LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

ProvisionHost - $6.45 256MB OpenVZ VPS in Dallas

ProvisionHost Brandon from ProvisionHost emailed me their VPS plan for the LowEndBox readers. It’s actually available on their VPS plan page, although the “Order” link is borked. Never mind, here is the correct link to order “PHVPS.5” which is $6.45/month. You get

  • 256MB memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 250GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers in Dallas with Databank. Brandon actually provided me a test VPS with IP 64.31.36.158 for you to do traceroute test. Again I don’t have time to do any comprehensive testing. So here’s some quick points:

  • No burstable memory. Errr.
  • 4x Xeon E5620 threads/cores at full speed. Pretty good.
  • ~150 MB/s on a dd conv=fdatasync test. Sweet.
  • I can download at full 100Mbps from Cachefly.

Company has been established in Canada since July 2010. It has got a Facebook page, a Twitter profile, got some nice reviews on both, although it is more focused on gaming servers rather than more general VPS. From its About page, it stated that “its founder, Brandon Chow, has brought the company from a one man to a multi-man operation” — I wonder how many people are working there. Still, nice Minecraft themed website, pretty decent performance (although I might be on an empty box), although you might be able to find a reliable 256MB node at cheaper price elsewhere.

Final note from me today. I am actually going on a road trip with my family for the next 2 weeks, starting tomorrow. I’ll be driving >700km tomorrow so I better get off the computer now. There are still heaps of emails from providers who wish to get listed — they might still have a chance if I can manage to get some reliable HSPA connection :) But don’t be alarmed if LowEndAdmin appears to have disappeared for a while.

Meanwhile there are some things to think about, especially regarding to our community here. The “v2” has been running for 8 months now I think, but is OSQA really the best for LowEndTalk? Or are people happier with an ordinary forum setup? Please keep the LET discussion going on there, and use this blog post to talk about ProvisionHost.

  1. Thanks for taking the time to list our offer and it’s Brandon from Provision Host. To clarify a few things all of our VPSs are discounted due to having recently released them. Also the tests were conducted on a VPSNode that was 3/4 full too and are constantly monitoring them for optimal performance. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment or submit a ticket to us.

  2. Have you looked at Vanilla? It’s a similar layout to OSQA but the interface is much, much nicer.

      • Minecraft runs fine in OpenVZ, faster then Xen because of no overhead, however if your OvZ provider oversells like the server is on crack, then its worse.

I personally hate OSQA, but if you want to keep something similar I second Vanilla, or even bbPress from the makers of WordPress.

    • Not currently although we do plan on adding them soon for nearly the same cost. However we are a different from some providers and do not oversell/overload our nodes, even though it is common with OpenVZ.

  12. Initially, the actual dedicated server is cheaper compared to sever co-location,
however in the long run they be expensive. For example, you do not own the
equipment, so you are not responsible for maintenance.
Often when people think of collocation they imagine
hundreds of servers piled on top of each other in a large room
somewhere; and because of that they don’t think it’s a secure type of hosting.
