used my VPS for that bot hAx0r…
I changed my pass and something more, well, no more rooted vps at this moment.
I want to emphatize “atack”..do you understand? Why “atack” and not “attack”, in my process list and the mail from citynet? Looks bad, very bad to me….
Sorry for my English…
I hope this experience will be helpful for someone else.
@Yomero Well well that’s rediculous have you ever heard of a data center hacking a vps to use SSH bot? please before you come here and complain be sure that you know enough about your cronjobs that were sat if i am not wrong every second our passwords are well secured and only our clients access their servers unless they needed some help and it’s not done without a support ticket submitted from the same account that bought the service.
@Evo or Evtimiy do you think it makes any sense inventing a TOS term just to suspended you for no reason we have thousands of clients who are using their servers without getting suspended ah and something else to clarify none of our reps. said and will say we allow hosting web proxies as well as adult contents too so i doubt your theory about inventing a TOS term to suspend you makes any sense because you’ve been a client in our data center for quite long time untill now and nothing happened before things like that can be discussed in our support portal (Live chat,Tickets) not her but if you want to stay with us and give up on using proxy server your more than welcome anytime…
I haven’t problem with CityNet Host!
Because of that, i nominated them for best LEB provider for 2010.
Hey, i didn’t know that proxy is allowed!
@Winglet Thanks for your nomination and proxy isn’t allowed :)
It boggle my mind why would anyone want to set up proxy in egypt? You can’t browse porn.. hehe :D
Can we distribute Wikileaks documents?
LOL! Wanna attract more gov-paid hackers?
Sorry, but this question is for Khalid :).
And which gov? I’m from Serbia…
@winglet not too sure about wikileaks it popped up a huge political arguements here..anyway will feed you back once i get any update but so far it’s not..thanks for the nomination again :)
Thanks Khalid.
Best regards
I got this plan and I regret about my choice.
I’ve been waiting for three days for my domain DNS records. It’s not working yet.
I have two opened tickets for more than 48 hours and when asked them for a solution to my tickets I got as an answer that they cannot tell me a date, because they have many other problems to solve first.
Terrible service, not recommended.
