W2 Servers - $36/Year 512MB OpenVZ VPS

Update Oct 2011 — I know W2Servers should have been declared dead long long time ago. But their website finally stopped working on 23 September 2011. No surprises here. Another failed provider.

W2 Servers As noted by eLohkCalb, DynamoVPS (which we featured 2 weeks ago) has now renamed to W2 Servers. On this WHT offer they are selling their standard package for $36/Year, and this standard package is nowhere near low end either.

  • 512MB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • Unmetered bandwidth on 10Mbps
  • OpenVZ/”Matrix Server Control Panel”

Direct order link. They have also moved from Chicago to Scranton — which would be HostNoc in this case. “Full Management” support is claimed on their website, which includes software installation, security hardening etc. Newly registered domain (as it’s a new brand) and both NS are on the same server. It’s certainly in my “too cheap” basket especially the unmetered bandwidth part. Hopefully W2 Interactive can provide good support there.

As with all such offers there should absolutely be an option to opt for e.g. 1TB/month on 100 MBit instead.

  4. I’m their customer too.
Because of “management” offer – I have to wait more than 24 hours to have my VPS set up.
Connectivity isn’t too bad for it’s price. It’s more than OK for really “low-end” users as I am.

If I’m right they are hosting on AMD 64 3500 that means a framework like simfony with 10 peopele online should kill there server. And Steliyan, it’s 10mbps so means you get a maximum of 1MB on a lucky day.

I have one of their $20 Xen VPS with 3G ram and 200G HDD, also in Scranton.
My node is Q6600, I guess with 8GB ram

Just to let people know they don’t just have low end AMD servers.

  5. @Tom: Why you just don’t ping and then think? They are at leeware.com $150/month servers. And as I write before – their speed is not so bad. For cahcefly test file. But I suspect that cachefly.com is in some kind of peering with most lowendbox VPS because all of my USA based the speed is enormous :)

2011-01-12 13:32:07 (739 KB/s) – `esen.tgz’ saved [50966427/50966427] this is hosted with one of my shared hosting providers in the USA too.
With Europe and with my own dedicated server which is on 10mbps the speed is lower than 300KB/s.

Cachefly is a CDN. They have servers all over the place and route you to the one with best speed to you. That’s why it’s usually a good test of inbound speed.

Is it really a good test if the cachefly server is in the same datacenter but everything outside the datacenter slows to a crawl?

on the plus side I was told legal torrents are allowed, so it saves me the 2 months I was going to spend uploading files (I can just grab the torrent which has most of the files I need then upload the changes)

Not sure if I would go with them. I know they also had another name that they recently changed, something about linux. I emailed them yesterday about their dedicated offer, and they said it’s by invitation only, even though it was still advertised on their site. If they can’t update their own website I’m not so sure about them.

  7. Sheeze, I suggest that they fix their website, not redo the whole thing. :)

Anyone else notice that they haven;t answered any of their sales questions in the WHT thread? Not looking too good.

Yeah, doesn’t sounds professional at all… And given the specs and prices of LeeWare offers, their VPS ressources are clearly oversold.

  12. I just started viewing this site, and signed up with W2 Servers, and I got the VPS deal, and I have to say this is the absolute best VPS I have ever had. The technical support responds quick, and did actually resolve my issue quickly! At this point I would highly recommend to anyone, but I will keep in touch and comment how things go! It’s remain to be seen how much my account will be after the inital year, and how service will be but I’ll let you know!

    Thanks for providing this website!

    • I’m not sure how fast they are for you but mine VPS have been setup after about 24 hours and few tickets… Now VPS working fine and there is no downtime. Today they offer to me a new node for my VPS and there is no fees for.

I typically was getting 900kb/s, or more the previous days… I just tried now though http://download.thinkbroadband.com/1GB.zip and it’s going pretty slow, but this could be because of the upload speeds.. I’m not really sure the location of the server it’s coming from either. I figured it would be a good place to try to download test.. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/download.html but who knows…

        • After W2Servers has moved me to a new node and may be at new machine situation looks as follows:
          21:30:42 (10.8 MB/s) – `100mb.test’ saved [104857600/104857600]
          And:
          model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz
          stepping : 10
          cpu MHz : 1333.221
          cache size : 3072 KB

So, I’m more than satisfied :)

Varna, Bulgaria, Europe, 6Mbps Download speed:
    2011-01-20 20:51:11 (287 KB/s) – `100mb.test’ saved [104857600/104857600]
Dallas, United States, ClubUptime VPS, 1GB:
    2011-01-20 20:54:11 (10.5 MB/s) – `100mb.test’ saved [104857600/104857600]

So If I have to be honest – for $36/year this is incredible offer.

While not VPSs, this might still be useful:

I’ve got a dedicated server with them. There’s a big difference in network performance between their LeeWare and BustNET hosting, with BurstNET (Scranton) being much better (I was at LeeWare which was just OK but upgraded and am now very happy). They’re just sorting out hosting in Dallas with gigabit connections which looks great, so I’m getting a couple dedicated servers there. :-)

Their tech support team has seemed good to me for the price (with fully managed at this price you’d expect some delays), and the sales guy I’ve worked with (Kevin J) has been fantastic.

So far I’m very happy with them – we’ll see how things go over the next couple months.

      • But yet they’ll get user and user signing up with them. Just makes it hard for those actually trying to run a legit business as we’re the ones who get to clean up their messes and help those who get their data mucked up.

I haven’t been following comments here, but about what you mentioned, I had a search once through WHT threads. And then I concluded its owner simply knows that he is a burned card, and that he scammed enough with previous companies. So, he just keeps giving refunds to people as easy as no one ever, and that is an attempt to give comfort impression to those who enters the trap of yearly payment (which they will probably will never get), he is doing his best at this specific area that I described, and the goal is simply to keep the scam work going with all the factors that plays against him! But funny enough, seems like the amount of refunds slowly turned them to be a “refunds company” more than VPS hosting one :D
